NEXT STEPS GUIDE Congratulations on your admission to Marymount California University. Welcome to the Marymount California University family. On behalf of Dr. Michael S. Brophy, President, and the entire Marymount California University community, let me add my congratulations on your admission. We are excited to provide you with the information you need to enroll as a Marymount California University student this fall. The pages of this guide are your “Next Steps.” In his book titled “Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and Human Experience,” Dr. Steve Maraboli states, “It’s funny how, in this journey of life, even though we may begin at different times and places, our paths cross with others so that we may share our love, compassion, observations, and hope.” As you take the next steps of your academic/life journey here at Marymount, students from throughout California, the United States, and the world will surround you. Each of you embodies integrity, respect for human dignity, and commitment to justice. Furthermore, you are all kindred spirits who have a plan of action to enhance your education and make the world a better place. What a great common bond to share! If you’ve visited our campus, I’m sure our breathtaking views of the majestic Pacific Ocean and the golden California sunshine have warmed your heart. Ah, but the true warmth you’ll feel is generated by our students, faculty, and staff. Our faculty and staff are here to assist and mentor you throughout your Marymount journey. It is easy for you to share your goals and aspirations with us. It is also an extremely important part of your “Next Steps.” Over the course of the next few months, I look forward to speaking with and meeting you and your family members. In just three years, our students have completed 50,564 nonprofit service learning hours! Your first-year experience? Excellent. When you first get to campus, you’ll be able to work with your Advisor and Advising Services to plan your Marymount experience. In the first week of the semester you’ll create an education plan that sets you up in core classes and positions you to meet requirements for your degree. As an entering student you’ll enroll in ID117 “The Art of Being Human,” aka Freshman Seminar. You’ll meet twice a week with fellow students for a threeunit course designed to enhance your personal, social, and physical well-being. Marymount California has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs to enable our students to go out into the community and actively assist in after-school programs for kids. Students can also choose to do an independent project and serve at a site of their own choosing. Where you’re doing service isn’t as important as focusing on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility and involving yourself in the needs of our community. Start thinking about your future. What about a master’s degree? Our BA-MS and our BA-MBA Five-Year Pathway programs let qualified undergraduate students accelerate their education and complete up to nine units of graduate course work in their senior year. Accepted students are expected to complete their master’s degrees within 15 months. You’ll submit your application for the Master of Science in Community Psychology, the Master of Science in Leadership and Global Development, or the Master of Business Administration during your junior year. 5 2014-2015 Academic Calendar 8/21/14 to 8/23/14 Orientation 1/19/15 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday - University is closed 8/25/14 First day of fall semester classes 2/11/15 Last day to withdraw from a first 8-week term class 8/29/14 Last day to add or drop fall semester and first 8-week term classes 2/16/15 Presidents’ Day Holiday - University is closed 9/01/14 Labor Day holiday - University is closed 2/17/15 Service day - no classes 9/24/14 Last day to withdraw from first 8-week term class 2/23/15 to 2/27/15 Midterm exams 10/06/14 to 10/10/14 Midterm exams 2/27/15 Last day of first 8-week term classes 10/10/14 Last day of first 8-week term classes 3/02/15 First day of second 8-week term classes 10/13/14 to 10/14/14 Fall break - no classes 3/06/15 Last day to add or drop second 8-week term classes 10/15/14 First day of second 8-week term classes 3/16/15 to 3/20/15 Spring break - University is closed 10/17/14 Last day to add or drop second 8-week term classes 3/30/15 Registration begins for summer and fall 2015 and spring 2016 10/27/14 Registration begins for spring and summer 2015 4/03/15 Good Friday - University is closed 11/12/14 Last day to withdraw from a fall semester class 4/06/15 Easter Monday - University is closed 11/19/14 Last day to withdraw from a second 8-week term class 4/08/15 Last day to withdraw from a spring semester class 11/25/14 University closes at 4:15 p.m. 4/15/15 Last day to withdraw from a second 8-week term class 11/26/14 to 11/28/14 Thanksgiving Holiday - University is closed 5/01/15 Last day of spring semester and second 8-week term classes 12/05/14 Last day of fall semester and second 8-week term classes 5/04/15 to 5/08/15 Final exams 12/08/14 to 12/12/14 Final exams 5/08/15 Graduation Mass 1/12/15 First day of spring semester classes 5/09/15 Commencement and Reception 1/16/15 Last day to add or drop spring semester and first 8-week term classes 6 Oceanview Campus, Palos Verdes, CA Amazing views from all three Marymount California campuses. The carpeted living room has a coffee table and two couches. The kitchen has a table, four chairs, a stove, and a refrigerator. Students have access to quiet and group study rooms, card-operated laundry facilities, parking on campus, and high-speed wireless Internet.
