THE SACRAMENTO WOMEN’S CHORUS Under the direction of Robin Richie April 25, 2015 Opening Hearts and Minds Through Music swc_program_415.indd 1 4/22/2015 10:00:22 AM SWC A Community of Women Who Love to Sing Sacramento Women’s Chorus has been a vibrant community chorus for over 25 years, bringing a wide variety of music to the Sacramento area. Women join SWC for many reasons — a major benefit is the friendship, collaboration and fun we have. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the chorus has remained true to our original principles and our mission — to provide women a safe place to raise our voices in song in service to issues of vital importance to all women. Since our first performance in 1987, at a benefit event for a women’s wheelchair basketball team, SWC has come to be recognized as an important part of the activist arts community. SWC can be counted on to sing at events for women’s issues, equal rights for all, peace and justice, and LGBT pride events. SWC has joined voices with other choruses from all over the world, through our affiliation with the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA) at festivals in San Jose in 2000 and Montreal in 2004. And we are headed to the GALA festival in Denver in 2016! SWC has sung for Women’s History events, Take Back the Night rallies, the California Commission on the Status of Women, the California State NOW Conference, the YWCA, WEAVE, CARES, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, and the Girl Scouts. We have participated in events with the Placerville Season for Nonviolence, World AIDS Day, PFLAG’s Services of Remembrance to honor victims of violence against gay, lesbian, and transgender persons, and remembrance services with the Kaiser Hospice programs. She is known as a vocal performer, educator, vocal coach and creative leader whose imagination has lifted the profile and expertise of SWC. She challenges each singer in the Chorus to expect the best from herself and to grow in technical and performance skills. With a B.A. in Music Education from Mt. St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, OH, and a Master of Music in Music Education from University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Robin actively contributes to the Sacramento region’s musical future as an elementary school music teacher for band and orchestra in Rocklin. Accompanist KAMILYN DAVIS Kamilyn Davis was raised in Sonoma County. She sang in the Santa Rosa Children’s Chorus from ages 7-12 and studied piano, pipe organ, violin, conducting, acting and accompanying until leaving home for college at age 16. During college she sang and played the piano with choirs throughout most of the United States including Alaska, and in Italy and Israel. Kamilyn moved to Sacramento in 2006 and has worked as a piano teacher, an organist, a vocal coach, a choral conductor, a musical theatre director, and an accompanist for vocalists, instrumentalists, choirs, and musical theatre productions. swc_program_415.indd 4 4/22/2015 10:00:23 AM Volunteers Drive Success at SWC’s Performance The Sacramento Women’s Chorus appreciates the support of our audiences. Without you filling the seats, we wouldn’t be able to reach out with our messages of hope, of the healing power of music, and the joy we find in singing. We work hard to bring you quality performances. If not for you, we would not be able to pay our bills. There are many costs associated with operating a vibrant community chorus: we rent rehearsal space, pay our Artistic Director and Accompanist, purchase music, print programs, buy risers, and more. Thank you from the bottom of our many hearts. swc_program_415.indd 5 Guest Artist SISTER SWING Sister Swing is a trio of vocalists dedicated to fun and frivolity while preserving the vintage jazz sounds of the girl groups of the 1930s and 1940s. Whether they are singing swing, boogie woogie, ballads or 2 step, their sound is authentic and very much their own. They are backed by a powerhouse band of the finest musicians in Sacramento area. Sister Swing has been entertaining professionally for 20 years together, (yes, the same three women) but came from very different musical backgrounds before they met. Valerie, lead singer, honed her skills in top 40, Paula sang angelically in church and jazz groups, and Leigh cut her singing teeth performing classical and theater music in school. The story of how they actually met is something which can only be disclosed in dark places over drinks. Sister Swing has had the honor of receiving the Best Swing Band from the Sacramento News and Review Magazine, Best of Sacramento in 2005, they've sung with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra as well as opened for the Glenn Miller orchestra. They had the distinct honor of singing for Bob Hope and his wife at the Wings Over Stockton Air Show. They love harmony, laughter, dressing up like Big Girls and just generally goofing off. Like most musicians, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they weren't making music and bringing it to other people. 4/22/2015 10:00:23 AM SWC, in Harmony with the Community The Sacramento Women’s Chorus works to be self-supporting through fund raising concerts and appearances. In addition, we depend upon the generosity of individuals and businesses in our community to help is grow and thrive. Our aim is to remain true to the principles that drive our musical mission while offering top level entertainment to the community. Support from Sacramento businesses, individuals and small grants from community organizations such as the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission keep us singing for joy!
