PARENTING
Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurturing Heart Approach
This two-night workshop will help you gather insight into the mind of a difficult child. The approach was
inspired through the treatment of children who have been labeled as challenging, difficult, or intense,
especially those who have been diagnosed on the spectrum of ADHD, ODD, autism, PTSD, reactive
attachment disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome, developmental disabilities, and more. Discover strategies on
how to break patterns of negative responses, regardless of the child’s age and level of severity. Depending
upon a pending grant application, lower fees for all and a sliding scale fee & scholarships may be available to
low-income families. Call for details.
Tuesdays, July 21 & 28, 6 - 8 pm
$35/parent; $40/childcare provider
Support Group for Parents of Children with
Challenging Behaviors
Parents of children with ADHD, ODD, autism,
PTSD, reactive attachment disorder, fetal alcohol
syndrome, developmental disabilities, anger
issues, etc. are invited to attend this free group.
This ongoing group will provide an opportunity
for parents of “difficult” children to share their
experiences coping with life raising children with
challenging behaviors. The group will provide
the opportunity for parents to come together to
gain knowledge, education, and support, while
developing new skills to deal with their child’s
behaviors. A light meal will be served at each
meeting.
2nd Wednesday monthly, July 8, August 12,
September 9, October 14, November 11, December 9

The Explosive Child
What’s an explosive child? A child who responds to
routine problems with extreme frustration-crying,
screaming, swearing, kicking, hitting, biting, spitting,
destroying property, and worse. A child whose
frequent, severe outbursts leave his or her parents
feeling frustrated, scared, worried, and desperate for
help. Most of these parents have tried everythingreasoning, explaining, punishing, sticker charts,
therapy, medication-but to no avail. They can’t figure
out why their child acts the way he or she does; they
wonder why the strategies that work for other kids
don’t work for theirs; and they don’t know what to
do instead. Based on research by Dr. Ross Greene, a
distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of
kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges,
this class will help parents understand that explosive
kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains
of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and
problem solving, and they require a different approach
to parenting. Dr. Greene’s Collaborative Problem
Solving model promotes working with explosive
children to solve the problems that trigger explosive
episodes and teaching these kids the skills they lack.
This class will provide a new conceptual framework
for understanding their difficulties, based on research
in the neurosciences. Depending upon a pending grant
application, lower fees for all and a sliding scale fee &
scholarships may be available to low-income families.
Call for details.
Mondays, October 19 & 25
6 - 8 pm

Parenting: Coping with Stress and Anger
Being a parent can be difficult and frustrating.
Children are active and growing in so many ways!
Tantrums, crying, power struggles, sibling rivalry,
and other unwanted behaviors can affect family life
and peace of mind. Adults also experience stress,
anxiety, and sadness due to life events outside the
home. Learn how to identify potential triggers to
anger and stress and discover new ways to diffuse
situations before they reach a breaking point.
Through discussion, sharing and self-examination,
participants will learn how to make positive changes
that will also help their child learn to successfully
cope with their own stress, sadness and anxiety.

The Stranger you Know: A Child Sexual Abuse
Prevention Training
The Stranger You Know program gives participants
precise and up to date information on how child
molesters successfully offend against children.
Knowing how they think, act and operate is the
best protection we have against sexual offenders.
During the presentations, the program’s facilitators
will share with attendees:
• Warning signs that may indicate adult sexual misbehavior
• Ways offenders manipulate to get access to children
• What you can do to help prevent child sexual abuse
Preventing child sexual abuse takes more than telling
our children “don’t talk to strangers.” It’s our job to
know how to protect them from sexual abuse.

Lung Cancer Screening
Smoking: No Longer A Smoke Screen
Anything that increases your chances of developing disease is called a risk factor.
Individuals who may be at a higher risk of developing lung cancer should meet the
following risk factor criteria:
If you are between the ages of 55 and 74 years;
and
have a cigarette smoking history of at least 30 pack years;
and
are a current cigarette smoker or at least a former smoker who quit within the last 15 years.
Please fill in the following numbers:
Packs smoked per day
Years smoked
To translate your smoking history into 'pack years,' simply multiply the number of cigarette packs you have
smoked per day by the number of years you have smoked. Your total will be calculated for you.
Individuals who may be at a higher risk of developing lung cancer might consider radiological screening.
If any of this information pertains to your smoking history, please contact our
Nurse Navigator at 860.585.3400 for future follow up options and screenings.

Breast Health Risk Assessment and
Management Program
As women, we are all at risk for breast cancer,
but not all women have the same risk. Some
women, based on their personal and family
medical histories, lifestyle and exposures,
are considered to be at higher risk for breast
cancer. Men are also at risk for breast cancer.
To understand your risk for breast cancer
and to learn ways you can reduce your risk,
the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and
Management Program at Beekley Center
for Breast Health and Wellness provides
breast cancer risk assessments, screenings
and diagnostic exams, genetic screening,
surveillance and education for women and
men who are concerned about their individual
risk for breast cancer.
For more information or to schedule an
appointment, please call our Breast Health
Navigator at 860.585.3659.
