This Foundation – donors, supporters, volunteers, staff and board combine to form a most impressive organization whose sole function is to support the students, staff and schools in South St. Paul. For more than 25 years the work of this Foundation has been nothing short of amazing! I have been actively involved as a parent and volunteer in six school districts in five states and what you have here in this community is unmatched. This is by far the most rewarding volunteer opportunity I have ever been involved with. You should be very proud of this Foundation! If you are involved, in any capacity, THANK YOU, you are making a huge difference in our children’s lives! If you are not yet involved, please join us, we can use your help, both financially and volunteering your time and talents. Supporting this Foundation and this community may be one of the best things you ever do – it was for me! See everyone at the 2014 Gala, if not before…. Not pictured: Adam Carter and Don Peacock. 1 South Saint Paul Educational Foundation International Baccalaureate at SSP Thrives Due to Foundation Support The SSP Educational Foundation provides funds to cover fees to the IBO. These fees provide SSP students with a level of education excellence that is hard to match. SSP instructors teaching in the PYP (Primary Years Program), MYP (Middle Years Program), and within the high school’s IB Diploma Program get additional training through the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to enhance their skills. The SSP Educational Foundation funds provide the needed resources for the SSP public schools to be able to pay the fees to the IBO, which in turn allows the schools to set the cornerstones for creating K-12 excellence in educational programming and better preparing students for their futures. The funding made available through the SSP Educational Foundation allows SSP to continue to offer this outstanding academic programming to all of its students. Students benefit from the district’s thoroughly committed administrators and instructors, who work tirelessly to keep up-to-date in the nuances of the programming provided by the IBO. 2012-2013 Endowed Funds Create Lasting Memories Linda Kjerland, a special education teacher at Kaposia Education Center and Jon Gustafson, a 7th grade math teacher were presented the 16th Annual “Roxanne Bliss Silver Apple Award” from the South St. Paul Educational Foundation. Linda Kjerland was nominated by students Nicky Rorhlen, Chase Rosenquist and Thomas Barth. Jon Gustafson was nominated by Matt and Emily Forbrook. Don Bliss, SSP Class of 1950 established the Silver Apple Award in honor of his wife, Roxanne Waldhauser Bliss, SSP Class of 1951. This award was created to encourage students to appreciate educators or support staff who are especially important to them. It is their belief that school employees play a very instrumental role in the future success of students. Students nominate a teacher or other employee who made a significant difference in their lives. Award recipients received a silver apple commemorating the award, as well as a cash stipend. 2 Our Students Benefit from Every Gift–Large or Small The Foundation enthusiastically looks forward to your gifts of time, talents and monies as we continue our support for programs, projects and scholarships for the students and staff of South St. Paul Public Schools. Friends of the Foundation gathered to show support for the Educational Foundation and its efforts of enriching the lives of South St. Paul students. Over $30,000 was raised to help support programs for students of South St. Paul public schools. It has been 25 years since the first South St. Paul Educational Foundation 5K Run/Walk. This year we had perfect weather and an overwhelming amount of participants. So, what are the top 10 reason to participate in the Walk-a-thon? One of our teachers came up with these for her class and we agree: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. The evening was filled with great food and refreshments, and a live and silent auction. We were please to honor all past and present school board members and the Class of 1962 for their continued support and dedication to the Foundation. 50% of all money raised goes directly back into the classrooms. It funds school programs It’s great exercise You get to see your classmates You get to spend time with your family You get a hot dog dinner You get a cool t-shirt You get to enjoy the outdoors You get to see your teachers It’s FUN The event was a huge success and we thank our donors, guests and volunteers who participated. In May, the Foundation sent out an appeal asking former scholarship recipients to join this group and reflect on the education that they received from South St. Paul public schools. South St. Paul has long believed that an investment in a child’s education was an investment in its future. Not only has this community believed this but is has acted on this belief. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed and made The Winners Circle Scholarship Fund possible. Our members have increased since the beginning of this campaign but we would like to establish this fund as a permanent part of the scholarship program. To do this we still need your help. For example, if half of those who received scholarships contributed even $10 (or more), we would raise over $10,000 for our scholarship fund. You can really see what can be accomplished by pulling together. Every contribution can make an impact in the success of our students and they are truly grateful. Bruce was a resident of South St. Paul for over 18 years and even though he didn’t grow up in South St. Paul, he called it home. Bruce and Jill decided to raise their daughters in South St. Paul because of the reputation of the schools. Bruce was a caring and devoted father who was involved with his children and their activities. From the time Bruce’s daughters were in grade school through high school he enjoyed watching and supporting them in choir, band and theater until he passed away in 2011 after a short battle with cancer. William New Scholarships Established in 2012-2013 Each year new scholarship opportunities for South St. Paul High School seniors are provided through the generous donations of sponsoring groups, individuals, and organizations. On behalf of the recipients, we extend our appreciation to those who established the following scholarships through the Foundation in 2012-2013. and Thomas Sobaski Memorial Scholarship The Thomas Sobaski scholarship was renamed to include Tom’s father Bill who passed away recently. Bill was a 1944 graduate of South St. Paul High School. He was a lifetime resident, longtime business owner, and active in many organizations. His kindness and generosity were felt throughout the community. Tom, the youngest of five children, was a 1982 graduate. He had a gently but competitive spirit and thoroughly enjoyed athletics, hunting, fishing and the out of doors. He touched the lives of all who knew him. Both Bill and Tom were always proud to say they were from South St. Paul, and truly believed in a strong sense of community. James J. Lindell, Sr. Scholarship This scholarship was established by Jim’s daughter Lynda Voge to honor his commitment to the South St. Paul public schools. Jim was always proud of South St. Paul schools for their high level of academics and their athletic programs. 7 South Saint Paul Educational Foundation 2012-2013 Sounds Heard from Dodge Nature Center: “Moo”. . .“Baaa”. . .“Neigh”. . .and “Ooooh!” Each spring the Kindergarten students from Kaposia and Lincoln Center study a PYP unit on animals. They discuss animals that we keep as pets, those that live on farms, and those that live in the wild. The children are always so excited for this unit! While children are usually quite familiar with the kinds of pets people keep in their homes, many of the Kindergarten students have never been to a farm or seen farm animals up close. Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul provides a terrific opportunity for children to experience a farm, learn about the animals that live on a farm, and discover how exactly they help us. The SSP Educational Foundation has funded the trip from donations from the SSP Garden Club. Kindergartners have visited Dodge Nature Center for a number of years now and it is always a greatly anticipated field trip for the children. Kindergarten Teachers Erin Roescke (KEC) and LaVonne Francis (LC) made the request this past year on behalf of the fourteen Kindergarten classes within the two schools. They reminded the Foundation that the children have really enjoyed this field trip in the past and that the children remember so much more about the animals that they have had the opportunity to see and touch. The experience helps to build background and to activate prior knowledge. The teachers also explained that Kindergarten age students are still very concrete learners and need first hand experiences to learn new concepts. The trip occurred this past May and 290 Kindergarten students were able to attend! That’s a whole lot of “ooooohs” that were heard! Paleontologists Alerted: Students Unearth Fossil Shark Teeth In Lincoln Center! As part of this past spring’s Science Night at Lincoln Center, children were provided the exciting opportunity to participate in a hands-on fossil dig right at the school! The students sifted through sand to “discover” fossil shark teeth, then sort and identify them. Each participant could keep two of the fossils he or she found, as a remembrance of the special learning event. Program requester, Nancy Gerber, informed the Foundation that the Science Night has been held the last two years and the interest keeps growing. Last year’s attendance was over 500 students, and more than 600 students were expected to attend this year. The goal of the fossil dig is to spark students’ interests in paleontology, using methods similar to those used in the field. Science Night, in general, is meant to generate excitement for STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) Education. Throughout SSP there is an aim to introduce stronger emphasis on STEM in our schools. The dig, along with the other STEM stations that were set up that evening covered many areas of science and technology that would be of interest to students ranging between K-6 levels. 8 2012-2013 South Saint Paul Educational Foundation Youth LEGO League Inspires High School Robotics Team 1st Grade Students Advise Red Riding Hood: Walk with a Buddy Avid readers of last year’s SSP Educational Foundation Annual Report may recall that during the 2011-12 school year the Foundation sponsored a program request to start a LEGO League for students at Lincoln Center and Kaposia Education Center. The success of that project was outstanding and it inspired the creation of a robotics team for the older students! Just a short year after the LEGO League began, the Foundation received a program request for funding to offer a robotics team at the high school beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. The financial support needed was to help with the start-up costs to purchase a robotics team packet and join the “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” (aka FIRST) League. The Robotics League falls right in alignment with existing International Baccalaureate programming. Last December, 150 first graders from Kaposia Education Center had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the Old Log Theater in Excelsior to watch the play Little Red Riding Hood. Kaposia instructor Paulette Spafford made a program request to the Foundation. Spafford explained that the play would fit in with the PYP Unit of Inquiry called “How We Express Ourselves”. She wrote in her request: “Students will watch and interact with a real play and make connections to the English Language Arts standards that address ‘I Can’ statements.” The first graders attended the play and both the students and their parents found it to be an incredibly positive experience. However, some families were affected by the cost of the ticket price. Thanks to you—our Foundation supporters—$500 was given to subsidize the trip so that all of the students could attend, with no financial hardship. Chad Sexauer, who made the program request, explained that the Activities Department goal is to allow SSP students an opportunity to learn and compete in the fields of science and technology and that robotics just happens to be the vehicle to make that happen. At the time of the initial request, Sexauer noted, “The competitive robotics movement is continuing to grow throughout the state and nation. Thanks to you! SSP is now competing in the Robotics League! This winter, the “Iron Bulls” finished in 10th place for their first official competition at the 10,000 Lake Regional held at the University of Minnesota. This was just the start. With more than 170 teams competing in the state of Minnesota, the Packers finished 41st for the season.
