Binding 34” square each of Batting and Backing fabrics Other Stuff: Thread Heavy weight see-through template plastic Permanent Felt Tipped Marker Scissors to cut template plastic Masking Tape (roll up with sticky side out and put on the bottom of templates when cutting) Rotary cutter (28mm) and mat Longer see through ruler for cutting strips 2 © 2012 by Cara Gulati for Doodle Press PO Box 6640, San Rafael, CA 94903 DoodlePress.com Cara@DoodlePress.com Directions Cutting: Stripe: Cut 4 strips @ 3”wide X WOF (Width Of Fabric) for the borders. Your stripe direction should be going the short direction. Set aside. Cut 16 “B” template shapes, all right side up with the fabric right side up. Line up the arrow marking with the direction of the stripe. Light Purple: Cut 4 strips @ 1½” wide X WOF. Set aside. Dark Purple: Cut 32 “A” template shapes all right side up with the fabric right side up. Sewing: All seams are ¼”. Sew two purple “A” pieces to one stripe “B” piece using the Curved Seam Piecing technique I demonstrated on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Timms, show #1105. Press your seams either direction. Repeat with the other 15 sets to create a total of 16 blocks. In a perfect world, your blocks will be 6½”. Following the illustration below, sew 4 blocks into 4 rows. Press all straight seams to the right. 3 © 2012 by Cara Gulati for Doodle Press PO Box 6640, San Rafael, CA 94903 DoodlePress.com Cara@DoodlePress.com Flip rows 2 and 4 around. Sew the rows to each other. 1 2 3 4 Borders: Light Purple borders: Measure your quilt top from side to side at the top, the middle and the bottom. (It’s square, and it does not matter which way you turn it, it will look the same.) Take an average of that measurement, and cut two of your strips to that length. Sew them on to the sides. 4 © 2012 by Cara Gulati for Doodle Press PO Box 6640, San Rafael, CA 94903 DoodlePress.com Cara@DoodlePress.com Turn your top so that the purple borders are on the top and bottom. Repeat the previous instructions and sew on the last two strips. Striped borders: Measure your quilt top from side to side at the top, the middle and the bottom. (It’s square, and it does not matter which way you turn it, it will look the same.) Take an average of that measurement and add 2” to the number. (In a perfect world your top would measure 26½” + 2” = 28½”.) Cut all four of the border strips to your actual quilt top measurement +2”. “Partial Seam” borders construction: Following the diagram below, sew the last few inches of the border piece on to the right end of the top, lining up the straight edges. Press the seam towards the stripe. 5 © 2012 by Cara Gulati for Doodle Press PO Box 6640, San Rafael, CA 94903 DoodlePress.com Cara@DoodlePress.com Turn your top one-quarter turn to the left. Your next border will sew on completely from top to bottom. Repeat this for the next two borders. 6 © 2012 by Cara Gulati for Doodle Press PO Box 6640, San Rafael, CA 94903 DoodlePress.com Cara@DoodlePress.com When you get back to the first border, sew the rest of the seam, completing the “partial seam”. Quilt as desired. Binding: During the show I demonstrated a binding by machine technique that I like to teach. You can use it here if you like! I hope you enjoyed this pattern. I would love to put up a photo of your finished project on my web site. Please send the photograph to my email address below.
