Mowital® G M U LT I - TA L E N T E D T H E R M O P L A S T I C S Mowital® G M U LT I - TA L E N T E D T H E R M O P L A S T I C S POLYMERS OF THE MOWITAL® G SERIES ARE AMORPHOUS THERMOPLASTIC POLYMERS WHICH ARE PROVIDED AS GRANULES WITH LOW RESIDUAL WATER CONTENT (<0.5 WEIGHT-%). Mowital G grades have excellent melting behavior and can be used in injection moulding, melt blowing, thermoforming and standard extrusion procedures. Due to the granular shape Mowital G can easily be used in all kinds of feeding systems. Moreover Mowital G granules allow dust-free application, are non-toxic and comply with most of the common regulations for food packaging. Due to their advanced structure consisting of polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl acetate, and polyvinyl alcohol units, Mowital G grades exhibit excellent adhesion to glass, metals, wood, ceramics, etc. They are soluble in many organic solvents and exhibit excellent film-forming properties and may be combined with a wide range of other polymers. Mowital G grades are ideal both as a binding agents as well as dispersants. It predestine them for successful use as dispersing agent for masterbatches or the colouring of polymers. The chemical structure provides a semipolar character of Mowital G enabling the usage as a compatibiliser for colour pigments, inorganic fillers, like metal oxide or metal particles as well as carbon black. Mowital G is colourless, transparent, and lightfast. These properties make them the preferred polymer for colour-neutral formulations with high colour-purity. Mowital G grades can be burned out without residue. Hence they are suitable as a temporary binder for e.g. powder-injection moulding processes. Since Mowital G is compatible with various plastics, such as PMMA, PA, PVC, ABS, or TPU, it is especially valuable for applications in masterbatch formulations. Beside this, Mowital G grades can be used as additives for thermoplastic compounds and thermoplastic elastomers as adhesion promoter, e.g. for bonding of polymeric compounds to glass, metals and ceramic substrates. Free OH-groups of the polymer derived from the polyvinyl alcohol units enable cross-linking reactions with e.g. epoxies, phenolics, isocyanates leading to modified, elasticised thermoset materials or modified binders based on a polyvinyl butyral scaffold. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Characteristic physical properties like solvent viscosities, melt flow indices (MFI), glass transition temperatures (Tg), and softening temperatures of the Mowital G types are mainly determined by increasing degree of polymerization and molecular weight: Glass transition temperatures (Tg) between 63 °C and 84 °C are measured for the individual types. The softening temperature ranges start with the low-viscous types at about 125 °C and ends with the higher viscous grades at approximately 235 °C giving melt flow indices (190 °C, 2.16 kg [g/10 min.]) from 85 for low-viscous grades down to approximately 1 of higher-viscous grades. This correlates to solvent viscosities (10 weight-% in ethanol [mPas]) ranging from 20 to 1000 mPas. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Mowital G grades exhibit E-moduli ranging from 2300 to 2600 N/mm², yield stress values from 40 to 60 N/mm² depending on the degree of polymerisation with elongation values ranging from 0.5 to 4 %. Charpy Impact Test values range from 0.5 to 5 kJ/m² (notched) and 10 – 98 kJ (not notched). Under Vicat B test conditions Mowital G polymers exhibit Vicat softening temperatures from 62 – 66°C and Shore D values of 83 – 85. CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS Polymers of the Mowital G series consists of polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl acetate, and polyvinyl alcohol units. The polyvinyl butyral units and the backbone determine the unpolar character whereas the polyninyl acetate and polyvinylalcohol units determine the polar character of the polymer. Besides this, the free OH-groups enable cross-linking reactions with other reactive chemicals or resins. backbone OH unpolar side-chain polar units OAc cross-linking chemical reactivity MOWITAL G GRADES RANGE 1) 10 w.-% viscosity in ethanol at 20°C 2) 190°C, 2,16 kg load 3) DSC, according to ISO 11357-1 4) Ring and ball method, DIN EN ISO 4625 5) According to DIN EN ISO 527 6) According to DIN EN ISO 179 7) According to DIN EN ISO 306 8) According to DIN 53505 Mowital® G M U LT I - TA L E N T E D T H E R M O P L A S T I C S PROPERTIES ✓ polyvinyl butyral-based polymers ✓ granules ✓ amorphous thermoplastic polymer ✓ colourless and transparent ✓ excellent adhesion to glass, metals, wood, and ceramics (thermoplastic adhesive) ✓ low residue moisture content (below 0.5 %) ✓ burns out without residue ✓ non-toxic and dust-free POTENTIALAPPLICATIONS APPLICATIONS / POTENTIAL OPTIONAL USE ✓ suitable for thermoplastic processing (injection moulding and extrusion processes) ✓ compatible with various plastics, e.g. PMMA, PA, PVC, ABS, TPU, or thermoplastic elastomers ✓ use as compatibiliser and dispersing additive for pigments, inorganic fillers, metal particles ✓ adhesion promoter (glass, metals, wood, ceramics, etc.) ✓ use for formulations with high-colour purity ✓ reactivity of free OH-groups (cross-linking, base for chemically modified PVB-binders) ✓ allows usage for moisture-sensitive applications ✓ temporary binder for powder–injection moulding (PIM) ✓ compliance with food regulations World leader in polymer chemistry Kuraray is the leading supplier of polyvinyl alcohol (Mowiol® and Kuraray POVAL®), its films and fibres (KURALON), polyvinyl butyrals (Mowital® and Pioloform®) and its films (TROSIFOL®) for the global market.
