Dear Families,
I hope your new year is off to a great start! As January ends we celebrate “half-way day” at
school. We are very proud of what we have accomplished in the first half of the year and excited about the
challenges and opportunities the second half will bring. Much of our mid-year benchmarking has been
completed and our teachers are busy working on 20 week report cards. This year we are working on an
initiative with our students – “Leaders of Their Own Learning.” The basis of these practices is student
goal setting and data analysis of their achievement using various measures. At the beginning of the year
we asked students to set goals for themselves in academic areas. As the year progresses we are sharing
with students their individual results on STAR Testing, Math and ELA interim assessments, as well as their
Fountas and Pinnell reading level. Please be sure to ask your child about his/her progress toward the goals
they have set for themselves. Encouragement from family and friends to persevere is always helpful when
work becomes challenging. Positive praise and assistance with homework can make a big difference for
your child. 
As in the past, February will serve as our reading challenge month. Our Reading Committee
has planned a school wide “Rev Up for Reading Race” between the classes. Each class has designed a
race car on the track pictured above. Students will be tracking time spent reading throughout the month. In
addition, our Reading Spirit Week will take place February 29th – March 4th. Each day of that week will
be special with a unique “dress-up” theme for students and staff. Here is a sneak peek at the daily themes:
Monday, Feb. 29th: Silly Sock Day
Tuesday, Mar. 1st: Dress Like A Teacher (Your Reading Mentor!)
Wednesday, Mar. 2nd: Flannel Day
Thursday, Mar. 3rd: Twin Day
Friday, Mar. 4th: Dress Like Your Pet or Favorite Animal
At the end of the week we will come together for a special assembly in honor of Dr. Seuss’
birthday. We are all looking forward to the events scheduled during this week and thank the Reading
Committee for their efforts!
Sincerely,
Brooke L. Reid

STORY TIME FOR TOTS
The
Parishville-Hopkinton
Teachers’
Association held a story hour for children age 3
through 2nd grade during the month of January. In
January Mr. and Mrs. VanLeuven served as guest
readers. They are pictured on the right.
Please remember that Story Time for Tots
is held in the P.H.C.S. Kindergarten Room on the
3rd Tuesday of each month (except in February
when it will be held on February 9th) from 6:007:00 p.m. The children enjoy wonderful stories,
crafts, songs, games, and a snack. Children who
attend will receive a free book each month
provided by the Parishville-Hopkinton Parent
Boosters.

News from Our 6th Grade
Mr. VanLeuven and Miss Corcoran’s Homerooms
Mr. VanLeuven’s Science classes have been exploring the properties of different liquids- water,
soapy water, corn syrup, cooking oil and rubbing alcohol. They have been experimenting with the
cohesiveness and adhesiveness of these liquids and how to tell the difference between the two. They
have also been examining the phenomenon of surface tension and finding different ways surface tension
can be broken- dropping rubbing alcohol into a Petri dish filled with colored water and dropping soapy
water into a Petri dish with water and baby powder.
While the students are “Looking at Liquids” in Science, expressions and equations have been the
topic of the day for the 6th graders in Math. The students have been reasoning with and representing
expressions using variables and focusing on how to create equivalent expressions using the distributive
property.
ELA classes are working in Module 2, exploring “rules to live by” through the novel Bud, Not
Buddy, analyzing the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs at Stanford University in 2005 and the
poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling.
Social Studies classes are examining human civilizations from the early hominids to the Roman
Empire.

Beautiful People Awards
We have recognized 17 people already
during this school year who have so generously
shared a very special gift – their hair! That is really
wonderful! We are so PANTHER PROUD! If you
have cut and donated your hair to a charity,
please make sure your teacher knows about it. If
possible, we would also love a digital photo! We
are recognizing the following people this month
with a “Beautiful/Amazing Person” award for their
caring gifts:
Emma Malette (3rd Grade)
News from Ms. Cotey’s
Kindergarten
Our class has finished up our unit on
Stories! The kindergarteners were hard at work
learning about the characters, plot, and setting of
the stories we read. All of our kindergarteners did a
fantastic job of naming the characters in our stories,
describing the setting, and discussing the events of
the stories we read. One of the famous and familiar
stories our kindergarteners read was “Goldilocks
and the Three Bears”. Below is a picture that Karter
Norquest created which includes the characters and
shows the setting of the story!
Auryn Vangellow (3rd Grade)
Jayce Shantie (High School)
Thank you for being so generous and caring!
We are so proud of you!
*Interesting hair fact: Hair is the fastest growing tissue
in the body. The only thing that grows faster is bone
marrow!
News from Ms. Casey’s Reading
Room
Before Christmas vacation, the Reading Room
had a very special visitor! Ms. Rose Rivezzi came in to
read and create a craft with students. We were so happy
to see her and listen to her Christmas story. The students
made origami bookmarks and star pendants to go along
with the story.
Don’t forget about The Book Store!! Buy a book
for 25 cents or trade a used book!
Please keep up the great work reading at home
nightly in order to build reading stamina!
