In the holiday village there is something on offer for all ages. The medieval village of Pentolina (425 m above sea level) is idyllically situated on the hillside of “Alta Maremma” in the municipality of Chiusdino. Hapimag acquired the village in 1998, including 22 hectares of land within the same hunting area. This area has been well-known for wild boar hunting for 200 years. The dense holm oak forest surrounding the resort hides one or two secrets... Pentolina is approximately 25 km from Siena, 80 km from Florence and 60 km from the coast, thus offering a wide range of activities and excursions. Small villages such as Chiusdino, Torri and Stigliano are located nearby. Here the inhabitants still live like their ancestors did decades ago. The Hapimag Resort itself is a converted earldom boasting modern comforts. In the holiday village you can expect a combination of culture, sport, nature and dining facilities. 5 6 Reception WE’RE HERE FOR YOU! How can we help? Our reception staff are always happy to help. Before Hapimag purchased the village and the old farming estate in 1998, it belonged to Count Scroffa. Nello D'Inghiramo, Feudal Lord of the Pietra Castle and owner of Pentolina, laid the foundational stone for the village on 9 February 1321. One remnant of the period is the quaint church ‘La Pieve’ of St. Bartholomew, dating back to the 11th century, where Hapimag regularly holds classical concerts. The last owner of Pentolina was Count Dadi Scroffa. His grandfather Bruno Scroffa acquired Pentolina in 1853. The family lived from agriculture and hunting. Wild boar hunting with the Count was so famous that hunters came from far and wideto hunt by his side. Since 1998, Hapimag has been the owner of the farming estate. Another historic feature of the region is the ruins of San Galgano Abbey (Abbazia di San Galgano) not far from Pentolina. It was built at the start of the 13th century. Hiking NEW EXPERIENCES AT EVERY TURN Pack your rucksack and strap on those hiking boots! Discover the surrounding area by foot on one of the many hiking paths. Twice a year, on 2 July and 16 August, horseback riders compete for the city wards of Siena, the socalled ‘contrade’ at one of the most famous – and toughest – horse races in Europe. The Piazza del Campo, a square in the centre of Siena with impressive architecture, is transformed into a sizzling competition arena. Palio is a real pleasure, but one that is taken very seriously: what matters is victory and victory alone. Television stations broadcast the race live, during which the horses and riders race three times around the square. The battle for the victory flag (Palio) only lasts 75 seconds. The preparations for the traditional event, which has fixed rules, start months ahead of the race. The tradition has been celebrated since the 13th century. Who is allowed to ride in the race? Ten of the 17 contrades take part. The seven that did not participate in the corresponding Palio the year before (July or August), and the remaining three starting places will be drawn amongst the other contrades. Excursion tips SOOTHING CLASSICAL SOUNDS A classical concert in the quaint church “La Pieve” is indeed music to the ears: wonderful acoustics and the mystical ambience of the 11th century provide a special atmosphere. Regular classical music concerts organised by Hapimag take place in the “La Pieve” chapel, which is steeped in history. Performers from Siena, Florence and Venice appear with interesting repertoires from September to June. Please see the weekly programme for times and prices of the excursions. We will be happy to take bookings at reception. 13 14 Wine CHIANTI THE CLASSIC The mild, sun-drenched climate of Tuscany produces excellent wines. The most prominent is the Chianti Classico. Those who like a full-bodied red wine will love the local wines. Every wine connoisseur is familiar with the Tuscan wine Chianti. It was previously a synonym for Italian wine per se and was traditionally sold in a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket called a ‘fiasco’. Nostalgic memories of the bottle remain, but the bottle itself is history, just like the simple table wine of yesteryear. Whereas one previously added white wine to the Chianti, today it is only pressed from red grapes, mainly Sangiovese. The quality and shelf life were improved considerably with the DOCG status. Today the Chianti Classico pleases the palates of connoisseurs. A rooster for quality Only wines from the area of origin of Chianti can be sold with the brand name Chianti Classico. The best of these wines bear the trademark ‘Gallo Nero’ (black rooster), which is monitored by the consortium ‘Chianti Classico’ in Greve in Chianti. Wine BRUNELLO: A PRESTIGIOUS WINE The people of Montalcino are proud of the 2000 year old history of the village. And they can also be proud of their wines: Brunello red wine has its origins here. The Brunello of today cannot be compared to that of yesteryear. The name of the once simple country wine became famous in the 14th century. The grape variety Sangiovese, from which one presses the single- variety wine, was not yet known at the time, however. In addition to the full-bodied Brunello di Montalcino, its younger brother Rosso di Montalcino is also pressed around the small town of Montalcino. It is also a single-variety Sangiovese, but slightly lighter and less complex. Another well-known product from the wine region is the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It consists of 70 per cent Sangiovese grapes and can be blended with other grape types. Our sommelier is happy to tell you more about Tuscan wines. Information on our wine-tasting sessions can be obtained in the restaurant, where you can also register for the wine tasting. A good wine needs time A Brunello di Montalcino must be stored for at least five years, 24 months of which are in a wooden barrel. The title ‘Riserva’ can only be used if the wine has been stored for five years, six months of which are in the bottle. The alcohol content must reach at least 12.5 per cent by volume. This noble wine easily reaches this figure, usually coming in at 13 to 14.5 per cent. 15 HAPIMAG RESORT PENTOLINA 1 7 8 5 1 1 6 G 2 21 D 22 ‘I Tre Tigli’ Restaurant Bar/Pool bar ‘La Bottega’ shop Reception InfoCentre Active Team Office Fitness room Otium wellness centre Doctor's practice Bins Car park Parking space for wheel chair users Pizza oven ‘La Pieve’ chapel Washing machines Heated swimming pool Table tennis Archery Boccia Youth meeting point Mini Maxi Club Herb garden Playground Organic vegetable garden Chess Beach volleyball Tennis Sports field Sunbathing lawn 6 27 A F 9 8 B 12 11 4 16 13 17 10 18 14 19 15 20 C 3 E 5 23 Billiards Stage Amphitheatre Gathering point Tree house Picnic group Pentolina’s pathways 24 26 18 Mini & Maxi Club YOUR KIDS AND VULPO – THE PERFECT TEAM In his cave, 'La tana', our mascot Sir Vulpo is waiting with a varied programme to greet your kids. Enjoyment & Gastronomy ‘I TRE TIGLI’ RESTAURANT THREE TREES WITH A STORY CITY Three splendid lime trees add a special flair to the square in front of the ‘I Tre Tigli’ restaurant and give the restaurant its name. And they are part of the family history of Count Scroffa. It was grandfather Bruno Scroffa who planted the three lime trees, at least that's how Count Dadi Scroffa tells the story. He remembers well: Dadi Scroffa and his brother had great fun jumping over the still small trees. The trees grew into splendid, shady trees, and a trendy restaurant was built in the former garage of the Count. Here we treat you to all kinds of Tuscan specialities. As well as the à-la-carte menu, you can expect various culinary special events. We are happy to take table reservations on extension 4150. 21 22 Enjoyment & Gastronomy TUSCAN CUISINE AND SPECIAL EVENTS Enjoyment is paramount in Tuscany, day after day. This culinary get-together carries on the tradition of the weekly meeting of the Count’s family with peasant families.
