Dance. They had 84 men (dads, grandpas,

Greece Service Unit had a Valentine's Day
Party hosted by Junior Troop 60266 on Feb. 9.
They made Valentine's Day cards that will be
sent to the Golisano Children's Hospital and
nursing homes in Greece, NY.
Girl Scouts in Chautauqua County recently
frosted cookies for the Chautauqua Adult Day
Care Centers, Inc. in partnership with United
Way. The signs in the photo say “Thank You!”

Product Program
Have you heard about the Drive-Thru Weekend?
It’s a fun way to engage troops within a service unit to sell
cookies within their community without going door-to-door.
WHEN: March 12 & 13
HOW: Within your community find a parking lot to set up a
cookie drive-thru.
 Have the troop schedule 2 to 4 hour spots to fill the weekend.
 Place the locations, dates, and times in SNAP+. We will
advertise it on the GSUSA “FIND COOKIES NOW” Cookie
Locator.
WHY: Use it as a community service event for the Service Unit supporting the “Cookie Share” program.

(10% increase from last year)
Many customers love to support the cookie program by donating boxes of cookies to the military
personnel overseas and WNY. This year, we are very pleased with the generous support from our
community for the 2016 Cookie Share program. Over 12,800 cookie packages (a 10% increase from
last year) have been donated thus far.
Customers may still donate to the 2016 Cookie Share program. Those share packages can be
brought to any Girl Scout Service Center by April 2 and we will deliver them to the
participating locations throughout WNY.

Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath give girls an opportunity to attend their place of
worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout. If a place of worship is the group sponsor, girls may
perform a service, such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony. These days can also be
a time when girls explore other faiths.
Girl Scout Birthday, March 12, commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low
officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia.
Each Shop has a different variety of patches including ones for the cookie season
or they can order any by special request to celebrate these special days; here are a
few examples:

Girl Scout Educational Scholarship
The Girl Scout Educational Scholarship was established in 1997 and recognizes the achievement and character of
graduating Senior Girl Scouts who have achieved their Silver and/or Gold Award. Scholarships are awarded based on a
combination of academic achievements as well as Girl Scout involvement and accomplishments.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered a candidate for the Educational Scholarship:

Must be a graduating, female high school senior in 2016;

Must be a currently registered member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America through the Girl Scouts of
Western New York council and have a minimum of five years of membership in any Girl Scout organization;

Must have attained the Silver or Gold Award;

Must be accepted into an institution of higher learning for the Fall of 2016;

Must demonstrate the ideals of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
Kim Welsh Memorial Scholarship
The Kim Welsh Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 through the generosity of Carol and Allan Welsh in
memory of their daughter, Kimberley. Scholarships will be awarded to Girl Scouts who have completed their Gold Award
and who plan to attend an institution of higher learning in the year in which the application is submitted.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered a candidate for the Kim Welsh Memorial Scholarship:

Be a currently registered member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America through the Girl Scouts of
Western New York council.

Received the Girl Scout Gold Award for this scouting year or have completed their project and have the final
approval of the Gold Award Committee on or before March 18, 2016.

Be a graduating high school senior, college freshman or beginning some form of higher learning in the year she is
applying for the scholarship.

Have demonstrated leadership ability in Girl Scouting and is able to document strong participation in extracurricular
activities as well as service to the community.

Submit a reference from an adult, who is not a relative, but who knows the applicant personally.

It’s a Whole New World in NYC!
Join GSWNY and Camp Seven Hills for a trip to NYC! It’s a Whole New World in NYC will be Session 2 July 10 to 15, 2016
Girls will travel to NYC to see the Broadway production of Aladdin and partake in a Disney “Broadway Classroom” with
professionals from the cast of Aladdin. Time will be left to visit the Central Park Zoo, Rockefeller Plaza, Girl Scouts of the
USA headquarters and Time Square for a little shopping.
$530 per person (includes one week of camp, trip, food, Broadway Classroom patch, and all activities)

Troop leaders if you are looking for a great troop camp experience to do with your girls don’t forget about Core camping
at Camp Timbercrest! As we all know troop camping is a great way for leaders and their girls to experience the wonders
and excitement of the outdoors. At GSWNY we want to provide as many opportunities as possible for leaders and girls
to experience the great outdoors. Core camp can provide that experience. Need a camp catalog – download your
copy at http://www.gswny.org/registration or call our office at 1 888 937 6410 to request a catalog.
Core Camp is the perfect setting for leaders who want to take their girls troop camping without the responsibility of providing program, meals or having trained/certified adults. At Camp Timbercrest we will do it all for you. All troop leaders
have to do is provide the necessary child to adult supervision ratio. You and your girls can participate in as much or as
little programming as you choose. Look for dates and programs themes coming soon in the 2016 camp catalog. Here is
what our leaders had to say about their first time core camping experience. “My girls loved it and can't wait to go
back”, “I thought it was amazing, much better than the over the weekend troop camping you use to offer.” “It's
great for all and a super great chance for the girls to see what camp is like”, “We had a wonderful time! I'd go

GSWNY Camp Adventure Club!
GSWNY’s Camp Adventure Club is the perfect setting for girls that want that exhilarating outdoor
adventure. Through this club girls will learn outdoor skills, practice the seven principles of Leave No
Trace, experience some amazing trips and form lifelong friendships. Girls who join the Camp
Adventure Club will receive their GSWNY Camp Adventure Club patch and rider for each trip that they
participate in. Girls should have good physical endurance when participating in a GSWNY Camp
Adventure Club trip.
Did you know that girls that are members are eligible to participate in GSWNY Camp Adventure Club trips. This past
summer girls participated in a one week and two week backing program and a two week canoeing program. Look for
more GSWNY Camp Adventure Club trips coming this spring and summer.
Want to be a member? Our next GSWNY Camp Adventure Skills day program is scheduled for April 30, 2016 at Camp
Timbercrest from 10 a.m. to 4p.m. So don’t delay sign up your girls now so that they too can become members in the
hip GSWNY Camp Adventure Club!.

Camp Seven Hills Alumni Weekend!
Our 85th celebration last summer was such a huge hit. It was wonderful reconnecting
with old friends and making new ones. We want the fun to continue for this summer
and so we are calling all of our family, friends and alumni back to Camp Seven Hills for
our first annual Seven Hills Alumni Weekend. Swimming, boating, horseback riding,
ropes course, arts and crafts, tours, laughter, evening campfires, candle lit path
ceremony and lots of s’mores will be a part of this fun weekend which will also include
the dedication of our new parking lot luggage shelter which was graciously supported
through the Seven Hills Alumni. Ropes course and horseback riding will be on a firstcome, first serve basis and will be an additional fee payable at camp.

Camp Seven Hills Family Rafting Trip
Spend a glorious day experiencing one of life’s great adventures...whitewater rafting. Check
into Camp Seven Hills Saturday morning and then hop on the bus to Letchworth State Park.
Experience the wonders of Letchworth State Park, as certified guides from Adventure Calls
Outfitters lead you on a thrilling five-mile Class 2 whitewater rafting trip down the gorge. This
is perfect for the first-time rafter. Spend approximately 4 hours on the water enjoying the
beauty that Letchworth has to offer. After a hard day of rafting and exploring take the bus
back to Camp Seven Hills for dinner and an engaging evening campfire. Families will be
placed in our platform cabin or tent units or you may bring your own tent to pitch if you would
like. Participants must weigh at least 45 pounds. Fee includes rafting, all equipment,
transportation, lodging and meals.

OUTDOOR PROGRAM
Older Girls Needed
Calling all older troops! We are looking for older girl troops who are interested in assisting/providing programs to younger girl troops. This is a great way to share your knowledge, be a mentor to a younger girl and work on your leadership
skills. If you are interested please email programs@gswny.org and indicate if you are interested in providing your services for program or outdoor program.
Me and My Guy Snowshoe
There is a program correction for the Me and My Guy Snowshoe program at Tift Nature Preserve. The program description on page17 states Friday, March 18, 2016. The actual date is Saturday, March 5, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Winter Carnival Overnight and Winter Carnival
Due to the inclement weather we had on February 12 and 13, 2016, the Winter Carnival overnight and Winter Carnival
was postponed to Friday and Saturday March 4th and 5th. March 4-5 for the Winter Carnival overnight and Saturday,
March 5th for the Winter Carnival day event. Registration has been extended and spots are still open.

Car Care with Geico
With the help of Geico staff, come earn your Car Care badge in one day! You will have the
opportunity to learn car maintenance skills such as how to change a tire and how to use jumper
cables. You’ll also gain a better understanding of how to stay safe on the road and learn what
to do in an emergency. After the day you will be well on your way to being ready to hit the road.

Program Aide Training
This training is designed for Cadettes who are interested in working with younger Girl Scouts in a troop and/or council
program, or at Summer Day Camp. Girls will explore their leadership potential, learn about the different stages of girl
development, and discover how to use the Journeys to plan exciting activities for younger girls. Girls will also learn how
to plan appropriate outdoor activities and help keep younger girls safe in an outdoor environment.
Girls must have completed or be registered to attend this training at the time they apply for a day camp program aide position.

Spring is the perfect season for kites and camp is one of the best places to fly them. Learn about the history of kites and
the science behind making them fly. Learn some fun songs and games about kites. Make a spring time snack and, finally, you will make and decorate your own kite and try it out outdoors. A fun patch is included.

Girls’ Initiative
2016 After School Literacy Program & Voices of Experience
Thank you for your interest in The Girls’ Initiative, a cooperative effort of the Women’s Foundation of Genesee Valley
with Nazareth College, area schools, and community organizations whose goals are to provide experiences that create a
vision of hope and change in the lives of teen girls by inspiring them to overcome obstacles and succeed in life with the
help of women role models and mentors onsite at the college and in after school literacy programs. The program uses
positive role models through literature and culminates in the Voices of Experience Program in May where women from
our community share their stories of overcoming their own challenges to become successful.
The book selected for the 2015-16 Literacy Program is The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Dorrow, a story that
succeeds as both a modern coming-of-age and relevant social commentary. We are excited to share this work with you
and your students.
Participation in the Literacy Program is really simple:

The Foundation provides books for the girls to read either individually or together during the school year.

Adult mentor/ Group leader must attend an info session to pick up books, discussion guide, and to get an
overview about the program.

Adult mentor/ Group leader also agrees to confirm that the girls reading the books will attend Voices of
Experience on May 17th, 5:30 to 8:30pm at Nazareth Arts Center.
This program is highly regarded by educators, school counselors, parents, and mentors; we sincerely hope your girls

To pick up your books and enroll in the program, we invite you to attend an informal information session on
Thursday, March 10, 2016 from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The meeting location is Rochester Childfirst Network, 941
South Ave (across from Highland Hospital), Rochester NY 14620. Park in the back parking lot and come through
the door near the chain link fencing. Someone will be there to meet you.

Maple Sugar Festival
Kids are FREE!
Bring your scout troop to this great scout-friendly event.
Smell the delicious aroma of simmering maple syrup, as you set off into the woods in search of sweet adventure. Hike through our recently expanded sugarbush, learn how to identify maple trees, try hands-on activities using some of the tools used to tap trees. Grab some delicious maple cotton candy or maple popcorn. (additional
charge)
After your visit to maple sugar camp, head out to the Historic Village. Meet the Cooper and Tinsmith who crafted items
to collect sap in the 19th-century. See demonstrations of candle making and tree tapping. Taste 19th-century dishes
made with delicious maple syrup.
Moveable Museum Programs
If your troop can’t come to us, we can come to you! Moveable Museum Programs can bring a hands-on 19th-century experience to your meeting place. Gather several troops or your Service Unit and take a trip back in time. Some of the fascinating programs are History in the Kitchen, 19th-Century Fashion and Wildlife of Genesee Country and much more.

Girl Scout "Art Gallery" Patch Program at Women Create
A limited number of Art Gallery patches will be available for $3.00 each at the Dykeman Young
Gallery, 100 East Second Street, Jamestown, New York during the Women Create exhibit
which runs from April 15 through May 11, 2016. Women Create is a juried biennial art exhibit
feature the work of female artists from western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, and
northeastern Ohio.
Girl Scouts are encouraged to visit the exhibition on the third floor of the building where a card
listing patch activities can be found. Complete at least four of the activities, then head down to
the 2nd floor where you can purchase your patches.
Parents and troop leaders may like to know ahead of time that three of the pieces selected by the juror for inclusion in
the show depict female nudes in classic, tasteful poses. Nude figures have been depicted in artwork for hundreds of
years and continue to be subject matter for today's artists.

Create is run by volunteers with rather full lives, so please allow plenty of lead time when posing questions.

This is an exciting time for Girl Scouts!
Have you heard? There’s a real buzz around the K–5 Customer Engagement Initiative (CEI), which promises to help us
provide a better experience for girls, families and volunteers!
CEI focuses on improving our systems and processes to make joining and volunteering for Girl Scouts fast and easy.
With a renewed emphasis on customer service, our members will get questions answered quickly, spending less time
on paperwork and more time on fun!
But we can’t make this change without you! We’re looking to engage volunteers, parents, and girls as we assess our
current processes and create amazing new ways of work. There’s lots of ways to participate - from discussions at inperson meetings to virtual focus groups to our phone-in suggestion box. Help us give you the best experience possible
by shaping tomorrow’s GSWNY.

Volunteerism
First Aid and CPR Classes - These are standard American Heart Association or American Red Cross First Aid and
CPR courses offered by certified Girl Scout volunteers and include adult and child CPR and basic first aid. Certification
for First Aid and CPR is valid for 2 years. REGISTRATION CLOSES 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE CLASS, NO
EXCEPTIONS. IF THE MINIMUM OF PARTICIPANTS IS NOT MET THE CLASS WILL BE CANCELLED.
