WAT E R F O R D A RT I S A N TO U R 2 0 1 4
Waterford City, Ireland is home to the
House of Waterford Crystal, where skilled
Waterford Crystal artisans carry on centuries
old traditions of mouth blowing, hand
finishing, sculpting and engraving.
The rich Waterford heritage spans centuries,
with origins that date to 18th century
Ireland. Through the years, our reputation
for design and innovation has elevated the
Waterford brand to a position of status as
the world’s finest crystal.
The House of Waterford Collection pays
tribute to the skilful hands of Waterford
Crystal’s most masterful craftsmen. These
crystal pieces are created to satisfy the
imagination, pursue an inspiration or simply
explore the silvery sparkling medium that
has challenged artists for centuries.

Our guest Artisan in 2014 is Fred Curtis. What started
out as a summer job for 15-year-old Fred Curtis turned
into a vocation, leading him to his current position as
Master Sculptor and Designer at the House of Waterford
Crystal and worldwide ambassador for the world’s most
beloved crystal.
In 1971, Fred Curtis applied for a summer job at
Waterford, and subsequently enrolled in a five year
apprenticeship as a glass cutter. He qualified with
distinction and achieved the status of Master Cutter in
ten years.
His early experiments with sculpting little gifts for family
and friends from solid pieces of discarded crystal did not
go unnoticed and in 1986 he was asked to establish a
new sculpting department at Waterford Crystal.
Over the years Fred designed and sculpted some of
Waterford’s most beautiful trophies and presentation
pieces for some of world’s most famous people, including
Mother Theresa of Calcutta, US Presidents Barack
Obama and Bill Clinton, golfing legend Greg Norman
and actor Clint Eastwood to name just a few.
Fred continues to design and sculpt crystal pieces
of extraordinary beauty. He enjoys the freedom of
expression at Waterford that allows him to create
individual works of art in crystal that further enhance
his expertise as a true Master.

Lismore Castle Vase
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
Originally built in 1185 by King John of England, Lismore Castle was
owned by Sir Walter Raleigh then Richard Boyle, First Earl of Cork, before
passing to the Fourth Duke of Devonshire in 1753. This significant local
landmark is commemorated in John Connolly’s Lismore Castle Collection,
meticulously crafted at the House of Waterford Crystal. The Lismore Castle
Vase is immediately recognised for its distinct, toothed rims, cut to echo the

Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
The main cut pattern used to decorate the Victorian Wicker Centrepiece is
among the most complicated for our craftsmen to reproduce. The tremendous
precision that is required to create pieces that sparkle like diamonds is the
specialty of The House of Waterford Crystal, where the traditional of hand
made crystal is alive and well.

MUSEUM collection
The tradition of glass-making in Waterford goes back to the 1720’s
when fine crystal was made in a small bottle factory outside the city
walls. Waterford’s fame for the manufacture of finely cut crystal,
however, began when a glass house was built within the walls in 1783.
Distinctive early Waterford patterns have been identified and recorded
by scholars. Their task has been made easier through the survival
of the working drawings of Samuel Miller, the foreman cutter in
Waterford in the 1820’s-30’s. This archive, as well as, a treasury of
historic pieces that reside in museums and private collections, has
provided the inspiration for this new collection of objects.

Museum Epergne
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
An epergne is a type of table centrepiece that was often made of glass.
Featuring a large centre basket, it was used to hold any type of food or
dessert. During the 18th and 19th centuries, an epergne was a fancy way
to display side dishes, fruits or sweetmeats, or any variety of finger food. As
a testimony to our history, the artisans at the House of Waterford Crystal
have created a modern reinterpretation of an 18th century Georgian
centrepiece featuring exemplary hand-cutting that will look very much at
home on today’s table, as it did in the 1700’s.

Museum Ice Pail
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
In the 18th Century, the gentry managed to cool wine or fruit at banquets.
Cold water from mountain streams or ice cut from lakes was placed in
“fruit coolers” or “ice pails” designed to keep things cold. The House of
Waterford Crystal has re-created one of these objects in crystal as part of the
second Museum Collection. Dedicated to the preservation of ancient crystal
making techniques and skills, the House of Waterford artisans lovingly
recreate these historic objects from our past.

Museum Footed Cake Plate
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
Accomplished hostesses in the 18th century Europe presented their
guests with a feast for their eyes, as well as, their palates. During the
dessert course, tables were laden with cakes, tarts, puddings and trifles all
served on footed servers known as salvers. The talented crystal artisans at
the House of Waterford Crystal have been inspired to create a dazzling
reproduction of this object in the finest crystal. Lavishly hand-cut, this
museum-quality reproduction showcases the great skill and talent of these
exceptional crystal artists who are still working in Ireland today.

Museum Oval Bowl
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
In the Georgian period of the 18th Century beautiful oval bowls were
often used for serving fruits and small food items or for displaying sweets.
These types of bowls were often part of the table setting, along with a lavish
tea service that was common at this time. The crystal designers at House
of Waterford Crystal in Ireland have created an impressive hand-cut and
delicately scalloped version that showcases the unique talents of the expert
crystal makers who continue to hone their craft today, in much the same
way they did in the 1700’s.

Museum Inkwell
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
An inkwell is a small jar or container, often made of glass, that was used for
holding ink in a place convenient for the person who was writing. In the
18th Century, the writer would have used a brush or quill to dip into the
inkwell, as needed. A necessary element of any fine gentleman’s daily life,
this serves as inspiration for the House of Waterford Crystal’s museumquality reproduction. Made of the finest hand-blown and hand-cut crystal,
the artisans at Waterford showcase 18th century hand-made techniques,
skills unique in the modern age.

Atlantic herring Platter
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
House of Waterford Crystal designer Billy Briggs draws his inspiration for
his crystal fish platter from the skeletal bones of the Atlantic Herring fish.
Herringbone refers to a pattern that consists of columns of short parallel
lines, with all the lines in one column sloping in one direction and the lines
in the next column sloping in the other direction. The resulting pattern
resembles the bones in a fish.

IRIS PITCHER
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
In Greek mythology, Iris is the goddess of the sea and the sky. As the sun
unites Earth and heaven, Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with
the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other and into the
depths of the sea and the underworld. She carries a caduceus or winged staff
and by command of Zeus, the king of the gods, she carries an ewer of water
from the River Styx.
Designer Matt Kehoe was inspired by Iris’ ewer when he designed the
distinctive Iris Pitcher. Hand-blown Waterford Crystal is magnificently
shaped and cut at The House of Waterford Crystal in Ireland.

SALmon of knowledge Chalice Pair
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
Salmon features prominently in The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn and was
used as inspiration by Billy Briggs for the Salmon of Knowledge Chalice
Pair. According to the story, an ordinary salmon ate nine hazelnuts that fell
into the Well of Wisdom from nine hazel trees that surrounded the well. By
this act, the salmon gained all of the world’s knowledge. Moreover, the first
person to eat its flesh would, in turn, gain this knowledge. After seven years
of fishing for it, Finn Eces caught the salmon and gave the fish to Fionn, his
servant, with instructions not to eat it. Fionn cooked the salmon, but when
he touched the fish with his thumb to see if it was cooked, he burnt his
finger on a drop of hot cooking fish fat. Fionn sucked on his burned finger
to ease the pain. Little did Fionn know that all of the salmon’s wisdom had
been concentrated into that one drop of fish fat.

saleens Scallop Platter
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
A lifelong affinity with the small sandy beach of Saleens on the Waterford
Coastline provided designer Martin Ryan with the inspiration for his latest
creation, the Saleens Scallop Platter.
This uniquely shaped centrepiece features a connecting circle of delicately
cut scallops created by the use of an array of traditional cutting modes
synonymous with the Waterford style. The pattern is created using a series of
flared rosettes and thumb print olives which are separated by rich diamond
triangles. Two rings support the scallops on a row of sea pebbles and the
handled piece is completed with the addition of a beautiful scalloped rim,
the perfect complement to complete this master craftsmen’s piece.

CLIONA Decanter Set
Designed and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
Designer Tom Cooke has dedicated his decanter and goblet pair to Cliona,
a sea-goddess of love and beauty. Lore has it that she left the other worldly
island of Tir Tairngire (“the land of promise”) to be with her mortal lover,
Ciabhán, but was taken by a wave as she slept due to the music played by a
minstrel in Glandore Harbor. The tide, there, is known as Tonn Chlíodhna,
or “Clíona’s Wave”. It is said that the god of the sea intervened by sending
another wave on which she was returned, preventing her from drowning.

The Kylie Collection is all about creating floralscapes in the lush layouts that made Jeff Leatham
a luxury living favourite. The extra-large, deep cut Jeff Leatham refers to as his “stud cut” makes
this collection truly luxurious. Perfect for long stemmed flowers, it can also be stacked to add
depth. Each vase comes complete with a stacking band to prevent chipping and add stability.
