From Davos, the challenging route first goes to Monstein, the highest-altitude brewery in Switzerland. Albulatal valley offers the fascination of wild landscapes and masterly engineering. The Albula railway line has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Beyond the Albula Pass is the enchanting Zuoz, Engadin’s most beautiful town featuring oriental bathing culture. Impressive photographic art and ancient church painting lie in store ahead of the Flüela Pass, before the route returns from the tranquil Klosters with its award-winning gastronomy back to Davos. Davos Monstein Km 10 Category Local produce The village of Monstein with its two hundred inhabitants is situated an altitude of 625 metres. Switzerland’s highest-altitude brewery is tucked in between the rustic wooden houses of immigrants from Vallais. Beer has been brewed in the former Alpine dairy since 2001. Swiss hops, spring water and local malt ensure a truly authentic taste. The beer is served across the road at Hotel-Restaurant Ducan, where it is also sold along with cheese and bread with a spicy ale aroma. It was here that sculptor Andreas Hofer took up residence. He is well-known far beyond Davos for his wooden angels measuring up to 20 metres in height. The Sculpture Trail leads from his studio up to Stafelalp. The trail is lined with items from the international sculptors’ symposium held every year in Davos. Golf Club Alvaneu Bad. Alvaneu Bad Km 32 Category Golf courses The 18-hole golf course extends along the banks of the crystal-clear River Albula in the valley of the same name. Set between small lakes and ancient trees, the games leads across the easily walkable course to the hole 9 tee-off on an elevation at the centre of the village. Players of all handicaps will be challenged by the water obstacles while enjoying the view of an unspoiled landscape including the famous land- water bridge of the Albula railway line. Be sure to reserve tee-off times in advance! Good to know The Alvaneu Baths are right next door. The sources of the region feed these small but exquisite thermal baths with healing, sulphurous water. The inside and outside pools are kept at a pleasant temperature of 34°C. There are also organic saunas, jacuzzi beds, neck showers and massages for relaxation purposes. Albula Railway Museum. Bergün Km 43 Category Museums The first Rhaetian railway thundered from Thusis to St. Moritz in 1903. It runs along the tracks in wide bends, climbing to an altitude of 1078 metres before winding its way swiftly down into the valley. The total distance covered is 62 kilometres, including 137 bridges and 42 tunnels. The Albula railway line is one of Europe’s most exciting Alpine rail tracks and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The new museum is dedicated to the past, present and future vision of this engineering masterpiece, giving a first-hand insight into its revolutionary significance for the region. Over a distance of 8 kilometres it leads past the most attractive sections of the Albula railway line. Panels provide information on construction and routing. La Punt Chamues Km 66 Category Food/drink A warm-hearted “Allegra” from Sonja Martin welcomes guests to the old farmhouse dating back to 1565. At that time, exhausted travellers crossing the Albula pass would stop here to rest. Today Andreas Martin is the chef, creating regional specialities with ingredients fresh from the market. Both Gault Millau and Guide Michelin are highly impressed. In the four cosy wood-panelled parlours offering a view of the roaring mountain torrents, roast Grisons Alpine lamb rack is served with a glass of one of approx. 50 Veltliner wines. Good to know Throughout the building there are works of contemporary artists from the Grisons region who are known well beyond Engadin. So it’s worth taking a walk through the building! Castell Zuoz. Castell Zuoz presents a blend of art and architecture. There is a highly reputable collection of modern art in and around the castle, which itself dates back to 1912. The reputation of the hotel’s Red Bar by Zurich architect Gabrielle Hächler and multimedia artist Pipilotti Rist goes far beyond the region. Galerie Peter Vann. S-Chanf Km 74 Category Places of interest Peter Vann is an important photographer who has travelled all over the world. He has taken up residence in this little village in Upper Engadin. In his private house and in the gallery opposite he puts on temporary exhibitions of his own landscape photographs of the Engadin mountains as well as works by local artists. The atmosphere in the old houses with their modern design is easy-going - just like Vann himself. Anyone visiting him will be obliged to play a round of pinball. Fourteen of his best photographs can be combined in a frame with the date sheets as mounts. National Park Centre - Swiss National Park. Zernez Km 89 Category Places of interest The Swiss National Park was founded 100 years ago. The first in Switzerland and the oldest in the Alps, it is now home to over 650 plant species and 130 animal species. The new National Park Centre was opened in Zernez in May 2008. The centrepiece is the visitors’ centre, a monolithic lightweight concrete structure whose architecture is itself worth a visit. This striking building by Grisons architect Valerio Olgiati houses such delights as a virtual flight across the nature reserve. Hatecke. Zernez Km 90 Category Local produce For years now, Ludwige Hatecke and his superb gourmet cold cuts have epitomised Engadin meat specialities. The grandson of a Hamburg butcher produces his sausages from pure meats, allowing them to mature for several months. The venison, chamois, lamb and beef used come from Engadin only. His father still goes hunting for the game delicacies at the ripe age of 81. Hatecke has his own slaughterhouse and the meat is processed to create incomparable delights - for both the palate and the eyes. Good to know Salsiz is a particular cold cut speciality of the Swiss canton of Grisons. Hatecke is wellknown throughout Switzerland for his triangular variety. His cold cuts are also available in shops in St. Moritz and Scuol. Lavin Church. Km 101 Category Places of interest One of the most valuable works of art in Grisons is concealed in this little church dating back to 1480: on a trip through the region, artists from Lombardy stopped off in Lavin and decorated choir walls, choir vaults and the choir arc front wall with their paintings. The impressive cycle was covered with lime wash during the reformation. It was not uncovered again until 1955, and the paintings themselves were painstakingly restored from 2001 onwards. After more than 500 years they can now be fully appreciated once again. Delicious meals from the region are prepared according to time-honoured recipes using fresh ingredients. If the Flüela Pas is closed the car shuttle station Vereina is not far.
