New Dean of Liberal Studies Named - Dr. Laurel Messina has been
named the Dean of Liberal Studies, effective immediately. Dr. Messina has
served as Assistant Dean of Liberal Studies since 2003. Under her leadership, a
Professional Development program for Adjunct Faculty began six years ago and
continues through the support of the CTLA. Her leadership and attention to
supporting faculty in their efforts to achieve best practices in the classroom are
assets to the college community. Congratulations, Laurel!

All Committee members should plan on attending the May 16th Recognition Breakfast event, as standing
committee meetings will be held immediately following the breakfast to elect a Chair and Coordinating
Council Representative for the next academic year. All old and new Coordinating Council representatives
should plan on attending the Coordinating Council meeting on May 19th at 3 pm on the Lynn Campus,
Room LW 326.
The College extends its thanks for the commitment made by these staff for serving as members of the
governance structure. This is a significant endeavor in our continuing goal of shared decision-making and
open communication.

GIC OPEN ENROLLMENT - The GIC open enrollment period will take
place from Wednesday, April 9 through Wednesday, May 7. Please
see the notice attached to the bulletin for information on the changes
you can make during this open enrollment period. Click here to view
the GIC Health Fair Schedule.
In addition, there will be a special open enrollment for Life Insurance from April 9 to an extended
end date of June 13 for coverage effective October 1, 2014. Take advantage of this special life
insurance open enrollment to protect your family in the event of your death. During this open
enrollment, eligible state employees actively at work and employees on an approved military leave can:


Enroll for one, two or three times salary; or
Increase coverage by an additional one to three times salary (up to a maximum of 8 times salary).
Proof of good health is not required. Be sure to use the special life insurance open enrollment form.
The Group Insurance Commission (GIC) would like your input. They want to hear from you about
GIC health plan features and communications that are most important to you. Please take a few minutes

A friendly reminder from Payroll: Please refrain from changing your time on
the Monday after the pay period ends when you have to make any corrections.
You should wait until Tuesday when this occurs because it can cause you to be
underpaid. If you do change your time on Friday after the time has been
approved, please notify your supervisor right away so they can reapprove.

Updated Graduation Application - Attached to this week’s Bulletin is an updated graduation
application reflecting the addition of a June conferral date. This June date coincides with late finishing
programs, such as Practical Nursing, and aligns with students completing requirements at the close of
Summer Session One. Students with a potential June graduation date are allowed to walk at
Commencement and will be included in the Commencement Program provided they applied by March 7th.
Please recycle any outdated applications and replace with the attached.

Veterans Services would really like to give a huge shout-out to ALL the NSCC
Staff and Faculty that came to our Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser night.
It was a great night and we raised $713.00 for the Center - below is the
breakdown. We posted the raffle winner names on our FB page if people would like
to see who won.
Dinner Sales Profit: $400.00
Raffle Ticket Sales Profit: $253.00
Donation from 50/50 raffle winner: $60.00
In addition, the Veterans Club raffled off Red Sox/Yankee tickets prior to and at the event. They were
able to raise over $550.00 !!!

A New Look, Name, and Location for the TAC Newsletter
The TAC (Technology Across the Curriculum) newsletter, Mousetales, has
been reinvented as the EdTech Edge and is now available on a link located
on NSCC’s public site at:
http://www.northshore.edu/faculty_staff/resources/tac.html. This year’s
issue includes reports on projects by TAC faculty as well as articles on
Open Educational Resources, New Instructional Technology Resources and
Services, Active Learning Classroom Prototypes, and Free Electronic
Databases. We are excited that now the newsletter will be able to take
advantage of technology in a way that was not possible when the
publication was located in NSCC’s student portal. The innovations by NSCC
faculty, staff, and administration in the arena of academic technology will
now be available to the general public. We wish to thank Ejyo Katagiri
who did the layout for the EdTech Edge and Sam McGilloway as well as
Chris Dufort who posted the newsletter on the public site.

TRiO Plant Sale and Fundraiser - On May 7 TRiO will hold its annual plant sale in
Lynn and a bake sale in Danvers to raise funds for programming. This is the 4th year of
the plant sale and proceeds help to fund events like our Graduation and Recognition
Luncheon for which grant funds cannot be used.
In addition, we will have a candy sale in Lynn to help sponsor one of our students,
Daybelis De La Rosa Paulino in the Best Buddies Challenge. Best Buddies® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-toone friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities (IDD).
Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that
has grown from one original chapter to almost 1,500 middle school, high school, and college chapters
worldwide.
We appreciate your support of these two fundraisers. Thank you.

this summer! An externship experience offers faculty the opportunity to deepen their
understanding of the field in which they teach. It may also provide faculty with the
opportunity to explore new content areas for curriculum development and/or student
workforce readiness and career preparation.

Service with a Community Based Organization
Fellowships include a $1,200 stipend! Deadline May 2, 2014
Full- and part-time faculty members who are interested in working with the community have the
opportunity to develop a service project with a local community-based organization and complete a 40hour fellowship over the Fall semester.

SPRING WILL COME ONE OF THESE DAYS -- PROMISE!
JOIN THE NSCC’S FOURTH ANNUAL DAY OF SERVICE TUESDAY, MAY 20 – AND GET
YOURSELF IN THE MOOD!
Calling all faculty, staff and students to volunteer to help in the restoration of beautiful Pine Grove
Cemetery, a Lynn landmark that the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) recently approved for
nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
If it’s a sunny day, we will clean the grounds in the oldest section of the cemetery as well as plant flowers
in flowerbeds that have not had flowers for over 20 years. If the weather is wet, we will work to clean up
the Rhodes Chapel.
Our two work parties – a morning shift from 9:30 to 1 p.m and an afternoon shift from noon – 3:30 p.m.
– will enjoy a picnic lunch break (from 12-1 p.m.) and a chance to learn about some of Pine Grove’s
history. The cemetery trees and flowering shrubs will be in full bloom and NSCC Adjunct Professor Julia
Greene will give a short tour and highlight the interesting stories of the famous folk buried there. Lunch
is on us!

NAMI Walk - Make a difference in the lives of people with mental illness! In 2014, tens
of thousands of concerned citizens in more than 83 communities across the nation will join
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and walk together to raise money and
awareness about our country's need for a world-class treatment and recovery system for
people with mental illness.
I invite you to walk with me and Team NSCC on Saturday May 10 or to donate to support

It’s “Bowl-A-Rama” Time Pottery Sale/Fundraiser
When: Sunday, June 8, 2014 Rain or Shine
Where: 21 Swampscott Ave., Peabody, MA
Time: 12:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Cost: $20
This year, I will be riding in my 15th Pan Mass Challenge on August 2nd and 3rd. My goal
for this year is to raise $6000 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute by riding 170 miles
from Wellesley to Provincetown. The PMC now donates 100% of rider-raised funds
directly to the cause. To date, the PMC has raised $414,000,000!

also take home a handmade bowl (or other piece of pottery) as our way of thanking you
