Friday, September 2 at 7:30 p.m. Viewers will enjoy a special look back at highlights from the past 30 years on WYES’ weekly local arts and entertainment program hosted and produced by Peggy Scott Laborde. Initially airing in March 1986 and running for almost two years on WLAE-TV, the program moved, complete with set, over to WYES in January 1988. During that time WLAE had ceased local production and WYES general manager Mike Labonia saw the need for this type of program in the community. For many years the late theatre critic Al Shea covered the performing arts scene. He started his long television career at WDSU and was considered to be among America’s first television broadcast entertainment critics. Debuting that first season and still covering the visual arts scene for STEPPIN’ OUT is Louisiana Life Magazine art columnist John Kemp. In addition to the weekly overview of the arts and since the program’s first season, Mardi Gras historians Errol Laborde and Arthur Hardy have previewed the annual celebration with STEPPIN’ OUT “It’s Carnival Time.” Appearing on the program on a regular basis are food writer Poppy Tooker and theatre critic Alan Smason. Among the program’s occasional guests are WWNO’s book reviewer Susan Larson and WWL movie reviewer Alfred Richard, who provides updates on the movie and television production scenes. Tom Gregory is reporter/director. Ashli Richard Morris is the associate producer. Kelsi Schreiber is production associate. Editor is Larry Roussarie. ht otlig ld sp s,” u o w t ne w tha s sce a sho ming art rde. r o f r eed d perfo abo san ott L n re wa visual a Peggy Sc e h t t ng ke d hos rishi elt li ays f ever flou ducer an w l a o I “ ity’s r, pr our c id creato sa RIGHT, TOP: From left, movie critic Alfred Richard, art columnist John Kemp, Peggy Scott Laborde; food writer Poppy Tooker and theatre critic Alan Smason. D3 WYES - T V / C h a nn e l 1 2 P r og r a m G u id e The Prytania Theatre: WYES Program Guide • September 2016 Surviving Father Time and Mother Nature Robert Brunet with his father Rene Brunet, Jr. Premieres Saturday, September 10 at 7pm & 11pm Repeats Saturday, September 18 at noon; Saturday, Sept. 24, 11pm & Friday, Sept. 30 at 10pm — Produced and directed by A. J. Roquevert — Operating the Uptown New Orleans theatre is 95-year-old Rene Brunet, Jr. and his son Robert. Since 1914 the Prytania has had a place in the history of local moviegoing. During its life the Prytania offered silent films and then talkies. The movie house is immortalized in John Kennedy Toole’s 1981 Pulitzer Prize winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces as one of the irascible Ignatius J. Reilly’s favorite places. Constructed by the partnership of Jacobs and Landry, the theatre has had numerous owners and suffered from two fires. The Landmark Theatre Corporation ran the Prytania for over 20 years as an art film house, closing in 1996. The Brunets reopened the theatre the next year. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the city and the movie theatre but thanks to the perseverance of the Brunets, it remains open. The current owner of the building is John Gish, who purchased the structure in 2003. Gratefully the Brunets have a 50-year lease. A recent renovation includes state-of-the-art digital based projection and audio. This documentary presents the history and challenges of operating a single screen theatre. Among those interviewed are local film theatre historian Jack Stewart and the late Rose Kern, who worked in the local movie theatre business for eight decades. In addition to this documentary, producer/director A.J. Roquevert previously produced “No More Joy –The Rise and Fall of New Orleans Theatres.” D4 DIAL 12 | September 2016 Photos from the Brunet Collection and Peggy Scott Laborde WYE S- T V/ C h a nn e l 1 2 P r og r a m G u id e WYES presents WYES Program Guide • September 2016 Collette’s Rediscover Cuba: A Cultural Exploration April 25 – May 3, 2017 9 Days • 17 Meals: 8 Breakfasts, 3 Lunches, 6 Dinners Highlights: Che Guevara Memorial & Museum, Cayo Santa Maria Island, Sugar Museum, Remedios, Cuban Cigar Factory, Cienfuegos, Botanical Gardens, Havana, Cuban Fine Arts Museum, Casa Fuster, Literacy Museum, Salsa Dancing, Finca Vigia - Ernest Hemingway Home Per Person Rates*: Double $5,599/ Single $6,399 Included in Price: Round Trip Air from New Orleans Intl Airport, Air Taxes and Fees/Surcharges, Hotel Transfers Not included in price: Cancellation Waiver and Insurance of $280 per person *All Rates are Per Person and are subject to change A portion of the trip benefits WYES!
