What started as a fledgling
bakery back in 1989 has
mushroomed into a multimillion dollar empire which
currently holds the distinction of
being the largest Caribbean franchise
chain in the United States. The company paused to acknowledge this milestone achievement on the weekend of
August 22-23, 2009 with the staging

Krust restaurants to take
advantage of that special offer. Some
franchisees generously extended the
offer to their first 200 customers
because of the huge demand.

succeed, that would otherwise lay dormant. History has repeatedly taught
this lesson and has proven many times
over that as bad as situations are, they
give rise to much good; mergers, affiliations, new industries, new products,
new methods of doing things, financial
astuteness, and a fresh sense of personal responsibility. The challenges of
the current era have taught us not
to sit at ease but to be busier than
ever, utilizing the skills and resources
available.
At the beginning of 2009, I was unsure
about how the Golden Krust brand

President & CEO Lowell Hawthorne, accompanied by his

that institution. Mr. Hawthorne announced that his company will be adopting fifteen undergraduate students in an

Jamaica’s Ambassador to Washington Anthony
Johnson cuts Golden Krust’s 20th Anniversary
cake with GK President & CEO Lowell Hawthorne.
President Ruben Diaz, Consul General to Jamaica Geneive BrownMetzger, the founders of Carib
News, Karl & Faye Rodney, as well as
several others, sacrificed sleep on
the morning of Saturday August
22nd to lend their support and offer
congratulations to the company for
standing the test of time and
weathering the challenges to
emerge twenty years stronger.
Golden Krust President & CEO, Lowell Hawthorne flanked by cofounders Jackie Hawthorne-Robinson, Velma Hawthorne, Milton
He went on to explain that the time
has now come for the Jamaican patty to upstage the hamburger and
pizza as the food of choice in the
United States. His remarks were
met with resounding applause
from the august crowd.
A vibrant sermon by guest preacher,
the Rev. Dr. Franklyn Richardson,
brought the audience to their feet
as they were reminded about the
“Is-ness, Was-ness and Shall-ness of
God.” Several mass choirs and praise
dance teams added the final touch
to the weekend’s proceedings.
Golden Krust is poised to achieve
another twenty years in business as
it expands into new markets.

would fare, especially when so many iconic
brands were failing and the fast food business was being hit with decreasing foot traffic and meal tickets. This had a rippling effect
on our business which resulted in the inability of some of our franchisees to continue
operating.
With the general economic decline felt globally, we committed ourselves to maximum
support to our existing franchisees, increasing communications and introducing a local
store marketing program – energizing our
Marketing Managers and Operations Consultants to work even more closely with our
franchisees in their individual communities.
Each month, we rolled out product incentives and fresh programs to bolster our franchisees, assisting them to retain existing
customers and attract new ones.
The 2009 Golden Krust brand stabilizer was
our retail segment. Our approach gave new
meaning to the proverb ‘a stitch in time
saves nine’. Aggressive marketing, new product developments, new market creations,
and a fired up staff complement, did it for
us! Although we lost nine restaurants, especially in the areas where rental is exorbitant,
we grew by leaps and bounds in the retail
industry. Innovation gave rise to our
microwaveable patty, and other hand-held
packages which enabled us to get our products on the shelves of major wholesale clubs
like Costco and other notable chains in the
Mid-West region and beyond. One of our
grandest feats in 2009 was the retention
of all our employees. Due to the increased
demand in our Retail Department, we were
able to hire more persons to keep pace with
production levels. Another great feat was
the level of corporate and franchisee
involvement in philanthropic community
initiatives. We are proud of our franchisees
who reached out in a generous way to
their communities, working hand in hand
in these ventures.
Our goal for the year ahead is to continually
employ creative management strategies,
out-of-the-box thinking, team effort and
judicious business acumen to bring about
increased revenues in every segment of our
business. We aim to raise the brand to a
more prominent place in the market, to
become a more visible player in the fast food
industry. We will seize every opportunity for
growth that will enhance and strengthen
the organization.
In conclusion, I take this opportunity to thank
my shareholders, franchisees, customers and
dedicated staff who have continued to share
our vision and who have invested their
resources to assist our growth. Together,
we will!

We knew that if we build ourselves we were building others.”
Jackie also remembers those days
of sacrificing. “I was working at
The Bureau of Child Welfare and
then the Post Office but I gave
my job up, she recalls. I came
here, and then it was a 24-hour
operation. I was always
here…family was put aside for a
while and it was all business.”
Smiling she adds, “I think we have
done our best in sacrificing so
that today we are where we are.”
FAMILY STICKING TOGETHER:
Sister-in-law, Velma Hawthorne,
another founding member of
the organization echoes those
very sentiments. “When we first
started funds were tough but
you did whatever you had to do
to make it possible…” she says.
“If you had to put in a paycheck,
you did. I had no idea that it
would have grown this big…I
figured probably a couple of
stores but not a hundred and
twenty!” she laughs.
Today, Velma beams with pride
as the executive chef of the
organization. It is Velma who
makes sure that the food is up
to par. “I go to the stores and
make assessments to make sure
the food is consistent. Wherever
there is anything that is lacking
I provide training support to all
our franchisees. ”Brother Milton
Hawthorne, also a co-founder, is
in charge of all the equipment
in the plant. “I am feeling very,
very proud,” he shares, “I feel
good inside knowing that we
have come this far and have
progressed at this pace.”
Milton declares that he always
knew the business would take
off especially after we were so
successful with the first store. “I
saw it moving beyond this
point, I said to Lowell ‘let’s do it!
I am the one who opened the
second store on 4th Avenue in
Mt. Vernon.” Enjoying the
moment Milton shares his
vision, “Right now, we are looking for the international market,” “Twenty years down the
road; we see a lot more stores.”
Milton confessed, “I expected it
to grow, but a little slower, at
the pace we are growing now,
it’s past my imagination.”
“It’s good for us to be celebrating,” says Lloyd Hawthorne, the
eldest of the Hawthorne children, “because when we just
started we faced many hurdles
that we had to climb over one
by one, but we stuck together
and today we can stand back
and say we have come a mighty
long way. From his home in
South Florida where there are
seventeen franchises spread
across Miami, Fort Lauderdale
and Orlando, Lloyd expressed his
gratitude to those “persons who
helped us, all the family sticking
together, that’s what makes us
where we are today.” He too
spoke of his joy and complete
delight in this unprecedented
achievement after all the sacrifice they made as a family.
It’s Lloyd’s intention to build
a“mini bakery”in South Florida
some time next year which will
supply the other stores with
Golden Krust products.
SUPPORT
“I am feeling elated,” smiles
Lorna Hawthorne, not only a
co-founder but wife of Lowell
Hawthorne and as such, the
First Lady of the Golden Krust
Empire.
“As you know, when we started
it was a struggle; we made a lot
of mistakes, but we have
learned some very valuable
things from our mistakes.”
Though she is very happy to be
celebrating, Lorna reminds folks
that, “Twenty years ago, there
was no school to learn about
this…you simply learnt from
your mistakes; by making so
many mistakes it has made us
better and wiser,” she adds.
She gives thanks for the many
loyal supporters over the years.
“Without our customers, our
franchisees and everybody who
supports us, and our employees
who are the back bone of our
business, we would not be here
today,” she says. She serves as
Director of Human Resources for
the organization and is most
proud to be able to share knowledge with“those we encounter,
those who are doing small businesses, and those who come for
information, especially
Caribbean people and people of
color.” Both Lorna and her husband, share their mantra to
those seeking advise, “be determined in all that you do, be well
informed, do what you like best,
but whatever you do, give it
your very best!” This is what
they have done as a family.
The story of the Hawthorne’s
exemplifies the Marcus Garvey
philosophy of self determination and self reliance. Lowell
Hawthorne is mindful of Garvey
and his teachings. He sees the
Garvey model in the numerous
franchisees who have invested
more than 30 million dollars in
the Golden Krust Empire.
“We need to pass this on to the
children and Golden Krust will
have a positive strong future,”
says Lauris, whose daughter
owns three stores of her own.
According to Lauris, who recently turned sixty, “The vision now
is for the children. In twenty
years, the children should be
running the operation.” As owners of the nation’s fastest growing Caribbean food chain, the
Hawthorne’s remain a very
humble family.

with festivities and merriment in celebration of the
company’s 20th anniversary,
Lowell Hawthorne, Founder
and President of Golden Krust
Caribbean Bakery and Grill and
several of the founders of the
Golden Krust Empire took the
time to talk about their twenty
year journey and the milestone
achievement.
D
“I am reflecting on the past,” he
smiles, “the challenges we’ve
had, and how we have been
able to overcome them.” Many
of the founders spoke of the
sacrifices they had to make in
order to see this dream manifest. Mr. Hawthorne says he is
“so grateful and appreciative for
everything,” and he is “just giving GOD thanks for his many
blessings on the Hawthorne
family.” He remembers clearly
the fear that engulfed them at
the start. “There was some fear,”
he says, “but at the same time,
we were very determined.” He
recalls not being able to get
financing from banks.” No one
would lend us any money…we
got our first vehicle from a
friend,” he smiles.
RESOURCES
“Can you imagine us without
financing, without contacts and
without many of the resources
that were necessary…it was a
scary feeling…a very rough
beginning for us.” However, with
determination, the Hawthorne’s
strived for excellence, and were
tenacious enough to franchise
their operation in 1996. “That
was a tremendous undertaking
for us as an organization,” says
Lowell, “it was unchartered
waters...we had never been
there before.”
Lauris Campbell, the eldest of
the eleven Hawthorne siblings,
agrees with him; “Right now I
am grateful and happy to know
that we have come this far…and
the only way we could have
come this far is by faith, hard
work and good family.” She still
manages the flagship store at
1381 Gunhill Road in the Bronx,
and easily recalls the memories
of her parents, Mavis and
Ephraim and the strong Christian
values which they bestowed on
their children. “I was working in
a nursing home back then, so I
had two jobs; we put up our
homes so we could get a loan
from the bank….we gave up
everything for this business. We
made a lot of sacrifices and it’s
those same Christian values
that have kept the family
together.” Lauris says the family
matriarch gave them a lot of
love and taught them about
understanding and forgiveness.
She told them that “the family
must be together, no matter
what it is.” She taught them to
talk things out and stay strong.
Smiling in agreement is her little sister Jackie, sibling number
nine, also a co-founder. She
opened her store in Atlanta
three years ago and is currently
responsible for manufacturing
and distribution to the other
five Golden Krust franchises in
the state of Georgia. She too
agrees that it was their parents’
Christian values that is responsible for the family’s success.
“Bringing what we were trained
and taught to do into the business,” she says, “was very positive, because it helped us not to
be selfish.” As a family, they
knew they had to share whatever they had with everybody else.
“We had a sense of pride, a
sense of communication, a
sense of knowing that GOD is
always watching over us. We
knew that we had to do the
right thing and the godly thing.

with festivities and merriment in celebration of the
company’s 20th anniversary,
Lowell Hawthorne, Founder
and President of Golden Krust
Caribbean Bakery and Grill and
several of the founders of the
Golden Krust Empire took the
time to talk about their twenty
year journey and the milestone
achievement.
D
“I am reflecting on the past,” he
smiles, “the challenges we’ve
had, and how we have been
able to overcome them.” Many
of the founders spoke of the
sacrifices they had to make in
order to see this dream manifest. Mr. Hawthorne says he is
“so grateful and appreciative for
everything,” and he is “just giving GOD thanks for his many
blessings on the Hawthorne
family.” He remembers clearly
the fear that engulfed them at
the start. “There was some fear,”
he says, “but at the same time,
we were very determined.” He
recalls not being able to get
financing from banks.” No one
would lend us any money…we
got our first vehicle from a
friend,” he smiles.
RESOURCES
“Can you imagine us without
financing, without contacts and
without many of the resources
that were necessary…it was a
scary feeling…a very rough
beginning for us.” However, with
determination, the Hawthorne’s
strived for excellence, and were
tenacious enough to franchise
their operation in 1996. “That
was a tremendous undertaking
for us as an organization,” says
Lowell, “it was unchartered
waters...we had never been
there before.”
Lauris Campbell, the eldest of
the eleven Hawthorne siblings,
agrees with him; “Right now I
am grateful and happy to know
that we have come this far…and
the only way we could have
come this far is by faith, hard
work and good family.” She still
manages the flagship store at
1381 Gunhill Road in the Bronx,
and easily recalls the memories
of her parents, Mavis and
Ephraim and the strong Christian
values which they bestowed on
their children. “I was working in
a nursing home back then, so I
had two jobs; we put up our
homes so we could get a loan
from the bank….we gave up
everything for this business. We
made a lot of sacrifices and it’s
those same Christian values
that have kept the family
together.” Lauris says the family
matriarch gave them a lot of
love and taught them about
understanding and forgiveness.
She told them that “the family
must be together, no matter
what it is.” She taught them to
talk things out and stay strong.
Smiling in agreement is her little sister Jackie, sibling number
nine, also a co-founder. She
opened her store in Atlanta
three years ago and is currently
responsible for manufacturing
and distribution to the other
five Golden Krust franchises in
the state of Georgia. She too
agrees that it was their parents’
Christian values that is responsible for the family’s success.
“Bringing what we were trained
and taught to do into the business,” she says, “was very positive, because it helped us not to
be selfish.” As a family, they
knew they had to share whatever they had with everybody else.
“We had a sense of pride, a
sense of communication, a
sense of knowing that GOD is
always watching over us. We
knew that we had to do the
right thing and the godly thing.

We knew that if we build ourselves we were building others.”
Jackie also remembers those days
of sacrificing. “I was working at
The Bureau of Child Welfare and
then the Post Office but I gave
my job up, she recalls. I came
here, and then it was a 24-hour
operation. I was always
here…family was put aside for a
while and it was all business.”
Smiling she adds, “I think we have
done our best in sacrificing so
that today we are where we are.”
FAMILY STICKING TOGETHER:
Sister-in-law, Velma Hawthorne,
another founding member of
the organization echoes those
very sentiments. “When we first
started funds were tough but
you did whatever you had to do
to make it possible…” she says.
“If you had to put in a paycheck,
you did. I had no idea that it
would have grown this big…I
figured probably a couple of
stores but not a hundred and
twenty!” she laughs.
Today, Velma beams with pride
as the executive chef of the
organization. It is Velma who
makes sure that the food is up
to par. “I go to the stores and
make assessments to make sure
the food is consistent. Wherever
there is anything that is lacking
I provide training support to all
our franchisees. ”Brother Milton
Hawthorne, also a co-founder, is
in charge of all the equipment
in the plant. “I am feeling very,
very proud,” he shares, “I feel
good inside knowing that we
have come this far and have
progressed at this pace.”
Milton declares that he always
knew the business would take
off especially after we were so
successful with the first store. “I
saw it moving beyond this
point, I said to Lowell ‘let’s do it!
I am the one who opened the
second store on 4th Avenue in
Mt. Vernon.” Enjoying the
moment Milton shares his
vision, “Right now, we are looking for the international market,” “Twenty years down the
road; we see a lot more stores.”
Milton confessed, “I expected it
to grow, but a little slower, at
the pace we are growing now,
it’s past my imagination.”
“It’s good for us to be celebrating,” says Lloyd Hawthorne, the
eldest of the Hawthorne children, “because when we just
started we faced many hurdles
that we had to climb over one
by one, but we stuck together
and today we can stand back
and say we have come a mighty
long way. From his home in
South Florida where there are
seventeen franchises spread
across Miami, Fort Lauderdale
and Orlando, Lloyd expressed his
gratitude to those “persons who
helped us, all the family sticking
together, that’s what makes us
where we are today.” He too
spoke of his joy and complete
delight in this unprecedented
achievement after all the sacrifice they made as a family.
It’s Lloyd’s intention to build
a“mini bakery”in South Florida
some time next year which will
supply the other stores with
Golden Krust products.
SUPPORT
“I am feeling elated,” smiles
Lorna Hawthorne, not only a
co-founder but wife of Lowell
Hawthorne and as such, the
First Lady of the Golden Krust
Empire.
“As you know, when we started
it was a struggle; we made a lot
of mistakes, but we have
learned some very valuable
things from our mistakes.”
Though she is very happy to be
celebrating, Lorna reminds folks
that, “Twenty years ago, there
was no school to learn about
this…you simply learnt from
your mistakes; by making so
many mistakes it has made us
better and wiser,” she adds.
She gives thanks for the many
loyal supporters over the years.
“Without our customers, our
franchisees and everybody who
supports us, and our employees
who are the back bone of our
business, we would not be here
today,” she says. She serves as
Director of Human Resources for
the organization and is most
proud to be able to share knowledge with“those we encounter,
those who are doing small businesses, and those who come for
information, especially
Caribbean people and people of
color.” Both Lorna and her husband, share their mantra to
those seeking advise, “be determined in all that you do, be well
informed, do what you like best,
but whatever you do, give it
your very best!” This is what
they have done as a family.
The story of the Hawthorne’s
exemplifies the Marcus Garvey
philosophy of self determination and self reliance. Lowell
Hawthorne is mindful of Garvey
and his teachings. He sees the
Garvey model in the numerous
franchisees who have invested
more than 30 million dollars in
the Golden Krust Empire.
“We need to pass this on to the
children and Golden Krust will
have a positive strong future,”
says Lauris, whose daughter
owns three stores of her own.
According to Lauris, who recently turned sixty, “The vision now
is for the children. In twenty
years, the children should be
running the operation.” As owners of the nation’s fastest growing Caribbean food chain, the
Hawthorne’s remain a very
humble family.

Leon Marshall
job to ensure that the patties are perfect,” he said with a proud beam on his face.
He takes his job very seriously and is a dependable
member of the production team that churns out over
350 patties per minute. When next you eat a Golden
Krust patty, you can be assured that hard-working skillful personnel like Leon put a lot of pride and effort into

Mr. Hawthorne said that this 20year milestone was only a stepping
stone for greater achievements in
the years to come, as the company
endeavors to carry out its vision of
taking the taste of the Caribbean to
the world.
A worshipful time was enjoyed by
all as family, friends, customers and
other well-wishers came out in
their hundreds to give thanks to
God for his multiplied blessings on
the company. Ambassador Anthony
Johnson brought greetings on
behalf of the island of Jamaica and
the Jamaican Diaspora here in the
United States. In his address, he
declared: “patty time come”.

THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF GOLDEN KRUST CARIBBEAN BAKERY & GRILL INC.
PRESIDENT FROM PAGE 1)
would fare, especially when so many iconic
brands were failing and the fast food business was being hit with decreasing foot traffic and meal tickets. This had a rippling effect
on our business which resulted in the inability of some of our franchisees to continue
operating.
With the general economic decline felt globally, we committed ourselves to maximum
support to our existing franchisees, increasing communications and introducing a local
store marketing program – energizing our
Marketing Managers and Operations Consultants to work even more closely with our
franchisees in their individual communities.
Each month, we rolled out product incentives and fresh programs to bolster our franchisees, assisting them to retain existing
customers and attract new ones.
The 2009 Golden Krust brand stabilizer was
our retail segment. Our approach gave new
meaning to the proverb ‘a stitch in time
saves nine’. Aggressive marketing, new product developments, new market creations,
and a fired up staff complement, did it for
us! Although we lost nine restaurants, especially in the areas where rental is exorbitant,
we grew by leaps and bounds in the retail
industry. Innovation gave rise to our
microwaveable patty, and other hand-held
packages which enabled us to get our products on the shelves of major wholesale clubs
like Costco and other notable chains in the
Mid-West region and beyond. One of our
grandest feats in 2009 was the retention
of all our employees. Due to the increased
demand in our Retail Department, we were
able to hire more persons to keep pace with
production levels. Another great feat was
the level of corporate and franchisee
involvement in philanthropic community
initiatives. We are proud of our franchisees
who reached out in a generous way to
their communities, working hand in hand
in these ventures.
Our goal for the year ahead is to continually
employ creative management strategies,
out-of-the-box thinking, team effort and
judicious business acumen to bring about
increased revenues in every segment of our
business. We aim to raise the brand to a
more prominent place in the market, to
become a more visible player in the fast food
industry. We will seize every opportunity for
growth that will enhance and strengthen
the organization.
In conclusion, I take this opportunity to thank
my shareholders, franchisees, customers and
dedicated staff who have continued to share
our vision and who have invested their
resources to assist our growth. Together,
we will!

What started as a fledgling
bakery back in 1989 has
mushroomed into a multimillion dollar empire which
currently holds the distinction of
being the largest Caribbean franchise
chain in the United States. The company paused to acknowledge this milestone achievement on the weekend of
August 22-23, 2009 with the staging

this lesson and has proven many times
over that as bad as situations are, they
give rise to much good; mergers, affiliations, new industries, new products,
new methods of doing things, financial
astuteness, and a fresh sense of personal responsibility. The challenges of
the current era have taught us not
to sit at ease but to be busier than
ever, utilizing the skills and resources
available.
At the beginning of 2009, I was unsure
about how the Golden Krust brand
