“Shipwreck Alley.” Non-publication awards will be presented after dinner.

Maritime Triumphs and Tragedies in Northeast Michigan by Gerald Micketti, LLPC
The vast forests of northeast Michigan were a key natural resource for the area’s first settlers. Efforts were also made to market
limestone when its value was later discovered. Thousands of ships transported these goods out of Alpena and Rogers City to
markets around the world. Come hear tales of local maritime triumph and tragedy on Lake Huron.
10-11:15 a.m. Concurrent Session I (See Breakouts 1-5)
Mayday, Mayday! An Investigation of
Aviation Accidents in the Great Lakes
Conflicts on the Waves: Treaty Rights
and Commercial Fishing
Wayne Lusardi, Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Doug Craven, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians
1
In the early 1960s, with the threat of overfishing looming,
the State of Michigan took a hardline stance against NativeAmerican commercial fishing rights that were established
a century earlier. Policymakers preferred a move toward
sport fishing and recreation, while their Native-American
counterparts fought to defend their livelihoods.
A World War II trainer flown by a Tuskegee Airman is
2 among more than 500 aircraft that were lost in the Great
Lakes during the last 150 years. Speaker Wayne Lusardi will
reveal his volunteer team’s important findings
after they recently surveyed this important
part of history that lies underwater.
Dressing the World: Alpena’s
Garment Factory
The Norway Connection:
Exploring Leer’s Past
Danyeal Dorr, Besser Museum of Northeast Michigan
3
The Alpena Garment Company was once the
largest producer of reasonably priced women’s
dresses worldwide. The factory, which operated from 1920
to 1940, employed about 1,200 women and more than 100
men. Join us to learn more about occurrences during its two
decades in operation, including strikes for higher earnings.
Linda Pletcher, Leer Heritage Foundation
4
Within the boundaries of Alpena County lies a village
of Leer, which is named for the Norwegian city of Lier.
This session will address area immigration—and how the
area is more of a salad bowl than a melting pot. Personal
experiences and area artifacts will be used to help piece
together Leer’s past.
Workshop—Hooking the Visitor: Crafting Your Story to Increase Museum Traffic
Mary Beth Stutzman, Alpena Convention & Visitors Bureau
media and strong collaborative partnerships are just a few ways to spread the word about your organization or museum. This
5 Social
workshop will provide tips on how to craft your story and engage your audience in a way that will not only attract visitors but also
keep them coming back for more.
11:15-11:45 a.m. Exhibits and Networking Time
Luncheon Keynote • 11:45 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.
The Murder of the King of Presque Isle County
Mark Thompson, Presque Isle County Historical Museum
Albert Molitor, supposedly the illegitimate son of a German king, was responsible for the settlement of Rogers City in 1871.
Four years later, he met his demise after some irate farmers grew tired of the unlawful way he ran the community. The guilty
parties weren’t brought to justice until 16 years later. Come to hear about this infamous individual who found an unusual place
in Michigan history. The Annual Meeting Raffle will take place after the speaker has finished.
1:45-3p.m. Concurrent Session II (See Breakouts 6-10)
Navigating Back in Time: Tuskegee
Airmen at Oscoda During WWII
The Michigan Homefront:
Stories from World War I
David Vaughan, Air Force Institute of Technology
6
Many of the African-American pilots—later known as the
Tuskegee Airmen—who flew during World War II trained
at what was then known as Oscoda Army Air Field. Join
us for a closer look at the training program and personal
experiences of those airmen, topics that were largely
overlooked in historical accounts.
Dennis Skupinski, Michigan’s World War One Centennial
7
Michigan was involved in World War I in various ways, and
the Great War forever changed the lives of Michiganders
past and present. Join us to learn about topics such as our
state’s manufacturing and engineering contributions,
France’s influence, cooking, music, and the history of
Veterans Day.
Alpena Gangs: Outlaws in NE Michigan
8
Phillip Wiser, Alpena Police Department (Ret.)
In the late 1800s, Blinky Morgan and his gang were responsible for murdering several police officers
and innocent residents. Come learn about the backstory and demise of that gang, along with other
area gangs during the time period, including the Lyons Gang and the Purple Gang.

Tyrone Black, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
Northern Michigan sinkholes were formed long ago by the
9 collapse of underground formations, some as deep as 900
feet. Settlement in the region has noticeably impacted their
formations, which continue to change today. This virtual
tour of Northern Michigan sinkholes will describe their
history, current appearance, and impact on local legends.
Workshop—Getting Seen & Being Heard
Nancy Feldbush, Historical Society of Michigan

Nowadays, you need to be a Jack-(or Jill)-of-all-trades
to communicate with visitors, members, and the general
public. It can be daunting, especially if you haven’t had
much practice working in that area. This “crash course” will
offer some tips and suggestions so your messages can get
seen and be heard.

From Gardens to Greatness: The 11thCentury Naub-Cow-Zo-Win Shale Discs
1
1
Richard D. Clute, Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan
Initially recovered from a local suburban garden plot in the
1950s, these shale discs were at first regarded as fraudulent
archeological items. It wasn’t until the 1980s that they
were found to connect with 11th-century ceramic artifacts.
Those artifacts haven’t been found anywhere else in North
America, except for a single disc found in Ontario.
