A PICTURE OF MAMA
- By Mattie Lavon
If a Saint could be a flower,
In the Garden of Life here below,
Mama would be a red, red rose For that is the flower of Love, you know!
4
If a Saint could be a color,
To paint what’s on her mind,
Mama would be a Royal Blue Only the color of heaven would do!
5
If a Saint could be a sweet melody,
A song, to express how she feels,
Mama would sing, loud and bold “It is well, it is well, with my soul!”
6
A flower of love we hold for a time,
A Saint with heaven on her mind,
A soul at peace, secure and calm A Picture of Mama, who loves us all!
My poem is one way I
have honored my
mother since her
passing in 1983. She
taught me so much, as
I learned from her example of how a godly
woman is supposed to
live.
-Mattie Lavon
Is your mother still here? Honor her
while you have the opportunity!
Remember her this Mother’s Day.
If your mother is in heaven, there are
ways to show your love and gratitude
for her life. Why not give to a cause
that honors her and glorifies Jesus?

MAY, 2012
From Your Interim Director of Missions - Rev. Cliff Mattox
As Spring is fully upon us, Easter
celebrations are a memory and it’s
already HOT. I hope that your excitement for what God has in store
for you and your church is at an all
time high!
God is truly good all the time.
Many of you have shared reports of
your Resurrection Sunday events --keep them coming.
Have you had any thoughts of
“What’s next?” The two disciples on
the road to Emmaus certainly did.
But after “their eyes were opened
and they knew Him...they rose up
that very hour” (Luke 24:31-33) and
shared what had happened. Where
are we on our “Emmaus Road” journey of life? Are we still trying to figure out just exactly who Jesus is and
how He can affect our life? That’s
OK...keep seeking Him. Hopefully
many of you are at that point of
rising up and telling others about
who Jesus is and what He has done
in your life’s journey. That is truly
something to be excited about.
“Get all excited, go tell everybody
that Jesus Christ is King!” Time is
short. A very good friend of mine always says it this way: “It’s only Good
News...if it’s not too late!”
Any May communication would be
incomplete without some mention of
our Mothers. (At least that’s what my
wife and Mattie reminds me!)
Seriously men, don’t forget the
Mothers in your life...without them
none of us would be here. Come to
think of it, I guess that applies to all
of us. Mothers, don’t forget the influence you are in the lives of your family. From you, most of us learn about
love, diligence, and the fear of the
Lord.
My wife’s favorite scripture as she
has taught children to remember
their mothers is Proverbs 31:38-30
which says in part, “Her children rise
up and call her blessed; her husband
also, and he praises her...Charm is
deceitful and beauty is passing, but a
woman who fears the Lord, she shall
be praised.”
May we all remember our Mothers
and the virtuous women of influence
that they are.
Did you notice how the idea of “rising
up” was in both of these ideas? Let me
close with that reminder….”Rise up, oh
church of God!”

Explaining Marriage
The child was a typical four-yearold girl - cute, inquisitive, bright as a
new penny. When she expressed
difficulty in grasping the concept of
marriage, her father decided to pull
out his wedding photo album, thinking visual images would help.
One page after another, he
pointed out the bride arriving, the
entrance, the wedding ceremony,
the recessional, the reception, etc.
“Now do you understand?” he
asked.
“I think so,” she said. “Is that when
mommy came to work for us?”
The Bathroom Scale
Two kids went into their parent’s
bathroom and noticed the scales in the
corner. “Whatever you do,” cautioned
the older brother, “don’t ever step on
that!”
“Why not?” asked the little brother.
“Because every time Mom does, she
lets out an awful scream and sounds
like she’s crying!”
work done, bedtime stories read, washing
done, folding clothes, paying bills, mopping
the kitchen floor, vacuuming, scrubbing the
toilets and bathtubs, going to work the next
day for 8 hours, plus chauffeuring kids to
school and soccer/ballet/baseball games,
playing catch on the weekends with the kids
and taking them for long walks, hiking,
swimming … and yet you still manage to
gain ten pounds!
Little Johnny
Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as
his mother gently rubbed cold cream on
You’re a Mom when…
her face. “Why are you doing that,
You know you’re a Mom when you’re Mom?” he asked. “To make myself
beautiful,” she replied. Then Johnny

watched as she took a tissue and recooking dinner, cleaning up the
