Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College
Friday 1st April 2016
Academic Coaching
For the last three years we
have run our Academic
Coaching Programme. This
programme targets Years 11
and 12 boys with the goal of
raising their level of
achievement in NCEA at
Levels 1 and 2.
It also
provides the opportunity to
encourage boys to begin
thinking about and
investigating career pathways.
The programme occurs during
Form Time with the Form or
Deputy Form Teacher having a
one-on-one interview with
boys. An Educational Plan is
developed focusing on subject
strengths and weaknesses,
career aspirations, NCEA
requirements, academic goals
and steps needed to achieve
these goals and any barriers to
achievement identified.
This
programme is viewed as
valuable and motivating by the
boys and teachers, with
students survey responses
supporting its value.
Most form classes now have
two teachers allocated to them
to enable this process to occur.
This includes all teachers at
the College including members
of the Senior Leadership Team.
As part of this programme all
Year 11 boys have undertaken
t h e C a r e e r Q u e s t p r o fi l e
developed by Careers NZ, so I
would encourage you to
discuss the results with your
son.

Following on from the Form
Teacher Interviews with the
boys we are holding meetings
with parents and their sons and
Form Teacher.
As outlined in my previous
newsletter, the Academic
Coaching Interviews for
parents of Year 11 and Year 12
boys will be held on
Wednesday 13th April from
2.45pm. Parents of Year 11
and Year 12 boys can begin
booking interview times with
Form Teachers. Interviews can
be booked on the website:

The Event Code is 9gxyy.
Note: Your son is expected to
attend the interview with you to
maximize the value of the
discussion.
When booking interviews
please note that they are with
your son's Form Teacher and
not his Subject Teacher. The
opportunity to meet with Senior
Subject Teachers will be on
Thursday 5th May.
The focus of the meeting will
be a discussion about the
requirements to achieve
NCEA, your son’s academic
goals in NCEA and his
education plan for 2016.
Please ensure you mark this
date in your diary as it is
important you attend.
Representatives of tertiary
education institutions will be
available to provide information
about tertiary pathways and
option selection in order to
pursue specific qualifications.
An additional focus of the Year
12 interviews will be on gaining
an understanding of Vocational
Pathways and how these may
increase the engagement of
your son and the career
opportunities related to his
course of study.
Following up from these
interviews the boys will receive
regular updates on their
progress during the year. They
will know how many internal
credits they have gained and
what they are required to
achieve through Internal
Achievement Standards and
External Achievement
Standards.
The boys have
indicated this update was of
significant help last year in
motivating them to do the work
required to achieve their goals.
These regular updates also
enable us to identify individuals
at risk of not achieving NCEA
and put a programme of
additional intervention in place.
Those boys identified in this
category may not be granted
study leave as has previously
occurred during the College’s
internal examination periods or
the end-of-year NCEA exams.
They will remain at school
studying to assist them to gain
the Credits needed to gain the
qualification they are seeking.

NZ YOUTH JAZZ FESTIVAL
During Easter Weekend (Good
Friday and Easter Saturday),
our Big Band and Quartets
played to large audiences at

Festival held at Baycourt here
in Tauranga.
Our Big Band
received Gold for their
performance, whilst the Combo
"Plum Jam" of Elijah Taula,
Akash Dutta, Mitchell Nemeth,
Joe Julian and Joe Stanley
received Gold for Best Combo.
Akash received the Trophy for
Best Keyboardist, and Elijah
received the Trophy for Best
Vocalist.

Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival
The Otago University Bay Of Plenty
Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival
was held at Mt. Maunganui College
on the evening of Weds 30 March.
Students from the College entered 4
scenes for the festival: Coriolanus (15
mins), Hamlet (5 mins), Richard III (5
mins) and Love's Labours Lost (5

mins). 19 boys were involved. The
pieces were creative, inventive,
thought-provoking and often hilarious.
Congratulations go to Lachlan Crane
(Y13), who was selected for direct
e n t r y t o t h e N a t i o n a l Yo u t h
Shakespeare intensive training
school; a week-long camp to be held
in Dunedin later in the year. This is a
prestigious national placing that
allows Lachlan an opportunity to
perform alongside NZ's most talented
secondary school students and learn
from professionals in the NZ theatre
scene. It also presents a chance to
win a place in the Globe Theatre trip
to England next year.

SPORT - Congratulations
2016 NZ Secondary Schools
Canoe Slalom and Freestyle
Championships Wanaka
The Tauranga Boys’ College team of 22
paddlers competed in nine different
disciplines over six days of perfect weather
on the Hawea River near Wanaka.
Tauranga Boys’ College won its first National
Top NZ Kayaking School Trophy in 1996 and
after 20 years the 2016 team has again won
this coveted title for the seventeenth time. A
result unheralded in any other school sport in
this country. The three U18 C1 and K1 3
man teams gained all 3 medals in both
categories. The U16 Down River Classic and
Sprint paddlers, Jack Saies, Damian Torwick
and Charlie Bell dominated the competition,
winning all 3 medals in both categories. The
senior U18 team Callum Aitken, Jack
Canham and Daniel Tuiraviravi gained the
top 3 medals in the DR Individual Sprint. All
team members racing came away with a
medal, which ranks as one of the school’s
best kayaking results in many years. They
won the K1 3 man teams trophies in U14,
U16 and U18 age groups. The whole team
added up to the points tally and the coaches
advise that if they were to single out two
stand-out paddlers in each age group, it

With the Summer Sports Season
drawing to a close, now is the time
for boys to register for a winter sport.
I would encourage all our boys to
take advantage of the wide range of
sporting opportunities available at
the College.
Boys have been
advised of the process on a daily
basis through school notices, so it
will be worth checking that they have
completed the process if they want
to play sport for the College. If they
are unsure of the process, they
should see the Teachers in Charge
of the sport. TiC's of major winter

Summer Tournament Week
At today's assembly we farewelled over 160 boys who will represent
the College over the next week across the country in a wide range of
sports. These tournaments are the culmination of a long season of
training and highlight of the season. My thanks to all staff and
parents who provide the support for this to happen. The breadth of
activities is amazing and highlights the range of opportunities
available to boys at Tauranga Boys’ College. I look forward to
sharing their successes with you in my next newsletter. Best wishes
to all boys involved: Teams involved in Tournament Week:
NZ Secondary Schools (NZSS ) Volleyball Championships at
Palmerston North: Our Senior A and Senior B Teams will compete in
the NZSS Championships. The Senior A Team, after winning the NZ
Super 8 Schools Title, were runners up to Western Heights High
School in the Bay of Plenty Championships; a competition that
usually produces the NZSS Champions. Last year the team were
placed 5th, after being beaten by the eventual finalist, a team from
Australia. The Senior B team have qualified in the Top 32 giving
them a chance to make Division 1. They have a very tough Pool
which includes the TBC Senior A Team.
Water Polo
NZSS Water Polo Championships at Auckland:
The Senior A Team of Tom Scott, Ross Baldry, Daniel Reyland,
Daniel Courtis, Adam McKenzie, Jack Preston, Patrick Bertenshaw
(c), Benji Rowe, Mitchell Hooker will travel to Auckland to compete in
these championships. The team is Coached by old boy Mitchell
Gregory. The team is entered into Division 2 for this year as they are
a relatively young team and are looking to build towards Div 1 and
the top spot in two years to come. That said, the boys have been
coming together well as a team in the local competition so they are
confident of a good showing. The team compete at a number of
venues depending on the draw and how they perform in their pool but
they start out at West Wave Aquatic centre in Henderson, West
Auckland.
Golf
BOP Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Rotorua
The Golf Team head to Springfield Golf Club in Rotorua on Monday
to compete in the BOP Schools Championships. The winning team
only will qualify for the National Championships, held at Wellington
later in the year. Our top team consists of: Kingsley Wright, Byron
Willis, Matthew Fairweather and Ethan Larsen.
Rowing
NZSS Rowing Championships at Twizel
Two weeks ago we took the TBC Rowing squad over to Lake
Karapiro to compete in the North Island Secondary School
Championship. The boys competed very well with 24 out of the 26
rowers getting into an A Final. We are about to send a team of
athletes to the small South Island town of Twizel this weekend. Twizel
will play host to the largest school sports event in the Southern
Hemisphere – the prestigious Maadi Cup. This is an annual event
held at Lake Ruataniwha that caters to all Secondary School age
groups that the school has to offer. The event saw more than 2100
athletes from 125 secondary schools participating in 2015. The top
prizes offered at the regatta are the Maadi Cup, Springbok Shield,
Levin Jubilee Cup, Dawn Cup and the Star Trophy. Tauranga Boys’
College has a strong history in competing at these events. It is only
one of 14 schools to ever win the Maadi Cup since the regatta began
in 1947. TBC has won this event 6 times.

North Island Secondary Schools' (NISS) Sailing Regatta at Taupo.
Team:
Tom Maidment (Captain), Luke Gulliver, Jack
Revington(Skipper), Max Faulkner, Harry Bailey (Skipper), Jack
Towers, Reserves:Ollie Howes, Jack Buckley. This is a very young
new team: they have great predecessors that each and everyone of
them can use as fantastic role models and aspire to do as well as
they have.

Sailing
Northern Districts Cricket Gillette Cup at Hamilton.
Our Cricket 1st XI will be traveling to Hamilton for the Northern
Districts qualifying tournament for the NZSS finals which will be held
in December.
The team will play Hillcrest High, St. Peter's School
and then Hamilton Boys' High. If we win the pool we play in the final
on Thursday. All games will be tough and keenly contested. The aim
is to win the tournament and qualify for the finals. Recent wins over
Westlake Boys' High and Kelston Boys' High have the team in good
spirits ahead of the games next week
Softball
NISS Softball Tournament at Papakura
The TBC Softball Team will be competing in the Division 2 NZSS
Softball Championships in Papakura. The venue is Prince Edward
Park. There are 9 schools competing and our biggest opposition has
to be Hamilton Boys' High. Gisborne Boys' High are always heavy
hitters as well. Our strength is definitely in our pitching combination
of Cody Tanner and Connor McLeod. Campbell Harrison broke his
foot during school athletics day, but had his moon boot removed just
in time to join the team again. Our goal is to win the tournament, and
we stand a good chance.
Waka Ama
NZSS Waka Ama Championships at Rotorua
A team of 8 are competing at the Te Wananga o Aotearoa National
Secondary Schools Waka Ama Championships at Tikitapu (Blue
Lake) in Rotorua from 5th to 8th April. The team consists of mainly
J16 paddlers who will compete in both the 250m and 500m events.
Captain, Isaac Dickson, will steer the crew and compete in the W1
races on Tuesday.
Athletics
NISS Athletic Championships at Auckland
Ten athletes from TBC travel to Auckland to represent the Waikato/
BOP Region in the NISS Championships. All these athletes have
qualified by being place-getters at the recent Waikato/BOP
Secondary Schools Championships held at Porritt Stadium. Ethan
Holman who won the 100m and 200m title at the Waikato/BOP
Championships is best performed of the athletes.
Sevens
NISS Sevens Tournament at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui.
Next week the Under 15 Sevens team will be heading to the North
Island Sevens Champs. It will be held at Blake Park over in the
Mount. Over the last couple of years the team has constantly placed
in the top 8 with some top 4 finishes. The goal as always is to come
away with the winners trophy and not be participators at the event.
After losing in the final at the Gordon Teitjens Sevens Tourny earlier
in the year the boys are eager to right the result and come out
winners this time. Some players to watch are Taratu Mankelow, Noah
Walker and Kingston Langilangi who will be pushing to get a place in
the Tournament team.

the group. Tauranga College split to become TBC &
TGC in 1958 !!!
