Academic Camps
CBA Engineering with Arduino
This camp gives students an introduction to the world of electrical and computer engineering
with Arduino. Arduino consists of two parts; the hardware and the software, and with these you
can build almost anything, from a simple flashing light to a box of tricks that sends you a
Twitter message when your oven is preheated! Arduino has become extremely popular since it
was first developed in 2005. Many colleges across the country are using Arduinos in their
introductory engineering courses.
Included with camp registration is an Arduino starter kit, consisting of an Arduino UNO board, a
project book, and all of the electronic components required to get off the ground. Register on
or before 6/11/2015 to guarantee that a kit is ordered and assembled in time for camp.
Registration is limited to 15 students.

CBA College Personal Statement Workshop
Writing Week 1: July 29th—July 31st(Wednesday – Friday)
Writing Week 2: August 3rd—5th (Monday – Wednesday)
The second session is a repeat of the first – you should only attend one.
Get a head start on your college application process with this 3 day workshop! One of the
most important parts of your college application will be your personal statement. It’s how
you let college admissions counselors see YOU. Over the course of three mornings, you will
be guided toward the topics that best suit your personality. Once you have drafted a statement, we will work together to revise it and make it the best it can be. This workshop is only
the start – Mrs. Mannion will assist you as you go through the application process, helping
you to fine tune your statement for each college and work on any additional essays your
chosen college may require. We will also begin your work on the online Common Application. Registration for each session is limited to the first 20 paid attendees.

Chess Camp
Ages 6-16
USA Chess is the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is comprised of the
finest children’s chess instructors in North America. Registration options include mornings, afternoon and all-day sessions.
Campers experience chess instruction and play in a fun filled environment designed to improve their skills whether they are
interested in casual or competitive chess. Tuition includes trophy, chess set and much more. Please visit:

Game builder Video Game Creation Camps
Ages 8—16
Active Learning Services’ video game creation camps offer programs that use our custom designed curriculum that provide
campers to use their creativity as they learn to program a video game using step-by-step instructions while learning about
the history of game design, design concepts, game styles and more! There are no prerequisites. All video creation programs
are half-day programs that can be combined with an additional Active Learning Services offering to make a full day camp.
Video Game Creation-Arcade Style
Ages 8-16
Children as young as 7 years old can build their very own video game. Kodu, designed by a team from Microsoft is an easy
to learn and fun way to create a unique video game. At our Active Learning Kodu video game creation camp, children 7-12
will learn to create a unique game using a curriculum created by Active Learning. In a step by step progression, characters
are directed to move, collect bonus objects, defeat enemies and complete tasks to dominate the game. Kids design their
own worlds and then will program their characters, create health, scoring, spawning characters and other cool features of
their favorite games. At the end of the camp, if they bring a flash drive, they can take their game home with them to continue to create, or play.
Updated and Expanded for 2015!
Kudo Video Game Creation – Go-Kart Style
Ages 7-16
Children will create something similar to a Mario Go-Kart style game. Campers begin by designing their own world. Worlds
can have mountains, valleys, lakes, hills, etc. or they can be a design unlike anything you have seen before; it’s totally up to
the camper! Next they place characters into the world and program them to move about, interfacing with other characters,
even talking, and using scripts written for the character. Campers can program characters to pick up objects, engage opponents, and overcome villains. Whether it is collecting enough diamonds before time expires, navigating through the challenging obstacle course, or racing against a friend they are sure to have fun!
Registration: Directly with USA Chess and not through Christian Brothers Academy.

CBA Creative Writing Camp
If you want to write short stories, novels, screenplays, or plays, you need to know the rules
of story. Characters, danger, and description are the ingredients, but how do you make
them exciting? Mrs. Shull uses her experience advising published writers to help you understand what works, and why. Bring things in progress, or create something new as we write,
role-play, and explore how to make the hero and villains come to life. For beginning and
advanced writers, grades 7-12.
