For Art and Architecture

Barely six months have passed since
the closing party of BECon, our biennial
conference that brought together over
250 participants from around the world
to discuss the methods and ideas behind
the glassworking process most readily
identified with Bullseye: kilnforming.
Photo: Jason Quigley.
As I write, this year’s panel of EMERGE
jurors—artist Silvia Levenson, museum
curator Laura Addison and kiln-glass
icon Klaus Moje—are casting their
ballots for the third round of what has
become arguably the world’s premier
competition of kiln-glass for emerging
and early career artists and designers.
First and foremost, Bullseye is a maker
of colored glass, a company started 38
years ago by three art school graduates
with one homebrewed recipe for a
single color—a transparent copper red
catspaw—and the dream to make glass
for other artists.
Photo: Heather Zinger.
Each year these two projects leapfrog
each other, creating such a buzz that we
risk forgetting who we are at heart.
I need this catalog with its eye-dazzling
array of 550+ different colors, color
combinations and textures to remind
me of our roots and our passion: turning
sand into color into light. The rest
of what we do helps to incubate the
creativity behind this making. It is the
culture that supports the color*.

I hope that these colors and these
glasses help to support your creativity. I
hope you enjoy the catalog as much as I
do. Now back to making glass!

Bullseye Glass Company is a manufacturer of colored
and a strong commitment to research, education and
promoting glass art. Since 1974, we’ve collaborated with
artists worldwide with whom we’ve been instrumental
in developing many of the materials and methods at
the core of contemporary kiln-glass. We are based in
Portland, Oregon.
Bullseye Factory
In our state-of-the-art Factory in southeast Portland, skilled Bullseye craftspeople
pour, roll, and shape glass into sheets and other forms five days a week, providing
more than 1,000 different glass products in a sophisticated color palette to artists
worldwide.
Bullseye Research & Education Studios
Adjacent to the Factory in our R & E studios, staff instructors and guest artists
offer lectures, demonstrations and short-term classes year round for students at
all levels. Staff instructors and technicians conduct product tests, provide technical
support to our customers, and assist visiting artists and architects who participate
in our Artist Exchange Program.

Bullseye Glass: What to Expect
COLOR VARIATION
While Bullseye strives for consistent colors, our glass is a
handmade product and colors may vary slightly between
production runs (and from images in this catalog). Some
colors may change slightly upon repeated firing or with
extensive heatwork. We recommend that you test samples of
glass using the same firing cycles and processes to be used in
finished pieces. Bullseye glasses are formulated for fired color.
Unfired glass color may vary.
COLORS THAT STRIKE
In order to provide the largest and most interesting palette
of colors to kiln and torch workers, Bullseye produces some
glasses that appear pale or colorless in the cold form but
which “strike” or mature to target color upon firing.

Unstruck colors on the left. Struck (mature) colors on the
right. Bullseye striking glasses are labeled.
Catalog illustrations indicate which styles differ in color from
cold form to struck form. Keep in mind that struck color may
vary depending on temperature, atmosphere and amount
of heatwork. For example, heating Ruby Red Tint Striker
(001824-0030-F) too rapidly during the initial stages of
a firing cycle can prevent the glass from striking correctly,
resulting in a blue-brown cast (sapphirine effect) instead of a
true ruby red color.
COMPATIBILITY
Bullseye glasses are well known for reliable compatibility.
But understanding the conditions of our factory testing is
important, especially if you are firing glass under unusual or
extreme conditions.
At Bullseye, glasses known to be fairly stable are tested by
firing to a top temperature of 1500°F (815°C) and soaking
for 15 minutes before annealing. Once cooled, these tests
are viewed for stress through polarized light and graded
accordingly. Other glasses known to be less stable are fired
three times with this cycle to insure good performance under
typical multiple fusing and slumping conditions, such as those
used in making a simple plate.
If you are using a heat process that involves an extra-high
temperature or an unusually long firing time, we recommend
that you test the glass again, under the conditions specific to
your project. For instance, imagine that you want to include
some flameworked elements in a kilnformed project. Consider
that flameworking takes glass to temperatures exceeding
factory compatibility tests; also, the compatibility of some
glasses is more sensitive than others to extensive work in
the flame. Therefore, it will be important not to overwork
your glass during flameworking and to test the flameworked
components for compatibility using the full range of
kilnforming processes planned for the finished project.
Some processes that may not immediately appear to exceed
the parameters of the test for compatibility actually do.
Holding some glasses for long times at temperatures around
1400°F (760°C), which is in the devitrification range, can
cause the glass to change dramatically.
Many artists (Klaus Moje, for example) are able to push
Bullseye glass to high temperatures for long times with
exceptionally good results, but their success is insured by their
own testing before making large or complex pieces. Testing is
a wise practice with whatever glass you use. No manufacturer
can guarantee glass to perform as expected under all
imaginable working conditions.

pen and pencil and kilnformed glass
Every day at Bullseye, rugged men scoop molten glass from whitehot furnaces and roll it into glowing flat sheets. This art form is called
“casting glass” and Morgan Madison practiced it for several years
after graduating from Lewis & Clark College with a degree in studio
art and drawing. Manipulating hot Bullseye glass fueled Madison’s
curiosity about kilnforming, and soon he began fooling around with
factory scraps after hours. Then he found himself taking workshops,
including international ones, which fired his imagination and developed
his skills. Today Madison operates his own kiln-glass studio in Portland
and thrives as an artist, influenced by urban and natural landscapes
of the Pacific Northwest. His functional pieces, fine art works and
architectural commissions can be found in galleries and private spaces
as well as collections throughout the Americas.

Black & White
Opaline Striker
000403 a
Even more ethereal than
Translucent White (000243).
Paradoxically, transmitted light
is both softened and made more
fiery, viewed through Opaline. Try
layering with itself or with colors.
Reactive Cloud
000009
Reacts under kiln heat with some
copper-bearing glasses and silver
leaf and foil. Fired on its own, its
whiteness is slightly bluer and
more translucent than White
(000113). Start getting reactions
by reviewing the tips on page 25.
White
000113
For kilnforming and stained glass.
Transmits light in stained glass
applications. More opaque after
firing, but still transmits light.
Translucent White
000243 a
For kilnforming. Perfect for fused
lamp shades. Fires to an even
white, more translucent than
000113. Not suitable for stained
glass: cold sheet may have
irregular white markings.
White Opaque
000013
For kilnforming and stained glass.
Completely opaque before and
after firing. Our brightest white.
Lacy White
000143 a
For stained glass. Choose single
rolled for pattern and maximum
light transmission. Not designed
for kilnforming: when fired,
strikes to an even white with
unpredictable density.
Black
000100
For kilnforming and stained glass.
Opaque, glossy, classic black.
Melts to a uniform surface.
Stiff Black
000101
For roll-ups and kilnforming.
Holds shape well at blowing
temperatures. Not as soft as
Black (000100), and may behave
differently in slumping than Black.
Shee t Gl a ss • Bl a c k a n d Wh i t e
Clear & White Streaky
002130
For kilnforming and stained glass.
Layer over any color to add pale
wisps and tones while retaining
some transparency.
French Vanilla
000137
For kilnforming and stained
glass. Warm with amber tones.
Upon firing, may strike to a
bright dense white, depending
on the kiln conditions. Great for
experimenting. Use on edge to
produce an organic striped pattern.

Many of Joseph Harrington’s kilncast sculptures aim to represent
landscapes of northeastern Scotland and southwestern England—the
rugged coastlines, the colorings of sky and rock, the energies at work.
Harrington accomplishes these pieces in his London studio by eroding
and sculpting ice with salt and then casting the ice as it’s melting.
Using the “lost ice” technique, he transforms liquids into solids, fleeting
moments into permanent forms. We first learned of Harrington in
2006 when he became a finalist for the Bombay Sapphire Prize and a
shortlisted finalist at the 2006 International Festival of Glass curated
by Dan Klein. He had just completed the MA in glass at the Royal
College of Art. Since then his work has been broadly published and
shown internationally, and he has produced some large-scale public
and private commissions using technical innovations that promise to
influence future gallery work.

Judy Collins of Lakewood, Colorado, started her career as a graphic
designer, but then she took a class in stained glass and got hooked on
making things. In 1976 she opened a leaded glass studio and, on the
side, began experimenting with fusing Bullseye glasses—several years
before Bullseye started manufacturing tested-compatible products.
“That was an expensive hobby,” Collins says. Many things broke, but she
kept trying anyway, and at the same time she also began practicing a
variety of glassworking methods. Today Collins and her husband, Dale,
own and operate Collins Architectural Glass, offering an exquisite range
of options to their residential, commercial and public art clients.

Why Choose Bullseye for Casting?
Bullseye billets can be an excellent choice for anyone concerned about
safety and working with lead crystal. Our billets are also significantly
lighter than lead crystal and may be more economical to use. (In
comparing costs, remember that full lead crystal glasses weigh as much
as 45% more. The specific gravity of Bullseye glass is about 2.5.) Bullseye
offers sheet glasses, frits and powders that can be combined with billets
to achieve highly individual results. And our ever-expanding color selection
is simply unsurpassed.
Each Bullseye billet measures approximately 5” x 10” x 0.75” (127 x 254 x
19 mm) and weighs about 3.4 lb (1.54 kg). For projects requiring billets to
have exactly matching colors, we suggest you request glasses produced
from the same melt/date.
These cast and coldworked wedges show how the 001900 tint colors appear in thin and thick
sections. Dimensions: 8.875 x 6 x 2.75 inches (each).

Lisa Becker
exploring the territory, paving the way
Five years ago when Lisa Becker wanted to move beyond the basics
of kilnforming, she couldn’t find advanced classes in the St. Louis,
Missouri, area. So she studied on her own using books and Bullseye
technical publications, kept careful records, and traveled out of the
region to take workshops when she could. Today Becker is a fulltime
award-winning artist with her own kiln-glass center, Art Glass Array,
where she provides a wide range of classes for beginning to advanced
students from throughout Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. Recently
she expanded her studio to include a second-story gallery and her
teaching practice to include a college-level course in collaboration with
nearby Lindenwood University.

Tubes of colors made with gold contain fewer stringers, to
reduce unit price. For example, a tube of gold-bearing 1 mm
Cranberry Pink (001311) contains approximately 87 pieces;
a tube of 2 mm contains approximately 33 pieces. Stringers
are available in bulk quantities of ten pounds (4.5 kg) per box.

Rod Grades
Bullseye rods are graded as either F
(recommended for both kilnwork and
torchwork) or T (recommended for
torchwork only). Since all Bullseye
rods are recommended for torchwork,
the F and T grades are relevant only
to kilnworkers. On these pages, only
T grade rods are marked *. Unmarked
rods are F grade.

Most Bullseye rods can be fired in the kiln, and doing
so can produce unique textures and patterns and
even lenses and optical effects. Kilnforming with
rod methods are being pioneered and taught in
Bullseye’s Research & Education Studios. To learn
more see the FAQ, What Can I Expect from Bullseye
Rods, in the Education section of bullseyeglass.com.

Sample Sets & Updates
For when catalog images won’t do, and you need to see our actual glass in your own light.
Color Consistency
While Bullseye glass is widely known for consistency, it is a handmade product
and slight variations from run to run are normal and expected. Our samples are
selected to represent our middle range of surface color, texture and transmitted
light qualities. Glasses ordered may vary slightly. In the case of glass styles
that change appearance after firing, we choose samples as close as possible to
the color achieved with a full fuse firing at the Bullseye Factory. Fired color may
vary with firing cycles and kilns. This is especially true for “striking” glasses,
which change color dramatically upon firing. (Striking glasses are prefired and
labeled in our sheet glass sample sets.)
How to Use Samples
Samples are selected strictly for visual reference. They may or may not be
Bullseye Compatible.

that meet users’ specific needs, at lower
prices than are possible with our full Master

Judith Finn Conway
At home in the world of art making
In 2009, Judith Conway joined nineteen fellow artists for a kilnforming
residency at Pilchuck Glass School and their work resulted in the Act
2 exhibition, currently traveling to museums and kiln-glass centers
in the western United States. This is just one example of the many
ways Conway has continually enriched and extended her studio
practice since glass kilnforming became her fulltime focus in 2001.
That’s when, with artist Kevin O’Toole, she co-created Vitrum Studio
in suburban Washington DC, now one of the best privately owned
teaching programs for kiln-glass in the country. Today Conway teaches
extensively, hosts respected visiting artists of national and international
stature, refreshes her curriculum with considerable research into new
methods and products—and applies these influences and more to her
own work at the kiln.

Bear market > Bull fashion
If you think it’s hard to start a business in today’s economy, just talk
to the three art school graduates who founded Bullseye in 1974.
Dan Schwoerer, Ray Ahlgren, and Boyce Lundstrom almost couldn’t
have picked a worse time to set up a factory. The U.S. was in a deep
recession. Stagflation was 11 percent and the prime lending rate was
a whopping 21 percent. Now-CEO Schwoerer says, “Times were so
tough that being in business even for a year or two was something to
celebrate.” And that’s exactly what the founders did by designing a shirt
for themselves in 1975 that boasted “Bullseye Hand Cast Glass, since
1974”. The joke still gets grins every time Schwoerer comes to work
wearing his original company tee.
(Above) Dan Schwoerer and Bullseye casters, circa 1975-76, testing a new
device designed to distribute gobs of hot glass uniformly across the length of
the roller to produce rectangular sheets.
Replicas of the first Bullseye t-shirt are now available for the first time ever. See

(two on top, two on bottom) for panels up to 6 mm thick and up to 10 lbs (4.5
kg). Or use one or two L-hooks to secure a shelf-supported panel at the top.
We recommend screwing into studs or a wooden board for strength.
