Cohort 12 Open House Flyer - Emerging Scholars Program
EMERGING SCHOLARS
identifies motivated and capable underserved fourth
grade students from the Washington, DC, metropolitan area and prepares them to thrive in
independent schools. Through its intensive academic, social and cultural program, and working
closely with families, Emerging Scholars puts its scholars on a path to become effective leaders
and engaged citizens in their academic careers and beyond.
1,000 HOURS
Studies have shown that one of the greatest disparities between upper-income and working-class
children is access to summer and out-of-school learning experiences. Emerging Scholars Program’s 14-month
academy provides its scholars with over 1,000 hours of hands-on, intensive academic enrichment and leadership
training.

I am going to be a psychiatrist, so I planned to work at the Alexandria Hospital across the street from my school
in the psychiatric ward. However, when the opportunity was presented to me to work as an English tutor at the
Theresianum Akademie Wien in Vienna, Austria, I was thrilled and jumped at the chance.
Miss Summer Thomas is a member of Cohort 1 (2005) and a recent graduate of Episcopal High School in
