Winter 2015 programme Box Office 020 8463 0100 www.blackheathhalls.com Hire the Halls Blackheath Halls, a Grade II listed building, offers two beautiful and unique spaces for celebrations, performances, recordings, conferences and rehearsals. Renowned for the quality of its acoustics, the magnificent Great Hall is the venue of choice for leading orchestras and ensembles for recordings and rehearsals. Among those who choose Blackheath Halls as their preferred venue are Chandos Records, English National Opera, London Symphony Orchestra and Channel 4. The recently refurbished Recital Room, which is licensed for wedding ceremonies, offers the perfect location for smaller scale functions and chamber music performances. For all hire enquiries please contact Caroline Foulkes, hires@blackheathhalls.com or 020 8318 9758 BLACKHEATH WELCOME SUNDAYS PLENTY TO KEEP YOU ENTERTAINED IN 2015 A Happy New Year to everyone. Blackheath Halls has a great tradition for bringing you some of the best names on the comedy circuit. Following in that tradition, we are delighted to announce the launch of Laughing Boy Comedy Club, a monthly Thursday night show in the Recital Room. Alongside new and emerging comedy talents, the Comedy Club will feature some of the top comedians trying out new material. Also on 10 April making their first appearance at the Halls will be two of comedy’s rising young stand up stars – Romesh Ranganathan and Suzi Ruffell – with their hotly anticipated new shows. For lovers of folk music we welcome back both the award-winning Scottish singer, Emily Smith, and the great Irish band, Altan, and an all-day Folk Funday on Sunday 17 May, with workshops, story-telling, concerts and a family ceilidh. On 30 May The Manfreds, with their original frontman, Paul Jones, will be performing many of the greatest hits of the 1960s group Manfred Mann, along with jazz and blues songs from some of their best known albums. Our Saturday Children’s Theatre series brings to the stage more wonderfully enchanting stories, both old and new, including Little Bo Peep, Rumpelstiltskin, and A Real Mermaid’s Tale. Join us for one of our Sunday morning recitals featuring an excellent mix of artists and musical repertoire, including the ever-popular Wihan Quartet, marking their 30th anniversary. We are delighted to welcome the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge to the Halls on 14 March in a special Passiontide concert, including the wonderfully evocative Seven Last Words on the Cross by James MacMillan. This is a rare opportunity to see and hear one of the leading choral groups in the world. The Jette Parker Young Artists will present three further Wednesday evening recitals at the Halls, the first on 21 January. The students of Trinity Laban will once again be providing a diverse range of performances and events from classical to jazz and musical theatre. As ever, Blackheath Halls’ community engagement programme provides lots of opportunities to get involved, have fun, and learn new skills. Between January and March you can come and join our popular Blackheath Does Broadway course, or Meantime Jazz if jazz is your thing. Blackheath Halls Orchestra has space for string and French horn players and this term has the privilege of playing alongside internationally renowned soloists Raphael and Elizabeth Wallfisch. Following the success of our previous children’s operas, the Halls will be presenting a production of Brundibar by the Czech composer Hans Krasa. Two dates to put in your diary now are the annual Quiz Evening on 30 January and the Opera Gala Night on 8 March, both now firmly part of Blackheath’s social calendar, raising very important funds to support the work of the Halls. There’s plenty for everyone so do come and join us. Wrested by rebellious barons from a very reluctant King John, Magna Carta sets out a series of rights and duties, which have been appealed to, ignored, suppressed and argued about ever since. 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of its creation – an event that will be marked with exhibitions, commemorations and debates in all the countries over whose constitutions and legal assumptions the shadow of Magna Carta hangs. 020 8463 0100 TICKETS: £10 THE RICHARD GRIERSON ANNUAL ARCHITECTURE LECTURE Maybe it’s because: Designing London 2020 WEDNESDAY 11 FEBRUARY 8pm | Recital Room In the current decade a population the size of Birmingham’s (latest estimate 1,085,400) will be added to London. London’s economy is set to grow by 15% in the next five years, a rate far higher than the rest of the UK. Under this pressure how shall we hang on to and improve what is best and beautiful about the capital? And be able to do all this while cutting emissions? London has again become the World City – this time commercial rather than imperial. But London’s status today appears to be being gained at the expense of many Londoners, younger ones for a start, for whom it is increasingly less affordable to live here. What can we do through planning, architecture and technology to make a London to love? 26 Sunand Prasad, senior partner of Penoyre & Prasad, a multi sectoral practice with an internationally recognised www.blackheathhalls.com profile in health, education and civic buildings, will discuss this topic in our annual lecture: Designing London 2020. President of RIBA from 2007-2009 and voted one of The Independent’s Top 100 Environmentalists for his work in ‘greening the RIBA’. Sunand Prasad is a leading figure in architecture and construction and continues to hold a number of key positions related to policy development and design quality, including a member of the Mayor’s Design Advisory Panel for London and a member of the UK Government’s Green Construction Board. The lecture is organised by the Friends of Blackheath Halls’ Architectural Group. Greeted each year with great anticipation and fanfare the Booker Prize is a mark of distinction for authors to be selected for inclusion in the shortlist or even to be nominated for the longlist. To many it is considered to be the second-equal most important prize after the Nobel Prize for Literature and alongside the Pulitzer. TICKETS: £10 Become a Friend of Blackheath Halls WEDNESDAY 27 MAY 8pm | Recital Room Throughout the Century Trilogy, Ken Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families as they make their way through the 20th century. Now in Edge of Eternity they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all, the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Presidential impeachment, revolution – and rock and roll. With the hand of a master, Follett brings us into a world we thought we knew but now will never seem the same again. The Friends of Blackheath Halls is a great village network. We exist to support the Halls, raising funds, providing audiences and putting on our own cultural events. The Friends programme includes regular lunchtime concerts, exciting architectural visits, and literary evenings with well-known authors and occasional special events. Having served as a government building after the Second World War, Blackheath Halls faced an uncertain future until it was saved as a concert hall by the local community. Since we reopened in 1985, Blackheath Halls has been at the centre of cultural life in Blackheath and we continue to offer people from all over South East London and beyond an exciting professional performance programme featuring a wide variety of artists. We are proud of our Community Engagement Programme which works closely together with the Music Hubs in the London Boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich. Help us to maintain and improve Blackheath Halls During the last three years the generosity of our supporters has enabled us to install a lift to the first floor, refurbish the Recital Room, improve the outside of our building and repair our car park.
