April - Brookland Baptist Church
Shining for the Church and Community VOLUME 42 ISSUE 4 APRIL 2014 The Brookland star IN THIS ISSUE PASTOR’S PEN H THE REAL MEANING OF EASTER oly Week is the week between Palm Sunday (April 13) and Holy Saturday (April 19). It is the time in the Christian calendar where we recognize the extraordinary events that led to the betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. EMPOWERMENT CENTER DONATION Holy Week at Brookland is observed with worship serves Sunday through Thursday nights. The preacher and worship leader for each evening is a son- or daughter-of-the house. CHILDREN’S CHOIR MEMBERS MOVING UP Holy Week Services for 2014 begin in the West Campus Main Sanctuary on Sunday night with Baptism starting at 6 p.m. Rev. Steve Cannon will preach. SPOTLIGHT ON YOUTH CELEBRATIONS AND BIRTHDAYS Services Monday through Thursday night will take place in our Northeast Campus Sanctuary, 1203 Summit Parkway, and will begin at 7 p.m. On Monday, Reverend Jeryl Salmond will serve as worship leader, the Brookland Northeast Choir will sing and Rev. Johnny Barnett will preach. On Tuesday, Reverend Betty H. Brown will serve as worship leader, the Sonrise Chorale will sing, and Rev. JoAnn Board will preach. On Wednesday, Reverend Steve Cannon will serve as worship leader, the Male Chorus and the First Sunday Ensemble will sing, and Rev. Norris Scarborough will preach. On Thursday, we will observe the Lord’s Supper. Reverend Charles Cherry will serve as worship leader, the Sanctuary Choir will sing, and Rev. Ronald Best will preach. I F YOU TRY GREATER THINGS FOR GOD, you can trust God for greater things. God has an enormous supply of blessings in store for his people, but often times REV. CHARLES B. JACKSON, JR. we delay, or even deny the disbursements of those Executive Pastor blessings by having a mediocre mindset and a limited level of expectation in ourselves. We must understand that we have been blessed with ability beyond compare... we can do so much more than what we often give ourselves credit for. There is a power that lives within all of God's children that is unmatched and immeasurable by any earthly means. The Bible reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made... just a little lower than the angels! God has given us dominion and power over every created thing that dwells upon the earth. Therefore, the only thing that can prevent us from doing what we desire to do is our own perception of our ability and God's ability! We must be reminded that nothing is too hard for God and if we just believe - ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! Remember: Greater is He that is in you, than He that is in the world! Anything in this world can be conquered and consumed by the Power that God has placed within all His Children... and when we believe in Christ that power becomes activated and able to do the amazing work of God's Absolute Will! So I pray that as we embrace and embody the theme, "Greater is Coming" that we will commence and conclude each day saying, "Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all I can ask or think, according to the Power that is at work in me... To God be the Glory!" If you try Greater things for God, you can trust God for Greater things! Be Blessed to Be a Blessing, Rev. Charles B. Jackson, Jr. Editor's Note O h how blessed we are that the Brookland Baptist Church family has embraced our efforts to provide an excellent representation of our fellowship in a print format. To Pastor Jackson and the Executive Team, we thank you for your support as we strive to create a GREATER way to communicate with members, long-term visitors, and those just beginning their faith walk about the ministries of our church. As you continue to read each edition of The Brookland Star, I ask that you allow us to communicate the mission, events, and programs of our campuses not only to the established memberships but also to those seeking salvation or visitors looking for a new church home. Each Sunday our membership grows and we need to immediately capture these new members so they can become involved and encouraged to participate in our diverse ministries. So the information in the articles may explain something that is common knowledge to the membership at Brookland but it is unknown to new members and visitors. I consider it part of our mission to provide detailed information about the ministries, events, and programs taking place in our congregation to make it easier for new members and visitors to quickly learn that Brookland is more than a 2 hour service on Sunday morning in a beautiful edifice in West Columbia or Northeast Columbia. This congregation is active every day, all day, and there is more work to do. If you are a ministry leader or the designee to submit articles to The Star and you are having trouble figuring out what to write, contact us and we’ll help you develop an accurate representation of your event or ministry. Our newsletters are now on the church web site. You can find them under Ministries, Main Campus (West), Member Services, and finally Newsletters. Valeria Farr with the West Campus Christian Education Department shares the biblical references of Easter. Easter is important because we believe that Jesus paid the penalty for our sin and purchased eternal life for all who believe in Him through His death, burial and resurrection. The Christian faith is nothing without this glorious event so on Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is usually the most well-attended Sunday service of the year at most churches. However, it is more than just a Sunday Service. During this time, we should think about the “new life” that we have in Jesus and reflect on the price that was paid for each of us. In Sunday School this is a constant emphasis and during this Easter season, we wanted to share these thoughts and some Bible references concerning Easter for your personal and/or family study time. And, as always, we invite you to join us for Sunday School! The for-telling of the Resurrection Isaiah 53: 9-11 (New Living Translation) 9 He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave. 10 But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s good plan will prosper in his hands. 11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. Jesus foretold His own Resurrection Matthew 20:18-19 (New Living Translation) 18 “Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die. 19 Then they will hand him over to the Romans to be mocked, flogged with a whip, and crucified. But on the third day he will be raised from the dead.” The Resurrection Matthew 28:1-10 (New Living Translation) Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb. 2 Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. 3 His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. 4 The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. 5 Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. 7 And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” 8 The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel’s message. 9 And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to him, grasped his feet, and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.” We are well on our way to reaching our goal of 1,000 women registered for Women’s Day 2014. The story of Esther reminds us that God has a plan for our lives. God used Esther's intelligence, beauty and position as queen to accomplish His will. Lenell Geter explains the role and duties of the Deacon Ministry. Dea. Acy Suber, Jr., Chairman of the Brookland Baptist Church Deacon’s Ministry, presided during the March quarterly meeting of the ministry where over 60 deacons were in attendance. Pastor Jackson offered words of inspiration and insight on the great works that are happening at Brookland. The focal point that Dea. Suber spoke was on providing quality service when carrying out the deacon’s duties. He emphasized ways to fine tune the communion process so that it goes smoothly. The deacons offer communion to baptized persons on the first Sunday of each month. Deacons also provide communion, when requested, to sick or shut-in members. “The office of deacon was created for the purpose of handling the benevolence ministry,” said Suber speaking to 11 men, including myself, at a 2013 “deacon-in-training” meeting. He asked each of us to shadow an experienced deacon as he serves communion to sick or shut-in church members. I shadowed Dea. Chester Myers on two visits as he served communion to an elderly member who lived at an assisted living facility with her husband. Dea. Myers and I arrived at the member’s suite where she and her husband greeted us with warmth and hospitality. After he introduced me to the couple, a pleasant conversation ensued among them; as if, a trusted professional was visiting long standing friends. Before offering her communion, I observed Dea. Myers praying and reading a scripture associated with the occasion. whole congregation through the benevolence ministry. Many needs that the deacon ministry handle are spiritual and do require some training. I spoke with Dea. Thomas Johnson, the instructor for the 16 weeks Bible PreRequisite course, about many of the duties that the newly ordained deacon may be asked to perform. There were several popular services, duties and responsibilities that he mentioned: Deacons check on members by telephone or may visit members. Deacons would like to meet new members and may arrange for a face to face meeting. Deacons perform monthly devotional services, at the church, on the first and second Sundays. Deacons are willing to minister to those who are sick, needy and elderly. Deacons are willing to provide a recording, upon request, of the Sunday’s sermon for those who are ill or homebound. Deacons are willing to inform the church of elderly or sick members in need of transportation to worship services. Deacons would like members to update them each time there is a change; such as, a change of address or telephone number. Deacons are willing to refer mission requests to the mission board. Deacons are willing to stand with members during baby dedication. Deacons are willing to telephone members during bereavement and may visit the member’s home or speak words of comfort on behalf of the deceased; especially, for members that the deacon served for a long while. Deacons are willing to pray for members during difficult times. Deacons are willing to refer persons in need of help to qualified public or private resources. Deacons may witness to believers or unbelievers on the goodness of God. “The purpose of service is so God can reach others through our hands,” said Suber. Deacons handle the benevolence ministry of the congregation and those beyond the walls of the church building. That was not so for the Apostles at the Jerusalem Church. They handled the benevolence ministry until complains about their service became a problem. The Hellenists, Greek-speaking Jews, were complaining to the Apostles that they were not getting Deacons assist the pastor as he serves the spiritual their proper share of the food and other provisions as was the Hebrews widows. needs of the congregation and lead unsaved persons to the Lord. The duties and responsibilities of a deacon are much The Apostles provided a solution and asked the more involved than what people believe when receiving brethren to “seek out from among you seven men of good communion on the first Sunday of the month from wellreputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we organized deacons. The role of a deacon is practical and may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves spiritual because their care touches the lives of persons who continually to prayer and the ministry of the word.” The may be sick, injured, bereaved or emotionally distressed Apostles felt that “It is not desirable that we should leave and may be hanging on to life by a thread. the word of God and serve tables” [Acts 6 (NKJV)]. Recycling I AM TYLER MCALLISTER, A MEMBER OF BOY SCOUT TROOP 74. MY EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT IS INTRODUCING RECYCLING TO OUR BROOKLAND CHURCH FAMILY. Recycling is a viable and resourceful means of creating a sustainable community. Incorporating recycling throughout a growing Church and it’s campus is essential for sustaining our community as a whole. Teaming with SC DHEC and local businesses I have been able to help impact a greener Brookland. workshop on recycling for the Girl Scout, Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troops of Brookland prior to a holiday dinner. A question and answer session about the project and recycling was conducted to include providing literature regarding top 10 facts about recycling. Helping increase recycling at Brookland helps preserve natural resources and improve the quality of life in our community. The Church currently recycles paper, cardboard and cooking oil; however, this project will expand recycling to include plastic and aluminum items. With the help of fellow Scouts, we assembled recycling bins and placed them in the areas of the church for the collection of plastic and cans (Health and Wellness Center and Fellowship Hall). Frequently Asked Questions About Recycling: Question: What can I recycle? Answer: Nearly everything is recyclable! (ex. Mixed Paper, Cardboard, Dry Cell Batteries, Aluminum, Plastic and Glass) Another aspect of the project was to educate the youth on the importance of recycling. A workshop was provided to Children’s Worship, where I to successfully taught the children using coloring worksheets, word maze and verbal presentation the importance of recycling at home, in their schools, and now even at church. I also conducted a Question: Which metals, plastics and cans are recyclable? Answer: Aluminum cans and steel food cans are recyclable. Number 1-7 plastic jugs and bottles, and clean aluminum foil are also eligible. Make sure you empty and rinse containers before placing them in the bins! Plastic bags, cups or tubs are NOT recyclable. RECYCLING BINS Beginning March 26, 2014 these bins will be located in the Fellowship Hall and Heath and Wellness Center. The bins are marked for paper, aluminum cans and plastic. The locations were chosen based on the high traffic volume and the use of these items in those areas. The bins will be checked weekly and the items recycled. Please use the bins as we move forward with our recycling efforts at Brookland Baptist Church. We are experiencing some of the highest unemployment numbers since the Great Depression. Millions are unemployed or underemployed and many are struggling - even with a job! Still, love is wanted, needed and all around, so should you not date because his ends don't meet or her money is funny? I say no! Relationships should be based on much more than the amount of cash on hand. How much you do or don't have, rarely reflects a person’s character. Of course you want to know if the person is ambitious, on their grind, if they have a plan for their life and future, if this is merely a set back or a set up for laziness! But, that’s what dating is for! It’s the time you take to find out WHO you’re dealing with. Take it slow, get to know the person and wait for the euphoria of the newness to die down before deciding if this is the one for you! Ask the right questions, and make an informed decision; but don’t kick him or her to the curb simply because they're not rolling deep - or don’t look like they are. Remember looks can be deceiving! The tide may and likely will turn and YOU could be the one with empty pockets or in the unemployment line! So stop pre-judging folks (you wouldn’t want to be). Get to know the person based on who they are and NOT what they have or don’t have! Jesus sends Samuel to Bethlehem (1 Samuel 16) to find the new king from one of Jesse’s 6 sons. Samuel saw Eliab who was tall and handsome and thought, “Surely this is the man who the Lord has chosen.” Jesus cautioned him saying: don’t judge by things like that. Eliab is not the right man. After 5 more sons, the youngest not as handsome but bright and musical son, is chosen! God doesn’t look at what people see. People judge by what is on the outside, but He looks at the heart. Don’t count anyone out until you find out what (if any) place this person has in your life; why the Lord has placed them there! This lean season actually may be a good opportunity to take the time to build a sincere friendship, without all the bling blinding your eyes, distorting the true view! Friendship and mutual respect should be the foundation of any, especially romantic relationship! Be creative; find fun and different ways to spend time together! PB&J in the park, the dollar movie, museums and street festivals. Find a bargain on one of the discount sites. Go to the library or someplace you can sit or walk and talk and get to know each other. Remember, you want someone in your life who has more than just money! You can’t find anyone with enough cash to buy respect, loyalty, understanding, humor and spirituality.
