05. Environment
We run business in an environmentally responsible way and implement an environmental management
system. We apply internal Global Environmental Key Performance Indexes (EKPIs) to measure environmental performance. We continue to be certified for ISO 14001, which guarantees the high standard of
our environmental management system. We also involve in and support various energy-saving projects
of NGOs (such as the WWF) to reduce the negative impact of industry on the environment.

- Water Conservation
Fresh water resources are scarce, and deserve our attention and protection. The jeans production is a
water-intensive process, but we are reducing the amount of fresh water used. Our goal is to reach at least
70% reuse rate of treated wastewater. We closely monitor water quality to manage water resources in a
sustainable way.
In 2014, our water consumption per pair of jeans was 113
liters, of which 79 liters was
recycled water.
- Wastewater Recycling
Our long-term goal is to achieve zero discharge of wastewater. Through advanced wastewater treatment
facility and strict water quality monitoring and management, we can reuse about 80% of treated wastewater in our production process and in the greening and cleaning of our facility, which has earned us the title
of ‘The First Batch of Water-Saving Enterprise in Guangdong Province’.
In 2014, we processed approximately 1.71 million tons
of wastewater, of which we
recycled 1.38 million tons and
discharged 33 tons of wastewater, which is compliant with
local standard.

Recycled Water
We are a partner in Levi’s ‘Water<Less Program’, comply
with Water Recycle/Reuse Standard (WRRS), we have
produced over 200,000 pairs of jeans with 100%
recycled water used.
To effectively manage the quality of discharged wastewater, we have established an online monitoring system
with the Zhongshan Municipal Government. The
system sends the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and
the Ammonium (NH4+ ) data directly to the Zhongshan
Environmental Protection Bureau.

- Detox Campaign
We fully support the Greenpeace Detox Campaign that aims to eliminate toxic chemicals from
garment production worldwide. We have established a chemical management system for our
entire production cycle, from procurement, usage and storage, as well as treatment and disposal of
solid waste and wastewater.
In addition, we have closely monitored the ‘9+2 Hazardous Chemical Substances’. We have
compiled our internal Restricted Substances List (RSL), and test our wastewater for harmful
substances twice a year. We also educate our key suppliers and partners on the importance of
chemical management, which has reinforced our cohesiveness to continuously improve the
monitoring of toxic chemicals.
11
- Carbon Footprint Reduction
In the production process, we maximize the use of clean energy and other mitigation measures to reduce
the carbon emissions of each piece of garment, so as to reduce the impact on the environment.

- Higg Index
We are committed to promote sustainable development initiatives in the industry. As a member of the
apparel supply chain, Crystal Group joined Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) in 2012. As one of our
commitments as an SAC member, all factories under Crystal Group and part of our contractors use the
Higg Index, a self-assessment tool for sustainability performance. Higg Index consists of self-assessment
modules that different members along the supply chain can use to measure their environmental and
social performance, and take appropriate measures for improvement.
12
06. Innovation
We continuously innovate processes to improve the sustainability of our business. We provide resources
and technologies to coordinate with different departments on developing new products and new methods. We relentlessly improve our production technology to enhance our environmental performance
through our innovation strategy. The Guangdong Provincial Government has named us ‘Provincial
Technology Center’.
- Product Development Department
We cater to international market trends and demand through high-quality design of woven and knitted
jeans products, which are specially finished, laser-treated, embroidered or printed as customers’ requirement. We also use high-definition digital printing technology on garment to provide more new options of
design.
(产品开发部)
Product Development Department
- VAP (Value-Added Process)
We are committed to value-added technologies, such as auto-metal
stud attaching machine, which create a variety of jeans and eliminate unnecessary energy consumption and reduce production cost.
Our embroidery machines have shortened production cycle and
increased our production capacity by 30%. The heat press printing
machines attach labels on waistbands, which reduce wastewater
from traditional screen printing and again improve environmental
performance. We have also combined the technology of
eco-friendly digital printing and screen printing, which makes
printing patterns on pockets that become more resistant even after
the washing process.

- Laser R&D Center
With the value-added direction, our Laser R&D Center conducts different trails of exploring more
flexibility of the laser machines. Besides the basic washing effects, such as whisker, abrasion, and
damage, we utilize the laser technology with computerized drafting to get different unique patterns.
For digital printing, we use environmentally friendly inks which are certified under Oeko-Tex 100,
GOTS-3V. Our high-definition color printing technology enables us to continuously bring out novel
effects and patterns. It also creates value-added fashion for our customers and end-users. Digital
printing does not increase water consumption/ discharge and is more environmentally efficient than
traditional printing.
