Quiz Night Fun
I attended my first GOPS
Quiz Night last Saturday. I
thoroughly enjoyed it as I got
to see the generosity of the
school community in the
donation of goods and
services and in the bidding and buying of such. I also
saw the amazing amount of energy and
commitment shown by members of the Fundraising
committee. I loved seeing the masks, costumes and
table decorations, with staff members enjoying the
celebrations and socialising along with parents.
Michelle Moran, Jodie Poole, Matt Farmer, Chris
Ferguson, Elesa Wood and Lea Manou were
champions of organisation and fun. Shane Ferguson
as DJ produced a fascinating light show and dance
music to keep the place jumping until after midnight
and Matt’s cocktail bar was a big hit.
A great night all round and a credit to the
community.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to 3 of
our
choir
students,
Karolyn, Matthew and
Zara, who have been
selected to participate
in the recording process
for the 2017 Festival of Music CD. This is indeed an
honour and a privilege as well as a great learning
experience. They will be attending rehearsals in their
own time and recording will take place next term.
Well done to these students on their hard work, focus
and dedication.
New Carpet
New carpet is being laid down one end of the JP
corridor due to flood damage to the old one. On
30th Aug, SA Water shut off the water due to work in
Fisher Street. It came on during the night and
because a tap had been left on in the Art sink,
flooding ensued. The cost is being covered by
DECD.
Staff Matters
Welcome to Sam Whitton who is taking the Year 7
class for the rest of Term 3 while Tony Offord is on
Long Service Leave. Tony will be back in Term 4.
Tanya Scobie is taking Long Service Leave in Term 4
and Theresa Andreucci will be taking on the Deputy
Principal role. She was appointed through an
internal merit selection process and a replacement
teacher for the Year 5/6 class is being organised.
Teachers and SSOs attended a professional
development session on promoting resilience and
well-being for students on the Student Free Day last
Monday. Andrew Fuller, a clinical psychologist,
explained lots of practical strategies to use with
students to encourage optimal learning. He also
informed us on some of the latest research into how
the brain learns.
Kids Matter
KidsMatter is a whole school
Well Being program that
Vanessa Secomb and an
Action Team of parents and
teachers are initiating. I attended a professional
development session with Vanessa, Genna Smiley
and Katie O’Reilly last week where we explored
aspects of the program and resources to use.
Promoting a positive school community is the first
focus and the Governing Council enjoyed a short
information session with Vanessa on Wednesday
night. This is not a new program but is a framework of
operating that allows for a range of programs and
systems to be used in order to promote good mental
health and well-being for students across the school.
You can read more information about this further on
in this newsletter.
Diagnostic Tests
Progressive
Achievement
Testing
(PAT)
in
Mathematics and Reading Comprehension has
taken place over the last 2 weeks (online mandatory
testing for all DECD students in Years 3-7). Results are
immediate and teachers use these to inform their
planning for individual students as well as to inform
their general class programs.
School Stream
Schoolstream is a
mobile school app
that delivers information about school events, news
and meetings in real time, directly to parents on their
mobile devices. This app is available for you to
download for free as Glen Osmond is a registered
school. Instructions on how to do this on your phone
or ipad are included in this newsletter, see page 8.

LEARNING SNAPSHOT – Room 9 Yrs 1 & 2
Left: a city built with MABs – maths equipment!
During creative play children explore,
investigate, build, modify, adapt, predict, share,
cooperate …
I wonder how many people there are in the city!
The unit cubes represent the people.
Below: a picture theatre created using MABs and
a construction activity using a kit.
In Mathematics children investigate
number situations and record what
they find out in their own way. The
different ways of recording are shared
with the class. Children decide the
most efficient ways, discuss the
processes used and consider what
they might use next time.
Below, below left: an investigation about how many lollies
children purchased altogether in small, medium and big
bags. Strategies used – number lines, chunking, doubles facts,
repeated addition.
STEM
Science, Technology,
Engineering & Maths:
Buddy class activity – Room 3 shared their
learning about aboriginal culture with a
focus on Dreaming stories.
Children constructed a
Cup & Ball game using
mathematical knowledge
of cones and cylinders and
a
variety
of
joining
techniques e.g. tapes and
flaps. They investigated the
most suitable length of
string to complete the
game.
SPORT NEWS - SAPSASA
Adelaide South East District Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to the 40 GOPS students who
represented our school at the ASE District
Athletics Carnival at Santos Stadium on Monday
5th September. We had perfect weather for the
day and the effort of all the students was
outstanding. Many achieved personal best
times or distances and all represented the
school in an exemplary manner.
I’d like to thank all the parents for their support
and especially acknowledge those that helped
on the day;
Cheree McEwen, Bernie Bohacik, Damian
Eccleston, Kay Eccleston, Graham Smith, Louise
Alderson, Debbie Neely and Melinda Burr.
Without your support the students would not
have had the opportunity to compete.
Congratulations to the following students who
competed in finals;
Mollie W, Scarlett A, Ashleigh P, Ivy C, Dylan M,
Oliver P, Saif K, Lucy N, Elsie F and Megan W.
Congratulations to those who placed in field
events;
Dylan M, Rosie A, Max T, Zara S and Ethan P.
We also did very well in the relays and the 11
year old girls won their division- congratulations
Ashleigh P, Scarlett A, Rosie A and Emily S.
Our results this year were our best ever. We
placed 8th out of the 14 schools competing and
second in the small schools division behind
Black Forest.
Finally we are very proud to announce that Saif
K, Dylan M, Max T and Scarlett A will represent
our district at the Metro Athletics Carnival on
the 27th of September at Santos Stadium. We
wish them well.

SPORT NEWS – BASKETBALL NOMINATIONS
Basketball nominations for
Term 4, 2016 and Term 1, 2017
We will start the phasing in of
the ‘Trybooking’ system for
sports nominations this term.
The cricket and softball teams
continue from Term 1, but the winter basketball
finishes at the end of Term 3 and the Summer Season
begins next term. With this in mind we thought
trialling the system, when only one sport nomination
was required, was a good place to start.
Payment and nominations will be through
TRYBOOKING
http://www.trybooking.com/MBMC
Instructions: Click on the link above.
Select the basketball team.
Select fees and continue with the booking.
If you have more than one child to pay for, follow
the booking until the shopping cart appears and
then select “This Event” next to “continue shopping’.
This will take you back to the start and you can
nominate your second child for basketball. You can
then pay for both players in the one transaction.
Please nominate by Wednesday 21st of September
so that students can be notified of their team before
the end of the term. All teams require a coach and
a team manager.
Regards
Liz Osborn
FROM OUR SCHOOL COUNSELLOR
KidsMatter is a flexible,
whole-school approach to
improving children’s mental
health and wellbeing which
we see as an important
initiative that we wish to
embrace in building our positive, caring school
culture.
Through KidsMatter , schools undertake a two-to
three-year cyclical process in which they plan
and take action to be a positive community;
one that is founded on respectful relationships
and a sense of belonging and inclusion, and
that promotes:
 social and emotional learning (including
evidence-based social and emotional
learning programs)
 working authentically with parents,
carers and families
 support for students who may be
experiencing mental health difficulties.
An essential element of successfully
implementing a whole-school initiative, such as
KidsMatter, is to ensure that the views of staff,
students, parents and carers are taken into
account. To successfully achieve this, staff,
students and parents/carers are invited to
complete an online survey.
The survey asks your perspective
on your child’s school and what
you think is important for the
school to consider in better
supporting children’s mental
health and wellbeing.
Our School has an ACTION TEAM consisting of
staff, students and parents who will be driving
this Whole School Approach to ensure GOPS
has a happy, positive school community which
focuses on mental health and wellbeing. We
will use the data from the surveys to help plan
future directions for our school. The ACTION
TEAM will work together to present ongoing
training and development to staff. Parent
workshops could be organised in collaboration
with the Well-Being committee to ensure the
whole community is involved.
We look forward to working together to ensure
our school is the best place for all our children
to learn and grow.
The survey should only take 10 minutes. To
access the survey, go to:
https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/primary/otherresources/school-surveys/parent-survey
Thank you,
Vanessa Secomb

Friendship Seat Dedication
Tuesday 18th October
9.00-9.30am – all welcome
When children return from holidays next term, families will notice that the Friendship Seat has been
installed and a tree planted next to it on the oval. The seat and tree are to celebrate the life of Caitlin,
a past student of our school who tragically passed away in a car accident in April this year along with
her sister Willow and grandparents Greg and Rosemary. The seat and tree have been made possible
by the amazing generosity of the school community in raising funds through the casual day and bake
stall on Caitlin’s 11th birthday in June.
We would like to dedicate the Friendship Seat and tree to Caitlin through a small ceremony on the first
day back in Term 4 – Tuesday 18th October – 9.00-9.30am. The whole school will be present and we
welcome all parents/families who wish to attend. Students are asked to be at their classroom by
8.50am and will then walk to the oval with their class. Parents/families are invited to congregate
standing behind the section reserved for the children sitting on the grass.
We look forward to dedicating the Friendship Seat and tree to Caitlin and remembering and
honouring her life at this ceremony.
