Rewarding American breeders and competitors campaigning domestically-bred Hanoverians in dressage!

hree awards totaling $6,000 will be presented to eligible
American-bred Hanoverians competing in the Young
Dressage Horse classes at Dressage at Devon (DAD),
Devon, PA, September 23-28, 2014. The intent is to promote
American breeders by encouraging competitors to buy and
campaign domestically-bred Hanoverians in dressage. Dressage
at Devon is an excellent showcase for American-bred dressage
horses, as it is the largest show of its kind in the United States
and attracts the country’s top horses in both the breeding and
performance divisions.
To be eligible for the All-American Hanoverian Young Dressage
Horse Awards, a horse must be American-bred and -owned, which
the donors have defined as conceived and foaled in this country. The
horse must have been issued AHS registration papers. The donors
have stipulated that the sire of an eligible horse must be either an
AHS Elite Stallion or a stallion standing in Germany but owned by an
AHS member. The horse must be in the ribbons in its respective class
at Dressage at Devon but its owner need not be a member of the AHS.
$2,000 will be awarded to the highest-placing horse in each of the
three classes and the money will be split between owner and breeder.
In 2014, the Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders Club (MAHB) will also offer the MAHB-BRED AWARDS of $500 each to the highest-placed MAHB-bred
Hanoverian in the Young Horse division and the Mature Horse division of the DAD in-hand open breeding classes. Eligible horses must have been bred by
a member of MAHB at time of registration. Money to be split between owner and breeder. Owner need not be a member of MAHB.

did a fantastic job organizing a very informative and
fun meeting. She made Dr. Wilkens
dance the Do-Si-Do ten years ago
and this year Dr. Christmann ride a
Longhorn steer. Even though the
crazy weather kept many at home, a
superb group of breeders enjoyed
every minute of the Houston meeting that was filled with equine lectures, informative discussions and
great chocolates.
Ludwig Christmann was at his best
and shared valuable updates and
statistics with the board and the
membership as well as how to use
breed values when trying to make a
match. The board had a very productive meeting and approved several great proposals, the following
are two rules changes and will have
to be voted on by the membership:
Following the Verband’s change in
naming their SPS mares now
Hanoverian Premium mares our
board has decided that going forward to name our current Elite
Mares - Hanoverian Premium mares.
The motivation is to achieve international consistency for the
Hanoverian breed.
The board approved a new option
for young dressage stallions in the
USA to attain approval using the 30Day Test in the USA along with
required scores at specific shows. It
is nice to have another approval
option besides the existing 70-Day
Test or higher performance requirements.
During the annual AHS board meeting the members got together with
Director Hugh Bellis-Jones and
Sandy Clevenger (AHS office) as
well as Natalie DiBerardinis from
the inspection review committee for
a discussion regarding office procedures. We discussed details of how


certain actions are integrated and
impact the office and went over a
wide ranging prepared proposal.
The AHS board decided in favor of
procedural changes and they are
now in effect. These changes are
designed to improve efficiency and
speed up transfers, recordings,
accommodating quicker returns
from the office as well as improve
document security by eliminating
the handling of originals in almost
all cases. Details on some of the procedural changes were emailed to the
members and can be seen on page 11.
A benefit from some of the procedural changes is that we need less
storage so we also accomplished an
office space reduction. The AHS
office personnel and Cindy (Hugh’s
wife) have worked hard since returning from Houston getting rid of
thousands of pounds of paper files
from about 25 file cabinets. Cindy
has sold all of the no longer needed
file cabinets and some furniture.
This space reduction results in a savings to the AHS of about $1000 per
month in rent starting this month.
We are very happy to accomplish
this while being able to stay in our
same office at the Kentucky Horse
Park.
Our registrar Sandy Clevenger is
working her way out of the back-log
of foal registrations but is already
noticing the difference from the
more efficient way she can do transfers and recordings now. After and
during this year’s tour it will be easier to keep up with the work load!
Even though it is required after
mares are inspected, quite a few
mare owners have not sent in their
papers for score and stud book status update. The office does not need
to wait anymore for those papers but
can now send the parchment paper
score certificate along with a status
update label to the owners.
The board has changed the way AHS
annual meetings are organized. We
will have a standing AHS committee
to organize it with the help from the
office rather than changing the
entire committee every year. The
board has approved two rotating
destinations: next year’s meeting, to
be held during the first week in
February, will be in Las Vegas at the
South Point equestrian hotel while
the 2016 meeting will be held in
West Palm Beach in conjunction
with the Wellington horse show.
South Point, a new equestrian hotel
and facility is located 5 miles from
the Las Vegas strip with a great stadium arena that seats 4600 and with
air-conditioned stabling for 1500
horses under the hotel.
The meeting will be built around an
existing horsemanship clinic – “legacy of legends” organized by the
Branamans. This year they were
starting colts in the mornings and
had a young horse jumping clinic
with Melanie Smith in the afternoons. The arena activity can be
seen live in your rooms on big screen
tv or the arena is only a three minutes walk from your room. There
will be equine-themed vendors.
You will find the cost to be very reasonable for the hotel and Las Vegas is
an easy flight from anywhere. The
hotel is only five minutes from the
airport and has a free shuttle as well
as one that goes to the strip. The
strip has lots of spectacles to be seen4
in and around the casino hotels; the
musical fountains at the Bellagio or an
erupting Volcano or pirates and ships
fighting at Treasure Island. Go from
New York to the top of the Eiffel Tower
in Paris or a romantic boat ride
through the canals of Venice while
being serenaded. Enjoy a Gelato or
Cappuccino under the Italian blue
skies in the Caesars Forums. The
weather is pleasant and the entertainment is endless; Great shows from
magic with Chris Angel to Comedy
and music stars to a mixture of all,
with seven shows by Cirque du Soleil
and 30 plus others. Visit the Hoover
Dam and the Grand Canyon in a day
after the meeting or the world’s biggest
aquarium at Mandalay Bay only 10
minutes away. I am betting you might
join us at the AHS meeting next year.
The AHS Stallion service auction has
been concluded raising almost $40,000
for the AHS and with no stallions left

DONNERKEIL (1982-2014)
Donnerkeil was bred in the United States by Dagmar
Fancher out of her imported Lukant daughter, Lucinda and
well-regarded Dürkheim son, Diamont. We will always
remember Donner as a true “all-American, all-arounder.”
He achieved many Championships in dressage, hunter/
jumpers, and 3-day eventing. His kind and willing temperament enabled him to be shown and ridden by professionals and amateurs alike. Despite suffering a severe lower leg
injury in a trailer accident requiring bone plates and screws,
he went on to a complete recovery, competing again in
eventing for over five years. He was fully approved by the
AHS based on his performance record prior to the inception of the U.S. 100-Day Test.
Donnerkeil was purchased by Bridlewood Farm, Ky., in
1996 where he stood as a highly successful sire for 17 years.
He has 151 AHS registered offspring and was especially
sought after as a superior selection for crossing with
Thoroughbred mares adding his strength of conformation,
quality gaits and generous temperament. His offspring are
well known for their versatility, excelling in dressage, jumping, eventing and driving.
We are proud to have stood this wonderful stallion whose
intelligence and unflappable personality never failed to
endear him to those met him. He represented the
Hanoverian breed at many Equine Affaire expositions and
was always a crowd favorite.
One of his successful performance daughters, EM Denali
HG, out of our foundation mare Auf Wiedersehen (Adios
III), is also one of Bridlewood Farm’s proven broodmares,
passing on Donnerkeil’s best qualities to her foals.
At age 32, Donnerkeil was humanely euthanized surrounded
by many of his friends. “You touched all of us with your character, athleticism and willingness to please. You clearly stamped
all of your offspring in such a way that your spirit will never be
forgotten.” You will be missed. n

Hanoverians, NZ. “Our Dacaprio filly won New Zealand Young Dressage Horse. She won her 4-year-old class then went on to compete against the 5- and 6-year-old Champions and won overall! She is a stunning filly and has been Reserve Champion in Level One at
the North Island Championships,” says Matthews.
Decadance MH won Supreme Champion at the large Horse of Year Show in the Purpose Bred Sport Horse classes. She won the
Purpose Bred Mare class for all ages, the ridden 4-year for Dressage, then overall Young Stock, and went on to Supreme overall under
judge Emmy de Ju from Holland. The elegant 4-year-old chestnut mare was also Reserve Champion in the Level One Dressage at the
Horse of the Year Show.

Important Changes to AHS Office Procedures
The AHS is implementing several
changes to office procedures, effective immediately, which will result in
increased efficiency in processing
paperwork for the membership.
Transfer of Ownership: Members will
no longer be required to submit
their horse’s original registration
papers/passports when requesting a
transfer of ownership. Instead, the
member will be required to send a
photocopy of the papers along with
the transfer of ownership form or
bill of sale and the appropriate fee.
The change of ownership will be
recorded in the AHS database, and a
sticker, stamped and signed by the
AHS, will be sent with instructions
for the owner to affix onto the original papers. This will allow members to process their paperwork
online if they choose by scanning
and attaching their horse’s papers
and paying with a credit card.
Members are still welcome to continue mailing paperwork to the AHS
office.
In the case of German-papered
horses that have been issued a passport, a photocopy of the Certificate
of Ownership will suffice, or alternatively the member will need to include
photocopies of the front cover and
pages 2-3 from the passport.
Recording a German-papered Horse:
Recording is the process by which a
German-papered horse is first
entered into the AHS database.
Members will no longer be required
to submit their horse’s original
Hanoverian Verband passport when
requesting a recording. Instead, the
member will be required to send a
photocopy of the following pages
from the passport: front cover;
pages 2-3; pages 4-5; page 13; and
page 15. The recording will be
entered into the AHS database, and
stickers, stamped and signed by the
AHS, will be sent with instructions
for the owner to affix onto the original passport. This will allow members to process their paperwork
online if they choose by scanning
and attaching their horse’s passport

Frozen Semen Insemination Form: This
form will no longer be required for
registering foals conceived using frozen semen as the AHS verifies the

Inspection Tour Entries: Forms will be
developed and posted on the AHS
website for members to enroll mares,
foals, and Futurity entries for AHS
inspection sites.
Mare Inspection Entries: In 2014,
members will not be required to
submit original mare registration
papers to the office. Photocopies (as

those mares that pass inspection
and/or the MPT, stickers, stamped
and signed by the AHS, will be sent
with instructions for the owner to
affix onto the original papers. These
stickers will be accompanied by the

members will be able to submit the
forms directly from the AHS website. All foal registration paperwork,
with the exception of the markings
page, may be submitted online,
including foal photographs.
The AHS board and central office
staff are implementing these changes in order to expedite the processing of paperwork for the membership. This will help ensure the safety
of registration papers as originals
will no longer be mailed to the central office. We realize your time is
valuable and our goal is to assist you
in the most efficient way possible.

the 2014 inspection tour. Passed.
Inspection Tour Planning Committee Chair Natalie DiBerardinis and AHS Registrar Sandy Clevenger were invited to
join the Board discussion on the 2013 tour and the office’s
procedures for processing tour-related paperwork.
In order to provide more timely service to the membership,
Edgar Schutte stated that he and Mr. Bellis-Jones and Ms.
Clevenger proposed a number of new procedures for handling tour entries, producing foal papers, processing transfers of ownership, and recordings of imported Hanoverians.
It was proposed that in order to process future transfers of
ownership and recordings, and to enter mares into the breeding program, members would no longer be required to submit original papers/passports to the central office. The AHS
would no longer create and maintain physical individual
files for each horse in the AHS program but would, effective
2014, maintain all relevant records solely on the AHS database. Procedures would be developed for members to submit
foal registrations online, including photographs. The Board
approved these proposals.
The Board discussed current AHS office space requirements
at the National Horse Center. Hugh Bellis-Jones had fully discussed this topic with the Kentucky Horse Park. Motion to reduce the AHS’s office requirements at the National
Horse Center. Passed.
2012/2013 Treasurer’s Report: Vanessa Carlson reported that
the society continues to operate in a challenging financial climate; the Finance Committee will be very vigilant regarding
expenditures this year. The AHS had reverted to the calendar
year as the financial year. This will permit better tracking of
income and expenses and also means that the next audit will
cover 15 months, October 2013 through December 2014.
Meg Williams reported for the Mare and Stallion Committee. Suzanne Quarles had been elected as 2014 Committee
Chair. Yesterday, the Thoroughbred stallion Sea Accounts xx
(Sea Hero xx/Private Accounts xx) had been fully licensed
by the AHS and Hanoverian Verband. The Committee will
undertake a statistical study of possible future requirements
for Elite Mare status as it pertains to the American mare base.
The Committee will work with the Verband on a proposal
for approving young Hanoverian (4, 5- and 6-year-olds)
stallions through successful completion of the 30-Day Test
followed by attainment of required scores in the Markel
Championships for young dressage horses and in the finals
at Lamplight. The final wording of this proposal will be incorporated into the breeding rules referendum vote that will
take place this fall.
Dr. Christmann explained that the States Premium title will
no longer be awarded to Hanoverian mares in Germany and
will instead be replaced by the title “Hanoverian Premium
Mare.” The Verband recommended that due to the reciproci-4

7.0. The Hanoverian and Rheinland Verbands will eventually merge their operations, although two separate studbooks
will be maintained. 2014 had been a good year regarding
joint promotion and marketing between the AHS and HV.
At this time Edgar Schutte led a discussion on the location of
future annual meetings. He proposed that the 2015 meeting
should be held at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center
in Las Vegas, February 6-8, 2015.
The Board next discussed the status of revisions to the AHS’s
Rules of Registration. Rick Toering, Chair of the Corporate
Regulations and Grievances Committee, stated that a fully revised and updated version of the AHS’s breeding rules
would be sent to the committee for review in early March.

discussion and possible approval and then sent to the Ver-

Vet Mobility Act Reported out of
House Energy & Commerce Committee
The House Energy & Commerce Committee reported the
Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act (H.R. 1528) out of
Committee on April 3, 2014. The bill is sponsored by
Representatives Kurt Schrader of Oregon and Ted Yoho of
Florida, both of whom are veterinarians.

Senate passed its version of the Veterinary Medicine Mobility

The Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act amends the Controlled
Substances Act (CSA) to clarify that veterinarians are allowed
to transport, administer and dispense controlled substances
and medications outside of their registered offices and hospitals. It would ensure equine veterinarians have the ability
to provide mobile or ambulatory services in the field to the
horse community as they traditionally have.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) changed its
interpretation of provisions of the CSA regarding what veterinarians may carry with them and has stated it now
believes it is illegal for veterinarians to transport controlled
substances and medications for use outside of their registered locations, such as an animal hospital.
But equine veterinarians often provide mobile services and
treat horses at farms, training facilities, horse shows, or racetracks. In many cases it is not possible for owners to bring
their horses to a clinic or hospital. For this reason, veterinarians have for years carried any medications they may need

opportunities for everyone at AHS Inspections
by natalie diberardinis, chairman, 2014 inspection tour planning committee
W
hile the focus for many of our members is on
foaling and breeding season right now, it’s not
too early to begin making plans for the 2014
Inspection Tour. This year the AHS will be offering over
20 inspection sites around the country. These inspections offer valuable opportunities not just for breeders,
but also for riders, trainers, and those considering purchasing a foal or breeding in the future.
With commentary given by AHS judges on each horse
presented, one learns more about the conformation,
movement, and jumping ability that form the foundation
for a talented sport horse prospect. Inspections offer a
wonderful venue to see possible foals for sale and hear an
experienced professional’s free evaluation. It is also the
first opportunity to see how the foals may react to a show
environment.
Breeders enjoy the opportunity to see several foals and
mares by a variety of stallions and will better learn what
qualities particular lines may throw. Comments and
scores from inspections will assist breeders in evaluating
not only their individual horses, but also their breeding
program as a whole. Inspections can be a great place to
get sale pictures and videos as well. The horses are clean,
braided, and being in that environment hopefully gives
them that little spark of expression.
We encourage all owners of Hanoverian registered mares,
or non-Hanoverian mares that are eligible by pedigree, to
present their mares early in their careers. Even if you
plan on competing and not necessarily breeding your
mare immediately, presenting her at an inspection will
add to your mare’s value and ensure her the best presentation possible. Older mares or those that are presented
after an injury can be at a disadvantage when evaluating
the quality and correctness of their movement.
The Mare Performance Test offers the opportunity for
further evaluation of the mares and their quality for
sport. It is also a critical component in the qualification
for the Elite Mare/Hanoverian Premium Mare title. It’s
not commonly known, but geldings are eligible to take
the Performance Test as well and this can be a great outing for your young riding horse to gain more experience
in a show type environment.
Do you have a yearling or 2-year-old Hanoverian youngster? Consider presenting them at an AHS Futurity. Held
at each inspection around the country, horses receive
scores and comments on categories similar to a USDF
Breed Show or a USEA Future Event Horse competition.


Important Changes
for Inspection Enrollment in 2014:
We’ve taking advantage of technology improvements! The
AHS office has come up with several changes in procedures
to simplify the process of enrolling for inspections, as well
as to speed up the time within which they can return score
sheets and foal papers.
• Updated forms will be posted this spring allowing for online submission of inspection enrollment.
• Members will no longer be required to submit original mare registration papers to the office.
Photocopies will suffice. For those mares that pass inspection and/or the MPT, stickers, stamped and signed by the AHS, will be sent with instructions for
the owner to affix onto the original papers. These
stickers will be accompanied by the mare’s scores printed on parchment certificates.
• All foal registration paperwork, with the exception of the markings page, may be submitted online,
including foal photographs.
2014 AHS Annual Inspection Tour Deadline dates
The deadlines for mare, foal and futurity entries without penalty are as follows:

registration certificate of every mare enrolled for inspection must be submitted with the enrollment form. Entries
that lack this documentation may be delayed. The owner
of any non-Hanoverian warmblood mare enrolled for an
AHS inspection must submit a copy of the mare’s registration papers to the Central Office for pre-approval. If

with any inspection inquiries you may have.

HulaGirl and Mackenzie Weller - A Winning Team

Reo Foxpaw (aka HulaGirl) and
17-year-old Mackenzie Weller of
Elberta, Ala., topped off their 2013
show season qualifying for the distinguished 2013 ASPCA Maclay
National Championship with a
stellar, flawless first round. The
Maclay Championships were held in
November in Lexington, Ky.
American Hanoverian Society, as
well. We all know what it takes to
keep a senior horse athletic, sound
and competing, not to mention the
effects it has on all parties involved,
family, friends, barn help, rider,
owner, (pocketbook) and the list
goes on! I simply can’t stress this
enough.
The pair competed in 2013 in Large
Junior Hunter, accumulating 360
points, as well as in Performance
Working Hunter, 3’6”, earning 225
points. They also competed in the
popular up-and-coming USHJA
National Hunter Derbys.
Reo Foxpaw is a 1998 bay Hanoverian
mare (Rio Grande-Epeppermint/
Eminenz) and was bred by Mary
Pawlak of Foxpaw Farm, Newnan,
Ga. Mary called her “Julie.”
“I expected nothing less from this
16-year-old mare and young rider
combination,” said owner Kimberly
Walstad.
In 2012, HulaGirl was Large Junior
Hunter Champion with the

shipped out by Brooke Ledge from
Lexington to Branscomb Farms in
Half Moon Bay, Calif., to be back
with her owner and supposedly to
retire!

owner/staff/trainers at Branscomb
Farm (and of course all of
Mackenzie’s hard work), HulaGirl is
going stronger than ever, sound in
mind and body, fit as a fiddle, and
we are back at jumping and First
Level dressage, and, most importantly, (a bucket list for me) riding
on the California coast!

16-year-old mare loves her job, gives
you nothing but 100-plus effort and
dedication, and I see nothing but
more competition in the future!”
Mackenize has moved on with
another very talented jumper, Spider,
in addition to training HulaGirl’s
one and only offspring, now 6 years
of age, a redheaded chestnut mare,
“Maui,” with jumper stamped all
over her.

The AHS Welcomes Sea Accounts xx to the 2014 AHS Elite Stallion Roster
T
AHS is pleased to announce that a new
stallion has been added to the AHS Elite stallion
roster for 2014.

He is the only Thoroughbred in North
America to successfully complete the
100-Day Stallion Test scoring 90.19.
Since then he has competed at Fourth
Level dressage (recently scoring a
62.75% on 4th-3) and has multiple wins
at Preliminary eventing. In 2013, he
had two Top-5 finishes at Intermediate
and is qualified for the 2014 AECs at
Intermediate. Plans for 2014 include
the Region 9 Fourth Level Dressage
Championships and making his Prix St.
George debut with Patrick Tompkins of
Aptitude Dressage while continuing his
eventing career with Ellen Doughty of Pegasus Eventing.

Show on March 14-16, 2014, at the
Murieta Equestrian Center in
Rancho Murieta, Calif. This was
only the third show at Third Level
for Sandy Savage’s mare Relevé
(Rotspon-Welteje/Welt Klasse), and
she earned scores of 75.132% at
Third Level test 1 and 75.641% at
Third Level test 3.
“She’s got a fantastic work ethic,”
said Savage, of Sacramento, Calif.
“She’s a very, very sensitive horse.
She’s very fluid, very elastic. She’s
just lovely. She’s really soft in the
back– riding her is like getting a
massage.”
“One thing that’s holding us back is
the flying changes, one in particular.
We’ve got one good one and one
rather explosive one,” laughed
Savage. “She’s just really tense about
it and a little bit apprehensive. I just
have to be patient and not push her
too hard with it.”
“But she’s got a really fantastic piaffe!
She loves it. I could literally work her
in piaffe all day long if I wanted to,
which I don’t, of course. She’s
picked it up just beautifully and it’s
really spectacular.”
“The lateral work is super easy
because she’s so sensitive,” continued Savage. “I think that’s kind of
the thing that makes it difficult in
the changes is because she can go
sideways really fast and really easy.
It makes it hard to pin her down
and keep her straight and going in
one direction,” she laughed. “She’s
a lot of fun to ride. She’s like driving a very, very nice sports car–
she’s the Ferrari of horses.”
Savage purchased Relevé three
years ago at age seven from her
breeder Laura Ritter, Sportin Horse
LLC, Alamo, Calif. Relevé has had
one foal, Sashay, a 2008 Black
Hanoverian mare by Sinatra Song,
who was the champion at her
inspection. Relevé was started
under saddle at age five and had
been ridden only lightly when
Savage purchased her.
Savage is planning to move Relevé
up to Fourth Level as soon as they
get one more qualifying score at
Third Level. Every score they’ve
received so far at Third
Level has been over
72%. Relevé has good
working pirouettes and
her half passes.

Black through Second Level. The
9-year-old gelding has had some
down time since Lamb last showed
him in the fall of 2011, and Hill
started riding him in September of
last year.
“I just moved him up to Third Level
and all of the movements have come
really easy to him,” said Hill. “Right
now it’s all about building fitness
and strength training, working on
his suppleness and getting his body
fit. He’s a really sensitive but intelligent horse. He’s super off the leg and
seat. He has a nice connection in the
bridle as well. He’s a great horse.”
“Maureen’s done a nice job on all of
the basics with him,” continued Hill.
“He just needs to get his body back
in shape. He’s so smart he stays with
me, we’ve really bonded in the last
six months.”
Rubin Black was second to Savage
and Relevé in Third Level 1 with a
70.658% and Third Level test 3 with
a 71.667%. He won Sunday’s Third
Level test 3 class with a 71.218%.
“He was fantastic at the show,” said
Hill. “I couldn’t have been happier
with him. I had no idea what it was
going to be like going in (to the ring)
with a horse that you’ve never shown
before. I was pleasantly surprised
with him. He was a little nervous
when people moved around in the
bleachers but that didn’t occur too
much. I found him to be very brave
and he did a great job.”
“I’m very lucky to be able to ride
him and to work with Maureen and
her horses. She’s a super, super lady,”
said Hill.
Lamb showed her 14-year-old
Hanoverian gelding Ritello, (Rotspon-Plantine/Pik Koenig),
on Sunday in their first Intermediaire I, with a score of
65.0%. They won their Prix St. George class on Saturday
with a 65.132%.
Jennifer Kallam brought new Hanoverian gelding Gunner to
Murieta for his second dressage show. Kallam, of Menlo
Park, Calif., trains hunters and jumpers along with dressage
horses. She was on a buying trip to Canada looking for hunter/jumper resale prospects when she saw Gunner at von
Platen Farms in Camrose, Alberta.

This was the first show of the year for Jaki Hardy of Santa
Rosa, Calif., and her 15-year-old Hanoverian mare Finesse.
They competed in the open Intermediate I classes, placing
second on Friday with a 66.316% and third on Saturday with
a 65.395%. Finesse (Filigrant-Amara/Acapulco) was bred by
Peter Voss. n
“He’s my dream horse. I fell in love with him the moment he
walked into the arena!” exclaimed Kallam. “Instead of buying a resale investment horse I came home with a bloody hot
dressage horse that I’ll probably never sell! He’s going to be
my horse forever. He’s the coolest horse I’ve ever worked
with. I think he’s going to be a champion, but we’re just trying to survive our horse shows right now.”
Kallam purchased Gunner (Graf Top/Warkanson/Goodwill)
in December, 2013. The breeders, von Platen Farms had
wanted to keep him as a stallion, but gelded him at age four
because they thought he was going to be too small. He’s
16.0+ hands now, at 7-years-old.
Kallam took him to a one-day dressage show at Yarra Yarra
Dressage in Pleasanton, Calif., in January and he wouldn’t
eat or drink. So she decided he needed some travel and show
miles and started taking him along to the hunter shows. So
now he’s been to Rancho Murieta for the winter hunter/
jumper shows and made the trip south to the big Thermal
hunter/jumper show with his barn mates. She was going to
jump him around in the 2’6” ticketed rounds at Thermal,
but decided he wasn’t ready to go into the show ring then.
“He’s extremely hot but he’s not crazy,” said Kallam. “He’s
very sensible. He’s just very sensitive to ride and he’s very
easily startled by the rider because he’s so sensitive. He’s very
reactive.”

“He takes a lot of time. I spend as much time as I possibly
can with him. His previous owners did lots of trail riding
with him and gave him lots of exposure, lots of experiences.
He’s got no baggage. Now he’s ready to start performing a
little bit. He’s such an athletic guy.”
Gunner did much better at Murieta than at his debut at
Yarra Yarra. He won his First Level test 1 class on Friday with
a 68.793%. He also received a 65.345% at First Level test 1,
and scores of 64.00% and 63.8% in Training Level test 3. He
received 8’s on his gaits but comments on his tenseness and
that he needed to be more supple in his back.

laughed Kallam. “I can see that he’s going to be worth every
moment when he figures it out. He gives 150% every ride
and that’s too much effort for what we’re doing right now. It

22nd Annual AHS Stallion Service Auction Recap

The 2014 AHS Stallion Service Auction concluded with
tremendous success! This year’s auction had a new look,
new format, and an unprecedented reach of increased
stallion exposure, that led to a frenzy of bidding.
The format allowed for six photos of each stallion,
YouTube links, information about the stallion and pedigree to be viewed for each stallion, providing yet another
great marketing tool for each stallion.
Fifty-four stallion services in 42 lots were donated and
available for bidding. In the end a total of $40,575.00 was
raised. Several stallion owners offered a choice of multiple
stallions, with options for both fresh and frozen semen.

com, the central office, and most of all to the generous
donations of participating stallion owners, who together
made this annual fund raiser tremendously successful.
This money is used to promote the American Hanoverian
Society, as well as our extensive awards program.
One of our goals was to provide more promotion to the
stallion owners for their stallions and their programs than
they could get from any other auction donation they could
make. A professionally managed, full featured internet
auction site produced by the industry’s most experienced
show horse auction manager. Tim Jennings, and
Sporthorseauctions.com was selected to vastly increase
exposure and promotion. This provided for an email
campaign to over 9,000 sporthorse enthusiasts we had not
reached out to in the past. Also, in “staying up with the
times” Sporthorse Auctions Facebook posts reached 28,545
viewers!
The online auction bidders ranged from 30 different
states, four Canadian provinces and a bidder from France.
Stallion owners mentioned that many bidders were people
they had not had contact with previously and were happy
with the expanded exposure.
Stallion Auction Coordinator Nancy Connolly has been a member of
the American Hanoverian Society for 16 years, and is a member of the
Fund Raising Committee as well as the Board of Directors. Nancy is
the owner of HorsePower Farm in Vancouver, Wash., and has been
raising horses for over 40 years.
AHS Young Breeders Club
Stallion listings were available for “preview only” for the
first week, with active bidding following for two weeks,
From February 1st thru the 14th. Things were typically
pretty quiet until the last two days of bidding, when things
truly heated up.
By auction close, a total of eighteen stallions had bids
exceeding $10,00.00, a first for our auction. The top bid of
the auction was for Sharon Hardy’s stallion Lagoheider,
going for $1,700.00! Tying for second place with bids of
$1,625.00 were Regazzoni, Hampton, and the lot of Furst
Impression/Sinatra Song. Other very popular stallions
were Devon Heir, Rapture R and San City. The average
price for a stallion bid this year rose to $1,095.00.
At the conclusion of the auction a “Second Chance” bidding opened, and for the first time all stallions offered
were sold.
This year’s professionally run on-line auction exceeded
our expectations for exposure and funds raised. The auction itself ran without a hitch and allowed all bidders to
get in on the bidding for their favorite stallions.


Houston weather in February was a welcome relief
for the AHS members attending from the northern
climates, and the atmosphere inside the Houston
Marriot Energy Corridor was even warmer as Hanoverian
enthusiasts and friends gathered for three days of continuing education, year-end awards presentations, good food
and fellowship with an exciting auction enjoyed by all.

A special ‘thank you’ to Rebecca Pennington, owner of
Sonesta Farms in Cypress, Texas, the Chair and Coordinator
for the 2014 Annual Meeting, who provided a big ‘Texas
Welcome’ to all attendees. The Planning Committee of
Sharon Garner, Doug Langer, Celia Rafalko and Hugh
Bellis-Jones provided knowledgeable speakers who covered
timely and pertinent information to help all AHS members.
The tone for the meeting was set high on Friday afternoon
by the presentations and panel discussion of pre-purchase
exams from the veterinarian, owner and buyers perspectives,
featuring Dr. Kurt Heiti, Dr. Doug Langer and Dr. Barbara
Schmidt. The take-home message was: the veterinarian is
hired to examine and inform, not to pass or fail a horse.
That decision is for the purchaser to make based on the veterinarian’s findings and level of performance expected, i.e.
performance, reproduction, etc.
A surprise was provided for everyone as we “Went a little
Western” and mounted one of the Texas Longhorn steers
found in the parking lot. This experience, with photo op,
was enjoyed by all and was sponsored by Cavalor. We welcome the AHS’s new relationship with this company.
The camaraderie continued during the Friday evening’s
cocktail reception, catered dinner and silent auction. Many
quality items were offered and enthusiastically sought, all to
benefit our organization. We thank the many donors who,
each and every year, contribute to this important society
fundraiser which this year raised in excess of $7,000. The
evening was capped by the live auction of the Lauries
Crusador xx halter, brought to the meeting by Dr. Ludwig
Christmann, from the Hanoverian Verband in Germany,
and donated by State Stud Celle. Professional auctioneer
Tim Jennings handled the sale with wit and humor, eliciting
bids from a number of individuals. Many people were
involved in the bidding, with Barb Schmidt and Meredith
Michelfelder dueling it out, while Doug Langer added a
‘quiet’ bid toward the end. Congratulations to Meredith on
her successful final bid of $2,300 for this treasured offering.
The delicious dinner was enjoyed by all before the awards
banquet began.
The award presentations were handled by Hugh BellisJones, as Cathy Tucker-Slaterbeck was unable to attend, due
to a previous commitment. With the help of his very able
assistants Dr. Barbara Schmidt and Sandy Clevenger all
awards were presented and photos taken to ensure plenty of
fantastic memories. At this time I’d like to note the generous

recognize outstanding riders, trainers and breeders of

Saturday morning began with Edgar Schutte, President of
the AHS, welcoming all attendees, and Dr. Ludwig
Christmann, of the Hanoverian Verband in Germany, providing the latest news regarding the Hanoverian horse in the
U.S. and in Germany.
Stephanie Whalen, DVM, and Chris Boutros, DVM, DVSc,
from Waller Equine Emergency Hospital, Waller, Texas,
discussed and provided a wonderful power point presentation of “What to do Until the Vet Arrives.” Some very
worthwhile ‘tips’ were provided to all and many horses will
benefit from the knowledge they shared and the handouts
provided to us.
The quality of the continuing education seminars began
right where they left off from the day before, with Jacqueline
Doval, DC, and Torey Jeanes, discussing the benefits of chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy for rehabilitating the injured horse, with the theme that these treatments
“are not alternative therapies anymore.” Proactive management by every horse owner can assure their horses are happy
and able to perform up to their genetic potential.
Jos Mottershead, PhD, from Equine-Reproduction, Inc.,
provided his very straight forward presentation on “Myths,
Methods and Modern Modes of Equine Reproduction.”
This was an excellent seminar that answered many questions, burst several myths and provided all attendees with
the ‘truths and knowledge’ to help us improve our management and skill level while improving the breeding programs
on each of our farms.
Doug Langer, DVM, MS, and Shelly Reichart, MBA, owner
and trainer of Paradigm Farms, provided enlightening
power point presentations, discussing the management,
nutrition and communication skills necessary to bring a
broodmare back under saddle and into the competition
arena.
We then traveled by bus to the Great Southwest Equestrian
Center, and enjoyed a champagne and Belgian chocolate
reception in the large Arena Club, over the Main Arena,
hosted by the AHS and Cavalor. We sipped champagne
and ate dinner, while listening to Volker Ehlers of Glenwood
Farm evaluate the horses on hand, and discussed: “How to
Select a Young Prospect for Jumping or Dressage, by evaluating their Conformation, Free Jumping, Movements

Competition, as we watched the finalists compete for the

The members then gathered in the pub at the Houston
Marriot Energy Corridor, to continue discussing what we
learned that day and enjoyed the conversations with
friends and fellow Hanoverian breeders, owners, trainers
and staff.
Sunday morning was the General Membership Meeting.

Natalie DiBerardinis – Inspection Tour Planning.
Concluding the meeting was a presentation by the very
knowledgeable Ludwig Christmann, PhD, on “Heritability
and Breeding Values” and how to use them to select a
stallion for your mare. His explanation of how to find this
information and how to implement it into your herd was
worth the trip by itself.
As the AHS annual meeting came to a close, we were
invited to next year’s meeting to be held at Michael
Gaughan’s South Point Arena and Equestrian Cente in Las
Vegas, Nev. This would be a great time and place to have all
the Hanoverian owners, breeders, trainers and riders in
attendance. As you can see, this year’s meeting was very
well organized and the seminars benefited everyone in
attendance. One more ‘bonus’ received by everyone attending, was seeing old friends and making new ones during
our three-day meeting. For those of you, who are selling
Hanoverians, please extend an invitation to the new owners
to attend next year’s meeting. Let’s personally invite all old
and new members of the American Hanoverian Society to
“Come to Where the Action Is” in February, 2015. We are
looking forward to seeing you there!
In closing I would again like to single out Annual Meeting
Chair Rebecca Pennington for her tireless efforts in making
this such a memorable event. Rebecca has every intention of
joining us in Las Vegas for next year’s event, where, in her
own words, she’ll be able to “relax and enjoy the meeting.” n
Don and his wife Dee own and operate Outer Banks Farm in Beach City,
Ohio, where they have bred Hanoverians for the past 11 years. They
have produced several top foals at AHS inspections and products of their
breeding program are now performing well in the dressage arena. In
2013 Outer Bank Farm was nationally ranked in 21st place by USEF, as
Dressage Breeders of the Year. An AHS Lifetime member, Don is the
Director of Nutrition and Technical Services for Progressive Nutrition.
He consults with industry leaders and has lectured throughout the world
to horse owners, trainers and veterinarians.

Hannoveraner Verband and State Stud Celle.
The 2014 AHS Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, was a fun-filled weekend for
all! Special thanks go to Dr. Ludwig Christmann and the State Stud Celle for
donating a halter of Lauries Crusador xx as our live auction item at this year’s AHS
Awards Banquet. After a fierce bidding war, Meredith Michelfelder of Midway
Farms in Moulton, Alabama, was announced the winner with a final bid of $2,300,
with a close second to Barbara Smith, DVM of Bridlewood Farm in Union,
Kentucky. Meredith, who is also in charge of the AHS Silent Auction, is one of the
many volunteers whose passion for the Hanoverian horse makes the AHS the

All-American Hanoverian Young Dressage Horse Finals

The All-American Hanoverian
Young Dressage Horse Awards
(AAHYDH) are entering their sixth
year. In 2008 Paul Cohen of
Associations Underwriters, Inc. and
Ziplow Horse Insurance (AUIZHI)
challenged AHS members attending
the Annual Meeting to match his
$1000 sponsorship to recognize
Hanoverians that are truly
“American-Bred.” Members eagerly
came on board donating $6,000 to
be awarded to the highest-placing
American-bred Hanoverians in the
Young Horse classes at Dressage at
Devon. Each year since, our super
members have kept the ball rolling.
To be eligible for the money, a horse
must be born and bred in this country, registered with AHS, sired by an
American-owned stallion, and out
of an American-owned mare. A
total of $6,000 will be offered each
year with $2,000 going to the highest-placed (in the ribbons) horse in
each of the Young Horse classes:
USEF 4-Year-Old Test, FEI 5-YearOld Test, and FEI 6-Year-Old Test at
Devon. The money will be split

The Dressage at Devon Highest Placing Award, also named the Bari Von Buedingen Award
is awarded to the highest placing eligible Hanoverian horse in the open breed classes. This year the award went to Duet MF
(Don Principe-EM Rotina/Rotspon) who earned the impressive high score of 80.550% in the 4-Year-Old & Older Yeld Mares
Class in the USDF DSSH Stock-in-Hand class in which she also won first place. She was handled by Brendan Curtis. The
lovely mare is owned and bred by Maryanna Haymon, N.C. This is the second year in a row that her youngsters have won
this award. Last year, David Bowie MF took home this prestigious trophy. n

by Mary Manning, was the winner
of the Bari von Buedingen Memorial
Trophy for the mare with the highest score of the year at her inspection that year. She was written about
in an article by Marion Carroll for
last year’s Awards Issue of the AHS
magazine. Well, in 2013, Furst
Daylight
outdid herself! She
achieved the highest score of all the
mares who took the Mare
Performance Test—an overall score
of 8.16—winning our EnglerFriedlaender Memorial Trophy. She
has also won the Hartwig Prize for
the 3- or 4-year-old mare that
achieves the highest combined score
for their inspection and MPT. With
her Inspection score of 7.83 and this
8.16 for her MPT, her combined


certainly making her owner/breeder
proud! Oh, by the way, this was the
first Hanoverian foal that Mary has
ever bred and presented to the AHS!
What a beginning to a breeding program! Mary had bought Amelia
Bedelia (Ahaltiner E-Tit Mouse xx/
Buffalo Lark xx), bred by Laurie
Calhoun of Maryland, from Angela
Barilar at High Point Hanoverians,
where she had been a broodmare for
several years. Mary then bred Amelia
to High Point’s Furst Impression
(Furst Heinrich-Roxana/Regazzoni).
Angela had imported him as a
youngster from Germany and had
him performance tested at Paxton
Farm in Ohio, in 2007 where he
scored quite well in both the dressage
and jumping parts of the testing.
Let’s talk a little bit about Furst
Daylight’s year. She is known as
“Sunny” to her owners and they are
understandably very proud of her.
After an injury as a foal that prevented them from trying to sell her then
and the economy slowing down as
she got older, Mary decided that
Sunny was going to be theirs forever,
so she starting planning the filly’s
career. As mentioned, she had quite
the successful trip to Sullivan Farm
for her studbook inspection in 2012.
They had thought about trying to do
her Performance Test in 2012 also,
but it just didn’t work out—perhaps
for the best. Mary herself had been
doing some resistance free and natural ground work with the filly as she
grew up, which gave Sunny a good
comfort level with being handled.
When things didn’t work out to pre-4

pare her under saddle as a 3-year- old,
Mary waited until the winter of 2013
and sent her to a natural horsemanship
trainer for six weeks. At his farm Sunny
was exposed to many things, to quote
Mary: “He was on her on the second
day after arriving. He did everything
from ring work, trails, hill work, trailer
loading, even some swimming. She
was also exposed to cows, which she
was not fond of at all. He did all of this
as resistant free as possible. He was
teaching her to respond to the lightest
cues. She was also taught how to handle herself in situations that were scary,
spooky, etc. He rode her in a rope
hackamore most of the time. She was
introduced to going in a bit the last two
weeks.”
After the six weeks, Sunny came home
for a few months of rest. Then Mary
chose a dressage trainer who was fairly
close to her home in the Trenton, N.C.
area because she trusted her and
because she preferred to go a watch the
training fairly often. It needed to be
close to home since she has two young
children and her own farm to manage.
This worked out well and the trainer
was making very good progress with
Sunny. The plan was to also do some
free jumping schooling once a week—
at Mary’s farm, once things “got in the
groove.” Unfortunately the barn where
this trainer worked, decided to close
down—really close—in mid-summer
and things fell apart. Mary brought her
mare home and worked on regrouping. Fortunately for her, Brooks Doss, a
well-known dressage rider, had just
moved back to the Raleigh-Durham
area. Brooks had experience at preparing and riding mares for their performance test and used resistant free
methods, which Mary very much preferred. So Sunny went to Brooks to
finish out her preparation. It was further from Mary’s home, so she wasn’t
able to go watch as often, but she was
very pleased with what she saw when
she could go to watch. At one point
they were considering waiting until the
inspection in October in northern
Virginia, because it was a month later,
but at the last minute, decided to go to

So they had a bit of a scare that the
performance test wasn’t going to happen in Sunny’s four-year-old year, but
the under saddle part got sorted out
and back on track. The free jumping
schooling wasn’t as well settled. Mary
herself has a background in Hunters
and Jumpers and had bought the DVD
that the Mid Atlantic Hanoverian
Breeders Club had produced about
free jumping with Scott Hassler several
years ago. Using that as her guide, she
started Sunny with poles on the ground
and then small fences. She never got to
the third element of the jump chute at
home, but the mare gained confidence
and rhythm from this early work. The
schooling through the chute while the
mare was at Brooks Doss’s farm was
not so easy. There were no jumps—no
poles—nothing! at the farm where
Brooks trained, so they had to take
Sunny to another farm nearby for the
free jumping practice once a week.
They did this for slightly over a month,
and only did it a couple of times with
the last element at 3 foot in height.
However, Sunny rose to the occasion
with her free jumping in the testing,
jumping higher than she had ever
done before and scoring 8s for both
her technique and ability—taking after
her father, Furst Impression, who had
had a very good score in his jumping at
the 100-Day Test. Her grandfather on
the dam side, Anhaltiner E (Akzent
II-SPS Pia/Pik Bube), was also a very
good jumper. He regularly schooled in
the free jumping chute for fun when he
was in dressage training with Fred
Weber in Maryland, and easily and
eagerly jumped 5 feet! So Furst
Daylight’s good jumping “gene pool”
helped her out on her MPT day!
The highlight of Sunny’s scores in the
MPT were not only the 8s she received
for her trot, canter and the jumping,
but the score of 9 for her rideability
during the testing. The judges rewarded her with this score for her willingness to work and her wonderful elasticity. That is an exceptionally high
score and the mare, the rider, and the


this small bonus are added together,
she achieved a 15.95—pretty close to
Furst Daylight’s overall score. So we
had two very special mares at the top
of the Hartwig list this year! Meg, as
her breeder and rider, explained that
Won Ruby, like most of Widmark’s
babies, was very easy to start under
saddle. She was willing to work right
from the start, and had a good brain.
The mare also really enjoyed her jumping work. Meg had bought the mother,
Davinia (Don Frederico-SPS Ravenna/
Regazzoni), at the Hanoverian
Verband’s Foal Auction several years
ago to add to her breeding program.
Won Ruby has just recently sold to a
young dressage rider in Wisconsin. She
is a graduate of the Dressage Young
Rider program having competed several times in the championships in
Kentucky. She has bought Ruby to
bring along and develop into an upper
level dressage horse. We congratulate
both Meg Williams and the new owner
of EMC Won Ruby for the outstanding
performance of this young mare in
2013 and wish her owner all the best
with the mare! n

getting the mare to her testing!
After the testing Sunny stayed with her
trainer Brooks for a few more months
and qualified for and showed in the
BLM Dressage Championships at First
Level. Quite good success considering
how short a season the mare and the
rider had together! Later in the fall the
mare came home to the Manning’s
farm for the winter. They have decided
that they would like to go ahead and
finish out her Elite Mare status, so they
are planning to breed her this year for
a foal in 2015. Congratulations to
Mary Manning and her family for
Furst Daylight’s exceptional success in
her Mare Performance Test! What an
accomplishment for Furst Daylight
and her owners—to have won three
out of the four year-end awards that
AHS offer to mares being inspected
and performance tested! As far as we
can calculate, this is the first mare to
have won this many of these awards!
Now, it will be exciting to see what she
produces when she has a foal herself!
THE HARTWIG PRIZE RESERVE
CHAMPION
We would also like to make a mention
of the Hartwig Prize Reserve Champion
Mare, EMC Won Ruby(WidmarkDivinia/Don Frederico), bred, owned,
and ridden by Meg Williams of
Oakwood Farms in Lawrenceburg,
Indiana. This filly did both her inspection and her MPT as a 3-year-old at
Meg’s inspection in October. She
scored an overall 7.5 in her inspection,
with the highlights being 8s for her
trot, walk, and overall impression.
That same day she did her MPT ending with an overall score of 8.05. She
scored exceptionally well in her rideability, her walk, and her canter garnering 8.5s for all of those. When we
determine the Hartwig Prize winners—for this purpose only (it doesn’t
really get added to any scores)—we
give any of the eligible three year olds a
.4 “bonus” for taking the MPT as a
three year old. When Ruby’s scores and

Do you remember the Oak Ridge Boys
song named “American Made”? The
refrain goes “my baby’s American
made.” This year’s winner, EMC
Landollure (Landkoenig-Fourdollar
xx/Exact Duplicate xx), is definitely
American made! To quote the owner/
breeder, Gina Gregory: “I guess our
story is a bit of a fairy tale. My dad, a
general contractor, is a big believer that
real riders breed and train their own
horses rather than buying a welltrained horse to simply compete on.
So I did just that.”
EMC Landollure, known as “Allure” to
the family, was born in 2004, but due
to Gina being in college and law school
these past few years, her training had
taken a back seat. The family decided
to take her to the inspection at Rainbow
Equus Meadows in October. Allure
had schooled over fences as high as
1.45 meters at home in 2012, but Gina
has had to focus on finishing law
school and taking the bar exam, so the
mare had had a break until August of
2013, when she began preparing for
the Inspection/MPT. At the inspection
Allure received a 7.16 for her inspection in hand, which made her a Main
Studbook mare and Elite Eligible. That
same day, she achieved an overall 7.38

The Benchmark Farm Award goes to
the mare who achieves the highest
combined free jumping score of all the
mares who take the AHS’s Mare
Performance Test in a given year. Our
anonymous donor wanted to honor
the mares that showed the highest talent for jumping each year. The winner’s name is engraved on a plaque that
goes on the base of the beautiful etched
glass trophy that resides in the AHS
office in Kentucky and also receives a
keeper plaque and ribbon. The winner
can be of any breed or age, and if there
are two (or more) mares with the same
highest combined score, there could be
multiple winners.
EMC landollure (Landkoenig-Fourdollar xx/Exact Duplicate xx) scored a 7.38 highlighted by 9’s for
jumping technique and ability. She was Champion of the Mare Performance Test at the Rainbow Equus

in her performance test, which makes
her an Elite Mare Candidate (EMC).
The highlight of her performance test,
which turned out to be the best scores
of all the mares tested this year, were
her two 9s (in both the technique and
ability) for the free jumping! With
these outstanding high scores, she won
the Benchmark Award AND qualified
for the AHS Jumper Breeding
Program—due to her scores and her
pedigree.
How the Gregorys came to have Allure
is the “American made” part. The family, of Santa Ynez, California, bought
Landollure’s mother, Fourdollar xx
(Exact Duplicate xx-Fourtydollarbra
xx/Luckylite xx) as a 4-year-old. A
youngster with only some racing training in her background, she was chosen
because Gina’s mother, Danella, had a
“hunch” about the filly being something special. They brought her home
to become Gina’s riding horse. Gina
was 11-years-old at the time. The
mare, nicknamed “Polly” turned out to
be very talented at jumping and com-
peted in the jumpers—starting with
the Children’s Jumpers and progressing to the four foot high divisions
(now known as the 1.25-1.30 meter
divisions) quite successfully. She was a
bit “on the hot side” to quote her
owner, and often won the jump-offs
because of her speed. It turns out that
Polly is closely related to a successful
Thoroughbred jumper owned and
shown by Armand Leone, named
“Encore.” Gina also progressed up the
levels in Pony Club, earning her B rating on Polly. Polly is now 22-years-old
and still enjoys being ridden.
As Gina got older, she grew fairly tall
and believed that she had outgrown
Polly, who was only 15.3 hands tall, so
she decided to breed her, to give the
mare a job and to create a future horse
to train. They chose Landkoenig
(Landadel-Luna/Landsknecht), owned
by Rainbow Equus Meadows Farm in
northern California because of his
presence, and of course, because of his
exceptional
jumping
pedigree.
Landkoenig is very well known in the

show jumping world for his own and
his progeny’s success. As a side note,
last year’s Benchmark winner, Laus
Deo, was also by Landkoenig! Since
she was an active Pony Club member,
Gina also had an interest in dressage,
thus Landkoenig was a good choice
for her Thoroughbred mare. They presented their mare, Fourdollar xx
(Polly), to the AHS at an inspection at
Silverhorne Farm in 2003, and also
performance tested her. She was the
Champion non-Hanoverian mare at
her inspection and passed her MPT
that day also, which moved her up into
the Main Studbook. The next year,
2004, Landollure was born and was
the Champion Filly at the Silverhorne
inspection.
As the filly grew up, Gina did most of
Landollure’s training herself with
some assistance and supervision from
her trainers and coaches. Allure has
shown herself to be very smart and
quick to learn. She is very attached to
Gina’s father, Matt Gregory, who
inspired the family to breed
their Thoroughbred mare
and was the first to see the
filly when she was born.
Allure did go to some
jumper shows in 2012 and
was quite successful in
1.10-1.30 meter classes.
Now that she is finished
with law school, Gina is
planning to do Amateur

her. She’s hoping to work
toward showing her in

Congratulations to the AHS All Breeds winners who were honored at the USDF Convention held in December.

This year the Bari von Buedingen
Memorial Trophy is awarded to Lady
In Red KS who is by the stallion Liberty
Gold out of Elite Mare Berlina by
Brentano II and is owned by Karan and
Tom Schwencer of Windswept
Hanoverians. Lady in Red KS received
an overall “8” and individual scores of
8’s and 9’s at her inspection.

The Bari von Buedingen Memorial
Trophy was the first of the American
Hanoverian Society’s perpetual trophies. It was donated to the AHS in
the early 1990’s in memory of noted
breeder Bari von Buedingen, who,
together with her husband Dr. Richard
von Buedingen, developed their Graf
Bae Farm broodmare band into one of
the best in the United States. This
award is given to the highest scoring
Hanoverian mare seen during the
American Hanoverian Society’s annual
inspection tour.
What advice would Karan give to other
aspiring breeders? “Pick a good mare
first, study the breed values and the
lines. Watch what Europe/Germany
lines are crossing together successfully.
Go to the AHS inspections and ask
questions. We have wonderful stallion
and mare owners that will share their
successes.” n
Karan states she was fortunate to have
met Bari in her early days of breeding.
Karan credits the input she received
from good friends and mentors Gerd
Zuther, Angela Barilar, George Walker
and the resources of the American
Hanoverian Society that helped her
achieve this award. “It’s like winning
the gold medal of breeding. This award
is especially poignant after losing
Lady’s dam Berlina last year.”

Karan proclaims Lady in Red KS is the
result of a “match made in heaven” as
both her parents were Champions of
Dressage at Devon. She followed the
adage of “breed the best to the best.”
Hilltop Farm prepared Lady in Red for
her inspection and Karan states,
“Michael Bragdell is one of the best
and did a wonderful job.” Lady is currently under saddle preparing for her
mare performance test.

Werkheiser’s newly established
equestrian community website EQ|quest
(eqquest.com), was originally conceived
by Maurine (Mo) and Jim Swanson
of Rolling Stone Farm in Slatington,
Pa., as a new year-end award for AHS
breeders and owners in 2006. The
Swansons commissioned a beautiful
painting that hangs in the AHS central
office in Lexington, Ky. Each year,
the names of the three winners are
added on small brass plates around
the frame and winners receive keepsake
trophies with a photo of the painting
at the annual meeting banquet.
“I was happy to be able to continue the
sponsorship for these awards through
EQ|quest, especially since the focus of
the site is to support breeders through
a linked network of advertising, news
and community forums,” commented
Werkheiser. “It’s crucial to recognize,
cultivate and promote the development
of these talented young Hanoverians
as they move up the levels. In 2009
at the USEF National Developing
Horse Dressage Championships, three
domestically-foaled Hanoverians –
Cabana Boy, Pikko del Cerro HU and
Selten HW – swept the division
championships. That’s an astounding
success for one registry and it proves
that our young horses can compete
and win among the best.”
In 2009, SmartPak Equine began
sponsoring Reserve Champion awards
for all of our divisions that have
a second-placed horse. Therefore,
we are able to honor the Reserve
Champions in these three awards
divisions also.
To be eligible for these awards, the
horses must be in the AHS Registry
(transferred in the case of Germanpapered horses) and the owner must
be a current year member of the
AHS (Active, Associate, Junior). Also
we require the horse to be Lifetime
Recorded with USDF, and the owner
and rider must be participating USDF
members for their scores to count
and medians to be determined. We
also strongly encourage members to


2009 season,
the American Hanoverian Society
(AHS) introduced a new set
of awards for young horses who are
competing in Materiale classes in dressage and sport horse breed shows. In
these classes, the horses are ridden in
groups and evaluated and scored
mainly for their gaits, with their
conformation evaluated secondly. The
classes are divided by age and sex and
are for young horses between the ages
of three and five years old.
These awards are sponsored by Kevin
and Ericka Reinig’s KEFA Performance
Horses of Wilton, Calif. “It’s due in no
small part to the generosity and the
passion that individuals such as Kevin
and Erica have for the Hanoverian
horse that the AHS is able to offer such
a comprehensive awards program,”
stated Executive Director Hugh BellisJones. He added, “The AHS is indebted
to the many individuals (some anonymous) who help underwrite the cost of
the awards program year after year.”
To be eligible for these awards, the

2013 AHS Sport Horse Breeding
Winners
For the Sport Horse Breed Shows Awards, records are kept of the points earned
by the Hanoverians competing in the USDF Breed Shows and reward the highest scoring young horses – both fillies and colts, the highest scoring mature
mares, and the highest scoring stallion (AHS licensed). In 2007, the Colts/
Geldings and Fillies were split into “Younger” and “Older” categories. This
means that the AHS now offers year-end awards for these competitions in six
divisions instead of four.

A practical resource and network between places and persons that can properly breed, prepare and train warmblood horses
provided to the AHS membership by the American Hanoverian Society and Hannoveraner Verband.

Hanoverian magazine, the AHS
and the Hannoveraner Verband (HV)
embarked upon a joint enterprise, the
Hanoverian Training Identification
program, to bring long term benefits
to Hanoverian breeders, owners and
competitors in the United States and
Canada. The broad scope of this
program has enabled the society to
generate the AHS Services Directory, a
comprehensive compendium of sport
horse services in North America.

skilled professionals in a variety of areas,
including foaling, mare breeding/teasing,
stallion collection, raising, preparing,
training and marketing young horses
for breed inspections, performance
tests, and sport. We know that there are
many individuals and facilities qualified
in the 15 categories that have been
identified to date, but in a country that
is continental in scope, it is easier said
than done for an individual to locate
the specific help that he or she may
require. For example, where should
AHS members turn to obtain assistance in having a stallion prepared for
Hanoverian licensing? Where can an AHS
member find an experienced person in
his or her state to properly prepare a
mare for free jumping? Now that I
have a newly approved stallion, where
can I send him in my area for collection?
With this in mind, the AHS and HV
intend that the AHS Services Directory
will serve as a practical resource and
network between places and persons
that can properly breed, prepare and
train warmblood horses. A current
listing for the AHS Services Directory
is maintained on the society’s website at
www.hanoverian.org/ahs-servicesdirectory along with forms and checklist
materials for those interested in submitting new applications for the program.

is mailed free to all active members and has a press run of approximately 2,400 copies.
Layout and Design
The American Hanoverian can be contracted to prepare your advertisement for a small fee.
Just send in your photograph/artwork, text and a rough idea for the layout, and we will be happy
to provide an estimate for production. Many ads can be produced for as little as $15 to $25.
Photographs may be added for $20 each. All estimates must be approved by the advertiser
