Summer 2016
WOWnews QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF THE WOMEN’S MINISTRY OF BDBC SUMMER 2016 WOW Events The WOW Leadership Team was blessed by the Lord June 10-11 as we met to plan the events for this upcoming year. The ideas flowed, plans came together, and excitement grew to share with you what we can look forward to this year. Abide with Me became our theme for the year with John 15:5 as our main verse. We desire all the BDBC women and the women in our community to draw closer to the Lord through prayer, Bible study, worship and evangelism. The events we have planned focus on at least one of these aspects of abiding with our Savior. The year begins with the Beth Moore Simulcast, and many of our area churches are excited to join with us on this Day with Beth. In December, we will turn our focus to missions and Keeping Christ in Christmas as we share Him with our community and beyond. January will bring another opportunity for us to leave the BDBC campus and head to Riverstone Resort and Spa in Pigeon Forge for a retreat where we will learn to abide with the Lord by studying His Word. Worship is of vital importance in our abiding with Him as we give Him the glory due His name; therefore, you will not want to miss Abide with Me - Night of Worship in March, as we sing praises and listen to songs making much of Jesus. We will complete the year in April committing ourselves to our Secret Garden of prayer where we pour out our hearts to the Lord and find strength through His Holy Spirit to take each step of life abiding in Him. Take your calendar, set aside these dates, and pray for the women that the Lord brings into your path that you can invite. May we all find ourselves clinging closer to the Vine throughout this year as we intentionally focus on abiding with Jesus through prayer, Bible study, worship and sharing Him with others. Mark your calendars! Two or three years into the commitment, I’m wondering how many of us have sustained our ENTHUSIASM, VIGOR and ENDURANCE. Some of it may have dwindled a little and we are now feeling more like the tortoise. May I share some things regarding ENDURANCE that the Holy Spirit has revealed to me? The first thing He has impressed on my heart is the fact that I need to be still and hear the Father whisper my name. I truly believe each of us crave to sense our sweet Lord bending over us and whispering our name and calming our spirits where we can recognize what Paul has to say in I Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, be steadfast, immoveable….your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” In other words DON’T give up, persevere, ENDURE. Precious WOW ladies, we are also encouraged in I Peter 5:8, 10 to “be of sober spirit, be on the alert….and after you have suffered a little while the God of all grace…will Himself perfect, confirm, strength and establish you.” Paul tells Timothy, “Be ready in season and out of season.” I Timothy 4:2. I am also lifted up when I read what Paul told the church at Galatia, “Let us not lose heart…for in due time we will REAP, if we do not grow weary.” Galatians 6:9. Let’s look at this word ENDURANCE….”Hupomone” = to abide under (military term); long suffering, associated with hope and the quality that does not surrender to circumstances or succumb under trials. As we serve with ENDURANCE, it’s imperative that we remember to exercise the gifts of the Spirit, or we will never make it. I know this from experience, for without Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control we will become frustrated, angry, bitter and develop a negative spirit. I believe this is why Paul gives us very wise counsel in II Corinthians 6:3-4, “Giving no cause for offense in anything, in order that the ministry not be discredited, but in everything may we be acceptable as servants of God, in much ENDURENCE….in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness.” How do we accomplish this journey of ENDURANCE? One, we must develop a strong prayer life and stay in God’s Word; two, we should slow down and not be prideful in order to; three, ask for help! Jethro, who was Moses’ father-in-law, explains to Moses how important it is to seek fellow-workers in Exodus 18:15-27. “This thing you are doing is not good. You will surely wear out. It will be easier for you….you will be able to ENDURE.” Exodus 18:22, 23. Don’t be afraid to call out for help. Remember, the process is SLOW! The process is SILENT! The most important thing to remember about ENDURANCE is, ‘We are not the Messiah of the 21st Century.” We can’t do it alone; therefore, don’t hesitate to ask God for Divine Help, ask the Holy Spirit, ask a friend, ask a leader. The difference between something GOOD and something GREAT is DETAIL. I am personally asking the Lord to: Move us out of the thick ranks of MEDIOCRE to the thin ranks of EXCELLENCE. EXCELLENT ENDURANCE I love you, Lanita WOW Recipes Broccoli Pasta Salad Ingredients: Cook pasta until al dente and rinse in warm water. Dice peppers and chop broccoli. Combine peppers, broccoli, cranberries and pasta. Pour dressing over ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least two hours. More dressing may need to be poured over before serving. 7 sweet mini multi-colored peppers 1 head broccoli 1/3 cup dried cranberries 4 cups cooked bow-tie pasta 3/4 cup to 1 cup of Three Chees Ranch Dressing Salt and Pepper to taste Slivered almonds (optional) This salad will keep for two days in the refrigerator, tightly sealed. More dressing may need to be used after the first day since the pasta will soak up much of the dressing. Enjoy! Hope WOW Prayers As we look to the new year in WOW, we sense the exciting things God has in store for us. All the plans He has given must be bathed in prayer. May we join together in prayer and praise for the blessings coming our way. We owe Him our best and our best must be built on a foundation of prayer. Let us pray boldly, knowing that "He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us.” Ephesians 3:30 Prayerfully, Janice WOW Ideas Butterfly Feeding Station Supplies: 1 brightly colored plate with sloping sides 1 wire plate holder attached across back of plate Several yards of string, twine or wire to tie to four sites around plate 1 O-ring to attach strings drawn above plate 1 metal hook, wire or pipe cleaner to attach to tree limb in shady spot. May substitute metal pie tin or plastic plate with 34 holes punched in edge of plate, but it will not work as well in windy places. Simple feeding solution made of 4 parts water to 1 part sugar boiled for several minutes and cooled. Place a new, clean, yellow, orange or red kitchen sponge onto the plate and saturate with solution. Extra solution may be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. Martha WOW Bible Studies Precept Study - Romans Part 3 The Sovereignty of God and Free Will of Men Begins, Tuesday, August 9, 11 am - 1 pm for 8 weeks; meets in the Education Building, D224/225. Be looking for these studies to start soon: The Gospel of Mark by Lisa Harper Hope and Help for Single Moms by Lori Little WOW Reads Ladies, have you heard the Women of Worth is hosting a Beth Moore simulcast in September. Yeah!!! I’m so excited. I always like to become acquainted and familiar with a speaker prior to hearing her. You can do that by visiting the church library; we have many of Beth Moore’s books: So Long Insecurity, Audacious, Living Free, and Believing God - to just start the list. Beth’s books focus on aiding women who desire to model their lives on evangelical Christian principles. Let’s challenge ourselves toward continually working on maturing as “Sisters, loved by God.” If your hectic schedule won’t allow you to dive into a book right now, I invite you to Movie Night on Friday, August 19. The fun time is free and includes free popcorn and free drinks. But that isn’t the best part: the movie is God’s Not Dead 2. The movie centers on Grace, a Christian public schoolteacher, who is forced before a judge for honestly answering a question about Jesus in the classroom. With the principal and superintendent joining forces with a zealous civil liberties group, Grace faces an epic court case that could cost her career she loves and expel God from the classroom. And if you don’t like watching part 2 before you have seen part 1, our library has the first one on the shelf waiting just for you. Pray for this event as there was over 100 in attendance for the first one and a precious child was saved. God is good. . .all the time God is good. Keep Reading! Tina
