CLIFF DIVE CEREMONY
AT PU’U KEKA’A, BLACK ROCK
Ancient and Modern Hawaiians believe that Pu`u Keka`a is one of
three `uhane lele, sacred places where souls leap from Earth into
their ancestral spirit land as they transition from the living in to the
netherworld. It is believed that only a person with great mana or
spiritual strength, can enter that realm and return unscathed.

King Kahekili, nicknamed “The Thunderer”, who ruled the islands
of Maui and O`ahu for many decades and lived in Ka`anapali for
most of his ruling years, proved his bravery b y j u m p i n g f r o m
P u ’ u K e k a ’ a a n d r e t u r n i n g t o s h o r e u n harmed. A master of
the ancient Hawaiian sport of lele kawa or cliff diving, he performed
other legendary athletic feats by leaping from heights as high as 300
to 400 feet and plunging into the ocean and fresh water pools
below in various locations around the islands. Kahekili, “King of
the Spirit Leap” earned unwavering loyalty and admiration b y h i s
people; and his warriors, who personified his courage, determination
and ferocity, were respected and feared throughout all of the
Hawaiian Islands.
In honor of the Hawaiian royalty that once called Ka`anapali home,
t he night ly t r a dit ion of t orc h l i ghti ng and cl i ff di vi ng i s s ti l l
honored today. Shortly before sunset each evening, a young
warrior dressed in the traditional malo or loincloth, sets torches
aflame around the majestic grounds surrounding the Sheraton Maui
Resort & Spa. The story of King Kahekili and Pu`u Keka`a is told
at The Cliff Dive Bar as the warrior jour neys across the white
sands of Ka`anapali Beach, lighting the torches set on the crest
of Black Rock. He traces an ancient path to the tip of Pu’u Keka’a
where he offers his torch and flower lei, lifting it to the sky in
all four directions, paying homage to the nature, spirits and life
around him. He completes his journey with a dive off Black Rock,
as Kahekili once did himself centuries ago.
We kindly ask for a service charge of 18% for parties of 6 or more
which will be automatically added to your final bill.
