The challenges of the current era have taught us not to sit at ease but to be busier than ever, utilizing the skills and resources available. At the beginning of 2009, I was unsure about how the Golden Krust brand (Continued on page 3) CONTACT US AT 718-OK-KRUST OR ON THE WEB @ WWW.GOLDENKRUSTBAKERY.COM T H E M AV I S & E P H R A I M H AW T H O R N E G O L D E N K R U S T F O U N DAT I O N GK FOUNDATION HONORS 7 SCHOLARS GOLDEN KRUST FRANCHISE LOCATIONS NATIONWIDE 1344 Amsterdam Ave.. PRESIDENT FROM PAGE 1) would fare, especially when so many iconic brands were failing and the fast food business was being hit with decreasing foot traffic and meal tickets. This had a rippling effect on our business which resulted in the inability of some of our franchisees to continue operating. With the general economic decline felt globally, we committed ourselves to maximum support to our existing franchisees, increasing communications and introducing a local store marketing program – energizing our Marketing Managers and Operations Consultants to work even more closely with our franchisees in their individual communities. Each month, we rolled out product incentives and fresh programs to bolster our franchisees, assisting them to retain existing customers and attract new ones. The 2009 Golden Krust brand stabilizer was our retail segment. Our approach gave new meaning to the proverb ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. Aggressive marketing, new product developments, new market creations, and a fired up staff complement, did it for us! Although we lost nine restaurants, especially in the areas where rental is exorbitant, we grew by leaps and bounds in the retail industry. Innovation gave rise to our microwaveable patty, and other hand-held packages which enabled us to get our products on the shelves of major wholesale clubs like Costco and other notable chains in the Mid-West region and beyond. One of our grandest feats in 2009 was the retention of all our employees. Due to the increased demand in our Retail Department, we were able to hire more persons to keep pace with production levels. Another great feat was the level of corporate and franchisee involvement in philanthropic community initiatives. We are proud of our franchisees who reached out in a generous way to their communities, working hand in hand in these ventures. Our goal for the year ahead is to continually employ creative management strategies, out-of-the-box thinking, team effort and judicious business acumen to bring about increased revenues in every segment of our business. We aim to raise the brand to a more prominent place in the market, to become a more visible player in the fast food industry. We will seize every opportunity for growth that will enhance and strengthen the organization. In conclusion, I take this opportunity to thank my shareholders, franchisees, customers and dedicated staff who have continued to share our vision and who have invested their resources to assist our growth. Together, we will! 3 VOLUME 6 • ISSUE 1 • SPRING 2010 STAFF PROFILE GK GIVES TO UWI, OBERLIN… (FROM PAGE 2) tions for Mr. Hawthorne and showed keen interest in learning the secret of Golden Krust’s success in transplanting Jamaican food and culture on such a large scale to the United States. Geese is proud to be a part of this growing franchise chain and is very grateful for the opportunity given to him by the Hawthorne family to earn a living doing what he really enjoys. The Hawthornes also visited Denham Town Primary where they made a pledge of four computers to the school. Vice Principal McLein, in his vote of thanks, expressed great delight and said these were the first donation of computers to the school’s computer lab which is now in the final stage of construction. President & CEO of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill (center) pledged $100,000 towards the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) to establish a fund to provide scholarships to Jamaican students pursuing full-time undergraduate studies in business at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on January 28th, Golden Krust commits to providing five (5) annual scholarships over a period of eight years. To be eligible for the Golden Krust scholarship, students must demonstrate motivation, academic astuteness, leadership potential, community involvement and financial need. Also on hand to sign the MOU was (at left) Professor E. Nigel Harris, UWI Vice Chancellor and Michael Flanigan, Chairman of AFUWI (right). A Oberlin High School in Lawrence Tavern, St. Andrew was the next stop on the Hawthorne’s tour. Substantial cash prizes were awarded to nine (9) of the most outstanding students at the institution. Lowell Hawthorne, a graduate of the Oberlin High School has been rewarding excellence at that institution over the past ten years. The Hawthorne’s were serenaded by Oberlin’s renowned school choir. The Hawthornes then journeyed up to the Norman Hawthorne Basic School, in the district of Border St. Andrew where they donated twenty chairs, 2 computers, a TV & DVD, fire extinguisher and two teacher’s desks. The community of Border and other well-wishers came out to show their support for the generous donation by the Hawthornes who also hail from that community. I came here, and then it was a 24-hour operation. I was always here…family was put aside for a while and it was all business.” Smiling she adds, “I think we have done our best in sacrificing so that today we are where we are.” FAMILY STICKING TOGETHER: Sister-in-law, Velma Hawthorne, another founding member of the organization echoes those very sentiments. “When we first started funds were tough but you did whatever you had to do to make it possible…” she says. “If you had to put in a paycheck, you did. I had no idea that it would have grown this big…I figured probably a couple of stores but not a hundred and twenty!” she laughs. Today, Velma beams with pride as the executive chef of the organization. It is Velma who makes sure that the food is up to par. “I go to the stores and make assessments to make sure the food is consistent. Wherever there is anything that is lacking I provide training support to all our franchisees. ”Brother Milton Hawthorne, also a co-founder, is in charge of all the equipment in the plant. “I am feeling very, very proud,” he shares, “I feel good inside knowing that we have come this far and have progressed at this pace.” Milton declares that he always knew the business would take off especially after we were so successful with the first store. “I saw it moving beyond this point, I said to Lowell ‘let’s do it! I am the one who opened the second store on 4th Avenue in Mt. Vernon.” Enjoying the moment Milton shares his vision, “Right now, we are looking for the international market,” “Twenty years down the road; we see a lot more stores.” Milton confessed, “I expected it to grow, but a little slower, at the pace we are growing now, it’s past my imagination.” “It’s good for us to be celebrating,” says Lloyd Hawthorne, the eldest of the Hawthorne children, “because when we just started we faced many hurdles that we had to climb over one by one, but we stuck together and today we can stand back and say we have come a mighty long way. From his home in South Florida where there are seventeen franchises spread across Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Lloyd expressed his gratitude to those “persons who helped us, all the family sticking together, that’s what makes us where we are today.” He too spoke of his joy and complete delight in this unprecedented achievement after all the sacrifice they made as a family. It’s Lloyd’s intention to build a“mini bakery”in South Florida some time next year which will supply the other stores with Golden Krust products. SUPPORT “I am feeling elated,” smiles Lorna Hawthorne, not only a co-founder but wife of Lowell Hawthorne and as such, the First Lady of the Golden Krust Empire. “As you know, when we started it was a struggle; we made a lot of mistakes, but we have learned some very valuable things from our mistakes.” Though she is very happy to be celebrating, Lorna reminds folks that, “Twenty years ago, there was no school to learn about this…you simply learnt from your mistakes; by making so many mistakes it has made us better and wiser,” she adds. She gives thanks for the many loyal supporters over the years. “Without our customers, our franchisees and everybody who supports us, and our employees who are the back bone of our business, we would not be here today,” she says. She serves as Director of Human Resources for the organization and is most proud to be able to share knowledge with“those we encounter, those who are doing small businesses, and those who come for information, especially Caribbean people and people of color.” Both Lorna and her husband, share their mantra to those seeking advise, “be determined in all that you do, be well informed, do what you like best, but whatever you do, give it your very best!” This is what they have done as a family. The story of the Hawthorne’s exemplifies the Marcus Garvey philosophy of self determination and self reliance. Lowell Hawthorne is mindful of Garvey and his teachings. He sees the Garvey model in the numerous franchisees who have invested more than 30 million dollars in the Golden Krust Empire. “We need to pass this on to the children and Golden Krust will have a positive strong future,” says Lauris, whose daughter owns three stores of her own. According to Lauris, who recently turned sixty, “The vision now is for the children. In twenty years, the children should be running the operation.” As owners of the nation’s fastest growing Caribbean food chain, the Hawthorne’s remain a very humble family. D “I am reflecting on the past,” he smiles, “the challenges we’ve had, and how we have been able to overcome them.” Many of the founders spoke of the sacrifices they had to make in order to see this dream manifest. Mr. Hawthorne says he is “so grateful and appreciative for everything,” and he is “just giving GOD thanks for his many blessings on the Hawthorne family.” He remembers clearly the fear that engulfed them at the start. “There was some fear,” he says, “but at the same time, we were very determined.” He recalls not being able to get financing from banks.” No one would lend us any money…we got our first vehicle from a friend,” he smiles. RESOURCES “Can you imagine us without financing, without contacts and without many of the resources that were necessary…it was a scary feeling…a very rough beginning for us.” However, with determination, the Hawthorne’s strived for excellence, and were tenacious enough to franchise their operation in 1996. “That was a tremendous undertaking for us as an organization,” says Lowell, “it was unchartered waters...we had never been there before.” Lauris Campbell, the eldest of the eleven Hawthorne siblings, agrees with him; “Right now I am grateful and happy to know that we have come this far…and the only way we could have come this far is by faith, hard work and good family.” She still manages the flagship store at 1381 Gunhill Road in the Bronx, and easily recalls the memories of her parents, Mavis and Ephraim and the strong Christian values which they bestowed on their children. “I was working in a nursing home back then, so I had two jobs; we put up our homes so we could get a loan from the bank….we gave up everything for this business. We made a lot of sacrifices and it’s those same Christian values that have kept the family together.” Lauris says the family matriarch gave them a lot of love and taught them about understanding and forgiveness. She told them that “the family must be together, no matter what it is.” She taught them to talk things out and stay strong. Smiling in agreement is her little sister Jackie, sibling number nine, also a co-founder. She opened her store in Atlanta three years ago and is currently responsible for manufacturing and distribution to the other five Golden Krust franchises in the state of Georgia. She too agrees that it was their parents’ Christian values that is responsible for the family’s success. “Bringing what we were trained and taught to do into the business,” she says, “was very positive, because it helped us not to be selfish.” As a family, they knew they had to share whatever they had with everybody else. “We had a sense of pride, a sense of communication, a sense of knowing that GOD is always watching over us. We knew that we had to do the right thing and the godly thing. (Continued on page 16 6 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF GOLDEN KRUST BAKERY & GRILL INC. His remarks were met with resounding applause from the august crowd. A vibrant sermon by guest preacher, the Rev. 3 VOLUME 6 • ISSUE 1 • SPRING 2010 T H E M AV I S & E P H R A I M H AW T H O R N E G O L D E N K R U S T F O U N DAT I O N GK FOUNDATION HONORS 7 SCHOLARS GOLDEN KRUST FRANCHISE LOCATIONS NATIONWIDE 1344 Amsterdam Ave.. The company paused to acknowledge this milestone achievement on the weekend of August 22-23, 2009 with the staging of customer appreciation days at all 120 locations across nine states. Customers were feted to pulsating Caribbean beats, give-aways and food samples galore. To mark the twentieth year, the first hundred customers were able to buy the chain’s signature beef patties for only 20 cents each. Needless to say, customers lined up at many Golden Krust restaurants to take advantage of that special offer. Some franchisees generously extended the offer to their first 200 customers because of the huge demand. Remarkable changes in economies worldwide have impacted every business sector, paralyzing many. The great US economy has not been spared. Many thriving business industries have disappeared and many yet are still buckling under the financial pressure. One of the innate things about people worldwide is that challenges usually give rise to inner resolve and awaken a spirit of survivability to endure and succeed, that would otherwise lay dormant. History has repeatedly taught this lesson and has proven many times over that as bad as situations are, they give rise to much good; mergers, affiliations, new industries, new products, new methods of doing things, financial astuteness, and a fresh sense of personal responsibility. The challenges of the current era have taught us not to sit at ease but to be busier than ever, utilizing the skills and resources available.
