FT Member News Focus Group members When many of you joined the membership you ticked a box stating you might be interested in attending Focus Groups. Focus Groups ensure the Trust hears FT members’ views on a variety of service development topics. However, many of our initial members were not given this option as the forms have evolved over time. If you would like to be given the opportunity to be invited to attend one of our future Focus Groups, then please advise the Foundation Trust office. There is no commitment to attend. Focus Group topics so far have included: Outpatients, Inpatients, Patient Discharge Process, and Car Parking. Future Events We are hoping to run some healthcare events of interest to members. Initial ideas have been Physiotherapy / Exercise and Living with Dementia. Other ideas for future events are: • Children’s Health • Diagnostics • ‘Home from Hospital’ – Help and advice • Women’s Health • Sexual Health If you would be interested in attending any of these events, please advise the FT Office, or you can use the tear off slip below. The Governors’ Council meets five times in the year, but additional activities are necessary to enable the Governors to fulfil their role. One of the principles of the Foundation Trust is more involvement by the public in their local hospital. This is achieved by developing public membership of the Trust. This is like being a shareholder in a public company or becoming a ‘friend’ of an organisation. As Chairman of the Membership Committee, I have been involved in recruiting new members and trying to get the membership to reflect the community we serve. For instance, the lack of members aged between 16 and 20 was corrected when we recruited at the College of West Anglia Freshers’ Fayre in September. Although members have an opportunity to get more involved with the Trust, our main role is to keep members informed about Trust issues (via the newsletters like this one) and to make sure their views can be heard. One way we have been doing this is to attend Patient Participation Group meetings at GP practices. I attend the Woottons PPG. Very often there are misunderstandings about the Trust which we can correct; for instance I was able to tell one person that all the money collected from the car parks goes directly into patient care and is not ‘profit’ for any other body. Another Governor role is to help improve the patient experience. I attend the Patient Experience Committee, and this has an input from many aspects of hospital activity. I take part in two types of internal inspection developed to correct any problems in environment or quality of care at an early stage: The Patient Experience Environment Team and mock Care Quality Commission inspections. David Coe Non-Clinical Staff Governor My name is David Coe and I am a Non-Clinical staff governor. I have been a governor for two years and during that time I have helped in the appointment of two new Non-Executive Directors through the Nomination and Remuneration Committee. I am also on the Governors’ Business Working group. We are responsible for advising and/or making recommendations to the full Governors’ Council about the Trust’s regulatory position and development of the Trust’s long term strategy, annual business plan and annual report. At the last monthly meeting we considered the report of the Trust’s meeting with Monitor. We also looked at: Patient Choice, protection of QEH interests, provision of high quality services (which are valued by patients), winter pressures and the need to improve income and savings by the end of the financial year. I have attended all Governors’ Council meetings so far, to represent staff views in helping to plan the strategic direction of the Trust (not the operational position, which can sometimes be a difficult concept for staff to take in). During this period, I have chaired four staff members’ meetings. I would like to ask all staff to try and attend further staff meetings as this helps us to raise any concerns you have regarding the strategic direction that the Trust is taking. The next scheduled meeting is on 9 April at 15.00 in the Conference Room. Please come along and help shape the future of The QEH!
