They are subject to change INTRODUCING THE PANTANAL Brazil’s Pantanal is to South America what the Serengeti is to East Africa: a wildlife-rich ecosystem that showcases an abundance of animals and breathtaking scenery. As the world’s largest wetland, this wildlife-watcher’s paradise provides an unparalleled experience—and the best viewing opportunities—of South America’s magnificent flora and fauna. Jaguars are more easily seen in the Pantanal than anywhere else on the continent. Other mammals of note include giant anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, five species of primates, elegant maned wolves, marsh deer, giant river otters, peccaries, and coatimundis. Nearly 650 species of birds live in the Pantanal, including hyacinth macaws, cuckoos, Darwin’s rheas, and toucans. Reptiles include caiman and anacondas, and there are numerous amphibians and colorful butterflies. The Pantanal is a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve and also South America’s primary wildlife sanctuary. It is a biogeography mixing pot featuring marshlands, river deltas, lakes, grasslands, and forests. The San Diego Zoo’s Pantanal tour offers a wondrous wilderness adventure with our travelers staying in comfortable and contemporary hotels and eco-lodges. In addition, we will discover some of Brazil’s iconic cites, from Sao Paulo, its economic hub, to the frontier town of Campo Grande. Pre-and-post tour extensions offer the opportunity to explore the worldrenowned Iguassu Falls and Brazil’s most popular city, Rio De Janeiro. By day, she is associate director of communications for the development department of the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, where she has worked for 35 years. In her spare time “George” is the author of more than 20 children’s books, including the Zoo World series published by Simon & Schuster, plus numerous magazine, newspaper, and web articles. George’s most recent work is the coffee table book, “The Katrina Dolphins: One-Way Ticket to Paradise,” which is a true story about 8 dolphins from an oceanarium who were washed out to sea during Hurricane Katrina and dramatically rescued. George’s passions are travel, photography, storytelling, Broadway musicals, and, of course, animals and conservation. Her worldwide adventures have taken her to some of the wildest places on Earth—from the jungles of Borneo and South America to the forests and wetlands of India to the mountains of China as well as the savannas of Africa and Australia’s Outback. She is looking forward to exploring the magnificent Pantanal with our WorldWild travelers and is excited to see such a variety of South American species in their native habitat. (Meals Aloft) DAY 2~SATURDAY~SEPTEMBER 20 SÃO PAULO Arrive at the Guarulhos International Airport this morning where your Classic Escapes representative is waiting to greet you. En route to the hotel enjoy a city tour. São Paulo became an exciting city with the arrival of great waves of immigrants at the end of the 19th century, followed by migrants from other parts of Brazil in the early 20th century. They were attracted by the coffee plantations and later by industry and the service sector. In this way, the city grew and new traditions took root. Today, the capital of the State of São Paulo is an important economic and financial hub, as well as one of the main centers for the development of news trends, culture, and entertainment in Brazil. Learn about the history of São Paulo by visiting the area where the city was founded, and enjoy the Ipiranga Museum with its fine paintings and beautiful gardens. It also has important monuments and museums, such as the Latin American Memorial, the Portuguese Language Museum, Muse de Arte de Sao Paulo (located on Avenida Paulista), and high profile events that include the International Art Biennial, the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix and the São Paulo Fashion Week. Continue toward the Barrio de la Libertad, bastion of Japanese immigrants. When the tour passes by the Historic Center of San Pablo, you will visit the Sé Cathedral, Pateo do Collegio (School Yard), Monastery of San Benito, Anhangabaú Valley, Municipal Theatre, and the Plaza de La República. You will also visit the famous Mercado Municipal of São Paulo, a haven of gastronomy. There are thousands of food items for sale, everything from fresh tropical fruit to seafood, sweets, and even exotic spices from all around the world. Walk around and savor the wonderful aromas and flavors from the various stands. L'Hotel Porto Bay is one of São Paulo's most elegant boutique hotels, offering luxurious accommodations and top-notch service. Rooms are lavishly furnished with antique furniture, top-quality linen, goose down pillows, and bathrooms that feature bathtubs and l'Occitane amenities. Overnight at the L’HOTEL PORTO BAY. They are subject to change DAYS 3/4 ~SUNDAY/MONDAY~SEPTEMBER 21/22 NORTHERN PANTANAL: PORTO JOFRE Today you fly to Cuiabá, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, a city founded during the gold rush of the early 18th century. Upon arrival you will begin your drive on the Transpantaneira to your hotel in Porto Jofre with several stops en route to watch wildlife and enjoy the scenery. The Pantanal is the largest contiguous wetland on the planet. Declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, it is South America's primary wildlife sanctuary. With a total area of approximately 54,000 square miles and located in the center of the continent, the Pantanal is a biogeography mixing bowl containing elements of the Amazon rain forest, the Caatinga, the Brazilian savannah, the Atlantic rain forest, and the Paraguayan Chaco. This area is an unparalleled wildlife reserve of spectacular beauty, an ecological paradise containing hundreds of species of birds, thousands of varieties of butterflies, myriad brightly colored flowers, and shoals of fish. Capuchin and howler monkeys, capybaras, toucans, anacondas, caimans, and tapirs create an aquatic and sylvan theater of sights and sounds. The endangered jaguar, and increasingly rare hyacinth macaws and giant river otters, all make their home in the Pantanal. Your days here will be spent exploring this magical place. Typical activities include boat rides (both at sunrise and sunset), walks at first light, night trips, piranha fishing, and jaguar spotting. The jaguar is the third largest, and certainly one of the most elusive, of the world's big cats. Few people, even veteran researchers, have had the privilege to encounter this top predator in the wild. Porto Jofre happens to be one of the best places in the world to see wild jaguars, and although we cannot guarantee a sighting, it is highly likely in this part of the northern Pantanal. Hotel Porto Jofre is a comfortable hotel located at the end of the Transpantaneira, in a town also called Porto Jofre. This is the starting point for a number of boat tours offered on Rio Cuiabá, Rio Tres Irmãos, Rio São Lourenco, and Rio Piquiri. The hotel is equipped with 28 bungalow apartments with a porch and a hammock each. All rooms have air conditioning, TV, minibar, and a bathroom. There is also an air-conditioned restaurant offering regional cuisine, a game room, TV room, souvenir shop, broadband Internet, and laundry facilities. Overnights at HOTEL PORTO JOFRE. Your drive isn’t so much a transfer, it is more like a trip outing. You are surrounded by the beauty of the Pantanal. Amazing flora creates the perfect setting while the curious fauna will keep your eyes very busy. Keep your camera handy as surprises may pop up anywhere along the way. Over the next two days you will have the opportunity to embark on quite a few different activities. Jeep trips will be the main form of sightseeing, taking you deep into the wetlands where wildlife sightings are optimal. Night drives give you the added bonus of experiencing the nocturnal Pantanal. Horseback riding through the pastures, woods and wetlands is another excellent way to get back to nature. Or, take a canoe ride along the river and become one with this untamed natural gem as you paddle along. Other activities include piranha fishing, bird-watching, and hiking. There are several paths giving you close contact with varied plant and wildlife. If you did not have an opportunity to see the absolutely stunning hyacinth macaws in Porto Jofre, you will be very happy to know that you are almost guaranteed a sighting here. As a guest at the Araras Eco Lodge, you are actively participating in their environmental preservation programs. Back in 1993, there were 27 hyacinth macaws living near the Araras Eco Lodge and its neighboring areas. Today, with the support of the lodge, their numbers have increased significantly. Built in harmony with the environment, without renouncing comfort, the Araras Eco Lodge is reachable all year. Constructed in regional rustic style, it offers 19 comfortable rooms with air conditioning, screened windows, ceiling fans, private bathrooms (cold and hot shower), a swimming pool with an adjoining covered area for meals, large verandahs with hammocks, reading room and conference hall, gift shop, bar, and restaurant. The excellent regional food consists of dishes made from the tasty meat and fishes of the Pantanal, as well as organic salads, vegetables, and seasonal fruits. Overnights at ARARAS ECO LODGE. The city’s nickname is Cidade Morena because of the reddishbrown soil in the region. Upon arrival, you are transferred to your hotel where the remainder of the day is spent at leisure. This evening you will enjoy dinner and a lecture from Patricia Medici, a conservation biologist who launched a countrywide Lowland Tapir Conservation Initiative to establish tapir research and conservation programs. Duties permitting, Patricia might even join you at Fezanda Baía das Pedra, as most of her work and research is concentrated there. Patricia’s work includes the promotion of lowland tapirs as conservation ambassadors and, as well as getting local communities interested in habitat conservation that benefits many other species of local wildlife. The Novotel Campo Grande offers 88 spacious and contemporary guestrooms, with all the modern amenities. The combination of color and style will give you a unique experience in comfort. Dine at Restaurante 365, where you are sure to find quick and personal service with a choice of an à la carte menu or buffet dining on the weekdays. The drive will give you a wonderful view of the Pantanal. One can often spot tapirs, capybaras, flocks of birds, and other animals while driving through this land. Over the next three days you will be in the southern Pantanal. Made up of diverse landscapes, such as marsh wetlands and lush rain forest, these ever-changing habitats are home to an abundant concentration of wildlife. Fazenda Baía Grande is a working ranch with approximately 37,000 acres, a large number of cattle, and the most incredible variety of birds and animals. This charming lodge is positioned on the edge of the Vazante do Castelo, an incredible natural open field area abounding with extraordinary wildlife. The Fazenda was founded in 1940 by José Coelho Lima and his wife, Cyra Gomes Coelho Lima. The couple inherited a small piece of land where they lived and worked with cattle. As the years passed by they bought more land and formed Baía das Pedras, on 37,000 acres. The two freshwater lakes with gravel rocks and sand located at the Fazenda, inspired the name Baía das Pedras, or “Bay of Rocks.” Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change Without losing the original style and the warm atmosphere of homestays, Fazenda Baía das Pedras has the capacity to host up to 13 guests in its accommodations, which are divided in three triple rooms (for the San Diego Zoo group the triples would be used as doubles) and three double guestrooms. The owner’s room is also supplied in the event our group is larger. All the accommodations have private bathrooms, air conditioning, and a ceiling fan. The food served is varied and plentiful, with organic meat featured prominently as well as plenty of beans, rice, vegetables, and salads. While here, relax and enjoy the landscape. You will also have the opportunity to get close to the natural life and culture of the place through the activities the farm offers. Optional Activities: • Horseback riding – Pantaneiro horses, raised at the Fazenda, are excellent for tours on the surrounding forests and the Drain of Castelo. This place has the biggest concentration of trees and a lot of animals can find shelter and food. The Pantaneiro horses are completely adaptable to the wetlands. If you are interested, you can follow the cowboys when they are doing their daily work and witness their talent for roping and handling cattle. • Canoeing – The Fazenda has handcrafted canoes made up of “ximbuva” wood (Enterolobium contortisiliqum) by people from Corumba, South Mato Grosso. The piranha fishing tours are on Guanandy Bay, Baía das Pedras Bay and Drain of Castelo. Birds, caimans, and mammals go frequently to the bays, mainly in the early hours of the day, and at sunset. • Trekking – Paths take visitors to special places like the macaw’s landing area. The bee’s way and another path along the Drain of Castelo are perfect for watching sunsets. • Spotlight – A tour done at night, in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, can illuminate caimans and other nocturnal animals. It is a special way to watch and listen to the sounds of the Pantanal. • Photographic Trip – this unites two passions, photography and observation of wildlife and habitat. Classic Escapes, their staff and their agents, cannot be held liable for any visas, etc., not held by travelers, nor for the cost of obtaining visas. PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION: Upon receipt of your registration and deposit, we will send a pre-departure packet to you. This packet contains all the information you need to prepare for your tour, including the complete itinerary, packing checklist, required documents, and insurance information. FINAL DOCUMENTS: Final documents and tickets will be sent to you approximately two weeks prior to departure, provided all monies have been paid in full. TRANSPORTATION OPTIONAL AIR TRANSPORTATION: Round-trip, economy-class flights via DELTA AIR LINES and/or other IATAN carriers are between SAN DIEGO and the destination city noted in the itinerary. Rates are based on special promotional fares; cancellation fees apply once tickets are issued. Departures from other cities in the USA are possible at additional cost; inquire at the time of reservation. Please note that these promotional fares are subject to 10 passengers traveling together on the same airline route and itinerary. If this minimum is not met, the special group rates are not applicable and it might become necessary to issue instant-purchase tickets earlier than when final payment is due in order to take advantage of airfares that are similar to the group rates. Should this occur, you will be contacted with the details. AIRLINE SEATING: For DELTA AIR LINES, we request seats together for the group. All planes are nonsmoking. We can request a seating preference on your behalf, however, requested seats cannot be guaranteed. Requests should be made in writing no later than 60 days prior to departure. Bulkhead and/or emergency row seats can only be requested at airport check-in on the day of departure. Boarding passes will only be issued at the airport on the day of departure. You may inquire about seat changes during check-in, based on availability, and it is at the sole discretion of airport staff. FREQUENT FLYER MILEAGE: As mentioned, we work primarily with Delta Air Lines. For a list of the airline’s partners, visit www.delta.com/.../earn-miles/earn-miles-with-partners/airlines.html. You may obtain frequent flyer mileage on any of these carriers. Present your frequent flyer card for all flight check-ins and keep the boarding passes until you receive a statement with the mileage credit. TRANSFERS: Round-trip airport transfers are included in the tour for those guests arriving on group flights. If travelers make their own air arrangements, they will be subject to extra transfer fees. TRIP DETAILS ACCOMMODATIONS: You will marvel at the wonderful accommodations provided throughout your tour. All rooms have private bathroom facilities and air conditioning and/or fans. All rates are based on double occupancy. Most rooms are twin-bedded, but king-size beds are occasionally available and should be requested in advance. Accommodations listed in this itinerary are correct at time of writing but on rare occasions may be substituted for a different property of comparable quality. MEALS: All meals as specified in the itinerary. Please notify us if you have special dietary needs or requests, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. INOCULATIONS: When it comes to vaccination and disease prevention, we suggest that travelers first review information provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov/travel) and then discuss those details with their personal physicians. WATER: It is always advisable to drink bottled and/or filtered water when traveling overseas. Safe drinking water will be provided to travelers free of charge in the vehicles and during meals. BAGGAGE: On average, international flights from the USA allow two pieces of checked luggage, each not exceeding 50 pounds; however we always recommend that you check your airline’s policy just before departure, as luggage limitations are always subject to change. Despite this weight allowance, we always suggest that guests travel light. Also, soft-sided duffel bags are ideal for this tour, as they stow best in vehicles and airplanes with limited space. Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing.
