July 2011 - Calloway County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention
July 2011 A new way of “Scouting” Today’s Girl Scouts are not your mother’s Girl Scouts. We have changed to meet the needs of girls everywhere – girls that juggle extracurricular activities, girls that have jobs, girls that live in poverty, girls with low self-worth, girls that simply love Girl Scouts! We are launching a Campaign for Girls in Murray-Calloway County, and it will ensure that every girl has the opportunity to be the leader she wants to be and the leader that her community and her world need her to be. Our campaign will be an opportunity to create a strong presence within Murray-Calloway County, our presence will educate the community that Girl Scouting is not just about troops anymore – we are about participating in after-school programming, in-school education, summer camp, older girls and more out-of-the-box opportunities. Girl Scouts of today provides opportunities to expand leadership through program development that teaches life skills that are disappearing from our schools. No other organization provides girls with as many ways to learn and lead as today’s Girl Scouts, and we want to meet the needs of your girls through programs in Healthy Living, Financial Literacy & STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics). Contact Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana’s Aretta Terry to begin a new journey for your daughter, organization, school or your neighborhood at aterry@kyanags.org or 270-933-3010. FuNtAsTiC FaMiLiEs! Binge Drinking- “Be the Wall” “Binge drinking causes more than 79,000 deaths in the United States every year, and more that 15% of adults say they binge drink,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in deaths caused by injuries for people under the age of 21, according to the office of the Surgeon General. Motor vehicle accidents, homicide and suicide are the most common causes of death in adolescents and young adults, and alcohol use significantly contributes to all three. In addition to these horrible scenarios, the teen brain in still developing until approximately age 25, any alcohol use before then can harm the brain as it continues to develop. Long-term alcohol abuse leads to many different physical problems because alcohol can be toxic to the cells that make up the body, and over time, the body can’t repair the damage. Now more than ever it is important for us to “Be the Wall” between the teens in our community and alcohol. This is not just for parents, any person that has any relation with teenagers in our community can “Be the Wall”. Teens are influenced by not only their parents and teachers but also by church members, neighbors, friends etc. Teens like to push the boundaries, make sure when talking with them about alcohol (or anything for that matter) Be Clear, Be Firm, and Be Consistent. Teens get so many mixed messages, lets make sure they know exactly what to do when it comes to alcohol. Fundraiser!
