Township of Madawaska Valley: Front Line Customer Service
Railway Station staff and volunteers present a friendly, welcoming face to visitors. Customer service is our top priority.
We aim to help visitors (and residents) make the most of their stay in the Valley. Every member of staff receives professional
customer service training and we do our best to stay up to date with current information about life and leisure here.
To monitor our level of customer service, we participate in the OHTO Ontario Highland Tourism Organization
“Mystery Shopper” program. We are proud to have received positive (even glowing) reports.
Our communication to the public includes our online presence on the Township website, arts centre website and social media (see below).

Visitor Information Centre and Customers
An essential aid to understanding and improving our services is to track and analyze our visitor numbers and obtain event feedback (VIC,
tradeshows, festival vendors/attendees). We have prepared a few charts so you can see how we compare to other visitor information
centres in Renfrew County, as well as a deeper dive into our own numbers here, year on year.
Why are our numbers so much higher?
12000
• Our facility is an animated space meaning it is not just an information centre. We
help visitors to experience that tourism “sweet spot” as identified in the 2009 MV
Economic Development Strategic Plan, where culture (arts and history) crosses
over with wilderness adventure. The abundance of lakes, rivers and wilderness in
the Madawaska Valley combined with a strong sense of cultural identity for visitors
and seasonal residents and has created a long history of cottage life here.
• We are the only year-round VIC on highways 60 and 62 through Renfrew County
• Our geographic location is the crossroads for visitors to
Algonquin Park from both East and South (Hwy 60 and Hwy 62).
10000
The Railway Station in Barry’s Bay has over twice as
many visitors as the next busiest VIC in Renfrew County.
Cobden has 4,458 annual visitors
Barry’s Bay has 9,799 annual visitors

Promotional Presence
Barry’s Bay | Com b ermere | Wilno
Our main printed promotional piece is the MV Recreation
Map which lists the many features of our township. With
buy-in from local tourism operators, we printed 5000 in
June 2014. By winter of 2015, we had distributed nearly
3000 at the Visitor Information Centre and 2000 at the
2014 Snowmobile and PowerSports/ATV Show in Toronto.
We also had a presence at the OVTA tradeshow in both 2014
and 2015 so we could educate Visitor Information Centre staff
and other front-line customer service employees throughout
the Ottawa Valley. In 2015 we shared space with the OVTA at
the Ottawa Outdoor Show. Where possible we share space
and costs to test the waters at expensive trade shows.
OHTO OHvation Program
For the past three years, we have elected to participate in
the OHvation program co-ordinated by the Ontario Highlands
Tourism Organization (OHTO) which is the provincially
designated tourism region that we fall into. In the OHvation
program participating Visitor Information Centres are visited
by “mystery shoppers” who evaluate the facility according
to pre-set criteria. We never know when they are going to
come. Here is how we have scored in the last two years:

Culture is a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors and
artifacts which distinguishes life in one group from life in another
group. Culture groups can be as large as a country or as small as
a family. Culture encompasses both the tangible and intangible
(e.g. contemporary art, historical artifacts, buildings as well as
unwritten traditions, stories and values are part of culture).
What is the Function of Culture?
The function of culture can be difficult to clearly define. Because
culture is woven so tightly into the fabric of our existence, it is difficult
to isolate and examine independently. The following line from the City
of Dryden's cultural plan succinctly conveys the function of culture:
“A sense of place;
who we are,
where we came from
and what we will become.”
Some examples of the cultural resources
in the Township of Madawaska Valley are…
• The creative cultural industry (artists, musicians, dancers, writers,
designers, photographers, artisans, craft-makers, architects, etc.)
• Community cultural organizations (historical and
genealogy groups, and The MV Horticultural Society)
• Cultural spaces and facilities (MV Library, The Railway
Station, Mission House Museum, Kashub Heritage Centre,
Madonna House Museum and Opeongo Seniors Centre)
Hot Glass
Remembering Clark Guettel
Exhibition runs:
Aug 31st - Oct 6th
Sponsored by:
• Cultural heritage (cemeteries, heritage buildings, historic sites)
• Natural heritage (parks, waterfalls, natural history, scenic lookouts)
• Festivals and events (Heritage Cup, Kashub Day, Bay Day, Canada
Day, Artisan Festival, CO Blitz, Taste of the Valley and Studio Tour).
• We also have a multitude of intangible cultural assets
such as language, stories and traditions.

Culture is an Income Generator
The Conference Board of Canada produced a report in 2009 that stated for every dollar in income a cultural
organization generates, $1.84 goes back into the community in which that organization is located.

Through The Letter Box - Postal Art
What is postal art?
Postal or Mail Art is an artistic movement centered
on sending small scale art works through the postal
system. It started in America during the 1950's and
has become a global movement.
Art For Everyone
The art centre offers different
types of exhibitions so that
everyone has the opportunity
to exhibit their art work:
MARCH 25, 2015
Solo Artist Exhibits
i.e. Bozica Radjenovic
8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
OPEONGO
SENIORS’ CENTRE
BARRY’S BAY
Themed Group Exhibits
i.e. Mapping the Opeongo Line in Art
Retrospectives
i.e. Grandfather’s Collection
Open Exhibitions
i.e. The Found Art Competition
You are invited to join us in a special one-day event exploring
the many ways that the arts and culture promote vibrant and healthy rural
communities. How can we do an even better job of supporting the cultural
sector’s contributions to our economic and social wellbeing?
THE GATHERING is for people working and volunteering in the arts and
culture sector in located in rural western Renfrew County.
The morning session will be dedicated to local employees and volunteers.
Guest speakers, politicians and other officials are invited to join the group
for lunch and the afternoon session.
BE HEARD. MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
In the morning session we will identify local issues and potential actions to
support a sustainable, rural arts and culture sector. In the afternoon we will
be joined by guest speakers and policy makers. The results will be brought
to existing municipal and county-wide planning processes.
OTHER REASONS TO ATTEND:
• Cultural workers often work in isolation. This is a great opportunity to
expand your network and connect with other people doing similar work.
• Share your successes, voice your concerns, problem-solve, plan, and
explore potential partnerships and collaborations.
• Have a say in the direction of future cultural policy in Western Renfrew
County.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
Fill out a registration form and return it to The Barry’s Bay Railway Station

Friends of the Arts
The community of Madawaska Valley exists because human beings are innately creative.
We have to be creative to survive and beyond survival we must be creative to progress
and grow. The first European settlers in the Madawaska Valley had to be innovative
and creative to find ways to survive and evolve in the harsh conditions that they were
faced with. They didn’t have art galleries, theaters or movies to inspire them, but they
did have music, woodworking, quilting, knitting and embroidery. Participating in or
even simply observing creative expression alters our brain patterns and helps us to
look at problems in a new way which leads to innovation and discovery. Now that we
have a multitude of ways to express creativity in the Madawaska Valley our brains are
ever more ready to think up new ideas and implement them at work and at home.

Madawaska Valley Tourism and Marketing
As previously mentioned, OHTO and OVTA are among our tourism partners. Their
research unquestionably proves the value of tourism to the local economy.
Barry’s Bay | Com b ermere | Wilno
The “trickle-down effect” of every dollar spent by a tourist in our township can be estimated
by extrapolating from the Canadian Tourist Commission’s Tourism Industry Report 2012.
That report indicated that after the United States, visitors are most likely to come to
Canada from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, China and Japan.
Our Visitor Centre stats indicate this remains quite accurate, but we commonly
see visitors from many other European countries including, of course, Poland.
While the report concentrates on international visitors whose average daily
spend is $756, it is interesting to view the “trickle-down effect.”
Note that the amount spent varies on whether a visitor stays in a hotel or with friends and
relatives, but the report indicates that 49% of international visitors to Canada travel for
pleasure or holiday and only 27% fall into the Visiting Friends and Relatives category.
Trickle-Down Effect of Tourism Spending
2011 Tourist spending in Canada by category. Top 15 in-bound countries to Canada
This figure shifts for the local region, as seen in Haliburton Highlands, where a
September 2012 report indicated visits to family accounted for between 23% and
37% of the totals during the previous 12 months. While the Madawaska Valley is not
exactly the same as Haliburton Highlands, we are however geographically close!
Last fall we updated the Township’s five-year marketing action plan contained in the
2010–2014 Economic Development Strategic Plan. Some elements of our fall 2014
update to the township marketing plan included Market Assessment, Collaborators,
Target Customers, Existing Tourism Assets (cultural and outdoor recreational), and Product
Development (Existing, Recommendations and short/med/longterm projects).
Ride the Highlands is good example of a successful product produced with tourism
partners. Heritage Walk is good example of a successful product produced right here in the
Township, as are both the MV Recreation Map and the seasonal Recreation Guides.
Our stated 2015 Marketing Goals and Tactics were recommendations specifically
designed to address our tourism “sweet spot” of culture/wilderness adventure.

Mountain biking.
SECTION 7: Madawaska Valley Tourism and Marketing
We will continue to implement this strategy and in
2015–16 we aim to reflect the recommendations in
the newly-adopted MV Township Communications Plan.
We will adapt our marketing strategy to incorporate
where possible a public-relations approach using our
network of contacts, local tourism assistants, etc.
Public relations involves an expenditure of staff time rather
than outlay of funds on purchased ads but the result is
generally considered more cost-effective. Online strategies
will include where possible both targeting and tracking
mechanisms so that we can measure effectiveness.
Barry’s Bay | Com b ermere | Wilno
2014 Marketing Plan
Our 2014 Marketing Plan updated the Tourism Marketing
Action Plan contained in the Township of Madawaska Valley
Economic Development Strategic Plan 2010–2014.
It outlined our Marketing Goals for 2015:
a)Implement short-term product development
using our existing assets and Railway Station
programming. AS ABOVE/DONE.
b)Research and work towards implementation of mediumterm product development. IN PROGRESS/SEE 2016.
c)Lay the groundwork for long-term products.
This will include:
Customer service workshops for frontline staff
(township staff/local businesses).*
Tourism committee (citizens/local businesses/
township staff).*
Packaging workshops for local businesses
to network and learn to develop.*
Social media workshops for local businesses.*
*Deferred. In consultation with MV Twp management staff.
