Congratulations to the Layton CCG team 3 The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 GROUNDBREAKING Layton Breaks Ground on San Bernardino Health Complex Layton broke ground Dec. 10 on a three-story, 150,000-square-foot building on the Loma Linda University Health campus in San Bernardino, Calif. At a cost of $65 million, the project has been partially funded by a $10 million grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. “The project will obviously bring healthcare. But what San Bernardino really needs is jobs and job skills,” Dr. Richard Hart, president of Loma Linda Health told the San Bernardino County Sun. The project is just one of several Layton is involved with for Loma Linda University. The facility will house three to six-month healthcare certification programs through San Manuel Gateway College in areas like medical assisting and phlebotomy. It will also bring the area a downtown pharmacy and about 400 jobs. Congratulations to the Layton HCG team Most physician residents at Loma Linda University will also do their clinical hours at the new clinic, to be known as Loma Linda University Health – San Bernardino. The new building will give Loma Linda University health the capacity to treat over 200,000 new patients a year – up from 30,000 at their current clinic. “We have been dreaming about this for a long time and it is finally here,” Hart said. Layton will finish the project in spring 2016. 4 The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 RECENT WINS Top New Contracts Arizona • Rivulon Building 1 – Gilbert, AZ • Praxis Resources Demolition – Gilbert, AZ • Macy’s Distribution Center – Sacramento, CA CCG • Roseman University Research Lab – South Jordan, UT CSG • Simplot World Headquarters Concrete – Caldwell, ID • Missionary Training Center (MTC) Expansion – Provo, UT • Provo Power Replacement Campus – Provo, UT Hawaii • Kapolei Commons Theater (12-plex ground-up movie theater) – Kapolei, Oahu, HI • Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children 5th-11th Floor Tenant Improvement – Honolulu, Oahu, HI • Aloha Beach Resort Model Unit – Kapaa, Kauai, HI HCG • McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center Expansion and Renovation – Springfield, OR • Loma Linda University Medical Center Patient Parking Structure – Loma Linda, CA • Presbyterian / St. Luke’s Medical Center Additions and Renovations – Denver, CO ICS • Regus Station Park – Farmington, UT • Snowbird Cliff Lodge Renovation – Snowbird, UT • AAA Customer Service Center – Clearfield, UT 5 The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 AWARDS San Fernando Valley Business Journal Commercial Real Estate Awards Outlets at Tejon (pictured) Retail Category AGC of Utah Outlets at Traverse Mountain Retail Building Project of the Year AZRE Real Estate Development (RED) Awards Mesa Community College Performing Arts Center Finalist American Concrete Institute Intermountain Chapter Boeing Demolition and Refurbishment Phase One Excellence in Concrete Award, Industrial Category 6 The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 COVER STORY Cooking Up Camaraderie Layton foreman Etu Tonga prepares a roast pig as Layton hosts a Safety/Subcontractor Appreciation luncheon Jan. 20th at the National Guard Readiness Center project (CSG) in Afton, Wyoming. New construction expanded the original building from 26,000 square feet to 48,000 square feet. Continued on next page 8 The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT Star of the Sonora New Mesa Community College Performing Arts Center Continued from previous page The multifunction facility caters to the needs and aspirations of the celebrated Mesa Community College dance, theater and music programs – one of the biggest community college music departments in the nation. In keeping a musical theme, the architecture of the building is a composition inspired by the musical structure of cherished songs, creative re-purposing, and a respect for the unique qualities of the Sonoran desert. The centerpiece of the new facility is a 460-seat multipurpose theater designed to accommodate, both acoustically and 9 theatrically, a broad range of musical performances. Performances were held off-site due to inefficient space, but this theater brings art and entertainment back to the community college campus. In addition to the main theater, Layton constructed a full complement of back-of-house spaces, including performance classrooms, solo and group music practice spaces, faculty offices and a performance lobby space, which were outfitted into the old movie house. Additionally, Layton created a new entry courtyard by removing the roof from one of the old theaters located at the key intersection of the new and existing structures. Key Layton Team Members Darcy Gray, PM Jose Mendez, PM Michael Doherty, Superintendent Blake Dijkman, PE See project’s Green Features on next page The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 Mesa Community College Performing Arts Center Mesa, AZ PROJECT SPOTLIGHT New Theater Boasts Multiple Green Features Continued from previous page Alternative Transportation – The facility is located one-third mile from the city bus, and provides bike storage, showers, and changing rooms for the building’s users. Restoring Habitat – The site design promotes biodiversity by restoring 35 percent of the site area with permeable ground cover and native vegetation. Reduction of Heat Island Effect – The light colored, coated foam roof reduces heat island effect. Water Efficiency Water Efficient Landscaping – The native, drought tolerant landscape vegetation takes advantage of the seasonal rainfall and reduces the overall demand for potable water 10 use. Passive water harvesting systems are incorporated to direct roof rainwater and parking lot surface run off to the landscape areas. Water Efficient Plumbing Fixtures – Dual flush valve water closets, waterless urinals, and low-flow lavatory faucets reduce demand for potable water. Energy and Atmosphere Energy Performance – SRP approved energy efficient HVAC units, LED fixtures, daylighting, skylights, reflective foam roofing, R-30 roof insulation, and R-19 wall insulation provide a projected 12 percent to 15 percent reduction in energy use. Materials and Resources Adaptive Reuse – The project reused approximately 75% of an existing theatre, including the walls, floors, and roof for back-of-house components and classrooms, dramatically reducing construction waste. The Layton Way Vol. 1, Jan-March 2015 Recycled Content – The new carpet is made of EcoSolution Q fiber (containing 45% recycled content) and EcoWorx backing (containing 44% recycled content, 100% recyclable, and PVC-free) certified by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) for their material content, recyclability, and manufacturing efficiency. Indoor Environmental Quality Low-Emitting Materials – The carpet, tile and paints are specified with low to no VOC content. Energy Conservation – Lighting and thermal comfort controls are included for energy conservation and management. Daylighting and Garden Views – Daylighting is provided by skylights throughout the project, and views into the courtyard garden are provided from the lobby and improvisation performance space.
