NEWS THE The newsletter of QuickSilver Swimming December 2012 This Month: Coach's Corner 1 Reminders 1 Terrapins Sr. III 2 Life Does in Fact Happen When You’re Making Plans Walnut Crk Sr. II 2 Why do I do this crazy sport? Bet some of you were asking yourselves that very question at JO’s earlier this month. I know the Coaches were asking that question. Sectionals 2 Did you come up with an answer? Race to JO's 3 14 & Under JO's 4 Zones Qualifier 5 Q's Question 7 Give a Cheer! 8 In the Spotlight 9 Let me help. . . .Has your life been without “bumps” or adversity? Does everything always go as planned? Have you ever been focused and ready for a big meeting or event only to find yourself face to face with an unplanned problem? You or your loved one is sick? The car has a flat tire? There is a major accident closing the roads between you and your planned event? What do you do? Life happens and it is not always what we want or what we plan for . . . but it happens none the less. If all had gone according to plan we would have had the same beautiful weather at JO’s as we had over Thanksgiving weekend . . . but it did not go according to plan and we had to do the best we could under the circumstances. Was it a waste? Was it a ruined weekend? Absolutely not! Might one view it as disappointing? Absolutely, but it was not a wasted . . . it turned into a very valuable lesson for our swimmers that they will remember and carry forward throughout their lives. It was a very large deposit in the “confidence bank”. If they can handle themselves and swim best times or near best times under these conditions than they will know that in the future any tests, interviews or meetings they have are things that they too can handle. Thank you for enduring the rotten conditions so that your child can have an opportunity to test and grow their confidence and character. It is not easy being a parent. . . Thank You! -Coach Janet December 24 - January 1 January 19 - 20 January 24 11 Holiday Break - No workouts Zones Champs @ Gunderson Birthday Celebrations - All sites This Sr. meet was attended by 13 of our senior swimmers who earned 17 new best times, including 3 new Far Western's and 1 new PRT. I found that to be a valid and important question. Here's my answer(s). First, the coach is going to spend more time with my son than I am. Therefore, if my son grows up to be like the coach, I want the coach to be a role model of excellence. Here are the things I think go into that role modeling. #1. Truthfulness. You can be wrong. You can't be dishonest. #2. Fairness. I don't expect everyone to be treated the same because everyone is different. But I do expect treatment of the child commensurate with the commitment of the child to the sport and team. #3. A commitment to teaching. Both swimming skills and life skills. We're put on earth to help one another. I want the coach to teach my son that. #4. Hard work. In our family we believe in the importance of hard work, and that hard work is its own intrinsic reward. It's not just Hard work= Success, it's that hard work is rewarding all by itself. #5. Achievement. Goal setting is important. Working towards the goal is even more important. #6. Resilience. We all get knocked down by life (and sport). Getting back up every time and going back at it with no sulking is vital. We grow by defeats and our response to them, not by the victories in life. Cheap victories are expensive in the long run. #7. Respect. For other's work, other's achievements, other's effort. Learn that achievement is difficult and should be respected in every field. #8. Respect, part two. All human work has dignity and deserves respect. The guy collecting garbage from in front of your house in the hot south Florida sun has a heck of a hard job. Call him sir, mean it, and when you can, help him lift a can or two. #9. Learning to be a learner (lifelong variety) is important to your development. #10. Love and respect your elders. We ALL stand on the shoulders of someone and we don't get to land on the mountain top by helicopter and think/pretend we climbed up there. Do your own climbing and respect those who gave you legs to do so. GRATEFULNESS is a wonderful quality in a person. Thats on the top of my list. What's on yours? I want my son's coach to be all teacher. I was lucky to have more than one. So is your child. All the Best, John Leonard 17 Morganne McKennan selected as one of the top swimmers in Pacific Swimming for 2012!!! Just remember to take pictures at meets and team events and send them to Larry Lee at lrl95136@yahoo.com. Pictures can be taken with a regular camera, cell phone, Ipod or whatever other device you have handy. On average, I use about 90% of the pictures sent to me from QSS parents, so there is a very good chance your picture will make it in. Also, please feel free to contact me if you have an idea that you think should be included in the newsletter or if your swimmer is interested in being featured as part of the monthly "In the Spotlight" section.
