DEAR READERS
More than a year has passed since I assumed my role as General Manager of
MAHLE Clevite – and for both good and bad reasons – it has been a memorable year. We have seen further consolidation in our industry and we have
witnessed new ideas both succeed and fail.
The engine parts Aftermarket right now is filled with survivors; the dynamic of
this business has changed significantly in the last few months – not to mention the last few years. More changes are coming – changes that will affect
everyone in both the distribution and manufacturing sectors. Our job as the
leading manufacturer in the industry is to stay ahead of these changes, capitalize on organizational strengths, and provide products and services that meet
our customer needs.
Few could have predicted ten years ago that we would be in the midst of the
energy crisis we are in right now. The dramatic shift from large sport utility
vehicles to more efficient hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles happened virtually overnight. Auto manufacturers foresaw the shift on the horizon – but they
could not predict the speed of change in North America.
The North American situation is not without precedent. European and Asian
manufacturers have faced these challenges for decades and were forced long
ago to develop vehicles to better fit the market. These lessons serve as a
guide to help North American manufacturers adapt quickly in these changing
times.

The same is true for the Aftermarket – change provides opportunity. Information and logistics management have transformed the way we do business now
and for the future. Capabilities such as barcodes and EDI were thought to be
luxuries just a few years ago now are deemed essential components of business. The ability to plan five or 10 years out is crucial to business success, but
equally vital is the ability to react to changing markets – identify the needs of
our customers and provide true solutions. Timing is everything, and changes
in the market require that we as manufacturers and distributors must change
to maintain stability.
Certainly as a manufacturer we provide products to the market for consumption. The product is not just engine parts and filters; things like brand recognition, customer and technical service, data management, and availability
are key components of the product as well. This concept is not lost despite
changes made to the infrastructure at MAHLE Clevite – these changes were
all designed to provide optimum service to our customer base in the face of
financial challenges unlike any we have ever encountered. You will read later
in this issue about changes coming to the MAHLE Clevite brand portfolio – but
nothing will change in terms of the quality and service that we provide.
The success of any organization hinges on its ability to meet customer needs
and accomplish organizational objectives. While they are separate, both are
equally vital to success and longevity regardless of the industry. This furthers
the point about the delicate balance – if an organization dismisses economic
objectives in lieu of customer needs, it cannot survive financially. Likewise, if
an organization is so focused on the top line, it is bound to forget that meeting
the needs of customers is paramount to a successful bottom line.
We exercise these principles in running our business, yet our enterprise will
fail without the financial stability of our customers. In an era where terms like
“partnership” and “relationship” are thrown about as a catch phrase, they are
at the heart of our operation. We are 100% committed to acting in the best
interest of our customers, while maintaining the direction to ensure our survival
through this changing business climate – and long into the future.

Jones participates in AAIA eForum
Jesse Jones (left) and Cameron Evans of Red Line Synthetic Oil (right)
The Aftermarket eForum has evolved into the “must attend” event for IT professionals throughout the industry. 2008 marks the eighth year of the event – and
it continues to grow. Nearly 300 attendees from across the Aftermarket gathered in Chicago from July 14 – 16 and listened to presentations, roundtables,
and participated in discussions spanning eCommerce and supply chain technology solutions. MAHLE Clevite defines what a technologically cutting-edge
company should be; therefore the organization was well represented both on
stage and in the audience.
Amid presentations from many in the industry, including an AAIA study release
on Telematics, MAHLE Clevite Marketing Manager, Jesse Jones participated
in a roundtable discussion focusing on industry standards. The discussion hit
on many issues facing the Aftermarket – but most notable among them was
the call for all Aftermarket companies to adhere to industry standards. Data
formats have long been an issue for Aftermarket companies and electronic
communication to Aftermarket customers. The sooner that companies adhere
to Data standards governed by the industry, the sooner the industry can move
forward in addressing other issues important to customers.
All Ideal Supply Machine shops utilize the functions that the MAHLE Clevite
website and mahlecleviteorder.com offer to efficiently service their customer
base. They offer complete machine shop services on Agricultural, Industrial,
Marine, Performance, and Light Duty vehicles. As well they provide the most
diversification of any machine shop in Canada by offering radiator repair, hydraulics, reel Grinding, specialized fabricating with aluminum welding, and balancing services.
TWO GUYS GARAGE GETS SOME FAST VISITORS
Earlier this year, the MAHLE Engine Builder Showdown team invaded the Two
Guys Garage along with 2008 Showdown Champions Dennis Borem and
Darrell Hoffman from pme Engines in Mooresville, NC. Borem and Hoffman lit
up the engine building world last May by setting a new record en route to their
Championship and their names engraved for the second consecutive year on
the Randy Dorton Memorial Trophy. Their record performance of 15 minutes
and 59 seconds captivated the live audience at NASCAR Technical Institute in
Mooresville – and they brought their incredible skill to the garage to show their
stuff.
Not quite sure what they were getting into, Two Guys’ Sam and Bryan showed
no fear in challenging the Champs to a head-to-head showdown of engine
building prowess. The resulting contest was the stuff of legend as it was a
mismatch of epic proportions. The exhibition provided a setting where MAHLE
staff had the opportunity with the Two Guys to touch on many of the features
that set MAHLE products apart from the competition.
For years MAHLE Clevite has been on the leading edge of data compliance,
and through many initiatives within the organization – this commitment will
continue as a priority.
IDEAL SUPPLY’S SUCCESSFUL SHOPS
Ideal Supply is a distributor of Automotive, Electrical, and Industrial supplies
throughout Central Ontario. Corporately based in Listowel Ontario, Ideal is a
proud associate member of NAPA Auto Parts, and services their customers
with 25 strategically located stores. This includes nine machine shops at various store locations. Ideal Supply’s Listowel machine shop was North America’s
first ISO 9002 engine rebuilding centre as well as the first Canadian company
to be awarded the “Machine Shop of the Year” award by the North American
machine shop industry.
Founded in 1926, Ideal Supply is proud to be a winner of Canada’s 50 Best
Managed Companies Beginning as a manufacturer of bread molding machines, by the 1940s the company had become a diversified wholesaler and
retailer of automotive parts and supplies. By the 1960s, Ideal had opened five
locations and had developed an aggressive group of professionals to groom
the business in their trading areas. In the late 1960s, they moved to their current location which houses their corporate offices, master warehouse, counter
sales and machine shop. Additions to the facility in the 1970s and 1990s were
necessary to allow Ideal to create sufficient space to service its customer base
with over 80,000 SKUs that the company now distributes to over 10,000 customers.
Sam Memmolo & Bryan Fuller, Two Guys Garage Hosts
Mixed in with highlights of their Championship performance, Borem and
Hoffman proved why they are the best there is. In fact, they not only finished
their engine and fired it, but still had time to come back and help Sam and
Bryan with their motor. What followed made for great television as though it
did start and run – a surprising twist occurred for an event that was a first for
the ten year old competition.
The event was great fun for all involved and both sides shook hands and shared
notes on the first time experience for Sam and Bryan.
In case you missed it the first time around on Speed Channel, check local listings for the next time the MAHLE Engine Builder Showdown episode of Two
Guys Garage will air.

everyone loves their
Own brand
… BUT IT HAS TO FIT A GLOBAL BRAND STRATEGY
Success in business today depends on the ability to stay on the leading
edge of technology; but trends and brands also play an important role.
That in mind, MAHLE recently conducted a comprehensive global brand
review for our Aftermarket business, as with the acquisitions of the past
24 months the number of the brands has increased significantly. This
sometimes leads to confusion with our customers, but also increases
the complexity of our internal process in manufacturing, administration,
sales and marketing to a point where it economically does not make
sense to continue with the large number of different brands. The goal
was to come to a simpler and lean approach and concentrate on those
brands which have long term positive and sustainable value for the
MAHLE Group and its Aftermarket business on a global scale.
An integral piece of our brand review involved hundreds of customer interviews
to establish a feeling for our current brand strengths and weaknesses. MAHLE
experts from the Aftermarket business segment and our communication/
marketing departments assembled to determine the most effective brand
strategy for the future. Several recommendations and options were considered
to select customers to be involved and to ensure viability of the new strategy.
The first and most important decision was set from the very beginning:
The MAHLE Original brand will become the one and only brand to be used
worldwide in all regions for all products in the MAHLE product portfolio.
The MAHLE Group, as the worldwide leader in engine technology and its
components and systems, provides the technology, the human and financial
resources to support of global Aftermarket business. MAHLE Original will be
the future leading brand for all of our products – even in regions where in the
past the MAHLE Original brand did not provide a historical track record in
terms of visibility and presence.
A new MAHLE Original logo has been developed, based on its historic look and
footprint in order to provide for great anticipation and excitement for what is on
the horizon. MAHLE Original will define the best in technology and service in all
regions of the world. It capitalizes on the strength of the MAHLE organization
and the global expertise while focusing on serving customer needs.
MAHLE Original Branded Products
The key component of the MAHLE Clevite brand range is Clevite engine
bearings. Since the formation of MAHLE Clevite in March 2007, some
customers have expressed concern that changes would arise relating to the
engine bearing brand. No such changes are on the horizon. However, in the
future, an additional brand of light vehicle engine bearings will be sold in North
America under MAHLE Original brand.
The Clevite brand will also become the future face of all American heavy duty
engine parts such as pistons, valve train components, ancillary components
and piston rings. As a consequence, the Clevite brand will become a worldwide
brand as our American heavy duty customers like Cummins and Caterpillar
operate also on a worldwide base. A shift of this nature ensures the long-term
viability of the Clevite brand.
The MAHLE Filter brand will transition to the MAHLE Original brand for both
light vehicle and heavy duty filters. Also under the MAHLE Original identity are
all light vehicle engine components like pistons, piston rings, bearings, valve
train and ancillary components.
Over the next months, the new MAHLE Original and Clevite brands will replace
the Perfect Circle brand throughout North America. While it is with some grief
that we announce the transition away from Perfect Circle branded piston rings,
the opportunities provided by the new MAHLE Original and Clevite branded
heavy duty piston rings call for a new beginning. Combining the global
resources of MAHLE with what made Perfect Circle a piston ring leader for
over 100 years, ensures MAHLE Original will be the ring of choice for years to
come.
Customers will see a very minimal change in terms of transitioning from Perfect
Circle to the new MAHLE Original and Clevite piston ring lines – and what
changes do exist, will be much better.
More changes may develop moving forward, but all MAHLE Clevite customers
can be sure that if any changes come, it is with the best interest of customers
moving forward. That logic is the nucleus of what a step like this is about –
affecting change in a positive direction provides customers the tools to achieve
success.

World record on the bonneville salt flats west of the rocky mountains.
JCB from Rocester in England makes backhoe loaders, telescopic
handlers, wheeled loaders, Fastrac tractors, rough terrain fork
lifts, articulated dump trucks, mini and micro excavators – in short,
construction and agricultural equipment of a high standard. Recently,
JCB has also produced records. Speed world records. With diesel
technology, to be more precise with two modified JCB 444 diesel
engines from their product range, placed in a unique type of vehicle:
the JCB DIESELMAX or also “The World’s Fastest Diesel”.
In 2006, the JCB engineers started
an ambitious project, quite unlike
any type of farming or construction machinery. The basis: 2 diesel
engines from the series production, which were tuned to produce
together 1,103 kW or 1,500 hp.
This was combined with the idea
of a high-speed racer with brake
parachute in dragster fashion – and
the challenge of an existing speed
world record for diesel propelled
vehicles of 378 km/h.
The rules for the record contenders: the driver takes the car through
the so-called flying mile, in which
the distance of one mile has to be driven twice within one hour – and the mean
value of the average speeds becomes the record ... or maybe not.
The first hurdle for the team was the construction of a body shell that can cope
with the aero dynamic demands of this extreme speed. This was exclusively
designed and tested on a computer – and that for two reasons. First, the wind
pressure of the desired speed started to have significant effects on the vehicle,
especially at the contact areas between wheels and ground, which is here the
salt at the bottom of the extremely flat Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA that
dried-up about 14,000 years ago. This type of speed cannot be simulated in
any wind tunnel. The second reason is the size of the vehicle – it is more than
nine meters long and therefore simply too big for a wind tunnel test. And a
scaled-down model would have distorted the measuring results.
Then, everything had to be put into practice – in the form of a space frame
chassis and a driver’s cockpit made from carbon fibre, with one engine in
front and the other engine behind it. The advantage of this design solution is
optimum weight distribution in the vehicle, with optimum all-round visibility and
engine positions that offer probably the best chances of accident prevention.
This resulted in a unique cigarshaped specimen with extremely
aerodynamic contour, with a control
unit without steering quality, without
wings, however, with 2 modified series engines that can provide about
five times their normal power.
Finally, it was time for the race. At
9:37, local time, the first run was
started. In the cockpit sat Andy
Green, a former Royal Air Force pilot.
The JCB DIESELMAX reached an
average speed of 588.7 km/h, despite the fact that the engine power
was automatically reduced because
the cooling system became overheated. In the second run, Andy
Green raced the vehicle with an average speed of 540.3 km/h through the flying mile – and this, despite applying the brake accidentally already before the
end of the course. The old record of 378 km/h was broken and re-established
with 563.4 km/h.
This success demonstrates impressively the potential of the new JCB 444
diesel engines – the series version of the 4-cylinder engine with 4.4 litres delivers just 200 hp (147 kW). Also MAHLE Powertrain can be proud of this world
record: the block, cylinder head and bedplate of the series engines are machined in the plant at Wellingborough, England – with about 35,000 to 40,000
sets annually.

The Hendrick history
Mention the topic of NASCAR® domination and one name comes to mind –
Hendrick. Hendrick Motorsports prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary,
and is poised to do it in style. Every year since the inception of the NASCAR
Chase for the Sprint® Cup, Hendrick Motorsports has placed multiple teams
in the field contending for a NASCAR Championship. The culmination of last
year’s battle between Hendrick teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon
ending in Jimmie Johnson’s second consecutive Series Championship placed
an exclamation point on an organization steeped in tradition and excellence.
today. Five people worked full-time that first year, in a 5,000 square foot
facility. Today, Hendrick Motorsports consists of over 600 people working on
a campus covering 100 acres and multiple buildings designed to efficiently
build championship race cars from the ground up – and build them well. In the
24-year history of Hendrick Motorsports, 11 NASCAR Champions have been
crowned, with an unprecedented seven of them in NASCAR’s top series. Just
last year, the organization surpassed 200 NASCAR victories – enough to put
Rick Hendrick at the top of the heap among owners.
NASCAR has evolved many times since the mid-1980s. The points system has
changed multiple times – even the cars on the track have changed. From the
vehicles of the ‘80s that essentially were “stock cars” to the one-time Car of
Tomorrow, now the Car of Today. Hendrick has found success in all of them.
In fact it was a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet that won the very first Car of
Tomorrow race in March, 2007.
MAHLE Clevite products are in every engine produced by Hendrick Engines.
Clevite® engine bearings, Perfect Circle® piston rings and Victor Reinz® gaskets
play an integral part of the success of Hendrick Motorsports. An organization
that demands excellence in everything will not take a chance on engine parts
from someone else.
An aerial view of the Hendrick Motorsports complex.
In founding All Star Racing in 1984, Rick Hendrick instilled a drive to succeed
from day one, and realized it in his Hendrick Motorsports. A self-proclaimed
“Gearhead”, Rick Hendrick had the unique perspective of combining a very
successful business mind that blossomed in his network of dealerships with
a mechanical knowledge inspired by his father – Papa Joe Hendrick. This mix
paid dividends immediately as Geoff Bodine drove the #5 Hendrick car to three
pole positions, three victories, and a ninth place finish in the Championship
standings.
A few years later Hollywood sought out the expertise of NASCAR’s top team.
Rick Hendrick worked as a Technical Advisor to the film Days Of Thunder
starring Tom Cruise. The film was the first to offer the modern NASCAR as the
background theme. The film brought in over $80 million in the box office, and
featured several paint schemes highlighting Hendrick’s City Chevrolet.
That Hendrick Motorsports is far removed from the one in Concord, NC

In the same way that Rick Hendrick pioneered technical excellence, the same
dedication has led to success in people. In front of the thousands of Hendrick
employees at the network of Hendrick dealerships nationwide to the hundreds
of Hendrick Motorsports employees – the success of both organizations depend on the people that work there. In Concord, Hendrick Motorsports employs the foremost innovators in engine and chassis design. These men and
women work every day to be the best at what they do, just as the best on the
track work every weekend to bring glory to the unsung heroes in the shop.
Hendrick truly has the best behind the scenes and in front – the roster of
drivers leading Hendrick cars to Victory Lane is a veritable “Who’s Who” of
NASCAR legends.
In 2009, Hendrick Motorsports will have arguably the most talented NASCAR
team ever assembled. With Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson who possess six
NASCAR Cup championships between the two of them and not to mention
NASCAR’s biggest star Dale Earnhardt Jr., combined with the addition of Mark
Martin next year.
At age 59, Rick Hendrick has survived tragedy and triumph in NASCAR and
shows no signs of slowing down. The organization he founded on hard work
and determination has taken those goals to a new level. Certainly many factors
are involved in winning NASCAR races and championships – many of them are
out of human control – but one thing is certain, nobody will outwork the team
at Hendrick Motorsports.

Movin’ on up with Kalitta Motorsports
Kalitta Motorsports, founded by Conrad “Connie” Kalitta who raced in his
first final round in 1963, is an elite mainstay in the ranks of professional drag
racing. Kalitta started in drag racing first as a driver, followed by a car owner/
crew chief, then as owner of one of drag racing’s most popular teams. Four
dragsters call the Kalitta shop in Ypsilanti, Michigan home – three are referred
to as top fuel dragsters, the fourth as a funny car.
Scott Kalitta, Connie’s son, was killed in a racing accident earlier this year while
driving the DHL-sponsored funny car. The accident focused attention again on
the safety of cars accelerating from zero to over 300 MPH in just 1,000 feet
and in less than four seconds. As a result of the accident, numerous safety
improvements are being implemented, ultimately defining
the legacy of Scott Kalitta the way it did for Dale Earnhardt
Sr. in NASCAR. Kalitta is determined to continue Funny
Car racing and has returned the DHL Funny Car to the
track with another driver, Jeff Arend.
In 1995, before he made the trip halfway around the world to the United
States, Dave Grubnic was a 35-year old regional manager for Ford Motor
Company in his hometown of Brisbane, Australia. He enjoyed his job, but he
was more than willing to trade in his coat and tie for a fire suit and a helmet
and a chance to drive Top Fuel dragsters in the NHRA. Grubnic took a big
chance and left his homeland to pursue his dream. Having never even been
in the cockpit of a nitro-fueled racecar, he arrived in California slightly over a
decade ago and started his lofty drag racing pursuits. In early 2004, Grubnic
landed his dream rail ride when he was hired by drag racing icon, Kalitta. In
2004, he won the prestigous Budweiser Shootout in Las Vegas, becoming
only the fourth driver in the special event’s 20-year history to win its $100,000
prize in his first attempt, and he picked up an emotional and long overdue first
NHRA national event win in May, 2005 in Topeka, Kansas
to become the first non-native North American to win a
Top Fuel trophy.
A Magna Cum Laude graduate from Wheaton College
with a degree in economics, Hillary Will quickly decided
a career in racing was more to her liking than a career in
finance. She acquired her Top Alcohol Dragster license
and quickly established a new team with her father, Steve.
In 2005, Will won one divisional event in two final-round
appearances. She finished sixth in NHRA points nationally, winning the spring NHRA SummitRacing.com national
event in Las Vegas and finishing runner-up at two others
– the Winternationals in Pomona, California, and the Mac
Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana. She finished
Number Two in points in Division Six in 2005.
In addition to the Funny Car, Connie, age 70, owns three
Top Fuel dragsters driven by Hillary Will, David Grubnic
and Doug Kalitta (Connie’s nephew).
Both Connie and Doug manage their own successful airfreight businesses. Connie’s, Kalitta Air, consists of over
20 Boeing 747s and Doug’s Kalitta Charters has more
than 25 small executive size jets in its fleet. Managing
the businesses and racing 24 weekends per year means
they’re on the go almost constantly. Doug and Connie fly
Doug’s Falcon jet with several of the crew on board to the
track, allowing them to arrive at noon on Friday and be
home Sunday evening.
Will moved up to the quickest and fastest NHRA professional class, Top Fuel, in 2006 behind the wheel of a newly
formed team owned by Las Vegas businessman Ken Black and managed by
Kalitta Motorsports. Will notched her first NHRA event win this summer and is
a crowd favorite. The personable Will can usually be found surrounded by fans
whenever she makes track appearances.
Conrad “Connie” Kalitta
Doug Kalitta’s racing career started as a crew member on his Uncle Connie
“the Bounty Hunter” Kalitta’s Top Fuel team. Doug spent most of the 1980s
working for his legendary uncle who now owns his Top Fuel rail ride. In 1990,
Doug began pursuing his open-wheel racing aspirations. He was ARCA/
WWAR Midget Rookie of the Year in 1990 and USAC National Midget Rookie
of the Year in 1991. In 1994, Doug was crowned the USAC National Sprint
Car Champion. He followed his title with runner-up points finishes in 1995 and
1996. When Connie retired from drag racing at the end of the 1997 season,
he asked Doug to put his circle-track career aside and take the controls of his
8,000-horsepower, nitro-fueled rocket-on-wheels. Doug accepted the offer
and has been a perennial NHRA championship contender ever since.
All four of Team Kalitta’s cars run the same 490 cubic inch (8L) engines.
Generating around 8,000 horsepower on nitro-methane takes a toll on both
piston rings and engine bearings – that is why all Team Kalitta cars depend
on engine parts from MAHLE Clevite. The bearings are Clevite “Nitro V” series
and the rings are the Perfect Circle PC479 Plasma Moly.

Surface Anodizing – 3.9L & 5.9L Cummins
Selective surface anodizing prevents micro-welding of aluminum to the rings
in the ring grooves and reduces thermal stress cracking on piston crowns.
This process considers the reduction of material malleability it causes, and
must be applied only after a finite element analysis (FEA) study of the piston to
determine the areas that can benefit from this process and are not subject to
substantial cyclical deformation stress. In other words, it makes pistons better!

filters - the pure truth
category
the
symme-trick
symmetrix® – the new MAHLE air filter in wound technology: intelligent
deisgn for maximum functional density.
Building space is precious – in architecture as well as in automobile manufacturing. However, for design reasons an air filter requires a certain
amount of space – depending on the engine even a significant amount – in order to allow the required air volume to pass through. This means
that an air filter element for commercial vehicles can be of considerable size, depending on the size of the vehicle or engine.
As turbo charged engines allow higher power density and reduced exhaust
emissions they are used more and more. Due to their particular design, the
demand on combustion air and therefore space for the air filter is even higher.
In other words, the engine compartment becomes more and more crowded.
3

The MAHLE air filter designers are faced with the challenge to achieve maximum functional density. In other words, to increase dirt collection capacity, reduce size and increase the time between servicing at the same time. This has
been achieved with a unique solution: away from the widely used star-shaped
filter elements – and towards a main filter element in “wound design” with axial
flow-through that offers exceptionally favorable aerodynamic characteristics.
This wound filter with the name SYMMETRIX® consists of a large number of
filter channels that are closed alternately. The air flows into one channel, moves
through the filter media, which cleans it from dirt, and leaves the filter element
through the adjacent channel in the other direction.

Working Principle of the wound filter:
(1) The contaminated air flows into the channels at the dirty side of the filter.
(2) The air flows through the filter medium and is cleaned from dirt.
(3) The cleaned air leaves the filter element.

category
An additional advantage: in contrast to conventional star-shaped air filter elements, the housing of the SYMMETRIX® filter element does not require additional volume for in-flowing and out-flowing air thanks to the in-line flowthrough principle. The dirt collection capacity can therefore be increased by
more than 2.5 times at the same physical size. The diagrams illustrate the
increase in dirt collection capacity and reduction in required volume for the
same dirt collection.
and the engine – useful for combine-harvesters at harvest for example. The
filter element ensures that no damaging dirt reaches the engine directly via the
intake passage when a filter is replaced in the field.

An additional feature of this complete-filter is the so called pre-cleaner at the
dirty side. Several cyclones (in this example 26, see picture) pre-clean here the
intake air – in a simple but ingenious process: due to small wings, the air is
made to swirl – and the resulting centrifugal forces move the coarser dirt particles from the air flow towards the outside. The accumulated dirt is continuously
moved to the outside through an opening. The pre-cleaner can be washed out
during an inspection or filter change.

As development partner of the automobile and engine industry, MAHLE is
currently in dialog with renowned vehicle manufacturers to prepare the deployment of the SYMMETRIX® in series production.
Thanks to its metal-free design, the filter element can be incinerated completely, allowing environmentally friendly disposal.
FILTER MEDIUM: INNOVATION WITH NANO TECHNOLOGY
However, the performance increase of the new SYMMETRIX® wound filter is
not only due to its special configuration – also in the filter medium no “fiber was
left unturned”. In order to satisfy the high demands, a very thin filter medium
has been developed with extremely high overall collection efficiency. This was
achieved with a lining of nano-fibers. This increases the free flow area and
reduces therefore the pressure loss in the filter. Depending on demands and
applications in commercial vehicles, this medium can also be applied with a
flame retardant impregnation.
ALL IN ONE (MODULAR) SYSTEM
The wound filter is also part of a complete-filter modular system for relevant
applications such as agricultural machines, commercial vehicles or passenger
cars. Matched to specific applications, various modifications are available.
This includes a safety element that is fitted between the actual filter element

Customer
Care centers
When You care enough to stock the very best
The focus of MAHLE Clevite is to deliver product to our customers
at the best possible time in the best possible way. Focusing on that
strategy, we have set up our Customer Care Centers around the United
States and Canada. This is a strategy that allows us to stay at the
forefront of the Automotive Aftermarket industry.
We take pride in delivering to our customers in a timely and deliberate manner;
that is why we have our forward deployed inventory system. Each individual
order is shipped from one of our many locations; depending on the geographical
region the order is placed.
Our electronic ordering system mahlecleviteorder.com, instantly verifies the
“ship to” address of the customer and sends the order from the appropriate
location. Mahlecleviteorder.com offers a wide array of benefits, using an
inventory feature that gives the user easier ordering capabilities from the best
location.
This electronic based tool brings you up to speed with several benefits and
features. The first of these benefits is order tracking. This feature allows the
user to track each shipment after the order has been placed in the system.
By logging in, confidential pricing can be viewed by placing an item into your
cart. The user has the ability to order 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Amongst many other features we also offer robust interchange information
within the system. Those are just a few of the benefits available to you at
mahlecleviteorder.com
What gives our distribution centers the competitive edge? Several factors can
be looked at when answering that question. The first factor is that we have 10
locations between the United States and Canada. This allows our customers
to keep their investment low, because we carry the inventory until it is placed
on their shelf. If the local warehouse does not have the product that is needed,
they can check and pull the inventory from our master warehouse or any of the
other customer care centers. Finally, MAHLE Clevite has 100% ownership in
our warehouses, where our competitors use a fee-based system that does not
allow them to exclusively stock their own product.
MAHLE Clevite rises above expectations by integrating our knowledgeable
staff into our Customer Care Centers. We have many talented individuals with
dedicated years of service in the Automotive Aftermarket industry; this allows
them to use their experience to get the job done right the first time.
We have developed an intricate warehousing system to deliver our products to
the consumer. Through years of hard work and dedication we have empowered
our customers with the ability to purchase our products and fulfill their engine
parts needs.
That’s MAHLE Clevite. That’s our Customer Care Centers.

MAHLE Clevite is ever involved in an ongoing effort to improve our
coverage, resulting in your company being a stronger competitor in
the Automotive Aftermarket.
In that effort MAHLE Clevite has projected to release the first-ever exclusive
light vehicle and mid-range piston catalog in the 4th quarter of 2008. This new
catalog will feature over 200 new piston families and the upgrading of over 550
current piston families using the latest technologies.
These technologies include, but are not limited to: high tech coatings,
compensated ring grooves and anodized piston crowns.
The high tech coatings that MAHLE Clevite uses include dry phosphate, tin
coating and Grafal®; each of these coatings has specific benefits.
To maintain the same performance conditions that were designated by the
manufacturer, attention must be given to the root groove diameter of the ring
groove to match the increase of the piston size – this is what is referred to as
compensated ring grooves. This means the bottom of the ring groove should
be increased in proportion to the piston diameter. Compensated ring grooves
result in better seating, stronger ring lands and a reduction of un-burnt fuel that
would migrate into the void uncompensated grooves.
Selected pistons feature the benefit of anodized crowns. Anodizing is a process
that changes the microscopic texture and crystal structure of the aluminum,
resulting in an increase in hardness, durability and the ability to perform as
required in severe operating conditions.
Always look to MAHLE Clevite for great coverage, the highest quality and the
latest in cutting edge technologies.
Dry phosphate coatings help reduce ring microwelding, tin coating reduces
skirt scuffing and pin galling in cold starts and Grafal®, an anti-friction coating,
reduces drag, cylinder bore wear and piston noise.
