Cocoon Twisted Float Shrug ©2005-2008 Annie Modesitt Phto by Kaylee (ChimeraKnits) Sizing This pattern is not sized in a traditional, standard way, but you determine the sizing based on two simple measurements; the cross-front measurement (from armhole seam to armhole seam in when wearing a fitted T-shirt, just above the breasts) and the fingertip to fingertip measurement. Because of the individualized nature of this pattern, and because any weight of yarn can be used when making this garment, determining yarn yardages can be difficult. Use the amounts below as a guideline, but if this is the first time you are making the garment purchase extra yarn to be safe. Gauge / Needles There is NO gauge required for this sweater. No matter what needle size or yarn weight you use, this pattern will WORK. I advise you to use a needle that works well with the yarn, do not use a ©2005 - 2008 Annie Modesitt Twisted Float Cocoon Shrug V4 Pg 1 of 4 annie@anniemodesitt.com needle that is too large! Use dpn’s in a size that works well with your yarn to start, then move up to 24” circulars as your shrug grows. You may want to use 2- 24” circs to allow you to see the full circumfrence of the sweater as you work on it. With A cast on 6 sts. Next row: (K1, M1) rep to end of row, turn. Next row: Knit all sts Repeat last 2 rows until there are 24 sts on needle. Divide sts evenly between 4 dpns, (6 sts on each), or 2 circs (12 sts on each) Yarn Requirements 32 (40, 48)” bust estimates Amounts are based on worsted weight yarn. You may use any weight yarn to make this garment, but the yardages will change (more yardage is required for a thin yarn, less for bulky yarn.) Yarn A: 1040 (1300, 1560) yds Yarn B: 400 (500, 600) yds Yarn C: 280 (350, 420) yds Begin working in the round Next round: With A knit all sts, inc 8 sts evenly around work - 32 sts total. Note: Place increases in a different point in each section in each round thus staggering them & preventing a line. Construction The piece is worked from the center out, divided into 8 equal sections with markers. At the point where the diameter of the work is equal to the cross-front measurement divided by .83, armholes are placed by working all stitches in the first and fourth sections in waste yarn. The stitch pattern is resumed until the total diameter of the piece is equal to the fingertip to fingertip measurement divided by 1.7. This garment can be worn as a longer jacket with a narrow collar, or as a short shrug with a wider collar. Notions Stitch Markers (8), darning needle, waste yarn. Note: You may notice that in this pattern whenever you are knitting with A only, you will also be increasing 1 stitch in each of the 8 sections in that round. This will help you remember when to increase. Stagger increases so they don’t sit above one another. Sweater Body ©2005 - 2008 Annie Modesitt Twisted Round Section (4 rounds) Next round: (With A K1, with B k1) rep to end of round, bringing new yarn over dropped yarn when working each st. DO NOT UNTWIST YARN! Next round: Slide Yarn B twists down strand of A, and with only A knit all sts, inc 2 sts on each dpn - 40 sts total. Place marker every 5 sts - 8 sections. Next round: (With A K1, with B k1) rep to end of round, this time bringing new yarn under dropped yarn when working each st, untwisting strands. Next round: With A, knit all sts, inc 1 st in each section - 48 sts. Garter Round Section (4 rounds) Next round: with A, purl all sts Next round: With A, knit all sts, inc 1 st in each section. Rep last 2 rounds once - 64 sts. Alternate Twisted Round Section & Garter Round Section (8 rounds total), increasing 1 st in each section every other (Yarn A-only knit) round. Note, when you are a few inches from the center opening, you may want to close it up to tidy your work. Using the tail from the cast on, sew together the edges of the first few rows, then Twisted Float Cocoon Shrug V4 Pg 2 of 4 annie@anniemodesitt.com thread the tail through each of the original 6 cast on stitches and pull tight to close the opening. Weave in end. the “hole” between rows. Continue working in pat as est, alternating twisted rows with garter rows until piece is desired diameter. See the chart below for an estimate of large your circle should be. Change to Yarn C and work 8 - 12 rounds of garter st. Bind off all sts loosely. A) Across body front, from armhole to armhole just above the bust. Divide the cross front meas by .83 to determine armhole placement. Work in the garter / twisted float repeating pattern as for the body, with no increasing, Switching to circulars when there are too until sleeves are desired length. Change to many sts to fit comfortably on dpns, continue Yarn C and work 8-12 rounds of garter st as working in the round as established to for body. Bind off all sts loosely. Sleeves With 2 circs or 1 long circ, and working in the rows of A immediately above and below the waste yarn, pick up any sts which have waste yarn running through them.
