Isaiah Thomas – a truly
revolutionary printer
Today, the name Isaiah Thomas reminds
some of the professional basketball
player, but the Thomas name is also
highly significant in both American and
printing history. Isaiah Thomas was a
printing pioneer and revolutionary in
Colonial America.
Old “No 1”
A true rags-to-riches, self-made
individual, at one time Thomas had as
many as 12 presses in his Boston,
MA shop, which came to be
described by British forces as
a "sedition factory". Like many
Colonists, Thomas wanted to
throw off British rule and used
his printing expertise to spread

the word about what he and his
fellow revolutionaries considered unfair treatment
by the Crown.
Thomas wrote, designed, printed and
distributed some of America's first recruitment
advertising, encouraging young men to take up
arms and win the battle for independence. He's
credited with crafting such forceful headlines as:
"Americans!...Liberty or Death!...Join or Die!"
In April of 1775, Thomas was forced to
secretly ship his prize printing press, "No. 1," across
the Charles River to safe haven in Worcester, MA.
A 40-mile journey, the move avoided seizure by
British authorities, as rebel activity was seriously
percolating in New England.
Thomas survived the Revolutionary
War, went on to become a prosperous printer in

DIGITAL PRINTING

Beyond color and quantity you might
be happy to find out that digital
printing ranks high on quality and
gives exceptional results for just
about any project that can be
printed conventionally.

film, no plates, needs much less setup sheets and presses can normally
run with just one operator.
Paper selection is also limited since most
sheets require special surface treatment. Happily,
standard papers can be digitally printed including
offset and coated in both text and cover weights
–– even label papers and recycled “eco-friendly”
sheets.
While today’s true digital presses can only
print a sheet that’s 12” x 18”, multiple-page booklets
can be done efficiently as 4-page signatures and
saddle-stitched, perfect or Wire-O bound.

My personal story, Part III
Boston and lived well into his 80's. Thomas, among
other things, was a visionary. He founded the
Antiquarian Society to preserve significant items
for future generations. Old No. 1 was eventually
bequeathed to the Society by Thomas in an effort
to preserve a piece of technology that proved so
vital in wartime.
While reliable in its operation, Old No.
1 consisted of a free-standing, heavy wooden
frame and essentially was not that different from
the machine created by Johannes Gutenberg, the
inventor of printing, some three centuries before.
Two heavy beams, one below the
carriage, one above the bar, delivered pressure
to a screw when the bar was pulled. The pressure
was distributed across the paper's surface and
type by the "platen", a rectangular piece, usually
After three years part-time at Triboro Press in
Queens, things changed dramatically. It began with

recovering somewhat after

recuperation at home in East
Elmhurst.
Of course the plumbing

founded suffered under

closed. He found work with a
private contractor for several years but he never
was the same.
In 1959 there was an opportunity for
a lifestyle change and a job for Dad in New
Hampshire. The Portsmouth Naval Base needed
experienced plumbers. It sounded like a change
for the better, so after the Queens house sold, we
started packing.
I don’t remember how, but Dad found this
house for rent just across the Piscataqua River in
York Beach, Maine. I do remember it had a coalfired furnace in the basement! And not far away
was a creek that became a playground for my sister
and me. It was in this very humble setting that the
Lavalle Family started its short-lived surburban life
in New England.
With the loss of the business, Dad’s
setback and the move to a new state, the family
needed all the financial help it could get. I was
fifteen years old when I got my second printing job
at Randall Press, a Portsmouth printer in the heart
of town.
Underage, I applied for “working papers”
and started work for Ralph Atwell every Saturday
and weekdays after classes at York Beach High
School. It was here that my printing abilities would
broaden and where I would endure one of the most
traumatic events of my life.

mahogany, lashed by cord to the hooks of a hose,
which housed and directed the press' screw
mechanism.
The press was over six feet tall, some
three feet wide and six feet long. Heavy, it had
to be braced against the ceiling to keep it from
moving when operated. The pressman basically
pulled the press handle in a rowing motion but had
to prop his foot against a brace to get adequate
pressure. Man-powered, when running at peak
efficiency, such a press could produce about 250
sheets per hour.
While Old No. 1 remains preserved as a
symbol of another age, the ideas it helped spread
are alive in the hearts of all good people yearning
to breathe free.
