Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda brought the practice of yoga
from India to the West in aform which was easy to understand and universal
in its approach. The enormous importance of yoga was shown on 21 June
2015 when the first International Day of Yoga took place with hundreds of
thousands of participants worldwide. The UN General Assembly had adopted
a resolution by India and called on all states to observe the day in order to
raise awareness of "the benefits of practising yoga."
"Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and
well-being", said Indian Prime Minister Modi.
In the same spirit, the International Sivananda Yoga centres have been teaching yoga as a lifestyle for the last 60 years in 50 different centres and Ashrams worldwide.
The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Retreat House was founded in 1998 in a wide
valley of the Kitzbühel mountains. It is a place for people from different traditions and walks of life to come together for holistic yoga practice.

The yoga of synthesis
THE YOGA MASTERS
Swami Sivananda (1887 – 1963)
A great sage and yogi of modern India and the inspiration behind the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. Swami Sivananda served many years
as a physician before renouncing worldly life. He lived for more than 30 years
as a renunciant in Rishikesh, located on the banks of the Ganges in the foothills of the Himalayas. There he established the Divine Life Society and trained
an entire generation of recognised yoga masters. He wrote more than 200
books and his teachings continue to inspire people around the world.
Swami Vishnudevananda (1927 – 1993)
A world-renowned authority on yoga. He was sent by his teacher Swami
Sivananda to the West, where he founded the international Sivananda Yoga
Vedanta Centres in 1957. As an untiring activist for world peace, he made
symbolic peace flights to the world's troubled spots (Northern Ireland, Middle
East, the divided Berlin, etc.). He was a highly regarded master of Hatha and
Raja Yoga, and author of the classic textbooks The Complete Illustrated Book
of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras.
Yoga recommends the following four practices to
equally develop body, mind and spirit:
Swami Vishnudevananda taught a synthesis of
the classical four paths of yoga in five simple
principles:
KARMA YOGA
Physical exercises (Asanas) enhance the flexibility
of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments and
stimulate circulation. Flexibility and strength of the
spine keep the body youthful.
Acting selflessly, without thought of personal gain or
reward, purifies the heart and sublimates the ego.
BHAKTI YOGA
The yoga of devotion appeals to the emotional nature. Through prayer, worship and ritual, the awareness is focussed on the Divine as an embodiment
of love.
Breathing exercises (Pranayama) connect the body
to its battery – the solar plexus – which is an enormous storehouse of energy. Stress and depression
can be overcome by breathing more deeply and
with increased awareness.
RAJA YOGA/HATHA YOGA
International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres ( ) and Ashrams ( ) worldwide
Asanas (yoga postures) and Pranayama (breathing
exercises) of Hatha Yoga play a major role in the
physical and mental control of yoga. In Raja Yoga
the main practice is silent meditation. This brings
about physical and mental balance.
Relaxation (Savasana) If the body and mind are
subjected to constant overload, their performance
suffers. Yoga relaxation techniques help not only
to relieve existing stress symptoms (like muscle
tension and breathlessness) but also to develop resistance against external stress factors.

A yogic diet (vegetarian) is simple, natural and
promotes health. It is digestible and easy for the
body to absorb. It consists in proper food choices
which have the most positive effect on body and
mind, at the same time causing the least harm to
other living beings and the environment.
Positive thinking and meditation (Vedanta and
Dhyana) are the keys to peace of mind. By controlling the mind, we can eliminate negative
thought patterns and experience inner peace.

6
As early as the 1970s,
Swami Vishnudevananda
provided the impetus
to establish a spiritual
oasis in the Alps. The
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta
Retreat House was
founded in 1998 in a
wide valley of the
Kitzbühel Mountains
surrounded by fresh
air, pure water, green
meadows, quiet woods,
medicinal plants along
scenic foot-paths,
sparkling brooks and
pristine lakes.
THE UNIVERSAL SCIENCE OF YOGA has been practised for thousands of
years in India, where people have retreated to the peace of the Himalayas for
yoga and meditation. Today many people all over the world appreciate yoga
as a very open and integral system, which provides a positive philosophy for
everyday life.
At the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House, people have been finding their way
back to a holistic lifestyle in harmony with nature, benefitting from increased
resistance to stress, greater lung capacity, weight loss, regeneration and
improved functioning of all body systems.
Today in the West there is no doubt about the healing and preventive benefits
of yoga. Yoga illuminates the search for health and a deeper meaning in life.
Everyone can practise yoga, no matter their age, culture or religion.
Experience for yourself the benefits of a physical, mental and spiritual
regeneration, and discover how it feels to be a healthier and more relaxed
person.
You can visit on your own, with a friend or bring the entire family. Everybody
in our team is dedicated to the practice of yoga, and we are looking forward
to being of service to you during your stay.
“An ounce of practice is better than tons of theory.”
Swami Sivananda

Meditation
The morning and evening meditation sessions are
the most peaceful hours at the Retreat House.
The practical guidance for positive thinking and
mental relaxation combined with concentration exercises gradually lead to inner peace. The chanting of Sanskrit mantras (healing and energising
sound sequences) deepens the experience of peace.
A reading from yoga texts gives inspiring insights
into yoga philosophy and psychology.
A WIDE VARIETY OF PROGRAMMES
Choose from a wide variety of programmes.

Yoga classes
The morning and afternoon yoga asana classes
consist of breathing exercises, Sun Salutation, basic
postures, variations and deep relaxation under the
guidance of an experienced instructor. Individual
corrections and detailed instructions allow participants to perform the exercises safely and in a relaxed manner, enhancing flexibility and mobility.
Newcomers and ‘rusty’ students are encouraged to
practise simple variations of the basic poses. Special
guidance is available for those with back problems
or other health conditions such as general exhaustion. Advanced participants are encouraged to try
classical variations and hold the postures longer.
Weather permitting, the yoga classes are held
outdoors under large sun shades on our beautiful
cedar platform, which affords a spectacular view of
the Wild Kaiser mountain range.
Course language
English-speaking guests are welcome throughout
the year. Yoga classes are taught in both English
and German and all lectures in German are translated simultaneously into English.
Our team of instructors
Our team of yoga teachers have all graduated
from the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Courses,
guaranteeing an authentic experience. All our
instructors lead a yogic lifestyle and are competent
teachers and advisers.
Walks
The guided silent walks at the Retreat House offer
moments to treasure – the gentle rising and setting
of the sun, the various phases of the moon, the
hidden beauties of the valley, the panoramic view
of the Wild Kaiser and Hohe Tauern mountains,

vacation schedule.
Meals are served twice daily buffet-style and are
made from fresh, organic ingredients using only
pure oils. During your stay you will enjoy a variety
of whole grains, carefully cooked vegetables, side
salads, expertly prepared pulses, dairy products
from the best organic dairy farms in Tyrol, homemade bread, jams and stewed fruits as well as
imaginative desserts. Vegan or gluten-free dishes
can be prepared on request. Dishes containing
potential allergens are appropriately labelled.
You can get individual advice on how to choose the
right food combinations for your constitution.
Please refrain from drinking black tea and coffee
during your stay, as these are not conducive to the
yoga practice.
Accommodation and meals at Hotel Pointner
For many years the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House
has worked closely with Alexandra and Florian
Pointner, the proprietors of the hotel across from
the Retreat House. The vegetarian menu plans offer
a wholesome and balanced diet. The entire hotel
has been certified by Austria-Bio-Garantie, Austria’s
leading inspection body for organic businesses. It
was awarded the European eco-label as well as
Austria’s gastronomic accolade ‘Grüne Haube’ for
wholefood and natural cuisine. The Pointners have
been running their farm according to organic and
ecological guidelines since 1995.
Various fruits, vegetables and herbs are freshly prepared in the hotel’s kitchen. All guest rooms have
wooden floors, health mattresses (except for dormitories and shared rooms), shower, toilet, hair dryer
and telephone. Most rooms have a balcony. The
hotel uses green electricity, pellet heating and a
solar-powered hot water system.
Massage and sauna
An experienced certified masseuse offers classical
massage, foot reflexology, shiatsu and lymphatic
drainage. The Retreat House also offers relaxing
full-body Ayurvedic oil massages for women with
an Ayurvedic massage therapist from South India.
You can book your treatments on arrival.
A Finnish and a low-temperature sauna are avail
able in Hotel Pointner.
Donate some time
The community feeling in the Retreat House is
based on ‘voluntary service’. All staff teach and
work on a volunteer basis. You can also lend a
hand if you like. Volunteering creates a cheerful atmosphere in which to meet other people and develop a positive motivation for our actions.
Individual coaching
We offer 30-minute one-on-one sessions with an
experienced senior instructor. Some personal advice
and tips are often enough to bring about substantial progress in the group practice at the Retreat
House and in your own practice at home.

In workshops and special asana classes, you will
learn various exercise sequences that you can easily practise at home. Lectures, PowerPoint shows,
recommended readings and one-on-one talks will
help to broaden your knowledge of yoga.
Special guests & cultural programmes
Workshops and lectures with renowned special
guests from around the world on topics of health,
science, philosophy and culture. International
artists are regular visitors to the Retreat House: for
example, Eastern spiritual discourse accompanied
by classical Indian music, South Indian dance,
colourful temple ceremonies with mantra
recitation.
The vegetarian diet
Light, nutritious and freshly prepared meals are an
integral part of the yoga vacation. The Sivananda
Yoga Vedanta Centres’ over 50 years of experience
in both East and West have gone into the development of menus which provide a more balanced nutrient intake, increased vitality and better digestion.
To this end, meals are prepared without eggs, garlic, onions, mushrooms, vinegar, radishes and leeks.
Please turn to the Retreat House with any questions you might have on the food served.

Living and teaching yoga
Swami Vishnudevananda developed the first yoga teachers’ training course
(TTC) in the West in 1969 as part of his vision of universal peace: The more
people experience peace within, the more this peace will manifest in outward
action. In this way, a glow of peace envelops the world. Today the yoga
teachers' training courses are under the supervision of senior instructors who
were personally trained by Swami Vishnudevananda.
The goal of this training programme is to produce qualified and inspiring
yoga teachers who are able to draw on their own practice and personal
discipline in imparting the yoga experience to others. To date, over 37,000
yoga teachers have completed the Sivananda Yoga Teachers' Training Course,
with another 1,000 graduates worldwide each year.
