STATEMENT OF ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES REGARDING
NEWS REPORTS ABOUT CLERGY ABUSE DOCUMENTS
No institution has learned more from mistakes made decades ago in dealing with priests who have abused young
people than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We have apologized for the sad and shameful actions of some priests, as
well as for our inadequate responses in assisting victims and in dealing with perpetrators. For more than a decade,
however, few institutions have done as much as the Los Angeles Archdiocese to promptly report abuse allegations to
civil authorities, to screen all those who supervise children, and to train adults and children in the latest abuse prevention procedures. The past cannot be changed, but we have learned from it. We are justifiably proud of our record of
child protection in the 21st century, and we remain vigilant against all that would harm our children and young
people.
In our ongoing effort to keep you informed of media issues, I am writing to alert you to a pair of abuse-related
stories to be published as early as this afternoon (Monday) by the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. The
stories concern information in clergy personnel files that were included as attached exhibits in pending litigation
involving former priests Nicholas Aguilar Rivera and Michael Baker.
Anticipating these stories, Cardinal Mahony has asked that the following statement be shared with all clergy and
parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
STATEMENT FROM CARDINAL ROGER M. MAHONY
REGARDING SEXUAL ABUSE OF MINORS BY CLERGY
Cardinal Roger M. Mahony
Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles
January 21, 2013
With the upcoming release of priests' personnel files in the Archdiocese's long struggle with the sexual abuse of minors
by Catholic clergy, my thoughts and prayers turn toward the victims of this sinful abuse.
Various steps toward safeguarding all children in the Church began here in 1987 and progressed year by year as we
learned more about those who abused and the ineffectiveness of so-called "treatments" at the time. Nonetheless, even
as we began to confront the problem, I remained naïve myself about the full and lasting impact these horrible acts
would have on the lives of those who were abused by men who were supposed to be their spiritual guides. That fuller
awareness came for me when I began visiting personally with victims. During 2006, 2007 and 2008, I held personal
visits with some 90 such victims.
Those visits were heart-wrenching experiences for me as I listened to the victims describe how they had their
childhood and innocence stolen from them by clergy and by the Church. At times we cried together, we prayed
together, we spent quiet moments in remembrance of their dreadful experience; at times the victims vented their pent
up anger and frustration against me and the Church.
Toward the end of our visits I would offer the victims my personal apology - and took full responsibility - for my
own failure to protect fully the children and youth entrusted into my care. I apologized for all of us in the Church for
the years when ignorance, bad decisions and moral failings resulted in the unintended consequences of more being
done to protect the Church - and even the clergy perpetrators - than was done to protect our children.
I have a 3 x 5 card for every victim I met with on the altar of my small chapel. I pray for them every single day. As I
thumb through those cards I often pause as I am reminded of each personal story and the anguish that accompanies
that life story.
The cards contain the name of each victim since each one is precious in God's eyes and deserving of my own prayer
and sacrifices for them. But I also list in parentheses the name of the clergy perpetrator lest I forget that real priests
created this appalling harm in the lives of innocent young people.
It remains my daily and fervent prayer that God's grace will flood the heart and soul of each victim, and that their
life-journey continues forward with ever greater healing.
I am sorry.

The NEW EVANGELIZATION:
The New Evangelization calls all Catholics to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to
proclaim the Gospel. We are called to be evangelized and then go forth to evangelize. The New Evangelization
invites each Catholic to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church. (from the USCCB)

Year of Faith

KNOW YOUR FAITH…
The Gospel for 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C
There Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.
He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath
day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage
where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked
intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:14-21)
The following excerpt is from the Catechism of the Catholic Church—CCC 436:
The word "Christ" comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah, which means "anointed". It became the name
proper to Jesus only because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission that "Christ" signifies. In effect, in Israel those consecrated to God for a mission that he gave were anointed in his name. This was the case for kings, for priests and, in rare instances, for prophets. This had to be the case all the more so for the Messiah whom God would send to inaugurate his kingdom definitively. It was necessary that the Messiah be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at once as king and priest, and also as
prophet. Jesus fulfilled the messianic hope of Israel in his threefold office of priest, prophet and king.
TREASURES of OUR FAITH By RYAN ADAMS - Deacon Candidate
Greetings brothers and sisters. As we go through this ‘Year of Faith’, each week we will take a journey together to deepen and
rediscover our faith as Catholic Christians. We will take time to look at the rich traditions of our Church, we’ll look at what
certain things signify and their symbolism, take time to answer some frequently asked questions and look at why we do certain things as Catholics. This week we’ll continue to look at the Chief elements that make up the Eucharistic Prayer.
ANAMNESIS: The Church, fulfilling the command that she received from Christ the Lord through the Apostles, keeps the
memorial of Christ, recalling especially his blessed Passion, glorious Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven.
OFFERING: In this memorial, the Church – and in particular the Church here and now gathered (us present) – offers in the
Holy Spirit the spotless Victim to the Father. The Church’s intention, is that we the faithful also learn to offer ourselves, so day
by day we may be consummated, through Christ the Mediator, into complete unity with God and complete unity with each
other as brothers and sisters, so that at last, God may be all in all.
INTERCESSIONS: By which expression is given to the fact that the Eucharist is celebrated in communion with the entire
Church, of heaven as well as of earth, and that the offering is made for her and for all her members, living and dead, who have
been called to participate in the redemption and salvation purchased by Christ’s Body and Blood.
FINAL DOXOLOGY: Here the glorification of God is expressed and which is then confirmed and concluded by all of our
united acclamation, AMEN!
Next week we’ll continue our journey walking through the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Safeguard the Children
The Personnel Files
of Accused Priests
The Archdiocese has complied with a
retired federal judge's 2011 order to edit
the personnel files of priests accused of
sexual abuse, prior to those files being
released to the public. The judge's order
was the result of a process that attorneys
for abuse victims and the Archdiocese
agreed would be accepted by all parties
involved. It is important to note that the
judge's order specified the edits in part
due to what he said were demonstrable
positive changes the Archdiocese had
already implemented to its policies and
procedures in reporting abuse to
authorities and in training personnel and
children in abuse prevention techniques.
Much of the information in the files is
decades old and has already been the
subject of in-depth coverage in the press
and was disclosed by the Archdiocese in
the 2004 Report to the People of God.
There is no priest in ministry who has
been found to have abused a minor.

During this past Christmas season of 2012, a desire was realized that several liturgies and events had not been
captured on video. In light of that need, recordings of several events took place. The St. Charles School
Christmas Program, The St. Charles Adult Choir and School Choir benefit concert for the Holy Family Service
Center, Our Lady of Guadalupe evening mass, The St. Charles School Choir in rehearsal, and the Simbang Gabi
celebration mass were all captured on video. These events were reproduced on individual DVD’s and are now
on sale for $15 each at the Parish Center and at St. Charles School. Please stop by for your own DVD!

TOGETHER IN MISSION 2013
Love never fails. - 1Cor 13:8
Archbishop Gomez is sending a letter, within the next 2 weeks, to past contributors to
the Together in Mission campaign. If you receive this letter, please respond with a
generous pledge to support the ministries, programs and services provided by the parishes
and schools that receive these funds.
On the weekend of February 2-3, we will provide additional information about this
campaign that provides funds to 35 parishes and 52 schools that would find it difficult, if
not impossible, to operate without them.
On the weekends of February 2-3 and February 9-10, we will conduct the in-pew solicitation process so that those who do not
receive the mailing will have an opportunity to make their pledges. As each parish household prayerfully reflects on the amount of
the pledge to be made to help these parishes and schools, please reflect on the following questions:
1. Do I really believe that I have a duty to help others who are in need?
2. Is what I give to the work of the Church enough to show how grateful I am for what God
has given me?
3. Do I appreciate how important every contribution to Together in Mission is to the people in the
subsidized parishes and schools?
Please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you consider the above questions and give generously, according to what God as
given to you.
A TIME FOR REFLECTION
This week, you are asked to read and reflect upon the Together in Mission materials that you received today. Together in Mission
provides substantial financial support to 35 parishes and 52 schools in our Archdiocese. These parishes and schools provide
education, ministry and a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of our sisters and brothers.
Sometimes it is difficult to envision how your pledge can help so many people. But, it does. To see how, please review the materials
and read the statements of those whose parishes and schools receive support.
The theme of the campaign is “Love never fails.” 1Cor 13:8 Together in Mission provides an opportunity to show our concern for
those served by the parishes and schools that need your financial support.
If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. Also, we will
conduct our annual Together in Mission in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend and the following weekend.
As always, what you give should be given in gratitude and thanksgiving for what God has given to you. Thank you for your
prayerful consideration and generous response.

UNIDOS EN MISIÓN 2013
El amor no falla nunca. - 1 Corintios 13:8
dado a usted.

SERVICE CENTER UBICADO
ENFRENTE DE LA PARROQUIA.
Donativo $6.00 por sesión. No se
requiere Inscripción previa.
Se impartirán temas de Formación
Humana y Espiritual, Sacramentos,
Introducción al estudio de la Biblia,
el Catecismo de la Iglesia, etc.
Más informes a los tels.
818-419-0823 y 818-813-3866
