When WPCSA member Richard Gearhart of CalPoly approached us with the idea of letting his Agricultural Communication students produce the Review, it sounded like a marriage made in heaven. We would be able to produce a color magazine at a reasonable cost and his students would gain valuable experience. However the logistics of the project proved to be too difficult to overcome. So starting with the Spring issue, the Review will be produced in the WPCSA office thanks to Lisa Landis with help from volunteers. To get us back on track we will consolidate the Spring and Summer issues. We will work diligently to get the Review out on time in the future and to make sure we stay in contact with our advertisers. We will offer both color and black and white ads. See the information below for rates and deadlines. We are extending the deadline for the Spring issue since the Spring and Summer Issue will be combined. One word to the advertisers- we will be strict on the deadlines so that the Review will meet its printing schedule. We will email you a copy of your ad to proof before publication. You will have 48 hours to review your ad and make changes. This issue of the Review contains articles and minutes from the AGM in February. Sally Ross Davis and Joanna Wilburn skillfully organized the vast array of ribbons, trophies and personalized gifts for a smooth presentation. The evening’s awards program was masterfully emceed by Jackie Verkuyl and Richard Gearheart while Dr. Ruth Wilburn personally presented each trophy, award or ribbon to happy recipients. Gail Thomson and Sally Steinmetz worked tirelessly on a Power Point presentation featuring all of the ponies and cobs that received Champion and Reserve ribbons. Gail mentioned that she had 100% participation in the presentation – no Thelwell ponies this year! The impending liaison with the USEF and their IT staff was discussed and it was announced that the previous evening’s auction total would more than satisfy the purchase of a new file server! Sunday was the departure date for many attendees; however, many made arrangements to stay for the Judge’s clinic organized by Carrie MacWhorter, focusing on, “Evaluating and Judging Young Stock.” A panel of “experts,” was represented by Section A breeder, Tiz Benedict, Severn Oaks Farm; Section B breeder, Gail Thomson, Gayfields; Section C breeder, Martha Stover, Here-Be Dragons and Section D breeder Gerald Verkuyl, Goldhills Welsh. A Power Point presentation, with input provided by panel members and organized by Carrie, helped to emphasize the type, character and movement of each Welsh section and how important it is to stick to the The futgure of the WPCSA Jackie and Gerald Verkuyl with daughter Samantha and Megan Burtness with son Gavin breed standard. The clinic wrapped up with a virtual class of young stock from each Welsh section, judged and commented on by panel members. Exhausted visitors and committee members reveled in the success of the 2008 AGM as decorations and vendor booths were dismantled. Many thanks again to the WPCAC for all of their hospitality, personal touches and generous donations. The WPCAC was able to provide a Wine and Cheese Reception for guests all three evenings of the AGM. Additionally, wine was available during the dinners both Friday and Saturday evenings. This was made possible only due to the gracious donations of wine by both WPCAC Members and Wineries from both the Paso Robles area and the Lodi Area. This event would not have been possible without your generous donations. Thank you! Stover This article was first featured in the Equine Journal, June 2008 Welsh are not just ponies and not just for kids! Welsh Cobs and Welsh crossbreds are enjoying the spotlight in the Sport Horse world, in the higher levels of Dressage, and the physically demanding phases of Eventing and Combined Driving Events. Long dominating the children’s hunter pony market, Welsh ponies are the breed of choice - or the blood of choice - for pony hunters. Many recall a childhood pony; and whether or not it was ever pure Welsh, there is usually some recollection that Welsh blood was in there somewhere; the expressive eye, small ears or chiseled head are the clear indicators. But what about the Welsh pony’s bigger Welsh relatives? The Welsh Cob and Welsh crosses are often packaged in “horse” sized bodies. Admirers of the Welsh breed are more than willing to educate a newcomer on the broad range of sizes and types (see sidebar) of Welsh and one thing is clear, no matter what size package – Welsh are valued for their character, hardiness and willingness to work. What size is right for you? Section A - Welsh Mountain Pony Not exceeding 12.2 hands Section B - Welsh Pony Not exceeding 14.2 hands Section C - Welsh Pony of Cob Type Not exceeding 13.2 hands Section D - Welsh Cob Exceeding 13.2 hands high with no upper limit Half Welsh One registered Welsh parent, no upper limit How are we using our Welsh “horses?” Adults and growing youth continue to enjoy the same activities as the smaller counterparts albeit on a bigger scale! In the Dressage ring, feathers fly when the Welsh Cob stallion, North Forks Cardi enters the ring. Cardi, owned, trained and ridden by the team of Cindy Miller of Winterlake Farm, Pleasant Hill, OR and Jessica Wisdom, has multiple scores in the 70’s under his girth and consistently earned champion ribbons at each level. He is ranked #1 in Region 6 and is #19 countrywide for 2007 at Third Level Open. Cardi, a coming 7-year old, 14.3 hands, barely a horse by definition, is making his debut at Prix St. George in 2008. On the Eastern side of the U.S., up and coming Welsh Cob gelding, Glenhaven Barossa Valley, has earned the spotlight at the prestigious Dressage at Devon (DAD) venue, Devon, PA. DAD boasts the largest Breed show in the world and the biggest Dressage show outside Europe and holds classes specifically geared toward FEI (International) Level competition. 6-year old, “BV” was the High Score American Bred Three Year Old, and is a two time winner of the Born in the USA Breeders Award. The Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America (WPCSA) awarded BV the USDF All Breed Horse of The Year award for FEI Five Year Olds. Owned by Angela Maloney, Eatontown, NJ, and ridden by USDF Gold Medalist, Brenda Doudican, Yellowbrook Dressage Center, Farmingdale, NJ, BV competed at Second Level Open and Third Level Open in 2007 and is well on track to being one of the Eastern Dressage regions stars of the future. Winning at Devon is an excellent “feather” in the cap for both horse and rider and who better than another Welsh Cob team? The rigors of the Cross Country course, the suppleness required in Dressage and the power and willingness desired for Show Jumping are all conducive to the well established Welsh character and famous work ethic. Welsh Cob stallion, GF Prince Albert and Jessica San Diego, of Moss Point, MS are actively chasing competition around Eventing courses in the Southern U.S. Already a multi-time national champion on the Welsh show circuit, 7-year Welsh Review 10 old Albert, 14 hands 1-3/4” and still pony-sized, regularly challenges the course and his bigger adversaries at the Novice levels. Jess’ mom Laura San Diego says that Team Albert, “always gets noticed, the Beginner Novice and Novice USEA divisions are full of ponies, many obviously Welsh. There is definitely a market in Eventing for well trained Welsh and Welsh Cobs.” Currently, Jessica and Albert are qualified for American Eventing Championships in 2008. Welsh Cobs and Welsh crosses are well known for their athleticism and handiness in the equine sport GF Prince Albert and Jessica San Diego sail over the fence at the American Eventing Championships in 2007 of Combined Driving (CDE). Modeled after the Three Day Event, the 3 phases of the CDE challenge the overall condition and versatility of the horse. Each horse, driver and navigator team must demonstrate suppleness and flexibility in the Dressage ring, then plot their best route through Cross Country hazards and negotiate a precise path through the Cones course. In 2005, the Welsh Pony of Cob Type (Section C), Cefnoakpark Bouncer, made driving history with driver Suzy Stafford as the first team from the U.S. to win the Gold Medal at the FEI Pony Driving Singles World Championships in Devonshire, England. Bouncer and Stafford earned the best score out of 81 entries from 16 countries! The duo continued to excel that year, receiving two more driving Grand Championships in the United States. Bouncer was also a Farnam-Platform/USEF Horse of the Year Finalist, nominated by the American Driving Society and the WPCSA. To top it off, Bouncer was chosen to represent the Breyer Welsh Pony of Cob Type model! We don’t have to compete with our Welsh to enjoy them. Our ponies and cobs are beloved equine partners and we continually seek activities that challenge their minds and talents. In Fort Worth, Texas, Caitlin Sewell of Cliffside Farm uses her Welsh Cob stallion, Lidgett Meredith, for foxhunting with the Brazos Valley Hunt. Traditional hunting uses a pack of foxhounds that hunt by following the scent of either a fox or coyote. Hunting requires a strong, bold horse with excellent manners that can carry its rider across country. Once the hounds find a scent, the fun begins and the field must negotiate whatever obstacles are encountered along the way to keep up with the pack. “Max,” another multi-time national champion on the Welsh show circuit, was the 2006 USEF Horse of the Year champion in Welsh Pleasure, Section C/D. Photo: Carol Sewell The Welsh breed is varied in sizes and talents and once we start our childhood love affair through that first Welsh encounter, we return as adults. It is clear that we can enjoy every equine activity from trail riding to pleasure driving to International Level competition with our Welsh. Whether you start out with a Welsh of “pony” size or a Welsh of “horse” size, there is not much difference in the true character of the breed. Welsh are strong and hardy with the spirit of ancestors that survived many harsh winters in the sparse hills and valleys of the Welsh countryside: size just doesn’t really seem to matter! Scholarship Recipient - Katie Lyons Thank you to the Welsh Pony & Cob Foundation for choosing myself as one of the recipients of the 2007 Mollie Butler/J.D. Orear Memorial Scholarships! I have been working with Welsh ponies for almost my entire riding career. I received my half-Welsh, Cuesta San Antonio, almost five years ago and have been competing him in the Northeast every summer. I am attending Morrisville State College as a freshman, majoring in Equine Science and Management. I hope to narrow down my degree in the next year to something more specific such as nutrition or breeding. I love going to school here and enjoy all the time that I get to spend with the amazing horses, people and the knowledge that I am learning. In the future, I would love to have my own facility where I can breed and raise Welsh Ponies and continue to expand the breed. NEXT BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING: October 11 & 12 in Cincinnati, Ohio Welsh Review 15 Minutes of the AGM ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING February 16, 2008 The Annual General Meeting of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America, Inc. was called to order by the President, Dr. Ruth Wilburn, at 9:17 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Sheraton Stockton Hotel at Regent Pointe, Stockton, California. I. President’s Report The President introduced herself and welcomed everyone to the meeting. She read the purpose of the Society from the By-Laws which is as follows: The purpose of this Society is to maintain a Registry for the recording of pedigrees and transfers of Welsh ponies and cobs, to promote the breeding and use of the breed while striving to maintain its purity and trueness to type and to further its welfare in every way. The President reported that three Directors, Dr. Roberts, Kathy Reese, and Teresa Lemon, had been unable to attend due to weather conditions. She asked each person to introduce themselves. The President asked that we remember those members that had passed away within the past year, including Donna Ahlberg, Michael Butts, David Conian and Priscilla Wells. A moment of silence was observed in remembrance. The President gave an overview of her written report, which was printed in the program. She thanked the WPCAC for hosting such a wonderful meeting. They have worked very hard and put on a Convention that raises the bar. II. Reading of the Minutes The President asked for the reading of the minutes of the previous annual meeting. The motion by Sally Ross Davis that the minutes be accepted as printed in the Review was unanimously adopted. III. Secretary’s Report The Secretary’s report was printed in the program given to each member. IV. Treasurer’s Report The budget was printed in the program given to each member. Jay Hubert requested a copy of the profit and loss statement. This will be mailed to him. Mrs. Thomson, Finance Committee Chairman, gave an overview of the current knowledge of the expected expenses of the new computer system. V. Unfinished Business There was no unfinished business. Pat Cochran asked for information about the Review. Richard Gearhart was not in the room to report but will be asked to attend the Board meeting. A breakdown of advertising separate from cooperative advertising was requested. It was requested that the website notify members when the ballots have been mailed. YOUTH COMMITTEE Mrs. Petersen asked that anyone with suggestions for the committee to please contact her. Please encourage the children in your area to participate in the All Around High Point Youth Program. Some children may need assistance completing the forms. Forms should be available at the shows and are on-line. Fun classes for the kids at shows are encouraged. NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE The results of the election will be announced at the meeting. Life members who wish to run for the board can request forms from the office. ETHICS AND HEARING A letter from Dr. Roberts was distributed and will be published in the Welsh Review. CONVENTION AND ANNUAL MEETING The President thanked David Yee for coordinating the volunteers of the convention. Mr. Yee thanked Judy Hubert, Jackie Verkuyl, Tammy Burgin and the WPCAC Directors for all their help coordinating the events as well as Sue Yee (decorations), Alison Rhue and Gretchen Aiken (stallion auction), Martha Stover (silent auction), Dianne Sommer (live auction and guest speakers) and Wendy Petersen (convention program). The next Convention will be held in Fort Worth, Texas. Carol Sewell has volunteered to help coordinate that convention and would like input as to activities. The 2010 convention will be in Lexington, Kentucky, with 2011 being held in Baltimore, Maryland. Ideas and suggested programs should be submitted to the office. LICENSED OFFICIALS Dr. Benedict reported that a meeting to interview judges would be held in the afternoon. VI. New Business There was no new business. VII. Committee Reports Each member present at the meeting was given a written report from the Committees. These are filed herewith. It was requested that she be able to provide feedback as to the success of the responses the advertisers receive and the circulation of the magazine. SHOW SANCTIONING/HIGH SCORE Mrs. Petersen requested that exhibiters send in the forms. HALF-WELSH/PART BRED Half-Welsh exhibitors would like more classes and are encouraged to contact show management and sponsor classes. The halfWelsh Joy Jeremiah owned by the Bower family and trained by Wendy Stephens is now competing in the Extreme Cowboy television program. One of the oldest, and THE largest CDE in Western North America, this year’s version featured 73 net entries, ranging in size from a draft cross, to Miniature Horses, known as VSE’s (Very Small Equines) in the Combined Driving World. Out of the 73 entries, 14 were Welsh or Welsh cross. In terms of animals, counting three multiples the breakdown was as follows: Section A – 7, Section B - 4, Section C – 2, Section D – 4, and ½ Welsh 3, for a total of 20 animals. In terms of results, the Welsh dominated the awards, winning ail but two of the divisions in which they competed! Tasha Wilke and her ½ Welsh Princeton won Intermediate Single Pony. Jay Hubert and his A/C Tandem of Coffing Oaks Felicity and Oakdale Ebony Elite won Preliminary Multiples followed by Merrie Morgan and her four in hand of Section A Geldings, High Sierra Armed and Dangerous (Ruger), Ripcord, Riven, and Rimfire. (All Carry the High Sierra prefix) Donna Yanik, of Oregon, won Preliminary Pair Pony with her Section B pair, Snow Valley Eternally Yours and Snow Valley Millennium Gold. Jay Hubert spoke of how well ponies were doing in recent driving competitions. Gail Thomson and Sally Steinmetz were thanked for all the hard work they had put into the Power Point presentations for the awards banquet and luncheon.
