Each moment that you spend with Jesus will deepen your union with Him and make your soul everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in heaven, and will help bring about an everlasting peace on earth." - Mother Teresa "Every soul which is in the state of grace can say, 'I am not alone, for the Trinity is in me: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.' Our attitude should mirror the attitude of Jesus: we must work in continual dependence upon God present within us, listening to His voice, to the interior motion of grace, and acting in accordance with it. We must conform our judgment to God's will, trying to see everything in His light, and working in such a way that our actions will always be in harmony with His views, designs, and good pleasure. In all our actions we, too, should be able to say, 'I do nothing by myself; I act according to God's inspiration, in order to do what is most pleasing to Him.'. - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. National Shrine of the Little Flower Life Matters “When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:1). Like the apostles, we too, are commissioned by Christ to be a witness to the world, to be his ears, eyes, feet and VOICE in the world; to witness His love for all human life no matter the world’s perception of their worth. Reflect on St. Teresa of Avila’s (1515–1582) poem “Christ Has No Body” and think about how Christ is calling you to be his body here on earth. Christ Has No Body Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. As the year draws to a close, the fifth graders will be finishing up their study of fractions and ending with geometry. So far the students have a strong understanding of how to relate a fraction to a decimal, how to make equivalent decimals, how to put fractions into simplest form, and how to change a mixed number into an improper fraction. This knowledge will put them into a good position for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. In science, we will be finishing up forces and motion and ending the school year with a unit on energy. To end the year with a hoot and a holler, the fifth graders will be putting on a vocabulary parade for the entire school on June 5. Each student will be given a vocabulary word from this year’s science or math studies and will be decorating a top hat with the word’s meaning. The fifth graders have been working very hard on their poetry. Students learned about several different types, practiced how to make them, and are now creating beautiful final copies. We have also been studying different types of figurative language so we can incorporate them into our poems. The students are finishing our study of the Revolutionary War and are beginning the westward movement and the concept of manifest destiny which shaped the growth of our country. We mapped battles of the war and analyzed advantages and disadvantages of both sides. In religion, we learned about Divine Mercy and Sister Faustina’s vision of Jesus. We made a poster with a math problem: MISERY + HOPE = MERCY and prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Now we are reviewing the Mysteries of the Rosary and praying our rosaries. We also accessed various sites on our SmartBoard to learn several Marian hymns. Declamations have been our focus in reading. The students chose a piece such as a poem or song lyrics, memorized it, and performed in front of their classmates. Fifteen semi-finalists were chosen to compete against one another for a chance to be a part of the final competition. The top eight students will now go on to the final competition which will be held on Friday, May10. We are so proud of each and every one of our students! Respectfully, Troop 1634 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower CSA Minute—Project Rachel A post-abortion healing training session will be held this Wednesday, May 15, for those interested in extending God’s mercy through the Project Rachel ministry. Project Rachel offers support and the compassion of Christ to all the victims of abortion — the mother, the father, grandparents, brothers and sisters — who need help in dealing with the grief, anger, and sense of responsibility for a great loss. Training will include an overview of post-abortion trauma, a personal witness of the impact of abortion and the healing process, ministry healing resources and pastoral options, and a Q&A with a post-abortion trained therapist and a priest. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help fund this important ministry, which is part of the Department of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Schools. The training costs $15 and will be held from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. For more information about Project Rachel, or other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.AOD.org. Evangelization: Calling All Catholics—Evangelize! Everyone has a role in evangelization. Pope Paul VI in his message on evangelization to the modern world, proclaimed to all the faithful: “We exhort the priests and deacons, the bishops' collaborators in assembling the People of God and in animating spiritually the local communities. We exhort the religious, witnesses of a Church called to holiness and hence themselves invited to a life that bears testimony to the beatitudes of the Gospel. We exhort the laity: Christian families, youth, adults, all those who exercise a trade or profession, leaders, without forgetting the poor who are often rich in faith and hope- all lay people who are conscious of their evangelizing role in the service of their Church or in the midst of society and the world. We say to all of them: our evangelizing zeal must spring from true holiness of life, and, as the Second Vatican Council suggests, preaching must in its turn make the preacher grow in holiness, which is nourished by prayer and above all by love for the Eucharist.” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 76). “I therefore invite all the Catholics of America to take an active part in the evangelizing initiatives which the Holy Spirit is stirring in every part of this immense continent” (John Paul II, The Church in America, 76). www.shrinechurch.com May 12, 2013 Page 13 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower www.shrinechurch.com Year of Faith “Deep within his conscience man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling him to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil, tells him inwardly at the right moment: do this, shun that. For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God. His dignity lies in observing this law, and by it he will be judged. His conscience is man’s most secret core, and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths. By conscience, in a wonderful way, that law is made known which is fulfilled in the love of God and of one’s neighbor. Through loyalty to conscience Christians are joined to other men in the search for truth and for the right solution to many moral problems that arise in both the life of individuals and from social relationships.” Gaudium et spes 16 Question How does my inner voice help me in my daily life to be a better Christian? Prayer Lord, I believe in you, grant me stronger faith. I trust in you; give me a more confident hope. I love you; may I love you more ardently. I am sorry for my sins; may I have a deeper sorrow. I worship you as my first beginning; I long for you as my last end. I praise you as my constant helper and invoke you as my gracious protector. Amen.
