Glen Arden Resident: ‘For my daughters to
know they don’t have to worry about me, it’s
just a tremendously wonderful feeling.’
Glen Arden provides residents with independent living and peace of mind
After living in her Middletown home for 55 years, Lois
Schwab knew it was time for a change.
It wasn’t an easy decision, as her husband was in the early
stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He wasn’t interested in moving,
Schwab recalled, but she also knew that the move was the right
decision for both of them.”
“My husband was the reason why I came to Glen Arden,”
she said. “I felt my life was being consumed by his illnesses.
I had gotten worn out. We were approached by someone who
asked us multiple times to sell our home. Finally, in March 2013,
I was ready.”
Schwab, 78, already knew about the benefits of living at
Glen Arden, Orange County’s only continuing care retirement
c o m m u n i t y
(CCRC), located
in Goshen. The
community offers
all the services and
amenities a resident
may need under one
roof, whether it’s
independent living
for people like
Schwab, assisted
living or skilled
nursing care.
I n S c h w a b ’s
case, her mother
had spent the last
13 years of her
life at Glen Arden,
eventually settling
in the skilled nursing
care facility. “That
Lois Schwab, Glen Arden resident, was very comforting
to us,” she said. “We
admires a home made quilt that hangs in didn’t have to worry

about me. I’m safe,

and I can do what I
want, when I want and as I please.”
That’s appealing to Schwab, who is now finding her “new
norm” after her husband’s passing last December and her knee
replacement surgery in the beginning of the year.
“We needed a lot of help with different things,” she said.
“It’s hard when a person deteriorates. My new ‘habits’ haven’t
yet been fully developed, but they’re getting there. There are so
many activities going on here; you can do nothing, everything
or something in-between.”
Glen Arden’s services and amenities are plentiful, and
include: restaurant-style dining; biweekly housekeeping; on-site
beauty/barber service; scheduled transportation for those who
no longer use a car; a library, business center and on-site bank;
an arts and crafts studio and wood shop; tennis, bocce ball and
shuffleboard courts; an indoor heated pool; miniature golf; and
walking trails.
“I’m part of a craft group,” she said. “We’re making lap
blankets for the nursing home residents. I like to crochet. I also
use the pool a lot as it helps with my knee therapy. I’m planning
on doing more volunteer activities too, like volunteering at the
residents’ desk.”
Maureen Torelli, Glen Arden’s vice president and executive
director, appreciates the interest and enthusiasm of people
like Schwab who become an integral part of the Glen Arden
community.
“I want to clone Mrs. Schwab,” said Torelli. “Like all of our
residents, she is just so supportive of our efforts to create a happy,
homey and safe living environment. She involves herself with
many activities and makes Glen Arden a better place.”
Schwab still has a car and goes out to do errands, shop or visit
her two daughters. On holidays, she treats the family to dinner
in the dining room. Schwab also enjoys the various networking
opportunities with friends and staff, and the ability to have a cat
in her apartment.
“This way of life is just so much easier,” she added.
Schwab is an advocate of the Glen Arden way of life for
many reasons.
“There’s peace of mind,” she said. “I know I will be cared
for and my kids don’t have to take care of me. I felt that way with
my mother. When we moved in here, one of the last things my
daughter said to me before she left for the day was, ‘Mom, you’re
safe now.’ The staff here is so friendly and warm and caring.”
And she likes
the volunteer
opportunities that
keep her mind
active, telling a
guest about the
many different
things which will
be on sale at Glen
Arden’s Treasure
Sale, taking place
from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. on Saturday,
April 25.
“I don’t feel
78,” she said. “I
like being able
to go out by
myself, and with
the group here,
when I want. I
like being able to
travel with my Pets are welcome in Glen Arden. Lois Schwab in

to relax. But the
emotional and physical security, that’s really important. For
my girls to know they don’t have to worry about me is just a
tremendously wonderful feeling.”
