The matter of the subm~ssionof properly completed Handicap Return F o m s to the Association arouses interest and discussion for all club officials. Of late, it has been frequently observed that club handicappers or club secretaries have been making altogether "too muchJ' of a not very difficult job. As an instance, on very many occasions, club officials have submitted lengthy completed returns which, if proper attention had been given to the instructions issued by the Association when the Handicap Return Fornl system was introduced, could have reduced the wo& by half a t least. Many clubs include details of Deauville Doubles, double-rise, walk-up, tower and mixed bird events. The inclusion of this type of detail for handicapping is quite unnecessary because handicaps are only assessed on double and single-barrel events, shot "downthe line". A11 other events are dassified as novelty competitions except when big awards are made and are usually included in programmes to bring about variety, notwithstanding that the Association authorises open chainpionsl~ipson the five other types of competition shooting mentioned. The five types mentioned have no bearing on the handicapping assess~ n e n t s and therefore should not be included in the return form. Another point which would doubtless save much time and effort to officials compiling the handicap return form i s a suggestion that s t the head or top left of each return a summary of the events covered by the return should be made. Such as No. 1, 5 birds D.B.; No. 2, 20 birds S.B.; No. 3, 10 birds (5 S.B., 5 D.B.). Then a s the completion of the handicap return proceeds all that is necessary i s to 'efer to the fact that shooter's performance which i s being described competed in No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3 or in all events. By this means of preparation the compiler of the return can save much time and also much energy and concentration. It is certainly worth a trial. Any proposal which can ease the burden of club officials should receive consideration and trial. SHOOTING IN FRONT OF HAWDPCAP. A practice noticed in recent months, particularly among some of the bigger clubs, has been to shoot handicap events "two yards in front of handicap". This procedure is entirely contl-ary to Association regulations and clubs acting in this way should cease the practice immediately. It i s a definite Association direction that "ail shooters must shoot from their correct handicap marks". Clubs advertising handicaps "two yards in front of handicap" are completely out of order and acting in an irregular way. It has been stated that the practice has been adopted by some clubs to benefit the backmarkers; be that as it may, it is still not in order. Clubs continuing to disregard the Association direction in this matter leave themselves open for Executive Committee action. A11 shooters must shoot off their correct handicaps a t all times. October, 1959 AUSTRALIAN CLAY TABGET SHOOTING NEWS CARTRIDGES . I N THE GUN. Several well-meaning trapshots have complained to the Association of the practice adopted by many shooters of leaving shells in their guns whilst walking behind the rest of the squad from No. 5 track to No. I track. Some shooters have been noticed actually re-loading after shot on No. 5 and then walking across to No. 1 traclr with the two live shells in the gun. It should be mentioned that no one has yet been noticed walking behind the squad in this fashion with the gun closed. The possibility of a shooter falling while walking from No. 5 to No. I. i s considered to be remote, but nevertheless the possibility i s there and there is also no knowing whether a shell would explode in such circumstances. Here again the possibilities are remote. However, no risk should be talcen, and referees should insist that shooters unload their guns after shooting on No. 5 and then proceed to walk across to No. I with the unloaded gun open. Some referees have already taken action on these lines. Officials acting in this way can be assured of complete Association backing. Association Rule 5, Section 2, clearly lays down the requirements of a competitor in this connection. The Section reads, "A competitor shall load his gun ONLY AT THE FIRING POINT PACING THE TRAPS. We shall place the cartridge or cartridges in his gun, and must remove them or the empty cases before tui-ning from the firing point. The referee or management may disqualify a competitor for violation of this Eule." It is certainly a more comforting thought to other competitors if it i s known to all that the No. 5 man has unloaded his gun when he i s walking behind the rest of the squad. C E REFEREE. The Referee's decislon is final. Thls Association Rule does not appear to be quite understood by many competitors. The Association rules clearly state that "The Referee's Decision is FinalJ', which means, of course, exactly what i s stated. Section 3 of Rule 2 reads, "The Referee's decision in all cases coming under his jurisdiction a s set forth in the rules, shall be final." Section 4 of the same Rule goes on, October. 1959 "If the Referee i s negligent or inefficient, impairing thereby the equity of the competition, the management may forthwith remove him. This rule applies also to scorers, pullers, trappers, and any other of the staff." Section 7 of the same rule states, "The Referee has power to alter his decision." From all the foregoing i t should, however, not be taken that all. and sundry may appeal or protest against a referee's "decisionJ'. The Rules make no allowance for any protest against the decision of a Referee, hence the intimation that "the Referee's decision i s final". It has been a popular belief in some quarters that a protest can be lodged against a decision of a Referee. I t is pointed out that the Rules give no such authority. The only occasion when a competitor ]nay protest, and not against a Referee, is under Rule 8 (section I), which states, "A competitor may challenge the load of any other competitor, under Rule 12 (b) (which reads, 'A load of shot greater than one and one-quarter ounce weight, struck measure, nor may a larger size of shot than No. 6 (English) be usedJ). On receipt of a written challenge, with .hl forfeit, the management shall obtain a cartridge from the challengee, and if, after public examination of it, the management finds the challengee has violated Rule 12 (b), he may be disqualified or not accordingly, as the offence was wilfully cominitted or other~vise. In case the challengee is ~vhollyinnocent, the forfeit sl~allbe paid to him, otherwise i t shall be returned to the challenger. The lnanagement of any club, or of any tournament, has the power to examine any competitor's cartridges a t their discretion, without involving themselves in any penalty." Hence i t will be observed that there was no appeal against the decision of a Referee a t any time. Clubs submitting reports on shoots are requested to retain these accounts in the actual form of a "report" and not in the form of a letter, as several clubs have made a practice of doing. By writing a shoot report as a 'letterJJ it means that all the introduction and finalisation sections have to be struck out for printing pur- AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET SHOOTING NEWS (Affiliated A.C.T.A.) Dear Mr. McCullough, The article on Registration Cards on page 9 of the July issue of the "News" has caused considerable discussion in these parts, and i t is felt that the decision to discontinue the Handicap portion of Registration Cards is a mistake. Under the new ruling, when a competitor goes back a yard for one major win or three divisions a t the one meeting, i t is possible for a shooter to have earned the penalty of being put hack two or three yards and for him then to go to another club, who would be unaware of this. and .shoot a t a shorter handicap than he deserves. How can we explain the astonishing habit of our little Tailorbird which actually sews leaves into the top and sides of its nest? SHOOTING NEWS Four kinds of introduced birds and a t least eight Australian species practice "anting", picking up ants and wiping under the wings and through the feathers with them. Here again is a strange habit recorded in a number of other countries, and having examined the facts and five relevant theories, the author suggests an age-old secret of nature is being revealed- that birds "use not only sunlight, water, dust, and smoke. but also insect acids and the hidden virtues of plants, for the benefit of their bodies." Australia has three mound-building hirds which resort to artificial incubation and use decaying vegetation for hatching eggs. If the leaves are large, only three or four may be bent over and used, but one nest in a blackberry bush had 25 stitched in with spider webbing or fibre. How they developed this astonishing technique as a substitute for natural brooding, adjusting their activities to suitable weather conditions, aerating the mounds and regulating the internal temperature, is one of the most interesting mysteries of "bird mind" with its infinite varietv of behaviour-~atterns. A few of a large number observed by the author on the fringe of D~~ w h y L~~~~~ had heen sewn with or rayon taken from wool, stockings or galments on nearby clothes lines. "Bird Wonders of Australia" ranges f a r beyond the believe-it-ornot minority and brings within its compass a mass of bird lore and strange happenings related to numerous soeeles. Facts belie the common assumption that an association between birds and insects is based only on food. Mr. Chisholm cites cases in which insects obviously act as sanitation agents in nests in return for food and shelter, and records the "storage" habit of the Inland Crested Bellbird which collects live caterpillars for food and keeps them captive in the nest by paralysing them with a firm pressure of its beak. Very curious, too, is the association of some of our Warblers with native wasps, the nests of the birds being nearly always close to those of the wasps. Certain hirds in South America, the West Indies and Africa have the same habit, the general conclusion of observers being that the birds obtain "some degree of protection" from their well-armed wasp associates. October. 1959 With a lifetime of ohservation and research on Australian birds, Mr. Chisholm is singularly well qualified to deal with this subiect. and his livelv and fresh 1iterai.v stvle sustaini and enhances (he -reader's interest in an exciting theme. Country people, who enjoy an openair life and have most opportunities for observing birds, will specially value this handsomely produced book, and find a wealth of continninrr pleasure in its pages.-N.L.R. * * Girls today are not what they were in 1940. I 10 I am now the proud owner of a n American "Victor" crow decoy set, which arrived a s a gift froom Wichita, Kansas. This comnrises a nnoier mochc owl and crow a s ;-+ell as i &ow call. Already reaction has taken place. I deccded to risk the comment, "What? more rubbish," and duly displayed the new toy in the drawing room. Whereupon my wife took instant dislike to the baleful d a r e of t h e owl and added that as fay as the crow was concerned, she never did like anything black anyway. The next critic was the cat, who with all the skill of its kind commenced to stalk the strange objects. The owl is about one foot six inches in height. with l a r r e rlass eves. whiih Fib; found t o o fierce to Ace: So very carefully she proceeded to approach from the rear. Her curiosity lasted for three stalks, a s each time I would move the awl until its eyes rested on the stalker. This proved too much f o r the cat, which retreated slowly with flattened ears. With such a n encouraging response in mind, and high 'hopes that crows would be equally affected, I proceeded to give it a field trial. Field Trials 20 Bird Double Barrel f 5 0 Handicap October, 1959 NEWS Decoying Crows ' SATURDAY, 31st OCTOBER, 1959 SHOOTING The place chosen for this was a newly-sown field of wheat. On approaih a fair number of pigeon departed, but no crows were seen. However, the sides of the field are bordered by an "L" shaped, thin woodland. With the decavs set out some thirty yards from the corner of the "L",and the owl facinrr the cro\r-, a s if they were sizing each other up; I took cover in a small holly bush and awaited results. Awaited is hardly the word, as I was no sooner settled when the first crow started to circle the decovs. As i t circled. it last height, a i d finally, as its circle neared my position, I fired, and felt great joy in seeing the crow crumple and drop within a few feet of the decoys. Crow No . 2 followed in exactly the same way, but No. 3, being hit too f a r behind., managed to fly about 150 yards, utterlng long, exc~ted calls before dropping. Incidentally, I tried to memorise those calls for future use with the crow call. Feeling that the last development might upset further decoying to the owl. 1 went t o retrieve this crow, &h<ckproved to be quite dead when I reached it. Glancing back to the set, I witnessed three more crows circling the decoys, but, of course, I was unable to do anything owing to the distance. The fallowing day found the ,owl in action again, this time a t Jim's farm. The owl Xmas perched up on a hedge while Jim, two other shooters and I were in a straw-baled hide. Not only \vas the hide rather cramped, but the site chosen was where last yeax's manure heap had stood. Still, the crows performed, and shooting was had by all. On adjourning we realised that we were not exactly cove~ed in violets, and Jim agreed that a better site could have been chosen. There is no doubt that this is the way to deal with crows. "A good bloke has passed". That statement covers in brief the passing of oouular Harold Sweenev. who was wefi &own on all Melbourhe shooting tracks, as well as many grounds long distances from Melbourne. Harold had a run of misfortune in recent years, culminating with the contracting of an apparently incurable ailment a few months back which took him off fairly quickly. As recently as May last, Harold Sweeney was enjoying the hospitality of the Cunnamulla Club and reports have i t that he really enjoyed himself in every sense of the word. Harold Sweeney was a most likeable character, popnlar in all sections of the shooting world, and his like is all too infrequent in the battle of life. He did many good and kindly deeds about which only a few of his closest friends knew. I t was his pleasure to do good by quiet action, but his motives were always of the h~ghest class. The deepest sympathy is expressed to his relatives. A very large gathering of the Melbourne shooting fraternity gathered a t Sweeney's funeral. Gordon S H O O T I N G N EWS Tilly, who used the unusual non-deplume of "Woofer", registered a break of 61 straight a t a Camberwell Club fixture. Tilly was one of the best of the younger pre-war crop of shooters. He later joined the A.I.F. and served in most theatres of war. He has not shot since his return to civilian life. The late Charlie Mitchell, brother of the late Dame Nellie Melba, at the same fixture as Tilly, ~ recorded ~ a sequellce ~ of 30~ straight. Ten Years Ago A t this period ten years ago "News" was running a series of comments forwarded by the late and very famous W. P. Grasvenor, a onetime coach of the English Interna~ ~ an ~ . headed tional T "we do meet 'em," G~~~~~~~~wrote, to have, ~ ~ shootinP l l men are at-some time or another, run across strange experiences. It is the custom here (in England), when strangers wander in, to ask them if they would care to t r y a few shots, in the hope that we may get hold of some fresh blood t o swell our membership. It does not always come off, and I remember a n incident or two that were rathe? amusing. When the old North London Gun Club held its opening meeting in 1910, the lay-out consisted of a small trench, with three Eley traps. The earthen bank protecting the trapper was not very high, hut sufficiently so t o protect him and hide the barrels of clay pigeons, which, in those days, contained 500. Well, the inevitable onlookers turned up in force and during the lull between events the club captain asked if any of the visitors would like to t r y their hands and fire a shot or two. One man accepted, and so a s to make it a s easy as possible, h e was placed right up hehind the trench and told to call 'Pull' and then fire. This he did. However, in his excitement he the trigger immediately he called 'Pull', and the gun, not yet raised, went off and put the charge into an unopened barrel of 500 clay pigeons and smashed the lot, thus making a n unbeatable score -to the horror of club members. It was not so expensive then a s i t would be now, a s clays a t that time were 22/6 a barrel of 500." The issue of the September edition in 1949 marked the completion of two years of publication of "News". Clubs shootinx a t that time and Coburg Club, showed "presidential" form in winning the Footscray Club's premier title (double-barrel) with the ~c%nsville Club. piace-getters were, Keith Cameron (Roma), Ken Bassett (Snrat) and Doug Nasser (Atherton). When a woman meets a man who looks her straight in the eye-she'd better do something about her figure. * * If you are willing to admit you are all wrong when you are all wrong, you are all right!
