he 14th Annual Mid-Atlantic
Chapter Design Awards were
announced at The Premiere held on
Wednesday, April 22nd. For the 6th
consecutive year, the event was held at
the Roof Terrace Restaurant of the John
F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts. Master of Ceremonies for the
event was Jean Cochran of NPR’s
Morning Edition and our special guest
was Cheryl Durst, Executive VP and
CEO of IIDA.
The Washington Metro City Center
hosts this event to recognize design
excellence in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The Institute of Business Designers
(IBD) hosted a similar event called
The Twilight Affair the five years prior
to its 1994 merger into IIDA. The

What a difference a year can make!
Last year, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC)
was setting short, mid, and long-term
goals with the focus on growth, growth,
and more growth. With our industry and
profession facing some of the greatest
challenges in its short history the idea of
growth has come into question. Instead
we’re now asking: How does the MidAtlantic Chapter add value?
The Mid-Atlantic Chapter is in a good
place. Under the capable leadership of the
2008/2009 MAC Board and President, Jim
Williamson we have added value to our
membership. We are on firm financial
ground. Membership numbers are steady
and we’ve even seen an increase in student
membership. As you can see in The
Premiere article in this issue, our signature
events are going strong. Coming from a
place of strength allows us to build on our
past success and take a hard look at how
we can be more strategic in our thinking.
In an effort to better focus our resources,
the MAC Board took a look at our city
centers. As a result of this discussion, the
Annapolis City Center will merge with the
Baltimore City Center at the end of 2009.
Ann Pierson, current Annapolis City
Center Director, will serve out her term on
the Baltimore council. Members who are
now affiliated with Annapolis will choose
either the Washington Metro City Center
or Baltimore City Center when they renew
their membership this fall. The 2009
Annapolis calendar will remain the same
and Annapolis will still hold the wildly
successful cruise in August.

This year we’ve leveraged technology
to improve our member interface. Our
weekly e-blasts and the ability to pay
on-line by credit card has improved our
efficiency and provided convenience to
our members. During my term 2009/2010
I will encourage the MAC Board to build
on these successes and take a hard look at
ways to improve.
On June 25th, the Chapter Board
transitioned and the new Board took over.
This transition occurred as many notions
such as growth are being challenged. For
example, as Interior Design professionals
we’re all familiar with the oxymoron “less
is more.” The idea of offering value and not
“more stuff” is captured in a quote from
Bill McKibben’s book Deep Economy.
“Bill McKibben offers the biggest
challenge in a generation to the prevailing
view of our economy. For the first time in
human history, he observes, “more” is no
longer synonymous with “better”—indeed,
for many of us, they have become almost
opposites.”
IIDA’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter leadership
put this advice into practice at our retreat
on July 25th in Baltimore. We examined
our activities identifying those that add
value to our members and those that may
tax our resources without a commensurate
return. We also looked at our most valuable
resource, our volunteers, and how they are
facilitated or hindered by our processes.
Our over-arching goal is to continue to
provide value to our membership and
align our efforts with the needs of our
membership without compromise.

A
t the start of the new year, the WMCC
established a special planning team
to support design professionals who were
looking for substantial working knowledge
about earning and documenting LEED
credits for both New Construction and
Commercial Interiors projects. Speared by
a strong group of volunteers who joined the
planning team, the committee has already
produced five programs in 2009.
Each program has explored topics that have
introduced new strategies and resources to
the participants. The meetings are hosted
by design firms and showrooms who
generously offered to be part of this new
series of programs.
So far this year: OTJ hosted a materials
program based on the popular Story of
Stuff

that will focus on effective detection
of greenwashing and the application of
sustainable product standards and their
contribution to material knowledge and the
environment for September and October.

Baltimore City Center: Membership Bingo

T
he BCC held its annual membership
Bingo event on April 30. BCC
membership chairs Kären Welsko and
Amy Tate planned the event around
a “Back to Basics Baltimore” theme,
including locally brewed beverages,
Berger cookies, and pizza from a local,
independent pizzeria. The event was well
attended, with approximately 50 potential
new members, current members, and
sponsors in attendance. Our generous
BCC sponsors donated wonderful prizes,
including tote bags, gift cards and furniture.
The top prize for the evening was a one
year membership to IIDA, which was won
by Vickie Kalinowski of Arbee Associates.

Baltimore City Center:
Government Forum Integral Systems

highlight of the spring was the BCC
Government Forum, a tour of the
new corporate headquarters of Integral
Systems, Inc. which took place on May
14th. This company provides satellite
communications and ground systems
for government agencies and private
companies. The 130,000 square foot
space was designed by Gensler Baltimore
and the concept was to highlight the
dichotomy of earthly and stellar elements
as it relates to Integral’s business. This
concept was realized through material use
including terrazzo floor tile with sparkling
mirror accents, textured stone walls, sleek
glass conference room fronts, and lighting
concepts, such as lines of light and floating
orbs. This was a challenging project as
the design and documentation was done
in a twelve week period and is also in the
process of going for a LEED CI Silver

Baltimore City Center:
Corporate Forum - Tour of Sterling Partners

The Baltimore City Center toured the
new corporate headquarters of Sterling
Partners, located in Harbor East on March
19th. The nearly 16,000 square foot space
was charged with providing fluid exterior
views which was accomplished by PLDA
Interiors with the design of a frameless
butt seamed glass partition system that
defines all perimeter offices and conference
rooms. This was a full scope interiors

project including programming, space
planning, construction documents/details,
construction administration and furniture/
finish specifications.

Elementary/Middle School has been chosen
as the adopted school for renovations.
Fun was had by all as the featured acts
and solo artists competed in song on
stage. Karaoke favorites such as “ Love
Shack” and “Dancing in the Streets” were
all present. The house closed up with
a wonderful harmonica led sing along
version of “Piano Man.”
April 2nd, Facebook and emails flew about
the hilarity of the night. Rumor has been
told that this event is known as the 1st
annual Karaoke 4 a Cause. Put it on you
calendar for April Fools Day 2010!

Design Awards and each year the event grows in
participants and competition entries. Design
Award entries are judged by prominent members
of an IIDA chapter in another region, to insure
an impartial jury. This year’s jury was from the
Northern California Chapter and jurors met in
San Francisco to review the entries. Jurors review
project photos, plans and concept statements then
select the award recipients. The panel of jurors
included Debby Weber, IIDA, Eric Engstrom,
FIIDA, Severine Secret, IIDA, Carol Disrud, IIDA
and Robert Hayes, IIDA, AIA.
Twenty-five awards were given to thirteen firms.
The Pinnacle Award, the Design Awards’ most
prestigious award, went to Gensler for Cassidy
& Pinkard Colliers at 2101 L Street, NW in
Washington, DC. This project is in the Commercial
20,000 to 100,000 square feet category and
the lead designers were Jim Williamson, IIDA,
Mariella Buendia-Corrochano, Steve Martin
Robert Sollinger, Hansoo Kim, Maria Rucks,
Carey Ryder, Andrea Cleveland and Sharyea
Mehan. This project also won in the Gold Award
category. Three levels of awards, Bronze, Silver
and Gold, are recognized in nine categories. The
categories include: Commercial under 20,000
square feet; Commercial between 20,000 and
100,000 square feet; Commercial over 100,000
square feet; Educational/Institutional; Health
Care; Hospitality; Residential; Local/State/Federal
Government; and Retail.
This year’s awards ceremony named ten Gold Award
winners, five Silver Award winners and five Bronze
Award winners. Projects were also considered for
Special Merit. The three Merit winners happened to
be from the Commercial Under 20,000 square feet.
Two of those projects also won in the Gold level.
Special recognition was given to another Gold level
winner in the Educational/Institutional category.

to begin thinking about projects to enter into the
competition. The 15th Annual Design Awards will

A
s this issue of The Bridge comes out you have either just
returned from NeoCon in Chicago or are lamenting that
you did not have the opportunity to attend this year. If you did
not attend, I have an economical alternative for you, NeoCon
East, October 28-29, 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Coming from the government, I have attended this show for
years, and it gets bigger and better each year. True, this show
does tend to emphasize products that the government tends
to buy, and GSA is a major supporter. This however, is an
advantage this year because the government is spending a lot
of money, while the private sector market is down.
Consider the following reasons for attending
• NeoCon East is the largest of the regional Merchandise
Mart shows.
• 73,000 SF houses 290 Exhibitors and 49 seminars, and you
don’t have to cope with the Merchandise Mart elevators.
• 7,864 Attended the show and 3,928 persons attended the 49
seminars in 2008. Many of the seminars are free.
• The second day is traditionally student day. 965 students
from the Mid-Atlantic Region attended last year. See the
attached graphic.
• The opening night party is always great fun, and is a great
place to network. The party provides an enjoyable evening
if you plan to spend the night in Baltimore.
• The show is a short driving distance from most cities of
the Mid-Atlantic Region. Washington, DC – 40 miles.
Annapolis, MD – 32 miles. Wilmington, DE – 75 miles.
Philadelphia, PA – 106 miles. Richmond, VA - 152 miles.
Norfolk, VA – 240 miles.
• IIDA HQ and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter share a booth at
the show just inside the Pratt Street entrance to the exhibit
floor. We man the booth with HQ, and it is a great place to
stop by to sit, network, and check in with friends.

The 39,000
square-foot-space facility
maintains the standards
of environmental sustainability and according to Tim
Lovett, AIA, of Bowie Gridley Architects, is in the process
of being certified as a LEED-NC Gold Building by the
USGBC. The certification will likely happen by the end
of this year. What was most interesting about this tour was
that it was hosted by the Students and Faculty who use
the space which gave a great perspective of what is really
important to the people who actually use the space.

Have you a partner, family, and /or pets?
I am married and we have a cat, Mika, and three hermit crabs.
Where did you study design? What was the emphasis of your study? (Architecture, interior design, other)?
I received my MFA in Interior Design from the George Washington University. I passed the NCIDQ exam in Fall 2008 and I passed the LEED-CI
Exam in 2007.
What did you enjoy or excel at in school?
Concept development, model building and digital rendering.
What is your employer’s name and your job description or title?
I work for VOA Associates as a project designer. What I do from day-to day depends on the project phase. I’m currently managing the LEED documentation for two projects that are starting the Construction Administration phase.
What do you like most about your current job?
That I learn a new skill on every project and that I’m pushed to think about design in new ways.
How and why did you come to interior design as a career choice?
Design is my 2nd career. During my undergraduate years, I was a political science/international relations and Spanish major. I was drawn to design
because of its political dimensions. The built environment can influence and affect how people think, interact and feel.
What was your first job in design?
My school internship at Hickok Cole Architects turned into my first job. I was fortunate to have a great first job.
Why and when did you join IIDA?
I joined both IIDA and ASID while I was a student. I’ve maintained both memberships in my professional career. Both memberships bring excellent
opportunities for professional development.
Who or what has been your biggest motivator in your life or career?
Curiosity and a desire for knowledge.
What do you do or where do you go when you need to “escape”?
I go to an art museum; they are sacred places to me.
With what interests, hobbies, charities, or other organizations are you involved?
Every month, my husband and I volunteer at a soup kitchen called Open Table by cooking and serving meals. We’re both devoted to Greenpeace,
Environment America and the Washington Humane Society. As far as hobbies, I take dance classes, do yoga, swim, collect records (mostly soul,
Brazilian jazz, 80’s Britpop), and just picked up golf as my most newest sport. I don’t like to sleep much.
What is you favorite comfort food?
Sushi
What else do you want to say in THE BRIDGE – briefly?
As the WMCC Forum Coordinator, I’m looking forward to helping bring intriguing design programs and events to the members. In addition, I hope
that we can tap into the creative energy and talents of our student members. I’m always looking for new ideas.
If you could be another designer living or past who might that be?
I admire the work of Matali Crassat, Masamichi Katayama, George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, Yves Behar and John Maeda. I’m enjoying the process of becoming the designer that I want to be.
