In an age where we are inundated with research of how to build better brains and create
smarter children, we may be forgetting that a child is much more than a cognitive system;
he/she are a whole human being. We forget that our duty is to be one of the many people in
children’s lives who will help guide them in their journey towards discovering who they are.
F-AM2 Ladybug, Ladybug, What Do You See? - Make & Take
Presented by: Judy Baillie and Debbie Eberth, Ontario Early Years Centre: Brant
Ladybug, ladybug, what do you see? I see a great workshop for you and for me!
What child isn’t excited to explore the magical world of insects and backyard critters? Children will be more than
motivated to learn as you return to the classroom with a variety of activities, stories and games featuring their favourite
topic – creepy crawly creatures! All participants will receive a ladybug ottoman that you will further develop and fill
with props as a classroom tool for when the children show an interest in the backyard critters!
F-AM3 Onkwehonwe Traditional Teaching – Circle of Life
Presented by: Grandmother Renee Thomas-Hill
One will gain an understanding of the Onkwehonwe (Iroquois) Traditional Cycle of Life. Grandmother Renee will guide
you on the Sacred Journey of Life through; storytelling, interaction activities, and the reclaiming of the purpose of
creation.

Presented by: Cheryl Smith, Ontario Early Years Centre: Brant
Let’s chat about and examine issues facing RECE’s today. We will explore the issues of diversity by examining vignettes
from the College of ECE’s. Using the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics as set out by the College, we will
reflect on our practices.
F-AM5 Rethinking Problem Behaviours: The Connection Between Behaviour Regulation & Language
Presented by: Shannon Cardy Schein & Paula Malecki, Speech-Language Pathologists, Talking Tots
Lansdowne Children’s Centre
Undesired behaviours and language difficulties often go hand in hand. Participants will learn about this relationship as
well as strategies to assist children in feeling calm, alert and ready to learn. The benefits of using visuals will be discussed
as well as speech and language milestones as they relate to behaviour.

Workshop Choices for Friday, April 1 - Afternoon (F-PM)
F-PM1 The Fourth Moment
Featured Speaker: Marc Battle, ECE Instructor, Red River College
I once read in a book on Eastern philosophy about a moment called the fourth moment. It is a
moment not rooted in the past or the future or even the present but in the here and now; where
you recognize where you are at this very moment; where you truly experience life and practice
living. Such a moment happens during music time with children.
In this workshop you will explore your own voice and discover the fun and joy in songs. As adults, we feel self-conscious
about our singing due to the feeling that we are being judged. The only participant who evaluates your singing is the
child in your care. The child’s criteria is that they want to participate and observe an adult enjoying a song. To sing with
another person is an intimate experience. To leave this out of your interactions with children deprives a vital aspect of
your relations with them.
F-PM2 Picture This - Make & Take
Presented by: Patty Bester and Lisa Romano, Ontario Early Years Centre: Brant
Have you ever thought about the benefits that real picture programming can bring to your program? Real photographs
enhance children’s understanding of their world. It helps them to make connections to what’s happening around them.
Through making props, activities and games you will discover how to engage and build those connections with young
children.
F-PM3 Finding You Within Yourself
Presented by: Michelle Kwasnik, Navigate Life Positively (NLP)
Finding you within yourself is a NLP-based experiential workshop. If you want to learn and practice new, fun and
conscious ways to connect with yourself then this workshop is for you. Begin healing the emotional and physical issues
that impact daily life through our time spent together.
F-PM4 Changes to the Nutrition Standard in the CCEYA
Presented by: Barb Bartle, Public Health Dietitian, Brant County Health Unit
This workshop will discuss the nutrition requirements in the new CCEYA legislation (Child Care and Early Years Act).
Bring a copy of your centre’s menu with you. You will have an opportunity to review your menu to see if any changes are
needed.
F-PM5 Anxiety in the Early Years
Presented by: Dianne Wdowczyk-Meade, Mental Health Lead and Connie McAllister, Early Years
Consultant, Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board
The early years are often filled with wonder and excitement in anticipation of learning new things and making new
connections. With that, fears and worries might present themselves. Participants will explore the difference between
adaptive and maladaptive anxieties and learn strategies to promote resiliency and mentally healthy classrooms.

In this motivational keynote address Lisa shares the powerful story of her first day of school. Through active and
engaging storytelling Lisa brings you back to her first day, taking you on a grand tour of Miss Mary’s Nursery
School. And, in the style she has become famous for, she shares many observations, lessons and anecdotes about
how early childhood has changed along the way. Lisa will share the sights, sounds and smells of the place where, at
the young age of three, she decided to become a teacher and identifies the how, and why, that one day solidified her
decision to become an educator. This inspiring keynote gets participants back in touch with their personal how
and why. It gets them excited and gets them thinking: If it WAS their only day, what will they remember?

S-AM2 This Is Not A Box, This Is Not A Stick! - Make & Take

At first glance, they may just look like boxes and sticks, but oh they are so much more!
This workshop is inspired by, Antoinette Portis’ books, Not A Box and Not A Stick, which are a springboard for
imaginative play with preschool and school-age children. In this literacy based make and take, you will learn ways to
bring these books to life and will leave thinking outside the box!
S-AM3 Using First Nation Literature and Arts in Early Childhood Programs
Presented by: Tanya Leary, Kindergarten Teacher, Hamilton Wentworth District School Board
This hands-on, interactive workshop will spark your creativity! Learn about infusing First Nation literature and art into
your early childhood program. Leary is the author of, The Three Little Porcupines, a fractured fairy tale with a First Nation
twist. Through this story, participants will be introduced to a variety of resources, early language activities, and nature
awareness for the youngest and young at heart.
S-AM4 Teaching With Intention
Presented by: Barb Radmore, Ontario Early Years Centre: Brant
Intentional educators use their knowledge and expertise to plan activities that are thoughtful and deliberate.
Thoughtful and deliberate planning allows the intentional educator to show the learning to parents in meaningful ways.
Being an intentional educator is an on-going practice. Let’s start the process together as we explore strategies and
approaches to teaching with intention!

S-PM1 The Importance of Early Experiences: How playing IS Kindergarten readiness!

During this session Lisa will identify the seven things we need to do with children each day. These
seven things make up the foundation that supports the house of higher learning. There is nothing
wrong with the “academic” expectations within this house: reading, writing, math… the trouble is
that many early childhood educators are being pressured to build a house where there is no
foundation. And you do not need to be an architect to know that if you build where there is no
foundation, the house will come crashing down! Playing is “getting them ready” and through an
investigation of each of the “seven things,” Lisa shows you how. By making time to create, move,
sing, discuss, observe, read and play we are getting children ready not just for kindergarten, but for life!

Enabling children to develop a sense of belonging as part of a group and to have the skills needed to self-regulate their

Parents and Early Childhood Educators play an important role in a child’s early learning. This workshop is based on the
Early Learning Canada © program. It is filled with ideas, strategies, and activities to use with children in order to
develop their lifelong learning skills. Topics we will cover include: Helping Children Discover Their World Through Science
and Helping Children Become Better Readers and Writers. All participants will receive a free copy of the Early Learning
Canada book as part of this workshop.
S-PM4 Kids Have Stress Too! ©
Presented by: Cheryl Smith, Ontario Early Years Centre: Brant
Kids Have Stress Too! © is a program designed to assist caregivers and educators to understand stress and to help them
teach the children in their care ways of managing stress in their lives. Stress is a normal part of life and it occurs daily!
Children however, do not have the life experiences of adults to help them cope with stress. This workshop will look at
the seven key concepts of “Kids Have Stress Too!” and offer strategies to help reduce a child’s reaction to stress.
S-PM5 Why Do You Turn Your Music Down When You Are Lost?
Presented by: Debbie Eberth and Melodie Spencer, Ontario Early Years Centre: Brant
Sound familiar? Does this happen to you? Often we do things without even being aware that we are doing them or why
we are doing them. So what if you could change that? This introductory session on mindfulness will explore how to live
more in the moments than rush through the minutes. Learn ways to educate without distractions, with a clearer mind
and an open heart. Find out the answer to the question in the title and discover a world that has been there even when
the music is on!
