Calvin Christian Families Opening
Convocation on Sunday, August 30, at
4:30 p.m. at the high school.
We will gather outside for a worship
service on the lawn or in the gym, if it rains. We ask that
families bring lawn chairs and blankets. Following the
service we encourage families to pack picnics and to
spend some time in fellowship. At 6:30pm we invite all
families who wish to join a prayer walk to meet at the
flagpoles of both the elementary and the middle
school/high school campuses to pray over all the spaces
where students and teachers will love, learn and serve this
year. We would love for the whole community to be join in
this joyous occasion!
FRESHMEN MIXER
Our Freshmen Mixer is being planned for
Thursday, September 3, starting with
Orientation. Freshmen should dress for
fun and games at school. The Mixer will
finish around 2:00 p.m. Lunch is provided.
A parent-signed permission slip is required
and will be included in an upcoming mailing in August.
STUDENT PHOTOS
Enclosed with your upcoming summer mailing will be
information about the school picture package prices.
If you choose to place an order, remember to send
with your child on Orientation Day a check made
out to Geskus Photography Inc. All students will
receive a photo I.D. and their picture will appear in the yearbook,
regardless of placing an order or not.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
The first day of school is Tuesday, September 8.
All students will report to their 1st hour class at the
7:47 a.m. warning bell.
We thank God for the gift of another summer,
a time to create those family memories of
laughing and having fun together, but also a
time to really talk to one another, encourage
one another and remind each other of the
incredible goodness of our God. Our prayer is
that summer has slowed the pace of life down
enough for you so that you could really
connect with God, your loved ones, and your
community. While summer lingers a while
longer, we are eagerly preparing for another
school year at CCHS. This year our spiritual
emphasis will be on Living Water from verses
such as John 7:38 “Whoever believes in me,
as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will
flow rivers of living water.’” We know we all
thirst for this Living Water. We know only this
Living Water can quench our thirst and we
know that we must share this Living Water
with others. May God guide us this year as
we strive to do that.
As we ponder the theme of Living Water, many
images come to mind. Perhaps the most
powerful one, as it pertains to adolescents, is
an image of extreme thirst. Our children are
thirsty. They are thirsty for an identity that they
can claim and hang on to. They live in a
culture that tries hard to quench their thirst, but
leaves them dry as the bones described in
Ezekiel. Often our children question if drinking
from the well that will never dry up will truly
quench their thirst. That well does not look as
enticing as the neon labels and bright
commercials that they are bombarded with
each day. They thirst for us, their teachers and
parents, to show them that drinking from this
well, brings not only life, but a life of
abundance. How wonderful that Christ has
called us to show them this truth.
Other images that come to mind as we think
of water are images of awesome power and
delight. Living in the Great Lakes state, we
appreciate the absolute delight that water
brings to people of all ages. We see the
magnificence of it when we’re out on a boat on
Lake Michigan with only water in sight. We
experience the delight as we watch children
running and screaming while chasing each
through the sprinkler. When we are filled with
God’s Spirit, we cannot help but wake up each
morning in awe of the beauty and power of
God’s creation. When we immerse ourselves in
Living Water, we cannot help but squeal with
delight. This too is something that we are called
to model. We must be in awe and wonder of
God, so that our children will desire to be filled
with God’s Spirit and will desire to also live life
in that awe and wonder. We must delight in our
life in Christ, so our children will also desire that
same delight. Many of our children falsely fear
that a life in Christ means a life without delight
or fun.
Our prayer at GCCS this year is that each one
of our students PreK-12th grade will truly thirst
for the Lord and that their thirst will be satisfied
with Living Water. We pray that each of our
staff family members will allow the rivers of
Living Water to flow into them, fill them and that
those waters will flow out of GCCS to all who
thirst. May Psalm 42 be our corporate prayer.
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my
soul pants for you, my God. When can I go and
meet with God?
Shalom,
Thelma Ensink, Principal

2015-16 Scheduling Information
On Monday, August 10, all student schedules for the 2015-16 school year will be made available on PowerSchool.
Please login to your PowerSchool account and the schedule of your student will be listed when you are on the Grades
and Attendance page. This should be the initial page when you open the account, but if your account does not open to
this page select “Grades and Attendance” from the menu on the left side of the screen. If you have difficulties with
PowerSchool, forgot how to login, or do not have an account please email powerschool@calvinchr.org to receive
assistance.
Please note the following items related to the schedules for 2015-16:
1. All students who are not in the process of enrolling as of August 3 will be contacted. If definite plans for enrolling
are not arranged at that time, those students will have their course requests deleted to allow students who are
enrolled to be scheduled into classes . To enroll your student, please contact the Business Office at 532-2373.
2. The courses your student selected for 2015-16 are set. However, the order of your student’s classes
may still be re-arranged as we continually work to balance class sizes. Please check schedules again
just before the first day of school to make sure you have the most up-to-date schedule.
3. The schedule on PowerSchool represents the full-year schedule for your student. The left side of the schedule
should show Chapel and then two 1’s, two 2’s, two 3’s, etc. representing the period courses will meet. The first of
each of these numbers should be a first semester class and the second of each of these numbers is a second
semester class.
4. Students who have incomplete schedules due to course conflicts will be contacted directly by their counselor in
early August. These students must arrange a time to meet with their counselor in order to solve the course
conflicts. Changes are made on a first-come first-served basis so the earlier students meet their counselor the
more flexibility there will be in coming up with a solution.
5. Students who need (or want) to make changes to their schedules should come in at one of the
following times to meet with their counselor to make those changes:
Thursday, August 20, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 27, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Thursday, September 3, during Orientation Day (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
If you have any questions about your schedule or if you need to make changes to your schedule, please contact your
counselor or Mr. Timmer, Registrar.

Looking for a rewarding part time job?
GCCS NEEDS YOU!
For those new to CCHS this school year, the
Student Life Center (SLC) is located in the center of
the High School, next to the main study hall. This is
a comfortable place for students to visit throughout the school
day to talk, plan and inquire about information and resources
that promote spiritual growth outside the classroom. Our new
Chaplain this year is Mr. Brad Zwiers and he is looking
forward to meeting and interacting with all the CCHS
students this coming school year.
AFRICA TRIP
This year’s Africa trip found us in Malawi.
We partnered with CCHS graduate April
(Holwerda) and Steve Palmbos and
their family. Weather always
presents issues and delays;
however, the group persevered and spent a
week in the Malawian culture. We interacted in the Dzalenka
Refugee Camp (made up of 22,000 Congolese, Rwandan,
Burundi, and Ethiopian people). We worshiped with
them, interacted in games, participated in World Refugee
Camp Day, and learned of their struggles.
The students engaged in some pre-school education
exposure where the ratio of students to teacher was 90:1.
The Mvuu camp was our final destination as one cannot go to
Africa without experiencing a safari (mostly hippos and
crocodiles).
Thanks for your prayers and contributions to this trip. It was
a great way for us all to learn better of the work that Steve &
April are doing for There is Hope Malawi which is what
CCHS students have been busy supporting recently. The
travel group will do a chapel in late September to which you
are invited.

OPTING OUT
Section 9528 of the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act (ESEA) requires each school that receives funds (such
as professional development funds, etc.) under the ESEA
to provide, on request by a military recruiter or an
institution of higher education, access to the names,
addresses, and telephone listings of secondary students.
However, parents may request that such information NOT
be released for their child without prior written parental
consent. Therefore, if you as a parent wish to request
that your child’s information NOT be released, you
must contact the high school office in order to complete
a form indicating your preference.
CCES SCHOLARSHIP
This year two students have been selected by the CCES
Endowed Scholarship Committee to receive monetary
awards toward their 2015-2016 Calvin Christian School
tuition in honor of the former Calvin Christian Elementary
School. These students are: Emma Betten, Micah Bykerk,
Hannah Diemer, Delaney Grooters, Lynnae Ilbrink, Morgan
Steenstra, and Emma Pastoor. Congratulations!
MOMS-IN-PRAYER would love to have you
join them for prayer on Monday mornings at

Drama Room at CCMS. Come on the
Mondays that work in your schedule.
Our first meeting we will have coffee and
bagels so mark your calendars for Monday,
September 14.

our school and teachers and other students.
Watch God work in amazing ways through
prayer!
HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
Calvin Christian High School greatly needs
host families for international students for
the coming 2015-16 school year. Both
one-semester and two-semester students
are available for placement from a variety of
countries. Stipends to host families to cover room
and board are $3,000 for one semester and $6,000
for two semesters.
This is a unique opportunity to host a Christian young
man or woman from a different culture, showing them
how Christ has impacted his people in America while
learning from them of the impact of Christ in another
culture. If this opportunity interests you, please
contact Thelma Ensink at tensink@calvinchr.org or
Joy Betten at jbetten@calvinchr.org or call the high

EXTRA COSTS
In response to parent concerns we are recommending the
following concerning extra costs incurred by parents of athletes
on a CCHS sports team:

Team Meals – Costs of feeding a team can be quite
expensive. We recommend that team meals be kept
simple and cost contained (subs, BBQ, etc.). Parents
may want to limit the number of times per season that
team meals are offered to a certain number or to only
home contests, or even to a few select events. Another
consideration would be to invite the opposing team to
join our team for a simple meal after or before the
contest.

Team Clothing – We recommend that each team
purchase only one reasonably priced item of clothing
per season.
These recommendations will be discussed at your individual
teams’ parent meetings also and we welcome input on ways to
keep spending at a reasonable level for parents of athletes.
ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION
All students planning to participate in athletics during this
coming school year must have a physical on or after April 15,
2015, and before tryouts for their particular sport begins.
This is a rule given to us by the Michigan High School Athletic
Association.
No one is allowed to try out for a sport until the following
items have been completed:
 Completed enrollment forms are on file at CCSA.
 A copy of the current physical is on file in the high
school office signed by both student and a parent.
 A Pay-to-Participate fee of $95.00 is paid at CCHS.
Upon the payment of the Pay-to-Participate fee, a yellow card
will be issued to the student by the Administrative Secretary.
This card is then given to the coach at the first tryout date.
NOTE: Only students who are not selected for the teams will
have their fees refunded.
Remember that the high school office is open
only on Mondays & Tuesdays in August
from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Plan accordingly.
ATHLETIC FEE & INSURANCE
The Pay-to-Participate fee is $95.00 per sport played during
the school year with a maximum of $285.00 per family per
year. Insurance is included in this fee.
The athletic insurance provides payment of medical/dental
expenses incurred from accidents (examples: sprains, cuts,
fractures – not on-going problems such as muscle strains)
AFTER family or employer group coverage has contributed
what they will cover. This is a program of supplemental
coverage designed to pick up eligible balances left by family
or employer group insurance or plan. This does not cover
prescriptions.
SQUIRE RUN
The annual Squire Run will be
held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday,
September 19, at Calvin
Christian High School. Please
come and join us in a fun hour of
exercise. We will be doing laps
around the track to raise money for the
Athletic Boosters’ projects.
ATHLETIC BOOSTER MEETING
The next Athletic Booster meeting is August 19, at 6:00 p.m.
Join us in the high school study hall (Room 97) as we begin the
new school year. The Athletic Boosters raise money for all our
athletic programs.
Earlier this summer our Girls Soccer team won
Calvin Christian’s 4th State Championship in
Division IV. Way to go, Squires!

CALVIN CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL
HOT LUNCH PROGRAM
2015-2016
The Parent’s Organization of Calvin Christian Schools is again offering a Hot Lunch Program for the school
year 2015-16. Following is information that you will need to receive hot lunch for your student(s):

Hot lunch is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for all students and staff of Calvin Christian
Middle and High Schools.

“Punch Card” tickets are required to get a lunch every time, for each individual. There are absolutely
NO exceptions to this rule. You must have a valid Punch Card to receive a lunch.

Punch cards may be purchased at any time and are valid for any lunch during the current school year.
The cost of each lunch will be $3.50. Cards are available in the amount of $17.50 (5 punches) or
$35.00 (10 punches). Punch card order forms may be dropped off at the Middle School or High
School office, or may be mailed to the school. No hot lunch “punches” will be rolled over from the
previous year.

All punch card orders placed by noon on Wednesdays will be available for pick-up the following Friday
before school. All orders must be made by check, payable to Calvin Christian Hot Lunch. NO
CASH, please!

We will begin serving Hot Lunch on Monday, September 21. Orders for this lunch must be
placed by Wednesday, September 16, at noon. Students will be able to pick up their new punch
card in the school office on Friday, September 18. PLEASE USE THE ATTACHED ORDER FORMS
WHEN PLACING YOUR ORDER.

High School students and staff must have their 4th hour class written on their punch card. Middle
School students and staff must have their Home Room # written on their punch card. This is very
important!

Students and staff must indicate in their 1st hour class that they want Hot Lunch that day by placing
their valid punch card in the appropriate basket in that classroom. These will be brought to the office
and then delivered to your 4th hour class (HS), or home room (MS) before lunch time. You will then
take your valid punch card to the lunch line, which will start in the big study hall (HS), or Commons area
(MS). There the card will be checked and you will receive your lunch. You will then take your lunch
back to your home room (MS) or wherever you choose (HS) to eat.

If you want to purchase more than one lunch for that day, you must put your name and 4th hour, or
home room, class on the appropriate ‘post-it’ note (available from your teacher).

You WILL NOT receive notification if your punch card is running low, so please keep tabs on how many
punches you have left on your card to be sure to reorder in time.

Lost, stolen or destroyed punch cards will not be replaced. Please remember to treat your punch card
as cash.
If you have any questions, please call Sue Van’t Hof (261-9346) or Amy Petrlich (538-7209)
