Snohomish Aquatic Center enjoyed by everyone
By MELANIE
RUSSELL
Words used to describe
the Snohomish Aquatic Center include “magical,” “truly
great” and “an aquatic wonderland.”
Aquatic wonderland is certainly one way to describe
the 52,000-square-foot facility that for many is a dream
come true for the community.
Among the many activities
offered at the Snohomish
Aquatic Center is swimming
lessons for children as young
as 36 months old, all the way
up to teen and adult swim
lessons.
The center is split into two
main areas: the recreation
side and the natatorium side.
On the recreation side are
all the family-oriented “fun”
pool perks, such as a recreation pool, warm-water
therapy pool, spray-play and
zero-entry area for children,
the Flowrider, which is the
in-house
surf-simulation
machine, a lazy river and the
Splashtacular water slide.
“This is an aquatic wonderland,” said Kristin Foley,
spokeswoman for the Snohomish School District,
which built the facility. “Both
sides (of the pool areas, separated by a large window)
are saline. Our water is a
saline system that produces
natural chlorine. There are
different bodies of water that
are all inter-connected. Our
lazy river is not very lazy. It
moves along pretty quickly
and kids love it!”
On the natatorium side
of the facility is the muchneeded competition swimming pool.
The 10-lane, 25-yard by
25-meter pool boasts a
technologically
advanced
Colorado timing system,
complete with touch pads
and time board. It also holds
a deep diving well and two
diving boards, as well as 10
starting blocks. The natatorium can seat 420 spectators.
“We have this large glass
window here, so that the two
areas — the Rec side and
the competition pool side
— can operate
independently
of each other,”
Foley
said.
“So if there’s
a swim meet
over (on the
natatorium
side), we can
still have the
rec side open.”

Five cold and flu myths

The Native American

welcome, and that’s the spirit
behind Snohomish’s annual
community celebration, Kla
Ha Ya Days.
The old fashioned festival,
featuring the Parade and the
Mark Twain style frog jump

a carnival with entertainment

entertainment, firemen’s
pancake breakfast, salmon
bbq and silly contests such as
bed races, cherry pit spitting,
ice cream eating,pie eating and
so much more old fashioned
fun for all!
The 2016 Kla Ha Ya Festival
celebrates 103 years of old
fashioned summertime fun.
The Parade will be 10:30 am
on Saturday, July 16; the Car
Show will be at the Snohomish
Station on Bickford Ave. on
Sunday, July 17; and Beer
Gardens will be open both
Friday and Saturday (two
different locations).
The Frogtastic Kid’s Fair will
be held at Snohomish Station
Friday, July 15. Also at the

Snohomish – Rich in history
Snohomish has an irresistible charm with its turn of the century architecture and living
history.
Those who love Victorian architecture will enjoy the stately, restored homes in the Historic
residential area. Most of the commercial buildings on First Street have also been preserved so
the downtown looks much the same as it did in the city’s early days.
Relax, take in the scenery and Discover Snohomish. You’ll be glad you did.

Lunch hours are time to
squeeze in a visit to the gym or
take advantage of a sale. Each
day is a marathon of activity.
If this is you, then you know
nothing is worse than getting
knocked down by a cold.
Sitting on the couch, waiting
to feel better while you could
be running errands, working
out or any number of things,
is beyond frustrating.
Speaking with a doctor isn’t
always convenient when you’re
sick, so many reach out to
friends and family, desperate
to find some way to feel better.
More often than not, the home
remedies they’re given are
nothing more than old wives’
tales.
A better plan of action is to
turn to your pharmacist for
help. Often more accessible
than a doctor, all you have to do
is walk up to the counter and
ask them for expert advice. If

health expert, Jim Morelli, is
here to weigh in on some of
the most pervasive cold and
flu myths, and point you to
what really works.
Myth #1: Going outside with
wet hair can make you sick.
Pharmacist’s take: Going
outside with wet hair can make
you physically cold, but it will
not cause a cold.It takes a virus
to make you sick, which is
contracted through exposure
to germs.
Myth #2: Feed a cold, starve
a fever.
Pharmacist’s take: Fevers
do not respond to food. That
being said, it’s always a good
idea to maintain hydration
and nutrition when sick.
Myth #3: Chicken soup can
cure the cold or flu.
Pharmacist’s take: Chicken
soup is not a cure for anything
but hunger. However, there
is some evidence it can be
beneficial when you have
a cold or the flu because it
is hydrating and contains
needed electrolytes.

For your Health, Fitness and Beauty needs
Reasons you’re not sleeping Cold and flu
(BPT) - If you constantly
struggle to fall asleep and stay
asleep, you’re in good (albeit
tired) company.
Millions of Americans are
chronically sleep deprived. In
fact, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention state
that insufficient sleep is a
serious and growing public
health concern. What most
people don’t realize is their
lack of quality rest is often
connected to bad sleep habits.
Are you guilty of any of these
top five mistakes that reduce
your body’s ability to sleep
all night?
Mistake 1: Sleeping on an
old mattress
An old, unsupportive
mattress inhibits quality sleep,
yet the cost and time it takes
to purchase a new mattress
deters people from upgrading.
Fortunately, the mattress
industry is evolving so it’s
easier than ever to get a new
mattress. For example, order
GhostBed at www.ghostbed.
com and it’s delivered in a
compact box. Once open, it
expands into a lush three
layer, 11-inch mattress. With
a 101-night free sleep trial
and 20 year warranty, it’s the
easiest way to try out a new
mattress without visiting
different stores.
Mistake 2: Using electronics
at bedtime
Tablets, cell phones,
smar tphones – digital
devices make it easy to stay
connected, but they mess
with the brain’s ability to fall
asleep. Light omitting devices
disrupt the body’s
natural circadian
rhythms. That
means when
you’re checking
your phone right
before bed, you’re
c au si ng you r
brain to think
it’s time to wake.
The best solution
is to avoid digital devices for
at least an hour before bed.
Instead of TV or tech, take a
bath, read or do some gentle
yoga to get your body into
sleep mode.
Mistake 3: Ignoring phantom
noise pollution
Ticking clocks, beeping
phones and buzzing
electronics may not seem
loud, but this phantom noise
pollution is secretly robbing
you of a good night’s rest.
To encourage your body to
get into REM sleep, try to
eliminate as much noise as
possible from the bedroom.
If you’re left with other
disruptive noises, such as a
snoring partner or outside
traffic, invest in a white noise
machine or earplugs.
Mistake 4: Keeping the
bedroom too warm
The Nat iona l Sleep
Fou n d at i on i d e nt i f i e s
temperature as a key factor
to sleep, recommending a
cooler sleeping environment.
So turn down the thermostat,
reduce blankets and rethink
your mattress. GhostBed
keeps sleepers cool because
it is made with premium
latex that allows for increased
air flow, and gel memory
foam instead of conventional
memory foam.
M i st a ke 5 : A l l ow i ng
inconspicuous light
You flip off the light switch
when it’s time for shuteye, but
your room is probably not
completely dark. Even subtle
glow from a nightlight, phone
or muted TV disrupts those
crucial circadian rhythms,
causing your body to think
dawn is near, which in return
triggers you to get up. Try to
remove or block all light in
your room, and if there’s some
you just can’t eliminate, an eye
mask is a helpful alternative.
so it is not live. It cannot give
you the flu. Even the weakened virus in the nasal spray
vaccination should not cause
the flu. Some people experience what is called a “serum
sickness” from vaccinations,
but this is a short lived period of feeling lousy as opposed to the actual flu.
Myth #5: Avoid dairy when
sick.
Pharmacist’s take: Unless
you are taking a tetracycline
antibiotic, typically used to
treat respiratory tract and
intestine infections, dairy is
fine when you are sick. Keep
in mind,however,that in some
individuals, dairy can upset
the stomach if they’ve got a
stomach bug.
While it mig ht b e
disappointing to hear that
chicken soup doesn’t actually
cure a cold, the upside is
there is an actual way to feel
better. Morelli recommends
continued from page 6
stocking your cabinet with
cold and flu medicine, and the
#1 pharmacist recommended
brand to treat your worst cold
and flu symptoms is Advil
Cold & Sinus.
Next time you’re sick and
eager to feel better, go see
your pharmacist and ask for
Advil Cold & Sinus. Unlike a
number of home remedies,
it will actually help make you
feel better, sooner.

Centennial Trail: popular recreation area
The Centennial Trail is
an enormously popular
re c re at i on a l t r a i l for
walking, bicycling, hiking,
and horseback riding and
is accessible to persons of
all levels of physical ability.
A separate six foot wide
equestrian trail runs parallel
to the ten foot wide paved
trail. The trail is lined with
benches and picnic tables for
your convenience. Portable
style restrooms are located at
the trailheads.
The trail, now over 30-miles
long, provides a safe
alternative transportation
route and extends from
Snohomish to Skagit County.
Eventually the trail route will
be from the Bothell area to
Skagit County.The linear park
also serves as a conservation
corridor protecting sensitive
and important natural and
cultural resources.
The closest trailhead to
Snohomish is located at 5801
S. Machias Rd., just north of
town. There is also parking
available along the north end
of Maple Avenue for outdoor
recreational enthusiasts.
Trail users are also invited to
visit the trailhead and rest stop
in the community of Machias.
This facility is a replica of a
railroad depot built in the late
1890s. The depot once served
a rail line which today is the
Centennial Trail. The Machias
Trailhead facility is available
for rent. Call (425)388-6600
or e-mail scparksrec@gmail.
com for reservations.
Park History:
The Centennial Trail is
constructed on the original
railway right-of-way built in
1889. The railway eventually
connected Seattle north with
Canada and linked Everett east
with Stevens Pass. Operation
ceased on the HartfordEdgecomb section in 1972 and
on the Snohomish- Hartford
section in 1987.To the south in
King County, a section of this
same abandoned railway line
has become Seattle’s heavilyused Burke-Gilman Trail, and
King County’s Sammamish
River Trail.
The railroad provided local
and international mail,freight,
and passenger service. It
carried timber from the
forests, lumber from the saw
mills, and iron, copper, lead,
silver, and gold from Mount
Pilchuck and Monte Cristo
mines. Tourists could ride in
open rail cars to Monte Cristo
and back for the day, winding
through the steep canyons of
the South Fork Stillaguamish
River, or go to the Big Four
Inn at the ice caves on the
“Mountain Loop” to the east.
Development of the trail
began in 1989 during the
state’s centennial, hence the
name, Centennial Trail.
The trail is open for use
during regular park hours,
from 7 am to dusk. The
trailheads are locked during
off-hours.
Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater thrives on community
By MELANIE
RUSSELL
Those who run the Tim
Noah Thumbnail Theater at
Fourth Street and Avenue D
see “the Thumb” as a community beacon that sheds
light on local talent.
Tim Noah has several
Emmy awards, National
Academy of Arts & Sciences
awards, and spots on HBO
and The Disney Channel.
He brought his experience
to the local scene to give others the opportunity to shine
in the spotlight.
Together with partner
Cyndi “Soup” Elliott, Noah
founded the Tim Noah
Thumbnail Theater in 2002.
The theater was the Church
of Christian Science for 100
years.
Noah said their first musical theater class all those
years ago had 14 children.
Following the initial success of working with local
folk and teaching classes in
the church-turned-theater,
Noah and Elliott focused
their sights on performances, open mic nights and music-related events.
Although they insist on being mindful of “little ears”
that come into the Thumb
for shows or lessons, they
also want to stress the fact
that the Thumb is also a
place for adults and families.
“This theater is for everyone. All ages – we get from
95 to 9 months. It’s here for
everybody,” said Elliott.
Elliott runs programs such
as The Imagine Inn, and
the two regularly put on the
Kaddywompas Radio Show
to local delight.
Noah said he believes the
main way the Thumb serves
the community is how it
provides a rare thing: An
inter-generational gathering place for young and
old to have an enjoyable
experience together; coming together for arts-related
events. It breaks down the
barriers between ages by
giving them a common
ground – finding joy in music.
“How wonderful it is that
we can all gather in a place
like this, and have a shared
experience,” Noah said.
“That’s high on
my list. I love to
see people walk
through the door,
and I love to see
them walk out
with a big smile
on their face. I
like extending
that hospitality.”

Evergreen State Fair
Aug. 25-Sept. 5
For over 100 years,
Western Washington has enjoyed the
hometown, authentic
feel of a real country
fair in the heart of
Snohomish County.
If you’re looking for
some real country
fun, the Evergreen
State Fair in Monroe
is the place to be. The
fair runs for 12 days,
ending on Labor Day
each year. This year
the fair will run
from August 25-September 5.

But fun at the Evergreen State Fair isn’t
confined to these 12
days. No, the grounds are used all year round. There are animal shows, both domestic and
farm; swap meets; collectible and special interest shows such as quilt shows, woodcarving
shows, antique shows and craft markets; as well as auto racing and mystery dinners.
For more information on current events call 360-805-6700 or visit the fair online at www.

Riverfront park and boat launch coming soon
The city of Snohomish has
wanted to obtain 20 acres
along the Snohomish River,
owned by Ed and Edith
Stocker, for years to create
a riverside park and boat
launch. This has become
a reality with state and
county grants bankrolling
most of the $500,000 deal.
A significant chunk came
from the Snohomish County
Conservation Futures Fund,
which gets its money
through a sliver of property
tax revenues.
Constructing the boat
launch is on the front burner.
The city is anticipating the
boat launch to open October
2016.State Department of Fish
and Wildlife grants will pay for
the construction. Fishermen
and recreational boaters from
all over the county are anxious
for the boat launch to open.
The master plan for the city
to make the property into a
park will not be available until
after public input is taken.
County buys 12 miles of Rail Corridor
By MELANIE
RUSSELL
Snohomish County is taking
ownership of 12 miles of the
Eastside Rail Corridor, which
has been envisioned for a
tourist train to Snohomish
for years.
The negotiated price was
$3.5 million for the section
which runs from Woodinville
to Snohomish. The county is paying for
it from its Conservation
Futures Fund, which derives
its funding from a sliver of
annual property tax revenue.

The County Council and
Port of Seattle commissioners
have approved the deal and the
purchase-and-sale agreement
could be finalized in midApril, county documents state.
The port bought the entire
42-mile Snohomish-toRenton line from Burlington
Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) in
2009 for $80 million.
County leaders say the
agreement between the
county and Port of Seattle will
protect rail and trail space. County Executive Dave
Somers cheered the acquisition last week. “We will keep this corridor
under public ownership and
are committed to preserving
this rail with trail asset,”
Somers said in a press release.
“This is the first step of
many to protect a valuable
community property.”
Snohomish Mayor Karen
Guzak, a longtime proponent
for putting a tourist train on
the corridor, was enthusiastic
about the acquisition. “We are pleased to hear this.
This purchase has been ‘in
the works’ for quite awhile,
and we are glad to have the
County as a major partner
in developing the corridor
for public purpose,” Guzak
said via email. “The City of
Snohomish supports the
County in their commitment
to developing both trail
and rail. For our city, this
corridor gives us connections
south to Woodinville and King
County and validates the
potential for future growth.”
Many ideas for the corridor
have been pitched through
the years, most prominently a
tourist excursion train as well
as expanding the Centennial
Trail. Country Yarns Bruning Pottery

Check out the Snohomish VIC
Snohomish guests get a
dose of local history when
they step through the VIC’s
doors. The center’s design
is modeled after the old
Snohomish Railway Station
that was located just east of the
Carnegie Building’s parking
lot. With touches such as a
20-foot length of railway track
outside and antique furniture
inside, the center replicates
what the city used to look like
when trains steamed through
town on several different lines.
The Center boasts a Northern
Pacific Railroad inspired logo.
Snohomish antique dealers
donated or sold all of the VIC’s
furnishings which are pieces
from the“schoolhouse period,”
and the Chamber of Commerce
stocked the building with
office equipment.
City Manager Larry Bauman
said Snohomish boasts
one of the best VICs in the
state because of its historic
design and its outdoor deck
overlooking the Snohomish
Street and Avenue D, is open information call 360-862River.
