THE CADILLAC & LASALLE CLUB MUSEUM
The Cadillac & LaSalle Museum & Research Center, Inc. (the CLCMRC) was founded by the Cadillac &
LaSalle Club in 1995. The CLCMRC is separate from, although related to, the Cadillac & LaSalle Club.
The CLCMRC is a 501 (c)(3) Michigan corporation. As such, gifts and donations are tax-deductible as
charitable contributions to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Following the founding an extensive planning and site location search period ensued. The site search
included the possibility of either a stand alone facility or partnering with another museum. In 2010 the
CLCMRC board of directors voted unanimously to partner with the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory
Corners, Michigan. The Gilmore Carriage House was leased. In it the Cadillac Gallery was established
to display Cadillacs, LaSalles and related memorabilia until the museum building was constructed.
Initiated concurrently in 2010 was the Celebrating the Standard capital campaign to raise the funds
required to construct the permanent museum building. Several building designs were considered. The
building design evolution story is chronicled on the February photo of this calendar.
In the summer of 2013, the CLCMRC board authorized construction of the new museum building.
Ground breaking occurred on September 29, 2013. The ceremony included an Iwo Jima style raising
of a very rare 1930s Cadillac and LaSalle sign. Construction activities met with brutal winter weather
that included record snowfalls and numerous sub zero temperatures. But the construction progress
continued. Surprisingly, the keys to the museum building were received on August 15, 2014, only six
weeks later than scheduled. In the brief six week period that remained until the Grand Opening the
interior displays were designed, built and positioned, signs were selected and erected, lights were
installed and adjusted and numerous details addressed.
The Grand Opening occurred as planned on September 28, 2014. It was a spectacular warm, fall
day with a picture perfect blue sky and an overflow crowd of Cadillac and LaSalle enthusiasts. The
ceremony incorporated a tradition used by dealerships throughout the 1940s and 1950s to heighten
customer anticipation prior to new car announcements. The showroom windows were covered with
paper and a “teaser” sign. These remained and were removed on the new model announcement. The CLCMRC also has an off site facility in which data on Cadillac Motor Car, Cadillacs and LaSalles
are archived. Archives services are available to enthusiasts, automotive writers, authors, historians,
teachers and the general public. Visit our website: cadillaclasallemuseum.org

NOTES:
THE MUSEUM BUILDING
In 1948 General Motors published a book that contained fifteen dealership architectural design renderings. The book offered various designs to
encourage dealers to update their facilities in preparation for the post World War II demand for automobiles that was forecast for the 1950s.
Design $5 was selected by the Cadillac & LaSalle Museum & Research Center building committee to be used as the basis for the design for
the museum building. A short time after the design was approved an article with photographs of the newly remodeled Pemberton Cadillac
dealership in Toledo, Ohio was discovered in the museum archives in a 1949 issue of the Cadillac Serviceman. The similarity is striking! Additional
Cadillac dealerships constructed using the same basic design have also been identified in New Jersey and Illinois.
Information provided by Steve Taylor, owner of Taylor Cadillac, the successor to Pemberton Cadillac, provided additional information. The
design concept was a collaborative effort among Cadillac, General Motors and the head of design at Libby Owens Ford (LOF) Glass. The use
of floor to ceiling plate glass in showrooms was a departure from the usual practice at that time. It enabled excellent views of the vehicles in
the showroom from the street. The Pemberton Cadillac dealership design was featured in architectural seminars and in articles in architectural
publications.
