ROYAL HACIENDAS OPENS IN RIVIERA MAYA
Cancún-based vacation ownership company, Royal Resorts, has announced the July opening of its latest resort, The Royal Haciendas, located at the heart of the Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Founded in 1975, and with five resorts already in Cancún, it was a logical move for Royal Resorts to expand its Mexican Caribbean operations
to the Riviera Maya, now also rated as one of the world’s most popular
travel destinations,famous for its beaches,reefs,nature theme parks and
Mayan archaeological sites. The developers selected a beach and golf
community five minutes to the north of district capital Playa del Carmen
and 30 minutes from Cancún International Airport, to be the site of The
Royal Haciendas.

south of Cancún. People love the area, its natural beauty and laid-back

The Royal Haciendas will comprise two haciendas, Hacienda del Sol
(Hacienda of the Sun) and Hacienda de la Luna (Hacienda of the Moon),
each one a 5-star resort community with 252 villas apiece.The first phase
of Hacienda del Sol has 55 villas and the entire project will be finished by
2009.The twin resorts are expected to create 1,000 permanent jobs for
the Riviera Maya.
The emphasis at The Royal Haciendas is on luxury and comfort in a natural setting. With its classic Mexican arches, columns and terraces, the
low-rise architecture is inspired by the grand old haciendas or estates of
the Yucatán which prospered from the cultivation of henequen or sisal
in the late 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century.
Showcasing the best features of the Royal Resorts in Cancún, the villas
at The Royal Haciendas represent the culmination of almost 30 years of
vacation villa design experience. All villas have two bedrooms and two
bathrooms, a spacious living and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen
and an ocean-view terrace. Additional touches of luxury include flat
screen TVs, DVD players, wireless internet access, granite counter tops
and a whirlpool tub for two on the terrace.
The villas are available in two floor plans: the Ocean-view villa
(1,648sq.ft) and the Penthouse and Beachfront Villa (1,722sq.ft), which
in addition to the aforementioned features, also has a small lounge area
in the master bedroom and a larger master bathroom with closets.
Amenities at The Royal Haciendas include pools, floodlit tennis courts,
a gym and massage service, an activity program for children and adults,
kid’s areas, convenience store, travel agency and car rental.
Guests can discover contemporary Mexican cuisine at the beachfront
restaurant called La Palapa del Sol or enjoy lunch at the poolside Aqua
Grill where the menu features everything from gazpacho and tangy
shrimp and grapefruit salad to Cajun-style salmon, grilled seafood and
steaks. They will also be able to order platters, salads and main course
items from a gourmet express counter if they prefer to dine in their villa.
For evening entertainment,La Rotonda Bar will offer a selection of wines
from the world’s major wine producing regions, recorded and live music
for all tastes and DJ and Karaoke nights. Boutiques, specialty restaurants
and a spa will be added to the resort in phase 2 of the project.
In addition to The Royal Haciendas,the exclusive beach community will
host deluxe hotels, condominiums and some private residences. It will
have a Nick Price-designed 18-hole professional golf course and its own
“town center” with restaurants, open-air cafes, bars and boutiques.

The ancient Mayan city of Edzna, located 30 miles southeast of
Campeche City, is worth a visit. Dating back to 600 B.C. and abandoned
in the 15th century, Edzna is comprised of many interesting buildings
such as the Templo de Cinco Cuerpos (Temple of Five Stories) with five
levels, and the Templo de Mascaras (Temple of Masks), which features
head carvings with jaguar-like faces.

QUINTANA ROO STATE

YUCATAN STATE
Yucatan State’s world-famous archaeological sites, colonial cities, haciendas and resorts, beaches and distinct cuisine make it one of Mexico’s
premier travel destinations. Located in southeast Mexico in the north of
the peninsula after which it is named,Yucatan State is bordered on the
north by the Gulf of Mexico.
The best way to discover Yucatan State is to begin at its capital city of
Merida. Called the white city for its white colonial buildings, Merida was
founded in 1542 over the ruins of the ancient Mayan city Ichcaanziho,
and was built from the sacred stones of its temples. Merida is also the
gateway to the remains of the elegant sisal (henequen) haciendas that
were the backbone of the region’s economy during the last third of the
19th century. Many of these haciendas have been restored and converted into hotels.
Fusing strong Mayan and Caribbean influences,Yucatecan cuisine includes cochinita pibil, a dish of pit-baked, shredded pork wrapped in banana leaves and served with a sauce of annatto seeds, sour orange and
spices; and sopa de lima, a lime-based, spicy broth laced with tortilla
strips and vegetables.

Aruba walked away with a bevy of top honors
at the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference
(CHIC), an annual conference presented by the
Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA). The island
brought home four prestigious awards, including 2006 Caribbean Employee of the Year,Large
Hotel Association Executive of the Year, Best
Performer in Sustainable Tourism Practices and
the Most Improved Hotel in that Category.

OUALIE BEACH RESORT TAKES FIRST PLACE IN 7TH
INTERNATIONAL FOODSERVICE COMPETITION
Executive Chef Jason Bishop from the Oualie Beach Resort on the island of Nevis recently took first place honors in the 7th International
Foodservice Competition sponsored by the U.S. Meat Export
Federation (USMEF).
The competition was held in Mexico City on August 2 at the Le
Cordon Bleu cooking school. Chef Jason entered two original “home
chef” recipes: Beef Bottom Sirloin Tri-Tip and Pork Loin Roast/Chops.
Competing chefs were required to use readily available ingredients
from the island and cooking styles that could easily be repeated in
Caribbean kitchens.
All the finalists were evaluated by a panel of five judges on the merits of originality, versatility and the ease of adaptability to a home
Caribbean cook as well as the kitchen skills and sanitation of the competing chef.
Chef Jason’s winning recipe will be used in various promotions this
coming year and will also be featured in a consumer publication to be
developed by USMEF.
In addition to a $1,000 cash award, Chef Jason received a nine-day,
all-expense paid trip to tour major venues in the food, wine and meat
industries within the United States.

JAMAICA'S TOURISM CONTINUES UPWARD TREND
Jamaica’s tourist arrivals for the six-month period of January through
June 2006 have shown steady growth with an increase of 17.1 percent
over the same period last year. Preliminary figures for July 2006 indicate
a continuation of this strong growth trend with a 22.5 percent increase,
over July 2005.
In June, the United States accounted for the vast majority, with
124,709 stopover arrivals, representing an increase of 19.8 percent. The
heaviest activity came from the northeast market. Other non-U.S. markets also showed an increase with 7,877 stopover arrivals from Canada,
an increase of 33.3 percent while stopover arrivals from Europe was

19,158, an increase of 11.2 percent.
The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) has attributed the strong growth to an
increase in airlift to the island as well as the considerable increase in
Jamaica’s room inventory.
Interim Director of Tourism Donnie Dawson lauds the efforts of the JTB
Sales team, a key element to the increase in the number of visitors to
Jamaica. “In addition to the various initiatives,including promotions and

OPEN NEW VENUES, EXPAND FOR
TOURISTS
With the opening of the new Puerto Rico
Convention Center in November 2005, Puerto
Rico continues to expand and improve its
tourism product. From new hotel construction
to major renovation projects and expansions,
Puerto Rico remains committed to providing
meeting planners and attendees with a widerange of premier accommodation options, as
well as superior meeting space and amenities
to serve the needs of this discerning market.
Puerto Rico kicked off 2006 with more than
1.2 million square feet of meeting space following the opening of the new Puerto Rico
Convention Center. In addition to the Center,
groundbreaking on a 500-room headquarter
hotel to serve the Puerto Rico Convention
Center was scheduled to take place in June
2006.
The $175-million facility, to be located in the
heart of the Puerto Rico Convention Center
District is projected to open in late 2008.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, under
its Sheraton banner, will manage the new
Convention Center’s flagship property. The
hotel’s contemporary “urban resort” design includes a large, open lobby, casino and entertainment complex with music hall for live performances. Two ballrooms, banquet and
meeting rooms, a full-service spa, restaurants,
shops and parking is also included in the plan.
The rooftop will feature a pool with cabanas,
tropical gardens and views of Old San Juan and
the harbor. Described as a “beach without
sand,” the area is designed to bring the
Caribbean into the Convention Center District
for conventioneers. In addition to the hotel,the
District’s fountains and promenades which includes much of the landscaping in the area, is
scheduled to be completed by August 2006.

for several other major properties.
The Hotel Cervantes opened early this year in
Old San Juan. The luxury, exclusive hotel includes a 2,000 sq. ft. Presidential Suite along
with 11 additional luxury suite rooms, a spa,
café and restaurant.
The new Courtyard by Marriott San Juan
Miramar opened in March 2006. The property,
which was formerly known as the Excelsior, offers 136 standard king and double rooms.
The Renaissance La Concha Hotel & Casino is
expected to open by the end of 2006 with 248
rooms in its first phase. The second phase will
be finished when the Vanderbilt opens in 2008
and will include 250 additional rooms.
The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel is scheduled to
open the third quarter of 2008. The 300-room
luxury property will feature 20,000 sq. ft. of
meeting space, a gourmet restaurant, bistro,
spa and two oceanfront pools.
The Embassy Suites Hotel Dorado added a
new ballroom to the property in March 2006.
The Las Palmas Ballroom offers 5,530 square
feet of meeting space, bringing the total
amount of meeting space at the property up to
12,800 square feet.
The Paradisus Puerto Rico Hotel & Resort in
Río Grande has converted 144 of its 486 rooms
into condo-hotel properties. In addition, the
property will begin construction on a new $15
million ocean development of the Sol Meliá
Vacation Club (SMVC) to include 27 timeshare
units. The project is scheduled for completion
by the end of 2007.
The Horned Dorset Primavera, a Relais &
Chateaux Hotel, has nearly completed remodeling and construction on 17 new exclusive
condo-villas on the property. The villas offer
oceanfront, ocean view, and ocean view with
garden.
LXR Luxury Resorts, which now owns the El
Conquistador Resort & Gold Door Spa in Las
Croabas, has broken ground on the construction of a new $27 million conference center at
the property. Scheduled to open in March
2007, the property will feature two adjacent
conference areas,with a total of four ballrooms,
providing meeting planners with more square
feet of indoor meeting space per available
sleeping room than any other resort in the
Caribbean. LXR also owns the Condado Plaza
Hotel & Casino and the El San Juan Hotel &
Casino (both formerly Wyndham properties)
and has more than $200 million earmarked for
upgrades and expansions in their portfolio of
Puerto Rico properties.
Following the completion of a $120 million
upgrade and expansion at the Ponce Hilton,
which included the addition of the Costa
Caribe Golf & Country Club,the property will be
adding a 60-unit condo-hotel, followed by the
addition of 200 timeshare suites. The project is
expected to take 10 years to complete.

Divi Resorts has introduced the new “Create
Your Own” Dive Packages. These packages are
available throughout 2006 and 2007 at the Divi
Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino in Bonaire and
the Divi Tiara Beach Resort in Cayman Brac.
With the “Create Your Own” Dive Packages
divers can dive as little or as much as they like
by creating a personalized packages which feature discounted room rates and meals. Threenight dive packages including accommodations,breakfast and round-trip airport transfers
start at $238 ppdo at Divi Flamingo and $194
ppdo at Divi Tiara (this price does not include
diving). Divers are required to purchase at least
two days of diving per person, and then may
add additional nights, meals and diving as desired.
Add-on diving options to the “Create Your
Own” Dive Packages at Divi Flamingo include
California-based Scuba Voyages is offering
seven-night trips to St. Vincent and the
Grenadines starting at $1,765 ppdo, airfare not
included. Packages booked for travel by
December 16, 2006, are eligible for a $100 discount per person or an eighth night free. These

WORLDWIDE TREASURE HUNT
ENDS IN THE ISLANDS OF THE
BAHAMAS
The worldwide race to uncover a buried Volvo
XC90 V8 SUV valued at $82,000 ended in The
Islands Of The Bahamas with a victory for one
modern day “pirate.” David Hutz, a 30 year-old
computer programmer from Herndon,Va., discovered the luxury SUV on Little Harbour,
Abaco in The Bahamas,after completing a challenging two-month global, multimedia treasure hunt for the vehicle that Volvo Car
Company secretly hid as part of its sponsorship
of Disney’s blockbuster, “Pirates of the
Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”
Unlike the pirates of yesteryear, Hutz did not
sail to The Bahamas on a sinister ship but instead flew to an undisclosed location on Abaco,
which turned out to be the Abaco Club at
Winding Bay, to compete against six other finalists representing the United States, Japan,
United Kingdom, Spain and Austria, in the final
leg of the “Survivor”-like race. Utilizing the
many monuments of Abaco, including its famous Candy Striped Lighthouse, Hope Town
Post Office, beaches and even a jailhouse dating back to colonial settlers, finalists deciphered clues and conducted searches on foot,
boat, motor vehicle and helicopter.
The excitement of the hunt will be available
to the public as of August 25, when Volvo premieres a series of Webisodes chronicling the
