A wedding photographer who puts his customers first who doesn't want extra money for reprints and offers great value for money, who doesn't let you wait months for your photos, or tempts you with proofs and forces you decide to pick the best ones I want you to be able to remember every moment, every emotion, the nerves and the love you felt for each other when you look at your wedding photographs, the first time you see each other at the altar, your first few kisses, your first touch and hug as husband and wife. I don't want your first memories of being married to be being told to stand there and say cheese. You may know someone who has a camera and who can take your photos for free or as a gift, but it is so worth it to hire a professional like myself for your big day. There is so much more to wedding photography than simply taking photos. You need to be good at time management, have great people skills, be able to work under pressure and have back up equipment. I am based in Glasgow but I can travel anywhere for a wedding. For larger distances I may charge for travelling expenses. 4 John McDermott Photography "Friendly and laid back, not one of those pushy photographers..." Sonya Hill "Very professional and friendly to work with..." Debbie Livingston "We all have lots of favourites; you really helped to make our day so special..." Lynsey Smith "I was totally relaxed from start to finish, I had so many great memories and you captured them all for me..." Susan Gillespie "You have a gift for taking good photos and making people feel comfortable. I will certainly recommend you to my friends..." The standard album has 40 pages but if you wanted to include more photos in your album, you can order 2 pages at a cost of £10 Select your favourite photos from the DVD and burn them on a CD or memory stick. The more information you give me at this stage regarding the layout of the album the better. We could arrange a time to meet and discuss the photos after the wedding if you wanted It is possible at this stage for me to Photoshop some images, for example make them black and white, sepia, colour highlights etc before they are uploaded to be put in the album I will then create your album and upload the proofs to my website with a user name and password. Once you are happy with the lay out I send it to the lab and it should be ready around two to three weeks later. Creating your album should be fun; it will be worth all the effort when you see it for the first time, and thirty years later. 15 John McDermott Photography ALBUM PROOF SAMPLE – Aileen and Chris's wedding 17th May 2013 Their album was a 12x9 landscape, 40 page Bellissimo album. 16 John McDermott Photography 17 John McDermott Photography 18 John McDermott Photography 19 John McDermott Photography 20 John McDermott Photography 21 John McDermott Photography 22 John McDermott Photography WALL DISPLAY PRODUCTS Gallery Prints from only £25 Canvas wrap 12x10 - £35 16x24 - £50 Float frame 20x16 - £75 Glacier Artistry 16x12, overall size 20x16 - £75 Glacier Blocks from £25 Acrylic frames 20x16 - £75 23 John McDermott Photography DESKTOP PRODUCTS Framed desk print 7x5 8x6 10x8 £30 £35 £40 Wall and desk calendars A4 Ipad case Mobile phone case Mousemats Suede cushion 12x12 Large Photo mugs £20.00 £35.00 £20.00 £12.50 £35.00 £15.00 For something different why not have your favourite 100 images on an A1 poster in a collage style with a black frame. Yes. Do I have to select the best wedding photographs? No, you keep every one. How many wedding photographs should I expect? At least 500 and up to 1,500, depending on how long you book me for. What size are the JPEGS? The dimensions are 3008 x 2000 at 300 dpi and they are over 3MB in size. Do I have to wait months to get my photos? No, of course you don't. You can see the best edited photos online within 24 hours of your wedding. How long does it take to have my photos ready? You will have everything within 1 week. Other albums usually take at the most 14 days to be completed. Do you put photos online for my guests to view? Yes, this gallery can be password protected if you want. I only put a selection of the photos online due to the sheer volume of photos so don’t worry if you don’t see a photo in your gallery, you will have it on your DVD. The gallery is online for at least a year. Can I order a digital storybook album? Yes, starting from only £195. This is paid for at the time of ordering and whatever the price is then, that is the price you pay, especially if you order the album 6 months after your wedding. Explain your approach to wedding photography? I will take great photos of your wedding, and you won’t even notice I am there. I will try not imposing myself or taking longer than necessary. 32 John McDermott Photography Why do you like shooting weddings? A famous photographer once said; "I have to be a portrait photographer, landscape photographer, fashion photographer and photojournalist all within a few hours of a wedding day". To me, photographing a wedding is not just another day at the office. I like to document each event and tell the real story of your wedding day. What is your photographic style? I practice photojournalism (also called documentary or reportage photography), which is "capturing" the image, not "creating" it. My objective is to tell the story of the wedding using the camera. I like to set up as few shots as possible, remaining unobtrusive. However, I will usually get in the midst of the fun at some points too. I like to photograph people, emotions, and the details of your wedding day. All you need to do for most of the day is to act naturally and enjoy being the centre of attention. Would you call yourself a traditional photographer or a photojournalist? Neither, I am a combination photographer, but secretly 51/49 in favour of being a photojournalist. We want something contemporary but our parents want some traditional posed photos too. Can you do both? Yes I can - I enjoy shooting documentary style and taking formal portraits. What is included in the wedding day? Very simply I would normally cover the following - preparations at the bride's house, the groom and family at the ceremony beforehand, the guests arriving, the bride arriving, discrete shots of the ceremony (if permitted by the minister or registrar), the signing of the register, the couple leaving, group shots of the immediate families and a private moment with just the couple, shots at the reception including guests mingling, the cutting of the cake, the speeches, toasts and first dance. All shot with a little creative flair and an eye for the spontaneous moment. What can I do with all the photos? You can give your guests a copy of the photo with them in it when you send the thank you card for their gift. Can I print the photos in black and white, sepia, with borders, in the shape of a love heart etc? Yes, if you have a computer with even the basic photo suite software, your imagination is your limit. 33 John McDermott Photography What is the latest I can book you? The day before your wedding, if I am available that is. Do you use digital photography? Yes, both my cameras are digital SLRs, including the top of the range Nikon D3. Can you work from a photo checklist I provide you? Of course. I have many ideas for photos and a great eye for a shot, but sometimes to work with a checklist helps me to help you. Do you have different lenses? Yes, a traditional 18-200mm lens, a 300mm zoom lens, and a 50mm prime lens. What time will you begin and how long will you stay until? I will start an hour before the ceremony and can meet you either at your house as you get ready or at the church. You can book me for either 3 or 4 hours or the full day. How will you be dressed? In my kilt, jacket and bow tie and sturdy shoes, unless it is inclement weather when I will be wearing a suit. Do you process and develop your own prints? No, I use a local photo lab. Do you keep a copy of all the JPEGS? Yes. Are you a member of a professional association? Yes, the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. Can you work within my budget? Yes, I want to be part of your big day and give you plenty of memories to share for the rest of your life, so I can be flexible. Do you require a deposit to secure the date? Yes, a minimum of £150 but the more deposit you pay the less your final balance is. You can pay the deposit without seeing me first if you live outside Glasgow, but please check I am available on your date first. 34 John McDermott Photography How do I know if you’re free on my date? There is a confirmed bookings page on my website so if your date is there I am NOT available. How will I know if you have photographed at my venue before? There is a locations photographed page on my website; if you see your venue click on the link to take you to the gallery. Do you visit the location before the day? Yes, I like to have a trial run, one less thing to worry about on the day. What areas do you cover? I can travel anywhere in Scotland, and beyond. What has been your biggest wedding? One of the first I photographed with over 300 guests. What has been the smallest wedding? I have done a wedding with only 15 guests. I took some of my best photos that day, it was very relaxed. How long have you been a professional photographer for? For almost seven years. I started off dong my friends and relatives weddings and I did such a good job they all encouraged me to do it professionally. Have you any qualifications relating to photography? Yes, I have a Licentiateship from the Society of Wedding Photographers, a Licentiateship from the British Professional Photographers Association, and I am a Craftsman member of the Guild of Wedding Photographers. Are you easy to work with? I am very relaxed and never allow myself to get stressed. You will be smiling all day. You will be spending all day with me so it is important that our personalities do not clash. 35 John McDermott Photography Can you make my day even more special? Of course, when you think about your wedding day, you will always think back how professional and relaxed your photographer was. My auntie may want a photo of her family whom she has not seen in ten years, would this be a problem? Of course not. What better time to take a family photo than when the family are all dressed up, smiling and relaxed? As long as it doesn't distract me from my main duties. Would you expect to be provided with a meal on the day? If I have a seat at a table, it is in my best interests to follow the schedule, and not waste time, because I will be hungry also! Do you do bridal and engagement portraits? Yes, but I suggest booking this at least two months before the big day. Why do you offer one of the best deals online and give away all your photos? There is no catch. I love what I do; I am not greedy and the look on the bride's face when she sees all the photos she has for the rest of your life, that is worth £1,000,000. Have you had any complaints from previous clients? None. So seriously, do I get to keep every photo you take? It is your wedding, your memories, your friends and family, why would I want to keep your photos? Can I reproduce any image myself on my home computer without having to pay you, even though you own the copyright? Yes, as long as they are for personal use. You can take the CD down to Boots or Morrison’s and pay what everyone else would pay. However, I can also provide prints from the website if it was easier. How do I contact you? Email me at john@YouKeepEveryPhoto.com or phone me on 0800 3 118 121 or 07974 680 622. 36 John McDermott Photography Can you come and visit me at my house? Yes, at a time that suits you. However, I can show you more of my work if you come to my house. Can you do post wedding shoots? Yes, I have done three trash the gown sessions and portraits in parks after the wedding day. 37 John McDermott Photography THE LETTER ALLOWING YOU TO PRINT I also give you a signed letter which gives you permission to reproduce all the photos I give you. I also include a line on the presentation box giving you permission to reproduce the images. To whom it may concern, This is to confirm that I have given permission for the person with this letter to reproduce the wedding photos. If there are any problems then please contact me as above. Yours sincerely, John McDermott 38 John McDermott Photography GOING THE EXTRA MILE I spent three hours in Loch Lomond to take great shots during the Trash the Gown shoot in June 2009. I am always looking to take unique photos and be creative, so I took my socks and shoes off and paddled into the sea in order to take this photo of the bride and groom walking along the beach at Troon. I also stopped the traffic on the Squinty Bridge over the River Clyde to take some great shots of the bride and groom (all within health and safety protocols...). I took the bride and groom onto a speedboat whilst photographing them at Lodge on Loch Lomond. 39 John McDermott Photography ORIGINAL AND EDITED PHOTOS I also edit the best photos for you. These include black and white photos, black and white with a touch of colour, sepia, blue tone, and vignetting. The original photos are on the left, the edited ones on the right. 40 John McDermott Photography 41 John McDermott Photography GOLD AWARDS I have won two Gold awards for my photographs and several Silver awards from the Guild of Photographers. This means we get to know each other and have a trial run of shots taken on the day. Pre-shoot (30 minutes or so) with a 8x10 print mounted inside a 20x24 frame of your choice is £150. All your guests can sign the print at your reception. 76 John McDermott Photography PHOTO SESSIONS AFTER YOUR BIG DAY - TrashtheGown.co.uk It is now possible to have a post wedding photo session at locations of your choice, somewhere that is special to you, even if you do not hire me as your photographer. I have been to Aberfoyle, Loch Lomond, New Lanark, City Centre, Glasgow School of Art and Glencoe several weeks after a wedding, because we are not limited to your reception venue or parks. 77 John McDermott Photography The bride gets to wear her dress again and we can relax as there is no time limit or pressure. You don't have to trash the gown!!! You get to keep every photo I take on DVD and it costs only £295 for several hours work, including any travelling expenses. There is no limit to the amount of people who can come along, which is good if a relative could not make the wedding for some reason. I do not force poses I am never rude to guests; I want them to recommend me to their friends! I do casual and traditional, posed and relaxed, fun and unobtrusive, relaxed yet professional I do take similar photos at each wedding, but I always find new ideas at every venue I photograph the bride and groom getting ready The nervous waiting Capturing all your special moments like placing the rings on the fingers and the first kiss Capturing the essence of the day, for example the rings on the cushions, the chair covers and the favours on the tables I also do fine art and macro photography, using tilts, angles and mirrors to photograph reflections You spend so much money on the small details, at least you will have photographs to show your friends what you spent your money on I do reportage and candid photography, posed and un-posed photos of your guests from when they arrive to when they get drunk and start to dance I always do a group photo to include them in your celebrations 85 John McDermott Photography 86 John McDermott Photography TESTIMONIALS Thank you so much for yesterday. You were brilliant and we truly made the right choice of photographer! Can't wait to see them when you've worked your magic! Genius! Xx Kirsten and John 29-3-13 (via Facebook) On behalf of my husband and me, thank you for the stunning photographs and first-class service you provided on our wedding day 29th March. We cannot recommend you highly enough to any couple who are getting married. You were so easy and fun to work with and made everything feel so relaxed. We love your relaxed style and also how you captured so many little moments we didn't even realise were happening. We have the perfect combination of posed pictures and fun shots to ensure no part of our day will be forgotten! We are struggling to choose which photos to put up on the wall as they are all amazing! Our wedding DVD is great and the video messages are hilarious. The edited pictures and the photo booth ones are amazing and we honestly cannot thank you highly enough for your attention to detail and also for the work you put in after our wedding to edit and produce a beautiful album which we will cherish for years to come. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Kirsten and John Stoddart x Just a quick email to thank you for yesterday. You made the photography really fun and your enthusiasm was infectious! Bryony and Scott 30-3-13 87 John McDermott Photography John photographed our wedding on 4th June 2012, the ceremony being held at the University of Glasgow and the reception at Solsgirth House, Dollar. We are absolutely delighted with the photographs that John has taken, and feel that he has captured the romance, fun and laughter of the day, along with managing to make the venues appear even more spectacular and beautiful than they are in real life. Many friends and family members have commented that they are by far the best wedding photographs that they have ever seen as they combine fantastic, not to mention flattering shots of the bride and groom (and the family and bridal party) with far more creative, imaginative and powerful shots. We were especially impressed by the shots taken of the groomsmen at Ashton Lane and the beautiful shots of the bride and groom in the cloisters and in the grounds at Solsgirth House. We are at a loss to choose photo’s to frame as there are so many amazing ones to choose from. From a practical point of view, John was a pleasure to have with us on the wedding day. He was unobtrusive and discreet, yet excellent at managing our guests and ensuring we got all of the shots that we wanted. We will highly recommend John to friends and family members requiring a photographer in the future. Claire & Steve From first meeting to wedding day to delivery of our album I knew we had made the right choice in photographer for our special day. We chose a beautiful wedding venue in Ardanaiseig Hotel which we wanted so much to be shown off in our photographs; John more than did this for us. He provided us with the perfect memento of our wedding. I first met John before the wedding to look at his work and decide on whether we would book him, as soon as I opened his first album I never hesitated. He was great to chat to, took on board all the things that we wanted out of our photos and listened to all our concerns. Nothing was too much hassle; even wading into the loch was no bother for him to get the shot he thought we would love. On the day John was fantastic, I was so nervous and he really out me at ease. Our guests commented on how the photos never got in the way or took us away from our guests for too long which was very important to both of us. When we received our proofs; on arrival home from honeymoon, which was so quick it was a huge surprise, we were over the moon. Obviously the memories they brought back were great but they were so fantastic we were blown away, exactly what we had asked of him. We really couldn't be happier with the whole experience we had working with John, from start to finish it was a real pleasure and we are so grateful for the wonderful job he did for us. Richard & Eilidh Alexander 88 John McDermott Photography If Reinold and I were to ever reconsider our plans, we would still choose John as our photographer. Our wedding plans over the weekend were quirky and unusual but to John, none of this was a problem. John is creative, imaginative and inspired us on our day. He thinks out of the box, and captured many photos of us being ourselves as well as the ones our mother in law expected. The photos are outstanding, and I enjoyed the evening photos where we had many a chuckle. There are so many photos that I love in his collection from our wedding. If you want a photographer who sees opportunities rather than limitations, you go to John. He goes the extra mile to get that one picture that isn't just good, but is perfect. Elinor and Reinold We want to thank you so much for all the gorgeous photos you took on our wedding day. We didn't realise how photogenic we could be. It was good to come back from our honeymoon and have our photos the very next day. You really do provide a fantastic service, you even helped calm my nerves before I left the house for the church. We will recommend you to anyone we know that needs a wedding photographer. Thanks once again for giving us so many happy memories of your wedding day that we can cherish forever. Lynne and Graeme Dunlop Steven and I would like to thank you for the amazing pictures you took for our wedding. We can't believe we got over 1,000. You were very professional and friendly to work with and we will definitely be recommending you. Debbie and Steven Livingston My husband and I were delighted with the photos John took at our wedding. He gave us a massive choice. John fitted into our day effortlessly and actually felt more like an extra guest. Claire and Owen Bell My wife and I were delighted at the way you were able to capture our special day. We were thrilled with the photographs, and everyone who has seen them has commented on how spectacular they are. In our opinion, and our family's opinions you are absolutely outstanding in your work, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for capturing our day so well. Bryan and Karen Granger 89 John McDermott Photography Just a quick note to say thanks for sending on the DVD. I have now been able to access the photos and the only problem is there are so many of them I have to explain to my boss why I have done so little work over the last week – I’ve been too busy looking at photos! We are all really delighted with the way the pictures turned out - there is such a wide variety. However, what I am most pleased about is how relaxed you made me feel – so much so I eventually wasn’t aware of you being around. For someone who doesn’t like having her photo taken you would never know by the pictures. The time and effort you went to, to achieve all the different shots was also much appreciated – particularly in the typical West of Scotland weather that we had for our day. If anyone is ever looking for a reference or testimonial then please feel free to contact me – I would be more than willing to tell them how satisfied we were with your service (and price). Similarly, I would be more than willing to recommend your services to any of my friends or family. You are certainly gaining a reputation as an excellent wedding photographer even up here in the wilds of Lewis. Mr and Mrs Mcleod Hi john, Just had a look at your most recent wedding photos on your site; they are gorgeous! I still can't believe I've been lucky enough to find you and have you do our wedding. I had got quotes from other photographers, and they were so expensive that we actually considered doing without professional photos! Really chuffed and can't wait for the big day! Best wishes, Yvonne x Hi, my wedding is 1 August and you are the best person I have found yet. 90 John McDermott Photography WEDDING GIFT VOUCHERS For a unique wedding gift you can buy wedding gift vouchers from me to give to the bride and groom which they can put towards any of my wedding products. These include storybook albums, canvas wraps or glacier artistry. The vouchers come in values of £5, £10 and £25. 91 John McDermott Photography RAINY DAYS It has been said that when it rains on your wedding day, that the guests are brought closer together, there is more of an atmosphere. While I hope it is the best conditions possible for your photos, even if it rains we can still have some great photos. It was torrential rain at Cameron House on 25 October but I took some great shots of the bride and groom playing snooker, on the grand staircases and of all the guests, which I wouldn't have done if we were outside. 92 John McDermott Photography The VOWS awards are given to those wedding suppliers that provide an exceptional service.
