THE OLD MUSKET GAME: A Brief History
Welcome, once again, to one of this community’s great traditions--the rivalry game for “The Old Musket.”
This year marks the 62nd anniversary of the first game between GHS and HHS.
East San Diego County’s oldest high school sports trophy, the “Old Musket” symbolizes the honorable
struggle between two brother institutions, the elder Grossmont High (1920) and its first district sibling--Helix
High (1951).
Since the first matchup on November 2, 1951, this local community rivalry game has held a special place in
the memories of all players, coaches, parents, alumni, faculty and fans--whether their team had won or lost
that year.
The original “musket” came from the family of Jack Campbell, Helix High School’s first senior class president, starting halfback and 1952 Class valedictorian. Campbell’s father Sidney had inherited the 19th
century antique firearm, sometimes referred to as “Old Betsey” and the “Campbell Musket,” and offered it
to the schools as a perpetual trophy.
In the 1950’s and the 1960’s, the Musket Games were so popular that the contests were regularly
scheduled for Aztec Bowl at San Diego State or Balboa Stadium downtown.
The Grossmont versus Helix game has seen many great matchups featuring outstanding players,
championship teams and life-long memories that have fed local history and legend.
In many ways the Foothiller-Highlander rivalry is a celebration of the close-knit comradeship of good, clean,
hard-fought competition.
